Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori (the composers for the original vision of this game series) were excellent composers in their own right - most of the instrumentation for the first game wasn't live, and were samples. They just didn't have the budget - gaming wasn't big, and the company they worked for, Bungie, wasn't a big gaming studio. That this theme was composed as well as it was, and to fit the game it was made for, was a miracle unto itself. With Halo 2 and onward they had no problem acquiring more live talent for the compositions. The second game, Halo 2, still prominently featured digitized or sampled tracks - but many more instruments and general ambient and aura sounds were recorded specifically for the game. The third game in the series (and onward) featured live recordings prominently - taking responsibility on the recording of most of the character themes, and some key pieces during gameplay. Each of the games were designed with the sound in mind. O'Donnell in particular was chiefly responsible for how the different acts of the movements correspond to things happening in the game.
They used to, as a gaming company, actually document their development- you could hear them directly talk about the audio department in each game, and its development. (If you weren't aware before, game development is essentially artistic hell.) The developers had many tribulations on their way to releasing each title, getting better every step of the way. That the first game could produce such a well-crafted composition under such immense pressure is nothing short of amazing!
P.S. They did indeed work with Steve Vai for Halo 2, but I was unaware of Mr. Misha Mishnoor of Periphery also working with the series of games until the comments on this video! Very cool!

One of the fun things about the melody is that the composer, Marty O'Donnell, threw it all together in less than a day, because the demo of the game was going to be shown off at an apple expo and they needed a theme for it ten minutes ago. The theme he slapdashed together ended up being so memorable, it became part of the game's, and later the franchise's, dna, and here we are 20 years later, still getting that twinge in our chest when we hear that piano.

Halo was a huge part of my teenage years and this song is definitely on my soundtrack of life.
Many a night in the early 2000s my friends would gather into one friends house all weekend long while his mother worked night shifts so we had the whole house to ourselves. 14-15 year old boys, with a full fridge of food, soda, internet access, and video games with no adult supervision, no cares in the world and a whole life ahead of us with endless opportunities. Loads of laughs. Plenty of victorious moments; a few stinging losses. Amazing times. Many MANY standby bluescreens while the server looked for a new host because someone quit the game or someone was hitting the standby button on their router trying to cheat. Countless bombs armed and flags taken. A plethora of, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!" and numerous counts of, "get F*@&ed kid!! Owned!!". My friends and I kicked SO many rocks as Master Chief into the hole on Silent Cartographer in Halo CE that we could have probably have filled it up. "Alright, I think i'm done... why did you guys start another game? Oh S*#% it's Lockout! Okay, I'll play this one and i'm done!" - "Okay, good win. Now i'm.... Okay, after THIS one.... Oh duuuude it's one flag on Ivory Tower!!". Rinse and repeat for HOURS. "Wort wort wort".
    *Gained the lead*
    *Lost the lead*
    *Tied the leader*
    *Gained the lead*
    *Lost the lead*
    *Tied the leader*
    *Lost the lead*
    "Triple kil- KILL-TACULAR!!!"
    *Gained the lead*
*Game over!* All within the waning moments of a match.
And who could forget the pleasant and ever-so-respectable post game lobbies that were completely articulate and inspired great moments of humanity and unity? Heh... Those were the days. Yeah, Halo is still around, and many of my friends still play, but it's somehow not the same anymore. We only have time for a handful of rounds a week before we have to get off and rest up before going back to work and live an adult life and pay bills. Ah well..
Obligatory Dark Souls 3 "Soul of Cinder" suggestion if we're still doing video game tracks. Also, well done Geebz.

I loved watching you get excited about who might cover this song with the shoutout to Periphery. Shows that you've truly grown to love some of the music you've been exposed to. And its fun to think about how they would interpret this song, I think they'd be a great fit, same as you. If you'd like to see some metal interpretation of soundtrack stuff, Epica did an album called "The Classical Conspiracy" where they did metal covers of film scores like Pirates of the Caribbean and Spiderman. They also did Verdi's Dies Irae, and some other really great selections. Totally worth checking out!

I have never thought before why the melody of this soundtrack worked so much for a shooter game in the space. After watching your analisis i can think about the melodic lines as a musical representation of confrontation in a battlefield... i mean, the instruments even if they are classic ones, they are playing not in a very harmonic way, but much more like a fight, while one line takes protagonism others keep going, but with an underlying order and logic provided by the drums and cellos setting the rythm and power, like artillery in the backgroung. The intro sets a mood for something old, misterious, sacred or meaningful. Even if it is an orchestral piece, it has more of a folk feeling in the melody and some sounds effects too. Really the composer hit the right dots about what makes something epic feel epic.

Hahaha that's cool! You should look into Nobou Uematsu's stuff, he's the main composer for those Final Fantasy games, classic stuff! He also has a rock band that covers the video game music The Black Mages, they are super sick aswell

Video games are a HUGE part of the sound track of life for many of us. Good stuff, Geebz. I love how diverse you are.
Incubus has a song or two that were either featured on later versions of Halo, or were "inspired by" and wound up on a Halo collection I have.
The London Philharmonic Orchestra has a couple albums out of game themes, from Halo to Super Mario to Tetris to Legend of Zelda.

Big Halo fan here. This is one of my favorite compositions that was written three days before the game demoed at MacWorld, inside of a car. The music has always been one of the most memorable and... *iconic* parts of this game, composed by Martin O'Donnell with the help of Michael Salvatori.
Here's some fun facts about this theme in particular:
    - The non-monk singing you hear in the song is the composer himself, Martin O'Donnell, not a professional vocalist. His vocals also show up in Under Cover of Night, and one of his colleagues mistook it for a girl singing.
    - The Halo 2 version of this song has a guitar overlay by Steve Vai
    - The song itself, as well as several others on the soundtrack, feature a mix of live orchestration and synthesized sounds samples, which is probably why you noticed that some of this music didn't sound like live instruments.
    - Marty's three themes for this song which he has repeated all throughout the original trilogy, are "ancient, mysterious, and epic", a feeling he captured through the monks, the badass percussion, and the wonderful melody of the strings and cello.
    - The melody for this theme song is inspired from "Yesterday" by the Beatles, but definitely not a copy of it. Marty has said that it's mostly in the progression: one high point, one low point, and four sort of irregular phrases.

  • @calebturner405
    @calebturner405 3 ปีที่แล้ว

This was all done live, and recorded and mixed for the game. The man behind it all, Martin O'Donnell, who has a channel here on youtube btw, even threw his voice in there with the chorus for the melodies. Halo as a series, minus 4 and 5, has some of my favorite videogame music ever. Steve Vai helped with the main theme for Halo 2 so check that out when you get the chance, along with Zealous Champion, one of my favorites from Halo 2.

Loved the reaction! Thanks!
