it's insane how much work went into creating this game. and it took only a year. and also insane how much of the work was left on the cutting room floor
It is kind of annoying that the unused assets are not able to be freely shared, which is a distinction from the rest of Doom history. Thankfully they're giving verbal permission to use it in mods, but.. sharing the prior alpha assets was never an issue. I think people will end up sharing them around on Archive and elsewhere anyway, which in my opnion is how it should be anyway. All this unused development stuff should be free to see for anyone, purchase or no. all the different health bonuses are fascinating. i wonder if it was originally meant to be more like hexen with a whole bunch of different potion types, especially considering that "throwing" hand sprite. or maybe they just counted as both a health bonus and treasure for points or whatever. neat too that doom 3's lost soul was a reference all along. the mastermind having those full "death" rotations makes me think that maybe it was supposed to be a 'stunned' phase where you'd shoot at its brain after knocking it down. the final mastermind seems too simple and easy even compared to wolf3d so it wouldn't surprise me if there was more to it originally.
Always a great day when there's a new Doomkid video. As someone that's been scouring Ocarina of Time beta content for years your enthusiasm is completely understandable. 🙂
I doubt that's all the pre-release materials that were ever made. I'd imagine a lot was just never saved though. Version control wasn't really a common thing back then and storage was premium, so a lot of stuff was probably deleted or overwritten. It might not represent everything they still have on hand though.
The truncated icon of death music was the original pitch for Doom's intro music before they chose the short sting for the title card. Originally the screen was planned to be like Wolfenstine's with a long theme song. Wolfenstine 3d SNES was quickly coded by ID during Doom's development hence why they had those sounds on hand to stand in doom sound effects waiting to be made some never got replaced like the extra life sound. I think the SNES flamethrower sound is used in Legacy of Rust for the incenerator weapon with extra effects added the mod was apparently made with the limit of using only assets available from ID archives.
2:58 sounds a lot like the intro of Sergeant D and the SOD to me. They also paid homage to this song by using another riff from it in Facing the Spider in Doom 1. I wonder if that's why this was cut? Edit: just remembered the intro is listed as its own track. "March of the SOD"
What a trip.. from dreaming about playing the very first Doom by looking at screenshots on a magazine back in the early 90s to actually be able to go inside WAD files and now getting this treat - more than 30 years later we finally get all of this stuff. When you apologised for being excited I thought - why? It’s completely justified. Doom is such a special game for game dev history, specially. For everyone who loves the process, the behind the scenes and what it all meant to gaming history and recent pop culture it’s quite natural to be excited :)

In case anyone wondering the new song is made after March of the S.O.D. from the album Speak English or Die. the very next song on it - Sargent "D" and the S.O.D. is a basis for Facing The Spider - music of the final boss in Doom

I’m so excited to just have a pack including and uses all the unused sprites and animations for weapons, monsters, decorations. We can finally have an OFFICIAL version of Doom if they were able to implement all their designs
(I just realized someone else caught this well before I just posted my comment...oops!) If I'm not mistaken, the UN121 midi shown at 2:58 might be based on the song 'March of the S.O.D.' by Stormtroopers of Death, which would make sense if it was made for the original games seeing as it was an 80's thrash metal song. Pretty neat, huh?
19:25 The grinning ones look like skibidi toilet. A lot of their source graphics seem to have aggressive sharpening. They seem to pretty consistently smoothed it over though.
This is insane. My excitement was through the roof looking through the id vault ingame, seeing how much more beta content is hidden away feels unreal. This might just be my new favorite source port.
This re-release came absolutely out of nowhere and I'm thankful for it! There's a lot of assets in the archive that I wish made it into the final game, especially that corpse pile sprite, but I suppose that most of them were cut to save on memory and performance, or perhaps it was simply due to hardware limitations. Regardless, I'm grateful that the original Doom games are still receiving love and care 30 years later, and that the franchise as a whole is still alive and well.
I can't wait for Gman's "Doom's KEX Engine Port" video and for you to shred it afterwards. Anyway the arm sprite at 22:47 should be used to release the Dove of Peace™.
That midi at 3:03 sounds a lot like the intro track of the album Speak English or Die from Stormtroopers of Death - March of the S.O.D., maybe it's a leftover that they intended to use before the fight with the spider mistermind in doom 1 (after all the music for that boss is the Sargent D and the S.O.D., track 2 of the same album)
Thanks for showing us where the unused content is stored! THANKS SOO MUCH MAN! I am saving all of this stuff on a thumb drive . I prefer to use slade3 just to view the content in general not to mention toying around with the modding aspect!
24:50 I would love to know what your GZdoom settings are that make it look just like Vanilla Doom, that is pretty darn cool. I wish GZdoom was like that by default instead of its goofy look.
Hey, I also hate the default GZDoom look. I have turned all "upscalers" and other such nonsense off, as well as using a software render. I think there are other options that add to this as well, such as "sprite billboarding" not being set to turn things into cardboard cutouts. I hope you can find all the options in the settings - I am away from my PC right now but if you have a trouble I can tell you exactly how they are in just a few days!
I showed my dad the id vault ingame and he instantly saw the black doom guy with sunglasses and he wanted to play as him so now I’m making it as a (late) gift for Father’s Day
It's good to see unreleased stuff from Doom from 1992 to 1993, with unused Midis and sprites and stuff, and the unreleased Starfox 64 stuff from that dump 3 or 4 years back had an remix of the attack carrier theme from the SNES Starfox.
This is unbelievable. We're seeing things I don't think anyone thought could still exist. So many different stages of iteration. It must have been a ton of work to assemble it for this release. I'd love a documentary about the archiving process, what state the cataloguing organisation was in
I haven't looked through any of this stuff yet myself but all those unused skies are insanely cool. edit: I'm still watching the video while typing this but the unused graphic at 20:41 is really funny to me. I’m so excited to just have a pack including and uses all the unused sprites and animations for weapons, monsters, decorations. We can finally have an OFFICIAL version of Doom if they were able to implement all their designs
(I just realized someone else caught this well before I just posted my comment...oops!)
If I'm not mistaken, the UN121 midi shown at 2:58 might be based on the song 'March of the S.O.D.' by Stormtroopers of Death, which would make sense if it was made for the original games seeing as it was an 80's thrash metal song. Pretty neat, huh?
This might be what I've been waiting for for a decade
3:05 That's the March of the SOD !!
The excitement of the Nintendo gigaleak may have inspired Bethesda to do something like this I bet.
could watch hours of you geeking out over this stuff, super happy with this update.
I can't wait for Gman's "Doom's KEX Engine Port" video and for you to shred it afterwards. Anyway the arm sprite at 22:47 should be used to release the Dove of Peace™.
Hell yeah! Ive been waiting for a bundle like this!
Also to confirm the thing at 0:19 yes it is on switch
Thanks for making this!
My pleasure!
That's a good theory! Would have been cool to have a small pre-bossfight text readout with that music playing
Thanks for showing all of these off. It's all super interesting.
I showed my dad the id vault ingame and he instantly saw the black doom guy with sunglasses and he wanted to play as him so now I’m making it as a (late) gift for Father’s Day
That's an awesome gift, lol
@@DoomKid I know right?
Great video! Love the enthusiasm. Never apologize for it!
Thanks!!
Decino will have a buffet tonight.
Thanks for uploading a bunch of stuff to the mod list for this port dude.
I'm late to reply but you're very welcome
4:27 they really just dumped Bobby Prince's pc on here, didn't they?
It's good to see unreleased stuff from Doom from 1992 to 1993, with unused Midis and sprites and stuff, and the unreleased Starfox 64 stuff from that dump 3 or 4 years back had an remix of the attack carrier theme from the SNES Starfox.
Blue HellKnight doesnt exist. It can't hurt you.
Blue HellKnight: 13:14
Much thanks for covering this. I wonder if Romero is going to do any commentary on it.
I hope so!
UN121.MID almost sounds like it could be an unused level end song, or text transition song. Sounds rad
This is unbelievable. We're seeing things I don't think anyone thought could still exist. So many different stages of iteration. It must have been a ton of work to assemble it for this release. I'd love a documentary about the archiving process, what state the cataloguing organisation was in
but why is Doomguy so caked up
The horde of demons may be thick, but doomguy is thicker
Modders are going to go HAM on all these new assets not seen before!
6:40 seeing rotational death sprites feels cursed but mand they look awesome
The ps5 version feels like the closest the experience has been to PC ever. I highly recommend.
I haven't looked through any of this stuff yet myself but all those unused skies are insanely cool.
edit: I'm still watching the video while typing this but the unused graphic at 20:41 is really funny to me. Assuming that was meant to be the graphic shown when looking to order the other two episodes, they teased The Shores of Hell by just having half of the cyberdemon out of frame.
It's great that they added a screen in the game to view the unused sprites and textures without having to open SLADE
Unused midi is March of the SOD from Stormtroopers of Death which was used as the theme to Headbangers Ball on MTV.
This is such an incredible resource!!! Definitely going to have to incorporate some of these...
What a treasure trove! Enjoyed your excitement for the release too
Doom was my childhood game, and to see all these unused sprites and monsters almost feels surreal.
