This league was the shining moment of ash's kanto starters:Squirtle took out two of macy's pokemon.Bulbasaur defeated magneton and tied against a fully evolved starter meganium. Finally Charizard wiped out half of Gary's team.
Pikachu defeats Furret that Misty thought was a ground type
Johto League: An apology for the Kanto League.
Hahah

Because in the Kanto league, Gary lost before he could even face Ash???
@@joshualowe959 it was realistic
@@pn2294 Except for the horrible type handling💀
In the second generation hyper beam was a physical attack so it makes sense that houndom used counter
Yeah up until Diamond and Pearl the physical/special stuff was a freaking mess XD
Thank you I thought I was the only one who noticed
But doesn't Counter let you take the damage before sending it back ?
@@Bravidunno yes but in the anime it works without taking damage just look at Jessie wobafut

@@ashgrenenja8142 technically greninja was doing neutral damage since charizard x is fire/dragon but okay
Technically ... Hyber Beam is a Physical move in Gen 2. So it can be countered
*Hyber*
the physical special split
But the gen 3 and 4 was also counted
lugyisonyoutube hyper beam is special in generation 4
@@skyn3945 We're in generation 2.
This was the best league tournament-wise. I loved how there was a point-system with groups. That was really unique. Hope the Alola league will implement something similar, instead of the standard 3v3 elimination rounds until the Full Battles.
Yes! I really love the format of this league!
The more 6 v 6 matches and main characters in at least one of those full battles the better
And now that the Alola League is here, we aren’t even sure if we’ll get ANY full battles
@@jmac28211 At least after 22 years Ash won a league!!!
Well sadly the only full battle is Ash Vs Kakui. But to be fair I'm pretty sure not alot of people have a full team of 6 since anyone can enter the league and it's the first Alola League so I expected things to go differently. I'm glad they made Ash win this league, matching the games. When you think about it, Ash winning was sort of foreshadowed from the beginning
Snorlax: you steal my dream I steal your win
C'mon Zac, you forgot the most important fact! Ash's victory over Macy was even more impressive, considering how Ash's Water-type Pokémon were weak against Macy's Fire-types... well, at least according to Brock. ;D
Lol 😂
So tru
"Both of Ash pokemon is water-type and they're totally weak againts Fire type"
Man's no hot
@SilverCenturion wdym ash lost because alain cheated by using some boost with mega evolution
I love this Gary. He’s not the same cocky know-it-all but instead he actually helps others
10:13 the only reason it worked was because in gens 1-3 all normal type moves(including hyper beam) were physical attacking moves which is why counter worked because it’s always been a physical attacking move. But gen 4 and onwards thanks to the physical special split, hyper beam is a special attacking move so counter will no longer work against that.
Yeah in gens 1-3 the physical/special stuff was decided by the typing of the move. I guess that sounded good on paper until you realized that the elemental PUNCHES were all SPECIAL. lmao
Andries Velten I thought the reason he was annoyed was because in the games Counter doesn’t negate the damage the user receives but in the anime that was an established precedent already with Wobbuffet so I’m not mad at it
@@vaporterra Wobbuffet was able to reflect Vine Whip using Counter before. Since Vine Whip is a Grass-type move, that meant it was special instead of physical in Generation II. In other words, Counter shouldn't have worked against it. The Pokemon anime is nothing if not inconsistent.
Alpha-sama and BITE was SPECIAL.
Alpha-sama me punches an alakazam with ice in g2:Alakazam, eh it's nothing
Me punches alakazam now:ONE PUNCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Tbh, Ash's loss in this league was the only one that made sense both from a writing perspective and an in-universe one, which is why it doesn't sour the air like some of the others do.
I don't know, I didn't have a problem with his Hoen loss. I do agree that the loss here was handled rather well. Kind of wish we got to see more of Harrison.
Made more sense in indigo though. Ash being a beginner noob that time and someone who cheated his badges didn't really deserve to win. And yet some people say the God awful unova league is better where ash's loss is just absolute BS
@@jedidude6358 Dont forget, in indigo Team Rocket kept on kidnapping him and almost got him disqualified all together. Noob or not, his loss against Ritchie could've been handled better.
@@darkknight5541
Still shocked that his Pikachu lost to Tyson’s Meowth. That’s sad man 🙍♂️.

That does not surprise me that *Ash was supposed* to win the Johto League (along with the Kalos League).
I loved how this conference was more advanced like having a preliminary round and a round robin part. Way better than every other tournament in this series which were all just simple single elimination matches.
That moment when your fully-evolved Grass starter is only strong enough to tie with the other guy’s unevolved Grass starter...
(JK, Bulbasaur’s amazing)
Didn't the same thing happened in unova?
fares 17449 Good point
Bulbasaur sucks ass
And now we can add Rowlet to this.
ANIME LOGIC
This is why Bulbasaur is in the top tier of Ash's Pokemon. He beat a fully evolved (at the time) Electric and Steel type and went toe to toe with a fully evolved Meganium.
Also why did Charizard lose to a Fighting type when he was a flying type???
Because they basically only used fire type moves, and I'm not sure that Charizard knew any flying type moves at the time.
It was probably just to hype up gen 3
Cause type avantage isn't everything you also depend on level
@@rashuneknight3939 charizard was at a pretty darn high level at that time.
Ash's Charizard didn't know any Flying-type moves at the time and Harrison's Blaziken didn't know any Fighting Type moves, so the Flying > Fighting match-up didn't really matter in this particular battle.
In the end, both were extremely close in power (Charizard battered Blaziken so badly that Harrison couldn't use it in the next round, which is probably why he lost after beating Ash), but Ash had never encountered a Blaziken before, so he wasn't sure what to expect when it came out. On the other hand, Harrison was well aware that Charizard was arguably Ash's most powerful Pokemon at the time, and a threat that he needed to be VERY careful with. I think that's what allowed Harrison to edge out a victory when all was said and done.
Bro, love the new animations!! And the Blaziken Vs Charizard battle is one of the most iconic league battles ever imo!! Loved it!! Charizard was seen as such an OP and undefeatable Pokémon and then it gets beaten by a new stronger fire type starter! Truly setting a great precedent for Hoenn!
The backstory was a representation of how Ash took his rivalry with Gary. They wanted to show how the two always fought for anything, and When the ball snapped in half, it meant it was a tie, but Gary took it as a loss. But ash didn’t consider it as a win, and kept that half for the day he could beat Gary correctly and properly, which happened now. So it’s wasn’t an unnecessary backstory. The opposite, it just helped us represent how serious they took their rivalry.
Can we all agree that seeing bulbasaur suplex megainium is one of the best moments in the league. 6:06 for context
Ensemble Darkhorse: Harrison: he's pretty much the only one of Ash's league-only rivals who actually *earned* his victory over Ash by virtue of being a Worthy Opponent, and thus is pretty much the only one of Ash's league-only rivals who is *near-unanimously* *liked* by the fandom, instead of being a Base-Breaking Character or The Scrappy. He also gets coolness points for being the first-known trainer to use a Blaziken.
10:12 the anime (for a change) was using Game Logic. in Gen 1 and 2, Hyper Beam was a physical attack (for some reason)
It's because Gen 2 was pre Physical-Special split meaning that all Normal type moves were automatically classed as Physical moves. This was changed in Gen 4 where all moves were classed individually as physical or special.
Pretty good analysis, man! I'm really looking forward to your next Pokemon League reviews!
2:31 misty: I figured that a ground type would be better than pikachu
Du it’s brown so it obviously means ground type
Is that an Aura Guardian reference?
@@connorj2355 yea in the anime mistakes vid😂
Hell yeah!Aura Guardian fan!
Yes it is
Aura Guardian ain’t nothin compared to Zac and Dobbs
I agree with what you said about Ash vs. Harrison having a bit too many one or two hit knockout matches, BUT go back and watch Gary vs. Ash...I feel it was WAY too rushed in a lot of places:
-Nidoqueen one shots Tauros with Hyper Beam; yes it did use Rock Smash on the field, but Tauros plowed right through it
-Heracross beat Magmar with a Fury Attack followed up with Megahorn; after somehow taking Flamethrower/Fire Blast to the face...
-Blastosie with one Hydro Pump beat Heracross; so the bug could SOMEHOW blow away flames with its wings but then get knocked out by a water move while shielded behind a rock?
-Blasotise used Bite on Bayleef's headleaf, spun it around and threw it across the field...for a knockout....
-Snorlax took out Arcanine with one move; Hyper Beam
-The classic Golem being knock out with dragon Rage LOL despite taking 0 damage at that point in the battle
-Sciozr with one Flamethrower from Charizard
Muk and Snorlax were the ONLY Pokemon that got beat after taking A LOT of damage from Scizor's speedy moves like Metal Claw, Swift and Quick Attack. Go back and watch Blastoise; the ONLY damage it took during the fight was from Seismic Tosss! Any other attacks it used Rapid Spin to deflect and I don't count Muk burying it with its sludge body as damage lol
Heracross' defeat wasn't that quick because like you said, it had already taken a Fire Blast so was probably weakened. That being said, Bayleef and Golem went down stupidly quick.
if you rewatch Heracross the writers made it seem like it took 0 damage despite being engulfed in flames llol it wasn't even looking damaged or burned after the fight with Magmar. @@evilduck1000
@@OurKindofEntertainment Just went back and watched the clip and see what you mean. However Heracross sounds like it's in a bit of pain when hit with the flamethrower. And even if it's still able to fight well after, I'd still assume it did something.
I never understood the one shot Dragon Rage on Golem
Koig bad writing....
I miss Ash’s Squirtle so much.

@Pharell Scott same
I like the back story. More weight to the rival dynamic.
I like how rivals out of nowhere went on a decline starting from unova league where we saw them before the the league
This was awesome, really worth waiting for the reupload. Looking forward to seeing the Sinnoh league review. Charizard did amazing, wish he beat Blazekin. Looking forward to the rest of the reviews, stay awesome Zac.
Insert headcanon that the Ash-Gary Poké Ball backstory happened _before_ episode 1, thereby letting it fit smoothly into canon.
Yeah I’m pretty sure it was said that happened before the journey
Anyone realize that the episode “Love, Pokémon Style” is just a copy of an earlier episode called “Love, Totodile Style”
Wait hold up, he caught a Sneael while it was fainted. THAT FRICKING BULLCRAP
Lumiose: when ash lighted the torch it was kinda cool
Sinnoh league review: he did’t light the torch he didn’t get a new rival instead we got ash’s old Pokemon returned
-Face palm-
Can't wait for sinnoh and kalos league review
Yeah true those are the best leagues for ash
@@oresti9271 sinnoh is the best. Kalos league was good but very rushed
@@rayquaza4924 Yeah
@@oresti9271 yea they were cool leagues but they made ash lose for no reason at all
@@Super_156 eh I can forgive the Kalos lose since Alain had to win because of the team flare plot stuff but I agree about the sinnoh one
4:01 except Anabel all other girls fall in love for same reason, even chikorita or probably Latias too.
But ash is a big nerd to realize that
10:17 You know if I was in that situation I would have simply switch Bayleef with Charizard the very moment Blaziken came out. The battle would go on like normal and even if Charizard lost Blaziken would have been exhausted, too exhausted to deal with Bayleef.
Hey, we gotta force Ash to lose somehow, right? The series ends if he ever wins a league and/or becomes a Pokemon Master, so he has to lose every championship just so we can keep milking the anime for profits like a lactating Miltank.
Also, did you forget about Blaziken's Blaze ability? If Blaziken was exhausted, Bayleef would stand even less of a chance against Blaziken because of its powered-up Fire-type moves. And don't tell me about how abilities didn't exist during Generation II, because Colour Change had been activated during the anime multiple times during the Johto arc. If Kecleon can use its ability, so can Blaziken.
@@ryangallagher9723 for the first reply Ash could have just lost the next round he didn't have to lose that battle.
@@ryangallagher9723 and second considering they said Blaziken was so weak that Harrison couldn't use him for the very next battle on the next day that tells me it was probably too weak to even take advantage of this ability. And if that ability did exist in generation 2 don't you think Charizard would have been able to use it too?
Edit: changed to 2 too.
@@zealiouszone8861 Good point.
glad to see you are re uploading the league riview
They gave away the result with the name of the episode.
"Johto Photo Finish" it definitely means that Ash will loose.
the thing about that rusty pokeball is that they fought over it BEFORE they started their journeys not on the first day, listen very carefully to the argument when they are fighting over it, gary says fate is smiling on him just as he is ABOUT TO START HIS JOURNEY
Johto was certainly an improvement over the mess that is the Kanto league, in terms of battling and plot:) While the Gary VS Ash battle was certainly impactful as it served to wrap up their rivalry, it wasn't as good as it could have been, with today's standards, but it's alright I suppose.
You need to rewatch it, its better than most of what Pokemon has to offer lately.
@@aesir1ases64 How so?
I remember I watched this as a kid in the early 2000’s. Since I watched the indigo league in 2000 and Pokémon the first movie in 2000. I watched the anime and movies until 2017. I was three in 2000
You should watch the newer anime and movies too they’re different but still good.

this is a good series man. keep the videos coming
The pokeball was a story BEFORE they began their journey, if I remember correctly it was the day before their journey started.
I remember when they dubbed "The Legend of Thunder" and they gave Jackson a totally different name...
The Legend of Thunder sucked in English, and not even because of the actual dub. There were SO MANY THINGS that they did wrong with this special here in the west (including giving Jackson a different name, notwithstanding the time between Master Quest and Chronicles).

Don’t forget how they gender-bent one of the Rocket agents because... something. (At least that gave Veronica Taylor a Rocket villain to voice, just like with Rachael Lillis and Eric Stuart.)
@@MisterMokuroh
And, what about that “Fabu-Lance” crap they kept throwing in?
My only real complaint about Ash vs Gary and Charizard in general is that Ash himself never trained it to become as strong as it is. I get that his wins with Charizard can more be attributed to his skill at commanding his Pokemon and coming up with strategies, but it does take away from the win when Ash basically got gifted a Charizard that's much stronger than the one he had before.
Luckily the anime learned from that with Infernape and Greninja by having Ash train them himself to reach their full potential.
Oh, and a bit of a plot hole during the Ash vs Harrison battle where Ash acts like he's never seen a Kecleon even though Johto had an episode all about that Pokemon. If I'm not mistaken it even had an entry in his Johto dex.
Man thank you for explaining what's wrong with zard I always thought the power he had was undeserved
Afonso Martins Not necessary undeserved but Ash felt a bit disconnected to most of Charizard’s development in Johto other than his gym battle with Clair.
Nilx Part of that is also that the original series focuses more on the main characters antics and character building moments outside of training but that shifted in advanced generation onwards because now you have two characters (Ash and May, Ash and Dawn) with huge ambitions.
Dude this league starts right with a new pokemon in the anime as well as blaziken it's just one of the best if not best starters ever. I love blaziken it was my first pokemon and is still my favorite it's just one of the strongest non legendary pokemon in general (looks at garchomp) but when it comes to starters when using speed boost it is competitively insane until greninja is a thing. It uses the priority move we all know and love water shuriken yay. It just destroys blaziken no matter what speed you have for some reason. If you are able to use earthquake on greninja it's fine but that doesn't matter if your strategy uses speed boost against a priority move. Blaziken has two fatal flaws it's general defense against anything that's effective on it and that insane priority but using both is just a fun combo to play against. Great video man it's a great review of a show we all loved also sorry for ranting I've been going against greninja left and right so it's been tough but that's pretty much the main weakness of my team except for flying pokemon but that I can counter most of the time.
Just finished watching the entire original series yesterday when I binge watched this league arc and the final 3 episodes. Truly this league was 1000% better than anything Kanto had to offer, from the animation to the battle tactics. Now onto the Advanced series!
Osm bro love from india
Big fan bro 😊
This comment is so underrated
Back then all normal moves were considered physical so counter would still work on it nowadays id agree but since this was before the physical special split it technically counts
Back then I was amazed how Ash decided to use his big and massive pkm againts Gary instead of his tiny and unevolved ones.
Dude, you're very underrated. I hope you'll receive more recognition someday.
What really interested me about this League was the group stage format. Often it's used with 4 teams per group in a contest of 32 teams in total, and the best teams from each group go forward to the Round of 16. I wish they would flesh out this idea with something like knockout differential (The equivalent of goal differential in real life) by comparing Pokemon knocked out vs Pokemon lost as a tie-breaker
The reason why Hyper Beam was Countered was because in Gens 1-3, Normal type moves were all physical moves. So the Anime was trying to mimic the games a bit.
I always thought the pokeball thing happened the day before he got pikachu since ash turned that day he turned 10it was technically the day he began to start his journey
What got me the most wasn’t just Gary’s loss, but the fact that Ash felt responsible for Harrison’s loss in the finals
Brock: This is bad. Both of Ash’s Pokémon are Water Types and they’re totally weak against Fire Types!
Bruh
2:26 IT'S A FREAKING FURRRRRREEEEEETTTTT
That Ash vs Gary was so anticipating! Still Charizard vs Blaziken was the Best Fight at that time. I'm surprised you're not reviewing Ash's Orange League Battle. You have to admit Ash really did good.
10:09 there actually wasn't a physical or special split yet, so all normal type moves were still "physical". so in the context of the games, it kinda makes sense? Just wanted to point that out lol. great video man! : D
Definitely better than the indigo league but no where near as good as the sinnoh league.
Its.funny how he is showing the episodes near the end of Master Quest and the Johto League itself but it shows him missing one gym badge on the episode title scene
@@laozdruni6856 no the badge is there it's just mostly black, look real close and you can see some color around the rim.
Zac: This episode was awesome. But, what holds it back a little for me is that most of the wins are one or two shots.
Me, when I am in the pokemon league in the games: Hehe... Yea, that is bad... It made my gaming experience boring as well (while remembering how fun I had one or two shooting the elite four or the champion and how devastated I was being one or two shotted by them)
Johto was definitely the the saga where it shows how a league arc is suppose to be!
Ash gets beaten by my favorite Pokémon of all time so I was understanding
for hoenn please do 7.8/10 too much water
I’ve watched the battle ash vs Gary so many times and I still love it
Despite this being a reupload i watched ot til the end
I know this comment is late, but about the rusty pokeball- I was sure that was BEFORE Ash and Gary left on their journeys. I double checked on Bulbapedia, and they say that it was a few days before he left on his journey. Therefore, no break in continuity.
10:08 all Normal attacks were physical during Gen II so it does make sense
The rusty pokeball incident happened before the beginning of their journeys.
The Silver Conference had the best commentator.
Still kinda lame it hasn't been brought up before the johto league.
I like to think they wouldn’t actually bring it up until a full battle like they had during the Silvery Conference
Oh yay you reuploaded it 😀
5:29 The fact that Squirtle has thug glasses will always be funny.
I want to watch your sinnoh league review but it down darn hope you reupload it soon
7:07 who else heard the Pokemon Theme?
i'm a little sad that ask doesn't fight harrison later in the hoenn leauge because i wanted to see a rematch between them
7:08 nostalgia made into 6 seconds. Impressive
Man Charizard vs Blaziken was lit 🔥

In johto league the winner is Jon Dickson a character in the league who didn't have any screen time in the series gets to appear in the last episode of the league
"This was a great setup for Ash's next adventure. And I wish other regions did the same"
*looks at Journeys*
Yeaaaaaa idk about that one chief
While not *technically* a League, I would like to see a review of the Battle Frontier. Particularly, the battles between Ash and Pyramid King Brandon.
Gary came back in Journey!
Hyper Beam can be countered because in the first two generations it was still a physical move
And the third.
@@mt0791 correct
The call out on the Pokeball is weird too because in the Japanese version, the first episode implies that Ash seeing Gary at Professor Oak's lab is the first time they've met.
In gen 1-3 all normal attacks were physical, so counter would work.
Harrison really needs to return to pokemon
The rusty pokeball was in my perspective a great add. It could’ve happenend because in the 1st episode they didn’t show 24hours, right?
I looked it up and it says that pokeball incident happens several days before their journey
Blue Blaze King that makes sense because Ash didn’t own Pikachu yet and he was not wearing his gen 1 clothing
Now it's time for the battle frontier

This was the second best league after the Sinnoh league imo.
Who realized that Gary’s Blastiose didn’t have its chin part the main colour but instead it’s head is just blue at 8:06
I would've love it if there was a Blaziken Event back in the days for Gold and Silver like in Generation 6 with Mega Blaziken
I kinda wish ash fought silver instead of Gary but still massive improvement from the kanto league plus great video Zac
