I’ve had zero issues with this unit and we are approaching a year of service. I have not even changed the filters and I’m still getting a TDS reading of 6. I used to get a TDS of 0 when new. Not bad I say. Recommended for the price. Link in description I think.
I've got the exact same RO unit accept its the 100 gpd and have zero issues with it leaking. Been up and running for over a year now with no problems. But then again, I read the directions.
Great video! I needed a refresher, and I'm planning to use this for hydroponics soon. Regarding the 4:1 waste ratio: I had a boss who worked in the water filtration industry at an engineering level. He explained to me in detail how to build RO systems using inexpensive components and pointed out that these systems are often sold with a high markup. Pro tip: You can take the waste water and either cycle it back into the main input or, if I remember correctly, directly into the RO membrane itself. By installing an adjustable valve on the waste/recycle tube, you can control how much water is discarded as waste and how much is cycled back. Think of it like a T-valve in a recycling loop-though you’ll still need some waste output, as it can’t be reduced to zero. The tradeoff here is between water quality and the lifespan of the RO membrane. In areas where water is expensive (like California), or if you're off-grid and cycling rainwater, this setup can help conserve water. However, if you're filtering pond water or dealing with poor water quality, recycling may not be practical. From what I remember, city tap water is generally fine to recycle, but dirtier sources are less ideal for this method. Alternatively, you can skip recycling and simply use the adjustable valve to control the waste flow, which increases water output. Again, the tradeoff is between water quality and the increased wear on the RO membrane.
just a bit of advice even though you are filtering the water, i would still bypass the water hose and go directly to the faucet. i have noticed just from using different sources it does still affect the taste. granted my knowledge is city water vs well water.
Nice tutorial! Was intimidated getting one but sick of driving to the LFS to get RODI. I put it together now no more toting around jugs. Also I have no leaks from my sistem. Thank You 🙏🏼
The issue WITH ANY filter is that filters need to stay saturated. My whole farm and adjacent lands runs on rain collected. Until I raised the outlet on my filter barrels(previously was next to the lowest point), the water was so-so. Also, by keeping membrane in constant fluid, it will last longer than wet/dry frequencies. Leave the water on a trickle all night and get a glass carboy(5gal) and I guarantee that water will have way less ppm
You cut those white 1/4" water lines properly. Cutting them correctly is essential for keeping the o-ring intact. It's possible that others have cut that line with scissors or something, causing deformation and burrs that damage the o-rings which will then cause leaks. I love these fittings and never had a problem with them.
RO systems are more cheaper now than before. I decided to build one bc I have an existing water filters but didn't do a great job. All i have to do is to buy RO membranes, tubes, and pump and ready to go 😊
Thank you very much! You’ll be happy to know that I am using the same original filters to this day. Only a 6tds difference since new. Product works pretty good! 🤘
I also purchased a cheap model from Amazon. It’s a 6 stage, plus I got an extra DI canister. I made sure to get a model with screw on caps, so I could replace the media with media of my choosing. It’s a MaxWater unit. There are really cheap models that you can’t take apart and change the media, so you have to buy that company’s whole replacement cartridges… which are almost as much as a whole new unit from them. One of those cheaper now, but more expensive later type deals. The reason I got this unit, is if you do some research into the RO membrane… almost everyone uses the same thing, with different labels. Just like the unit itself… basically identical to the one a very popular reef supply store features on their TH-cam channel, without their label on it. The reason I got the extra DI canister, is because when the two mixed bed DI resins are exhausted… I can use one for anion resin and one for cation resin, both color changing. The two resins don’t exhaust at the same rate, so if you use mixed bed… you’re probably changing one too early and wasting it. I have slightly elevated silicates in my tap water (which don’t show up on a TDS meter), so the extra resin helps me out there! The really important things are make sure your water pressure is between the units min/max pressures. If it’s too low, you’ll need a booster pump. This is true of any unit. Also, they’re not miracle workers… if your water is very nasty, don’t expect 0 TDS. You may need additional canisters/filters. My water is about 150 TDS out of the faucet, and 0 TDS out of the unit. My waste to clean ratio isn’t bad. A little worse than 50/50.
Interesting discussion. For the low cost of this unit, I’ll just order a whole new unit instead of the replacement filters. Just unsnap from my wall bracket and snap the new unit on. Disposable RO. 🤘
Thank you for explaining the hook up process. How often should you change the filter? I have a 50-gallon planted tank, i will be using this for my water changes. I ordered the same unit that should be coming soon.
I have 16 tanks and I am still on the original filter over a year later. I see my TDS at 14 and rising each WC so I’d say get new filters once a year for your application. Also, check the price of a whole new unit vs the filter refills as most of the time it is cheaper to buy a whole new unit and have some spare brackets and parts. 🤘
I use the 4 stage twist in Aquatilife system, slightly more expensive at $95 and fill a 10 gallon RV water tank to have spotfree water on hand for washing cars, windows, steamers, irons, cleaning windows for way less money than a DI system.
@@ssaquascapes Yep, and I get 600 gallons of 0ppm water vs. the 200 from a $400 DI only CR Spotless mixbed resin system. EXTREMELY informative and helpful video!! I’ve a 75g freshwater tank, and super hard water, which is affecting my live plants and possibly creating scrape off algae. A few questions: My utility closet is about 20’ from my tank, and I hook a long syphon hose to clean the substrate and add fresh water. Could I hook up the hose (with adapters) directly to the clean output from filter, or do u have to use 5 gallon buckets? Also, I’m assuming I should upgrade to a 150gpd system (or higher), so it doesn’t take a day to fill during water changes? Lastly, does an RO system cause you to do less water changes compared to before you installed? Thanks in advance!
The output line is a very thin hose as seen in this video. I don’t know of an adapter that would work. Either way, the output volume would be the same if you have a larger hose. What I would recommend is buying a long length of the same output line, that skinny white hose, and just run it to your tank to drip in. I use 5 gallon buckets to refill my aquariums, it takes me one hour and 10 minutes to fill a 5 gallon bucket. If you do the math, this may give you an idea how long it’ll take to fill up an entire aquarium with RO. Another option is to get a large water basin, like a 55 gallon drum, and just run RO into that and then run a pump from that barrel to your tank. I’m sure you’ve seen this on MD Fishtanks. Finally, I don’t think RO water extends the length of time between maintenance sessions, it’s really gonna depend on your nutrient and lighting schedule for your tanks. However, algae that feeds on the minerals found in tap water would not grow in RO. You just have to play around and find out what’s right for your tank, and this is half the fun for me, experimenting.
@@ssaquascapes Thanks so much!! This definitely gives me direction for shopping on Amazon, where there seem to be a thousand different RO systems. Appreciate you!!
No problem. If you find a 50-100ft length of that hard white RO line send me a link. I want to get some too but haven’t looked yet. Also, I have had this unit over a year and still have the same filters. My TDS is still only 4-6 through this unit after all this time. 🤘🤘🤘
The system bases its lifespan on gallons/liters filtered. I am not monitoring that, but the deionization filter will turn colors when it is used up. It is a clear filter housing and you can see it color changing from the bottom up. The RO membrane itself has the longest lifespan and should last twice as long as the other filters. I just test each batch of RO and I am still getting 1-5 TDS readings. So I know the filter is still good. When you get larger TDS numbers, you know it’s time to change filters. They sell replacement filters (individual or in a kit) as shown in the instructions. I assume you can find them on Amazon as well. If not, you can order from the company’s webpage.
Hello, thanks for the helpful video! Do you know if I can use this set up for my tropical freshwater tank? My tap water is really hard but can only find info on marine set ups!
Have you had to purchase replacement filters? If so, how and how much. I'm a mobile auto detailer and I like to use DI water but the hard water destroys my DI Resign quickly. I'm looking to drive that cost down with another filtration system before the DI. Thanks
I have not had to replace the filter yet. The DI filter is about 1/2 used (color change). You can get the filters on Amazon, and there is a brochure in the kit with part numbers. However, if you were to replace say, 3 filters of the 4, I’d just buy a whole new unit as you’d pay less than replacing all filters. Most people won’t replace the RO or other filters often though. For detailing you wouldn’t be as worried about chemicals in water as we aquarists are.
I mounted the unit on my laundry room wall where I have access to a water source with a Y connection and a convenient drain where the washer outlet drain is. This handles the waste water, keeps the unit inside, and I also have now added a 100 foot line to just run around the house and hook it on the aquariums. Stay tuned to the channel as I am about to do an RO water update on this unit and how I use it. Thanks for the support. See you around the channel. 🤘
I want to "clean" the water from my fish pond to plant some calcium sensitive plants in it, can this device be applied to the water pump from the pond and run the entire pond water through the system or will that be very unefficient?
RO systems run water through them at literally a trickle. So, I believe this would be inefficient for your needs. But, it would produce pure water if that is what you needed at a rate of 2 gallons per hour.
Maybe, though I don’t think the water goes around it, it should go through it. Either way, still running strong to this day on the same filter. I’ll look at it closer when I replace it. 😃
No idea to be honest. Pretty good though considering I can fill a 5 gallon bucket with RO in 1.1 hours. We never had a water pressure issue here but I don’t know the PSI. Sorry.
I have not seen any of your other videos so I have a question .... why did you get this deionizer filter ... if you can not drink this water? ... you did mention something fish ... Is this for an aquarium? And 2 with out the deionized filter? Is this a cheap way to get good drinking water system on a budget. For an rv/tiny house...
Correct; I use this for fish aquariums. You do not want to drink deionized water for human consumption. It will dilute the minerals in your body from my understanding. They sell a three filter version that does not have the deionizing unit, this would be an RO unit, from my understanding, suitable for human consumption water. However, always double check and do extensive research as I am only relaying information from the company’s instruction sheet.
@@ssaquascapes I was thinking of making my own diy filter or two ... One to feel my water tank and second for drinking I saw this compact set so I watched your video And then 🤔 💡 $70.00 for drinking... You get the idea ... Anyways ❤️❤️ thanks
Correct, you can install it to your outside faucet and allow the waste water to just drip outside. Since this video, I have mounted mine on the wall in my laundry room and have the waste water tube dripping into the same drain that the washer drains in. I put a splitter on the incoming water line so now I just turn the valve and get instant RO. Very convenient now.
I have well water so I need to reduce my water hardness (the GH is so hard it consistently reads at the max most test kits read at) but I also need some hardness to keep cherry shrimp. What ratio do I use to keep my tank water at an ok level?
I have no experience filtering sea water so I can’t comment on the effectiveness of this unit for that application. However, you would need to put the seawater under pressure to force it through this system like I have with the city tap.
So I don’t know what I’m doing and I really need help for my little axolotl, our tap water is terrible so I bought this same RO system, but now I think I might need the Chloramine filter 😅 oh and I will have to remineralize the water ?? Please help, poor guys been tubbing for a week now while the tank cycles and I keep having to buy Aquarium water, it’s killing me lol
The full RO system will remove all of the chloramine from your tapwater. So you should be fine to use straight RO directly from the unit. You will have to re-mineralize if it is required for the axolotl. I have not kept this species so other than the above advice, I could not offer any assistance on axolotl care. Cheers to getting the little guy out of the tub, sounds like he will be in good care. 🤘
Yes, most water conditioner products for aquariums will remove chloramines. You would add this either to your bucket or to the aquarium when using this RO system.
I have since bought a hose splitter for my laundry room and mounted the RO unit on the wall in there. So, it is always attached to a shut off valve (the splitter) and all I have to do is open that valve and it makes RO water. When I need RO, I use 5 gallon buckets and containers which takes 1 hour and 45 minutes to fill 5G (at my water pressure). Hope that helps and thanks for watching! 🤘
I believe so yes. Because the waste water is the bypass water that the membrane can’t filter. Aka more water pressure in the unit than the unit can process. If the unit is pressurized, the water has to bypass somewhere.
Have you seen how much waste water is produced to make ro water cause I've been wanting one myself but don't want to be just wasting the run off waste water cause freshwater is valuable to everyone?
Yes. The waste water is roughly 4:1. A LOT of waste water. I run mine outside and have the unit sitting next to the garden/flower bed (uphill) so I justify my massive waste water that way. I suppose you could get some barrels to collect the waste water and use in other tanks that you’re using tap water in. Or save that water for drought watering, or even drinking. Point is, I agree. It is a waste. But no way around it that I know of unless you have a very expensive system.
I would imagine yes if the fittings are the same (ro tubing). All the instructions say is to not deionize drinking water. In theory it is drinkable just filtered with the deionization filter disconnected.
None. I actually store it inside the house and go outside to hook it up to my garden faucet. So, it gets more abuse than if you installed it permanently in one spot. I use it almost every weekend to make RO and it has never leaked or failed to produce 0-1 TDS RO. It is slower than the big systems, but if you have the time and keep the water pressure low (half of the faucet max open) you should be happy with the inexpensive system. If you want one, I think I have an affiliate link in description. Thanks for watching! 🤘
Yes. That container is designed to transport aquarium water. Either saltwater or fresh. Has a nice sealing cap and it is free from all leeching type chemicals. You can find these HDPE containers at most local fish shops or order on Amazon. I have provided a link below for Amazon. amzn.to/481m7wg Hope that helps!
An RO system need 50 micron filter and minimum 850psi (55bar). This system is not near what it claims. If you do a TDS test ( total dissolved solids) the water will fail miserably
OK. I am interested in this video so far. But I have to ask you this. Where is this stuff made. Sorry, but I don’t buy Chinese made crap. That’s just the way it is. I don’t support communism. Bottom line. Thanks for your time.
Is not reverse osmosis. Ro is to remove salt from sea water and you need minimum 50 atmosphere pump to to take sea water thru the membrane. Yours is just a fresh water filter. Stop advertising as a ro. Is definitely not!
You might wanna do more research. While RO was first developed as a way to remove salt from seawater, it was highly inefficient. An RO membrane is an RO membrane. You are referring to what is now commonly referred to as desalination. 🤙
@@ssaquascapesI agree, LucianStrole is incorrect. We use this same RO process at the factory I am employed. We make RO water buy running city water through crabon filters then softeners and finally RO membranes. Out pump that pumps the water through the RO membranes runs at 150psi. Once we have made the RO water we then use that water to run it through DI cathode and anode bottles to manufacture DI water at a quality of 19 micro siemens. Once all of this is completed we use this water for our manufacturing processes.
Thank you for confirming and this is amazing to have your knowledge on this subject. I would be inclined, to actually pay for one of these units and send it to you to get an expert review.
how long does it last until needing to be replaced? do they sell replaceable filters or you have to buy a whole new one for replacement
Yes. I use this system on all my 16 freshwater aquariums. 🤘
Much appreciation. We used your link.
Thanks! Glad the video helped you out! I appreciate the support!
For detailing you wouldn’t be as worried about chemicals in water as we aquarists are.
awesome, thanks, how much tds is your tap water?
TDS is 174 ppm from the tap.
So you are leaving yours outside???
I guess filling up big jugs is good and can do it anywhere.
Think you need to remove the label from the blue filter insert in big tube.
Maybe, though I don’t think the water goes around it, it should go through it. Either way, still running strong to this day on the same filter.
I’ll look at it closer when I replace it. 😃
@@ssaquascapes Good to hear you like it! I’ve been considering one for a while now. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching! 🤘
Curious as to what your water pressure is.
I think I'll need a booster.
No idea to be honest. Pretty good though considering I can fill a 5 gallon bucket with RO in 1.1 hours. We never had a water pressure issue here but I don’t know the PSI. Sorry.
do i need to add minerals to the water ?
Depends on your application and the inhabitants in the aquarium. However, most do recommend remineralizing RO water. I personally don’t.
One to feel my water tank and second for drinking I saw this compact set so I watched your video
And then 🤔 💡 $70.00 for drinking... You get the idea ... Anyways ❤️❤️ thanks
My pleasure. I assume at this price, it’s cheaper than building one. PS: over a year later and I still have nearly pure RO from this system (14tds)
So you can directly put this into a hose faucet thing outside and don't have to install it into a sink underneath
I would use straight RO and remineralize with Shrimp GH (Seachem make this I believe).
Will this set up be good for plants?
Yes, I use this system for all my aquatic plants. For houseplants, I am not familiar with their mineral needs.
Could you use this for sea water to fresh waster for drinking?
Get yourself a standard for testing your meter
Thanks
Great video. Even I can follow :0) Anyone know about chloramines? Curious best way to test for it.
Your standard test kits will detect chloramine. Remove or neutralize with an aquarium water treatment solution.
Is it cool to run the RO membrane with the sticker on? I put mine in with the sticker on and remembered later to take it off.
Like on the cylinder wall? I think so. Don’t know if mine is on. 🤣
What can I do to remove chloramines if I do end up buying this could I just use a conditioner to remove it?
Yes, most water conditioner products for aquariums will remove chloramines. You would add this either to your bucket or to the aquarium when using this RO system.
Do you let water flow into Ro all the time or do you only use it when in need and if yes then how do you store ro filter?
I have since bought a hose splitter for my laundry room and mounted the RO unit on the wall in there. So, it is always attached to a shut off valve (the splitter) and all I have to do is open that valve and it makes RO water.
When I need RO, I use 5 gallon buckets and containers which takes 1 hour and 45 minutes to fill 5G (at my water pressure).
Hope that helps and thanks for watching! 🤘
Hmm. 5 gallons ro from walmart is about 7.50 here. I wonder if it's worth the effort, I guess it depends on personal preference
Can i add straight RO to my aquarium or what is needed to add to RO water ?
I use straight RO to do water changes but some people will remineralize the RO water before using. It will depend on your inhabitants and use case.
If this is hooked up to a float valve will the waste water constantly be wasting water from the faucet being constantly open?
I believe so yes. Because the waste water is the bypass water that the membrane can’t filter. Aka more water pressure in the unit than the unit can process. If the unit is pressurized, the water has to bypass somewhere.
Hi, you can drink water as a family, thank you
You may drink RO water but, do not use the Deionization filter. It is not good to drink DI water consistently.
Thanks man 😎
Glad the vid helped.
The deionizer get rid of everything in the water.
Yup. Just remember, not suitable for drinking.
i don’t think my city uses chloramine but i don’t knwo
You can usually find a water report on their website or call/visit and ask for a water report.
Or simply ask over the phone if they use chloramine.
@@ssaquascapes Thanks!
Setting the waste water to flower or plant isn't a good idea as there's more of salt content in the waste water so the plants might dry up
Where is the salt coming from?
Set up a siphoning channel or line back into a secondary holding container which a second system can cycle through to purify multiple times over.
Can I add a minerals and alkaline filter insted of de deonization and use for drinking ?? thank you
I would imagine yes if the fittings are the same (ro tubing). All the instructions say is to not deionize drinking water. In theory it is drinkable just filtered with the deionization filter disconnected.
If you found one that works tell me i was wanting to do the same
Have you had any trouble since setting it up?
Is the plastic water can safe to use?
Yes. That container is designed to transport aquarium water. Either saltwater or fresh. Has a nice sealing cap and it is free from all leeching type chemicals. You can find these HDPE containers at most local fish shops or order on Amazon. I have provided a link below for Amazon. amzn.to/481m7wg
Hope that helps!
what is the TDS of the source water?
TDS is 174 ppm from the tap
Mine leaked at the di threaded cap... Tightening it down fixed it
Thanks for the feedback. Glad it was just a loose fitting and not something more major. 👍🏻
Just add more teflon on the cap thread that might solve.
Is this the 4 stage?
Correct. 4 stage with the DI filter.
@@ssaquascapes ty brother. Gonna buy this today and try it out.
@dettigerkyle1230 still using mine with original filters. You should enjoy it.
Video angle extremely disturbing...fish bowl?
It was filmed on a go pro if you are talking about the weird fish-eye video quality. I’ve since gotten better equipment. 🤘
It's just fine
An RO system need 50 micron filter and minimum 850psi (55bar). This system is not near what it claims. If you do a TDS test ( total dissolved solids) the water will fail miserably
My tds read 0 for over 8 months of use.
It now reads 4-8 after more than a year on the same filters.
Please use/test a product before making claims.
Clean thoughts, NOPE. 😁😁😁
🤣🤣
I knew someone had a mind like me. 🤣🤣
OK. I am interested in this video so far. But I have to ask you this. Where is this stuff made. Sorry, but I don’t buy Chinese made crap. That’s just the way it is. I don’t support communism. Bottom line. Thanks for your time.
Definitely China, like most of our aquarium equipment.
Whats up with your thumbnail? 70 dollars? Its FIVE HUNDRED
What are you talking about? 🤣🤣

It seems that this little unit has the same stages as your large RO facility. After all this time I STILL have not changed the original filters and still get 12TDS from this unit.
Lemme know if you want to collaborate on a review!🤘🤘
What test kit did you use to test the chlorine? Can you tell me the product
