    In other BGA solder demonstrations (non tesla related) i see them masking the surrounding area with kapton tape to protect it a bit from the heat and moving around. Kapton tape could also be used to mark the spot where the chip has to be instead of marking the pcb with a blade.

    This is insane. Nice job. Is this normally done by a robot?

      at a proper factory - sure, but at your phone repair shops and hobbyist places? definitely not.
      More skilled people use hot-air stations, but I never got to work it properly, IR reflow is super simple on the other hand - no airflow to blow chips away or overheat beyond the target temp.

    • @FalconFour
      @FalconFour 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At manufacturing time, yes, all this is done by a robot. The solder is applied as a paste using a metal stencil similar to how T-shirt graphics are printed, so there are no solder balls involved. A robot just has to pick up parts off a reel and place them on the boards, often at ridiculously high speed. Then, the whole board is run through an oven and everything melts into place. For rework, though... it's fairly more complicated, as you first have to remove what was already placed by robot...

    I gotta get mine re-done. Black screen, probably stuck at boot up. Do you do this as a service for others? I can't find anybody in Chicago land area who can do this. Nobody has the Infrared reflow workstation. I can pull the board out to send it in without any issues. Tesla on the other hand don't have any MCUs in the area for foreseeable feature.

    Hello i have a unsupported model S p85 2014 mcu1 super laggy and freezes so i bought a muc2 from ebay. I live in puerto rico no tesla support here. May i ask you can i clone the emmc from muc1 to mcu2 because its not plug and play. When i tried on the mcu2. I got a model x with the milage and all info from the donor car. I have a tool for tesla called loki. But doesnt have a clone mcu option . Its more for other thing. Support from the tool i have. Told me that with jtag emmc programer i can do a clone and it will work. Do i have to remove the actual chip and then with that program read it. Or can i with a pin out read and dump on mcu1 and then muc2. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Maybe 500K Teslas are going to need this chip replaced, someone has to figure out how to do it for a reasonable price. I would have no problem getting the Tegra board out of the car and back in. I have done SMD prototyping but not BGA. What I have not figured is how to download the data off of the chip. Have you done a video on how to backup and restore the data files?

    I had my 4/2016 Model S with 64K mi screen go black two days ago. There was no way I could re-boot it so I took it to Tesla service today. The said a rebuilt/exchange MCU was $1146 installed. They said I could have the HW2 Infotainment upgrade for $2250 and I told them to go ahead with that. Awhile later they said they couldn't do the upgrade only the exchange because my S didn't have electric trunk lifts and they weren't allowed to do the infotainment update on my car as the version for my car was not available. I wonder if I try to read the chip and do the BGA soldering and fail if they would know the difference. At this point I am waiting to see if they can restore the file system and bring it back to life without spending > $1000. For over two years I have been complaining that the web browser worked when I got the car, then it stopped playing my USB drive, weeks after that it would not re-boot until I removed the USB and now it just plain will not boot. I was surprised however that the autopilot worked perfectly on the way to Tesla service with the black screen.

      The "fun" part is that these chips cost about $10, or less if buying in bulk. You could essentially buy all the equipment from China for the cost of the service you were offered at the dealership. As stated in the video, it's even possible to do this with an air soldering station costing $40-50 or less. Many people think electronics are some kind of black magic, but it isn't any different than any other skill. Painting a picture is way more difficult. But it's a great video. So kudos to him for showing this :)

    I paid Tesla service $175 to see if my EMMc chip was actually bad and they gave the car back with with corrupted files repaired and the MCU working like new, but that only lasted about two months. A month ago the music stopped playing and I did the two button salute and it went black and stayed black. I scheduled service but that was a month out. They were supposed to call when they had the part, a replacement Tegra board. They don't want to talk on the phone but with great difficulty I got a service guy to call. A person from my local service assured me I could bring it in sooner and that he would call when the part came in. He never called! I texted them on the appointment date and said I was not bringing the car unless they had the part. The guy on the phone said they would fix it while I waited but when I got there they said they would let me know when it would be done and the guy didn't seem to know if they did or did not have the part. Now they say it will be there for a week and it is cued for service, whatever that means. The good news is now they want $310 labor & parts instead of $1146. The guy on the phone said it would get a new 64 GB chip, but they guy there said I would get exactly what I had so looks like $300 every 4 yrs. I don't know what I am getting except the service guy said I would have a 1 yr warranty on the repair; I doubt in writing.

    • @greentheonly
      @greentheonly  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reportedly Tesla started to replace just the Tegradaughterboards. Those are now outfitted with 64G EMMC of which still only 8G remains in use so it should last quite a bit longer.

    • @delschier1419
      @delschier1419 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@greentheonly I got conflicting info from the service guys as whether it is upgraded to 64GB, where did you get that info?

    • @greentheonly
      @greentheonly  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe separate tegra daughterboard was only ever available with a 64G EMMC from Tesla (and very recently at that). At least I never heard of the smaller parts sold separately.
      If you get whole MCU replacement - for that depending on how old their stock is it might be old 8G or new 64G.
