- In this continuation of the "Climbing the Rating Ladder" series I take on players of various ratings levels while pointing out typical mistakes and spots for improvement along the way (possibly my own!? :)). Here I commentate two 5+5 games against a player rated 1393 on Chess.com.

Why does beating players in this rating level seem so easy when John does it lol
Yea this 1393 guy would easily whoop me but is nowhere in these games
In that 2nd game especially, white suffered from what I refer to as "cascading failure" when a bad decision leads to further bad decisions to try to compensate and makes the game more hopeless by the moment.
The compounding effect of mistakes.

@@JohnBartholomewChess would you be willing to do a video against players of your own rating (maybe friends) where you play unrated games and intentionally blunder a pawn and talk about how you make the game interesting/complicated without making them outright bad?
I feel like weaker players (like me) lash out and lose, but do it because they know if they DON'T they'll also lose. How do you deal with the catch 22?

Stick with the process. You can get from 1200 to 1700 in a year or so.

Watched this tonight and five minutes later I'm in a game where my opponent put their queen in front of their king. Wouldn't have known how to seize that opportunity--or even realized it was an opportunity--before watching this video. Ten minutes later I had a win that I wouldn't have had otherwise. Thanks John! Thanks for another great climbing the rating ladder video, John! I’ve been reading Chernev’s book “Logical Chess,” which I’ve heard you recommend. Over and over he talks about the loosening effect of moving wing pawns, especially in front of the castled king, which weakens the squares around the king. Since reading his book when I see h6, I start looking for ways to exploit the weakened g6 square. It’s helpful to see this example of taking advantage of an early h6 even before castling, not so much because of a weakened g6 square, but because of the lag in development and the opportunity to favorably open the position. Thanks for sharing!

I really think that playing these lower rated player are some of the best and most instructive videos of the "Climbing the Rating Ladder" series. man two months ago I was an 1100-1200. I hit 1559 today. And if one thing has helped me more than any other it's this series of videos. Otherwise I feel like I would still be rushing and moving pieces aimlessly. I know John hates his "perfectionist tendencies" but I think that's the best part about these videos. They've gotten me away from my dubious tendencies!

Whenever you do a climbing the rating ladder video, you could use a fake account, in which you have the same “rating” as the person you are facing... most of the videos I saw from you, while they were incredibly helpful, and I am a huge fan... I’m afraid that most people often play more conservative against you... because they are afraid of your 2600 rating as I would be

I actually think that would be questionable. The rating of the opponents would take a much greater hit and they get "used" for instructive purposes without knowing facing a much higher rated IM. They way it is, they know what is happening and if they play more conservative, there is no problem with that actually.
Most chess sites don't take kindly to losing games on purpose, precisely to stop players from playing below their level. He might be able to do unrated games on a blank account maybe, but I don't think it'd be possible to keep the same "rating" for long otherwise without essentially "cheating" the system.
Thanks for using Chessable! I think you're correct that people play differently when they see my rating/title. I've thought about doing what you describe, but, as others have said it's a bit debatable, ethically speaking (search "smurfing" to see others' thoughts on it in the gaming world). I may eventually find a workable solution, however.
I think it that could be possible but maybe something like an instructive speedrun to 2000, like players like Hikaru and chessbrah are doing.
Johm please review the game which recently happened between 14 year old keymer and magnus carpesn, i feel it was really instructive, if we get tour insight on that game it will be useful
Most of the people at low ratings don’t seem to think about their opponents moves before they play their own
Wasn't RE1 a good in between move to prevent the pawn move and then you could still go for taking the knight in A5
could black take d4 on move 8 in the first game? or would there be a problem?
Perhaps Black should have played Qd8 after Nd5, as uncomfortable as that might be.
First game was very useful, second, they just tilted a few moves in and threw it away.

Why did you say black should have played f5 before e4? If e4 (that happened) and Bxe4 he has Qxe4 and he's up a piece for a pawn. Am I reading this wrong?
What do you do, if they take your pawn on d4?

In which position? If they capture early on d4, we can recapture Nxd4 and enjoy good potential with the open lines.

Hi John. Here is a question that I've asked others but was unable to get any good replies. They say that chess is a logical game, so, in the rules of chess, how is it possible for a piece, that is in an absolute pin, to give check? A check is a threat to capture the king on the next move, but, if the piece is in an absolute pin, it can't legally move, so, how can any check given by that piece be valid? Good luck with this one!!
Haha, I know what you mean; that scenario can be a bit confusing. On the flip side, it might be equally or even more confusing if a piece in an absolute pin was *not* allowed to give check.
The way I see it is, you have turns. Despite a piece being pinned absolutely, you can threaten check. The idea in my head being that on your next turn you could 'capture' the king and win on that turn, so that the opponent wouldn't be able to 'capture' your king on the following turn. That's the way it makes sense in my special little brain. :)
@@edwardmensforth4761 Hi Edward. Not sure if I understand you here. My argument was that if a piece is in an absolute pin, it cant move, so how can it threaten to capture anything?
@@davehumphreys1725 Hi! :) The point of an absolute pin to me, is that if the pinned piece was to move, then the opponent could 'capture the king' on the next move. I understand chess doesn't play to the absolute king capture - you get to a position where the king cannot escape. To me, this means that whatever happens, on the next turn you could capture the king. As chess is played in turns - you have your turn, then the opponent has theirs, it suggests to me that if you were able to 'capture the king' on your turn, you'd immediately win. Therefore your opponent wouldn't get another turn. If they never get another turn, then your piece isn't truly 'pinned', as the pin can never be taken advantage of.
Imagine a puzzle where you have mate in one. You have one move and the opponent does not ever get a move. If they are never able to get a move in, then they would never be able to capture your king - thus, any pins or threats are immaterial. The pin is only an absolute pin to me, if you cannot 'capture the opponents king' on that turn - as movement would allow the opponent to immediately 'capture *your* king' when you've moved.
I don't feel I'm explaining it very well - but in the case of chess, you have a move, then the opponent has a move - only when you're finished. If, on your turn, you end the game - then the opponent never gets to exploit any traps or tricks. They've lost. Hence, to me, a pinned piece can still threaten check.
A piece in an absolute pin can still move along a file or diagonal between the king and the pinner. For example if a bishop was pinning the queen on the long diagonal, the queen would still be able to move on that diagonal between the king and the bishop (and capture the bishop). But I know that's not what you're getting at.

Why isn’t Qf6 on move 15 a good move in the first game?
Because the d8 rook is defended, and White would not yet be threatening Qxh8 due to the perpetual check idea ...Qg4-f3-g4.
What was wrong with 15. Qf6? Dosent that win another piece?
The d8-rook is defended, and another problem is that Qxh8 wouldn't be a threat yet, since Black would have a perpetual with ...Qg4-f3-g4+.

Seems to be less cheats here lately in these videos
there is not much cheating in online chess. People tend to overestimate the problem and the frequency of such attitude
John, I think you should atleast pick opponents >1500 at the very least. It's pretty dull and unrelatable when your opponent is dropping material at almost every move. Also, doesn't give much learning material either.
Maybe you can play weaker opponents like this one in longer time formats though.
I enjoy the content. Maybe I just fetishize extremely strong chess players passively, instructively destroying their opponents and telling us exactly how he did it.
As a low rated chess player, I learn from these, so to each his own.
@@stevend6067 remember when john played an 1100 in the same series few days back? It was a great video because the opponent wasn't dropping pieces easily. Hence, I added that it should be fine to play lower rated players in longer time formats.
I like that he varies the ratings he plays against in this series. I was around 800 when John started posting his rating ladder series, and 1300 seemed unimaginable to me back then. It's very instructive if you're low-rated. But there are plenty of videos where he plays 1500-2000 rated players in this and other series of his
