- I know I may just be a Johto fanboy, but I seriously believe the Johto region is significantly under represented in the Pokemon anime, leading to loads of missed storyline opportunities. Today, I'm going over that lost potential with all of you!

The thing with Silver is the fact that Paul took all the character traits from him. Treating pokemon like tools? Silver. Releasing weak pokemon? Silver insinuate that and his counterpart in Golden boys directly released his stater that the main boy took with him. The only thing that more or less set them apart is that Paul doesn't assaults Ash physically like Silver in the game, their backstory, and Paul didn't admit to love his pokemon, but the chance of the way he starter to treat them is obvious.
Plus, Pokémon doesn't seem to like unkind rivals a lot now so, I don't know if someone like Silver would fit. If they want to it, they should make him a movie in the solo Ash series and defeat the executives to retreat the Celebi that game from the gs ball. and at the end of the day make Silver remember Gold/Jimmy through Ash. But I don't see that happening because, at the end of the day those are there to promote the new games, and are more comfortable with new cast in all of those.
Yep. Paul was basically all that Silver was minus the Rocket connection.
True. I think they may have done that on purpose since the DP anime was airing while the HGSS games came out.
We def missed on Koga being a coronation battle, now rematching Ash as an E4 member and even introduce Janine as the new Fushcia City gym leader, people think Paul is now Viridian’s so it would highlight how Kanto’s gyms have changed since Ash left his OG journey.
Johto as a region is probably the coolest in the series, so it’s unfortunate we didn’t get more exposure to it in the anime.
Not to mention trademark wise, it is lumped together with Kanto and Orange Island as one big anime series, unlike Advanced Generation (Gen 3), Diamond and Pearl (Gen 4) and Best Wishes (Gen 5). Probably because they didn't expect Pokemon to last after Gen 2.
That couldn't be further from the truth. It's easily the worst region after Galar in the games, and the anime did it no favors
The main reasons why they never brought Silver into the anime are because Gary was Ash’s rival again in Johto, while Paul basically had the same personality and arc he did.
Plus, the anime didn't really start to follow the plots of the games until Hoenn with the Team Aqua/Magma arc
Imagine if Brendan actually showed up in the anime during the Team Magma/Aqua showdown to help Ash, instead if Lance. Only gets a cameo at the start of a movie, which is also apart from the anime in some way.
Ash vs Silver would’ve been interesting

Silver's kind of similar to Paul in a way though, at least in terms of training methods.

Gary was the rival for Ash in Kanto and Johto. Like how the main series game Lance was the champion in Kanto but then blue defeated him and is the champion in Johto. The anime thought we could copy the same thing about the main series game for the champion so rival throughout the region from Kanto to Johto. If silver was introduced as Ash's Rival then this would have been a heated battle.
As if Ash and Gary's battle wasn't exactly that.
To be fair most of the events in Johto takes place four years after the events in Kanto (in the games) so when ash went to Johto most of the events in Kanto were still recent I believe when ash was in Johto it was 4 years prior to what events would occur in the GS games
If Giovanni have introduced the other team rocket members like Archer,proton & Ariana along with Cassidy,Butch Jessie and James, then the team rocket would be incredible.

Johto is my favorite region out of all of the regions….it’s so unfortunate that we didn’t get much out of that region. I’ve been upset about this fit years..

Technically Paul is the anime version of Silver minus the backstory to Giovanni and Team Rocket. Instead he has different backstory to make more original for the anime.

@@clement3278 I know, Paul and Silver are mirrors of each for the most part with how their stories goes with Paul's disappointment in his older brother and Silver in his father.
Can I say something? I've always thought that the Johto series took the best parts of the first two series and just made it mediocre. Not that it was bad, but I barely remember a lot of its best episodes while sagas that are worse in production have better episodes.
We could have Jessie and James work with Archer and Ariana while spying on Silver. Silver could have encountered Ash and had him either as a travel partner or rival. I agree that the GS ball could have been reintroduced for Goh. Also, the lack of Lance and Ash interaction or the return of Clair to help train Ash against Leon and Cynthia.
Archer and Ariana didn’t technically exist until gen 4
Not only that, if Silver is introduce in the anime, it would fleshed out Giovanni's character more.

True, but we could have gotten a bit more with them. Especially when it came to Ho-Oh and Lugia (though, mostly Ho-Oh since it's easily the most overlooked 'Mon of Gen 2 and is constantly under the shadow of Lugia).
It’s such a shame Johto is underrepresented in the anime as that region is rich with memorable set pieces in the games. Especially since they never bothered to conclude the GS Ball subplot. And it’s one of my favorite regions too…..
Honestly I’ve never really thought about the topic in this video but I have to agree. I didn’t come into Pokémon till around generation 4 but I’ve always thought that out of each region, the johto region was left out in different ways that makes it not as memorable as other regions

my conjecture is at that time Takeshi Shudo still thought he would write his ending with old Ash and the meaning of existence so that's why he didn't add Silver or the Rocket executives. Though one could argue he could have written the same ending with Silver and Ash, asking themselves "what do we do now?" after TR's fall
It's hard to take the anime seriously when it comes to anything serialization-wise. Also for brining back Alain only for him to get dunked on by Leon without an Ash rematch was a huge mistake. As for better Johto representation, really gotta look towards the Pokemon Adventures Manga instead.
Today Diantha being sweeped by Leon easily, 😒 moreover the rest battle was offscreen but on the bright side we got to see young Chynthia in the past, she was adorable the Sinnoh queen will retire from pokemon battle.😊
They screwed up with Casey. Maybe she could’ve been a new travelling companion like May and Dawn were later on. They also screwed up with Ash’s Pokémon, the GS Ball, the potential rivals in Jackson and Jimmy, as well as Silver and Team Rocket. They had so much dumb filler throughout the series, as well as so little development for his Johto team.
To this day the lack of a proper ending for the GS Ball is something that made me loathe the anime outright. Since then I've only seen select parts of the Alola arc, which was infuriating for a whole other reason (namely, because the Ultra-X games were outright scam considering how little it changed the original storyline). And seeing both how Power Creep is still very much a thing since Gen 6 and how they did mah boi Giratina in with the updated Diamond & Pearl remake not even including a Platinum Episode - I am _very close_ to just outright leave Scarlet and Violet die in a ditch.
Legends: Arceus was a step in the right direction - to recover a bit of the wonders and mystery of discovering things for the first time, even when the gameplay loop grew a bit stale towards the end and the game outright forgot what anti-aliasing is when I set foot on water. I'd really like to see more of this and less of the "beat 8 Gyms" kind of games. OR at least, give me a narrative and a storyline that could be enjoyed both by actual 10 years old and older fans. I'm not asking for the freaking Silmarillion in terms of complexity, but having a bit more depth in each town would go a long way, rather than having just 'the snowy town', 'the green town', 'the Big City', etc.
Considering the fact that Game Freak figured that Johto would have been the last of the pokemon franchise (before it clearly wasn't) I figure they didn't want to introduce anything significant enough in that region that would leave unanswered questions. This is why they kept the lore and narrative in the games separate from the anime. It would have felt like a cheat to introduce these characters and then wrap them up so quickly if the anime, and the games, were supposed to end as they should. It's a shame the region has been done dirty like this, but it's likely the heads were still in the clouds as to if they would continue or not at that point in time.
What would be cool, is if Silver had already gone through his own character arc, rival battles with Jimmy, competed in the Silver Conference a year prior to Ash competing in it, and won it through his character growth. Making a few appearances when Ash travels through Johto, as the previous winner of the Johto League. Silver being reminded of Jimmy through Ash's actions, and Silver having the JN Paul vibe to him, but showing his intentions of stopping Team Rocket setting up in Johto. Mainly, the Executives. Could prove interesting, and him partnering with Karen to fight them, because she's bored and would find it entertaining to derail Team Rocket from succeeding.
The big problem is that the Johto anime was just the Kanto series pt 2. So unlike the other regions where Ash started fresh and more of the story came through, Johto got a lot of carry over from Kanto, even more than the games.
Unfortunately, there was no way for Silver to be put in since aside from Kanto, the other game rivals or male protagonists are never shown in anime main story

Goh catching legendaries leading up to mew is sorta kinda happening I just wish it was more so the fairy legends like celebi, manaphy, and jirachi, and only then would goh find mew and have even a slight chance of battling and catching him
Idk. I feel like Galar has the least representation. I feel like Jotho's biggest problem was more wasted potential. But with Galar we don't even get the see all the gym leaders. And since Ash travels all the regions in Journeys the Galar region doesn't get the development it needs.
Just like How Gary Told Ash that a mecha pokemon wiped his pokemon team in one episode leading to the Mewteo Strikes Back movie, that GS Ball could have led into a movie in the Johto Saga.

Modestly I prefer they didn't give so much space to the rocket commander or in general other team rocket arc because I always find them boring when the main rocket trio are perfect but i agree that silver needed the spotlight

Character Rival Silver has an anime counterpart named Paul, because near at the end of pokemon journeys he's the recent Viridian City Gym leader.
I ask this about all things Johto why isn't it better. Without Kanto in the same game it would've been horrible.

There's an another evil team icon that silver sorta wears only in the normal gen 2 games. That icon is mostly a cipher icon.
Giovani is actually a terrific character in the manga. He often got the better of his opponents, and even took on something on a mentor role to Red and Yellow at a couple of points. He even had Lance at his mercy.
Zephyros Union had changed gen 3 and gen 6 but, mostly destroyed future remakes of gen 4 of Pasio and onward. They also destroyed the gen 9 anime of Chloe in it. By the use of gen 9, at the end of the day the Zephyros Union did set a dangerous presence of the future of the series anyway.

You're absolutely correct because I was too poor to afford the games I only had to anime and I literally did not know that Johto Kanto were two different regions until my friend gifted me with the Pearl and I played on his DS. I honestly thought Kanto and Johto together were both just called Johto and I thought Ash was always from Johto and would get kind of shook when people would say Kanto cuz I had no idea what that was.
Zephyros Union in the Orange Islands or the Alola Region could had impacted the damage to the Alola Region, Space, and Ultra Space causing a dark time rift. This begins of a calamity of the damage to the player characters, the league, Aether Foundation, take over the observatory, megapolis, and the ultra recon squad. The Zephyros Union will kill every one that stands in their way. Don't let deceives fool you the boss will have 3 box art legendaries and 4 Tapu's in his team. This attempt were to happen only in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.
I remember the GS Ball and that it was suppose to be important in Johto but it wasn't really used and Celebi the Pokemon that has connection to the ball, was used in a Pokemon Movie.

Well johto never had a villain team, but not it might be a chance to get that new evil team who terrorize to kill people. They might replace team rocket.
I think what happened with Johto is that this was the first time the anime had moved to a new region, so I don't think they knew exactly what they were going to do. Notice this is the only region where Ash didn't leave all - or most - of his Pokemon behind at Oak's lab before starting his journey, and the producers, as a result, had to write off several of his team to make room for the Johto Pokemon. Likewise, it's the only new region that wasn't in a new series. Nowadays, when a new region starts, it's a new series, but Johto is still in the Original Series. If Johto happened today, you'd probably actually see much of what you mentioned in the anime.

Retroactive pitch for Johto Journeys. Ash catches Totodile before he even gets to New Bark Town. When they arrive, Totodile is chilling outside his pokéball. They arrive to Professor Elms lab just after it had been robbed. The police accuse Ash of being the thief because it’s a Totodile that was stolen, until his friends vouch that he caught his like a day ago and Gold/Jimmy/Ethan comes in claiming to have fought a shady look trainer with a Totodile just before arriving. Silver then proceeds to become a reoccurring rival and revealing he needed the pokémon for his mission to stop Team Rocket and being forgiven for his theft. Sense Paul is kind of based off of Silver, maybe he returns during Sinnoh shortly before the league to give Paul shit about his training methods because of character development, with them battling and Silver winning. Paul would say something along the lines of “your just lucky you have strong pokémon” still needing to be defeated by a pokémon he deemed weak before understanding he’s wrong.
I agree that Johto has lost potential in the anime I liked to see the Rocket Admins have appeared in the Johto anime in place of those Anime Members besides the main trio who most fan will probably not remembers and Silver to appear but Paul seams to have Silver’s story arc without any relation to Giovanni and Giovanni has had not done anything besides in the shadows and their was that lost connection with Nanu they never further Explored and I like to see Jimmy and Marina had have appeared in the main series like Vincent/ Jackson does and I like for one of the new elite four members to have appeared Will or Karen since they always had atleast one of the, Appear I’m the series Lance doesn’t count as he is the champion of Johto and that Janine was never appeared even mentioned by Anya when she returned or Koga getting promoted to Elite four and their is some missed potential for Johto in Journeys like not Having Eunice appear in the suicune episode he could’ve have a rivalry with Goh in who could catch Suicune and not having Sakura and the Kimono sisters to return to help Chloe but Johto is the second most underused region the most lost Potential goes to Galar in the entire of it’s generation.
I'd like to think they were holding out for the Johto storylines in the anime until we get Legends Johto

Yeah in the anime Johto has always been treated like it's just west-Kanto. I think it fair to assume that the concpects of strong regional identity for the series and the anime probably didn't take place until like half way though the Johto series production.
There been other characters in other regions we haven't heard about and the Zephyros Union is part of that.

Silver wasn't even confirmed to be Giovanni's son until Generation IV. So it couldn't have happened in the Johto anime.
With how traditional and historical is, I think Johto coulda got way more love. Even in its own series back in the day had they created less filler they coulda dedicated more episodes to Silver, Team Rocket, each city and made a lot of plot points better.
Honestly i just think the games writers have a lot more leeway than the ones doing the animes.
Case in point : the plot in Pokemon Black and White being much more mature than anything the anime as ever done, so chances are they sidelined most of Team Rocket (except the comic relief trio ofc) to keep the animes tone more kid friendly. In Silver's case, i really think he just got replaced by Paul, who's fairly similar in terms of motivations and methods, just toned down a notch and without the dark backstory for similar reasons they're staying away from Team Rocket.
I'd probably watch the anime again if they did a spin-off similar to Pokemon Origins using the Gen 2 games as a base (Gold and his Typhlosion as the protagonist and Silver and his Feraligatr as the rival/antagonist alongside Team Rocket), as i absolutely love Johto as well.

But Team Rocket Executives in Gold/Silver/Crystal hasn't got names and individual sprites, there all are refered as "Rocket Executive". Names and unique look they got in Heart Gold and Soul Silver, so Johto anime cannot include Petrel, Proton, Ariana and Archer like we know them today. Also, Silver being Giovanni's son aren't a thing in original GSC games, only introduced in remakes...
I know, Journeys could include this, but Journeys' formula allowed this series to include a lot of characters, places and plot... It's material for something more than one Pokemon anime season and I think there are a more important things for Journeys than Team Rocket Executives and Giovanni's son, like... Galar stuff - a lot of gym leaders, Bede, Galar's town, even there are missing Galar pokemon. And Ash reunion with a lot of his past travel companion, so why we don't meet again Misty or Cilan? (Brock return in Arceus' special, so don't say anything like: "Misty comeback in Alola") May's japanesse voice actress has a spasmodic dysphonia, so I won't be mad if she never back, maybe little upset.
The GS Ball should have been a bigger part. Scrapping it for no reason was a foolish move. The ball could have had Raikou in it if they were so against Celebi.

I give Johto some love when I think about how am I would change the anime if I could. I make Silver the replacement from Giovanni as vermilion cities gym leader, I have Ariana turn over a new leaf as a dark type leader. And since Lance seems to be treated as the champion of both regions I make Karen the Jhoto champion.

Journeys should of had a couple of the male protagonist from the games be in the master 8 since none of them have been in the anime.
I'm pretty sure the Team Rocket admins came after the fact, I don't think they ever existed in the original gold and silver games. Also I didn't ask for any of this. I would rather have Jimmy have his own story.
My theory is that Ash is Giovanni's son. So silver is Ash, Ash is silver.
I honestly got sick and tired of seeing Team Rocket in the anime. It got to the point where whenever Jesse and James showed up with whatever ridiculous scheme they had, I just skipped over it.
Also, how can Ash and his friends not recognize those bumbling buffoons when they're in disguise? Any decent and intelligent person could take one look at them and say "Oh, look it's Team Rocket." I swear it's worse than people in the comic book world who can't figure out that Clark Kent is Superman.

To be honest, I’m gonna guess why most of the Johto region’s game based plot.
Basically, Silver is an abandoned child of Giovanni. I know that it is a sensitive subject and his plan of him taking down Team Rocket while mistreating his Pokémon! Is definitely gonna bring some red flags to the series and Silver might be the center of controversy in the anime as in The TV station might ban the particular episodes Silver will be part of. (Also to add on, If we get a glimpse of Silver mistreating his Pokémon, plus Ash and the gang saw it happen on numerous occasions, that is gonna be the most banned episodes in the entire series.)
Basically, They went the safe route when adapting the Johto Region….basically making it more boring. The GS Ball is probably a key to that but….”Let’s not reuse this old gimmick any further” is probably what the Producers said.
On the 4Kids English Dub side of things, They’re gonna have a field day trying to censor it! Especially because American audiences are more sensitive to these sort of…heavy topics in what is viewed as a Kid’s show.
Black and White had a bigger potential, with the games already having good story telling
Johto was when I lost interest in keeping watching the show. The journey dragged out so badly it seems it took an eternity to go on a Gym Leader to another. It seems the gap between Ash going from Goldenrod to Ecruteak was bigger than when he earned the first six bagdes in Kanto, for example. How can someone keep following it without snoozing?
Even if the reason for this unbearable extension was because Hoenn scope wasn't done yet, they could have still finished the journey for Johto's badges much earlier, exploring properly some mini-arcs as it was suggested by MysticUmbreon and, after Johto's Conference, creating a new Kanto arc in which Ash must stop a huge Team Rocket evil scheme that may envolve some Legendaries. It was a lost chance to build up the Rocket admins while the anime kept relatively faithful to the games (the return to Kanto).

Silver is not canon in the anime because Ash IS Giovanni's Son in this show hence why Delia keeps lying to Ash about him and Giovanni only cares for an Heir to his organization hence why the Rocket Trio have been watching over Ash every Region. Giovanni does not want a fooking Pikachu he can find right behind his Gym in Viridian Forest lol...the guy made Mewtwo. They kept it a secret but an easter egg of The Trio still pursuing Ash and us never meeting his Dad confirms it. Well done Anime Company...I always knew they were keeping Ash and him Separate for all of The Indigo League but Giovanni will not drop the bombshell ever for he is playing games and testing Ash's resolve to see if he is fitting to take over Team Rocket. Silver later became Paul. They are literally the EXACT same character almost haha and the Silver that Ritchie met is Ash's Grandfather probably Delia's Father who is also out on his Pokemon journey. Professor Oak...is a dirty old man and probably sleeps with every teenage girl in Pallet Town rofl.
Such a underwhelming region in the anime. Even Unova was a bit more memorable for better or worse.

The Kanto Pokemon took some spotlight away
He didn't catch Quagsire or Houndoom episodes
Should've caught the Red Gyrados instead of Lance
Had a chance to catch a Shiny Shuckle but didn't
Should've caught Larvitar srsly "Oak & Elm"
Should've caught Latias
Should've got/ caught an EV to evolve into Espeon Miroring Gary's Umbreon
