I rarely use B&W as I like the color in nature , but if I do decide to have a B&W version , I would use either Lightroom , or ON1.ON1 includes some impressive built-in presets. Lightroom is faster overall than ON1 for most tasks. There is no way to organize and edit offline images in ON1, while Lightroom makes this fairly easy.I like also Silver Efex preset, works well on some nature images, but in my opinion B&W works the best on portraits or architecture. Like you said , some colors needs to be shown on an animal or a bird to fully enjoy their beauty.Great video and tutorial . Very helpful especially when showing the LR sliders and actual adjustments. Thank you for sharing.
ON1 Photo RAW 2020 as my base, and nearly exclusive, editing suite. I sometimes use Tonality CK as a plug-in for black and white conversions, as it is the best B&W software I have seen.
Bridge to ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) processing, then Photoshop. I will check to see how an image looks in B&W when processing initially. I intend on going there I utilize the plug-in NIK Silver Efex Pro to further process in B&W...utilizing the control point technology.
Bernie Bong Thank you for this showing black and white photos. I like color in my photos but every once in awhile one of them just screams black and white. I have never been really happy with my attempts at converting from color to black and white but again I learned some interesting items so I will try again and see what happens. I am excited about this. Again you folks have changed almost all of my past learnings, which were not bad, to help me get better. Thank you!
I love your tutorials Janine. I have always liked converting my wildlife images into black and white, but I learned more from you today. Thanks - And, please keep sending them.
Hi David, we are working hard on them here in lock down... so sad we cannot actually go out at the moment... but I am really glad the videos are helping. Nothing beats the real thing on the river with us though.... we feel very disconnected suddenly as I cannot watch the reaction of the followers and see if the information comes across.
Thank you Janine ! Another great video ! Can’t wait to be with you guys when one day it becomes possible to travel again... Meanwhile, I love your videos, the images and the lot of good tips you share with us. For your question on editing software, I mostly use Lightroom and starting to use Photoshop.
Hi Janine, I went back through some 2008 Botswana pictures looking for some of the criteria you mentioned. I may have found a few. Unfortunately some of my best images prior to that are Kodak and Fujifilm slides which I have not reviewed for over 20 years. That is the great thing about digital and Lightroom. It is so pleasant to go back many years of memories with a key word or touch of a button. Thanks for this video. Now I can purposely apply to photos as I take them.
Hi Peter, it is so much fun though to go through old footage. There is services that digitalise your old slides but I don't think it is cheap. cheers Janine
Hi Michael, thanks so much for tuning in! So glad the videos are helping but nothing beats the real thing on the river with us.... we feel very disconnected suddenly as I cannot watch the reaction of the followers and see if the information comes across.
Hello dear Janine, nice to see you here. Thanks for the very competent video and I hope to see you again in November. I send you warm greetings from Hanover and please stay healthy! Benny Rebel

Hi Sarel, thanks so much for tuning in! So glad the videos are helping but nothing beats the real thing on the river with us.... we feel very disconnected suddenly as I cannot watch the reaction of the followers and see if the information comes across. Lightroom is an incredible software that is absolutely sufficient with 99.9% of the wildlife editing.
Thank you for sharing such idea, it really makes nice B&W in gorgeous looking.... it was really helpfull in learning tips in lightroom though it was less. Thank you once again.
Hi Ranjit, thanks so much for tuning in! So glad the videos are helping but nothing beats the real thing on the river with us.... we feel very disconnected suddenly as I cannot watch the reaction of the followers and see if the information comes across.
@@janine-pangolinphotohost9722 Hi Janine, Yes it did give me some ideas, thank you. I entered a B&W image into the competition, but wasn't selected in the shortlist - expected to be honest when you see the standard of the chosen shots. I have also voted for my favourite, & I will keep watching the channel & enter the remaining categories too. You gotta be in it to win it! 👍
Thanks Janine an interesting video. Here in the UK we seem to have a shortage of exotic cats and Hippos but we do have lots of birds :) Being rather long in the tooth, some 18 months back I decided to go back to my photographic roots and picked up a couple of 35mm cameras deliberately to shoot in black & white. Technically modern DSLRs produce cleaner results even at elevated ISO settings but what wet film demands is that you look and shoot for shape, form and textures or you will end up with nothing and as you demonstrated very well, converting an image to B&W as a fallback to salvaging a duff picture, doesn't really work !
Haha, I am from Germany and know exactly how it feels! Even foxes, rabbits, birds, dear are great subjects! I wish I could show you the river here at the moment.... (I wish we could go out ourselfs!!!) Very glad the videos are helping but nothing beats the real thing on the river with us.... we feel very disconnected suddenly as I cannot watch the reaction of the followers and see if the information comes across.
Great tips but I only have canon DDP so not much chance of getting pictures like yours. Plus live in the UK no big cats. But will try and enter something in the competition.
As usual, most interesting, thank you. For an old non technical person on computers, please may I ask if you could, at some time run a tutorial on the best way to transfer a file from, Windows Picture Gallery to Lightroom, on non-Apple devices.
Hi Colin. Janine is putting the finishing touches to her full Lightroom course and I hope that the answer may be in there for you. We hope to launch the course this week. Cheers. toby
@@PangolinWildlife that will be tremendous, thank you. I battle with getting from Camera and or hard-drive computer picture storage, to Lightroom. It can take me hours, then it's pure luck as I don't know how I did it when it happens! I've watched many on-line tutorials but it doesn't work that easily for me. Stay safe and healthy all of you and thanks for all your interesting work, so appreciated.
Hi Joseph, sorry it was a day late! It was just supposed to help inspire people if they think, they have no b&w images. As it seems you knew quite well what you liked and that is what is important! Yes, I prefer shooting on Manual with an automatic ISO! Since I got that gorgeous 1Dxii I have also kept my ISO uncapped, which I wouldn't recommend on every camera.
@@janine-pangolinphotohost9722 Thanks for info....I have a D850 so going high ISO is not an issue. I am always concerned about grain...maybe I shouldn't be?
This works best for sports also. I have never shot wildlife but when shooting baseball or football and players become backlit from the position of the sun and have no control of my positioning B&W saves the day. Great tip on the clarity slider, that is my best kept serect to pull the hidden details in shadow's of jersey creases and right down to shoelaces it's all comes out. The Shadow's Know and Tell All 🤫
Hi Paul, thanks so much for watching this even though you seem to be just comfortable around photography and post-production. You are so right... and sport and wildlife have so much in common... it's basically the same thing with a different species
Haha, hi Awy 😁... you are so sweet! I love my earrings. I buy a pair wherever I travel as it is a nice and light curio (usually not too expensive) and it reminds me of the places and people I have seen and met. Then I were them with my guest and they are a great ice breaker. My partner shakes his head at me, as I probably have a pair for every day of the year....

Hi Chris, Canon DDP is a great software and can do all the necessary tricks as well. Remember, it is all about the contrasts and shadows

this one I bought with a friend in Kenya at a beautiful little local art shop that supports local women!
Some of your B & W images were pretty bland.
