Mungo Jerry concert - Western Springs Stadium, Auckland, New Zealand, 25th January, 1972. Great memories of the night! The support band was Cruise Lane. THANKYOU RAY DORSET.
About a year ago, while randomly watching unfamiliar music videos on TH-cam, I found "In the summertime." My boyfriend and I both instantly loved it, so much so that we replayed it until both of us had memorized the entire song. (We RARELY agree on anything..... but Ray Dorset got us to agree simultaneously on two occasions: 1. "In the Summertime" is absolutely AWESOME in every way, and 2. He's such a rockstar that even when he gets "in the zone"-ed out like at 2:52, it makes him even cooler!!! I play this song with close friends and have had memorable random dance sessions with people I barely knew.... Good times. Thanks for the happy moments I've shared with others made while listening to your jams. Much love and appreciation.
“In the summertime was a load of rubbish .” ?? Yeah. Here we are in 2024 still looking it and Mungo Jerry up. So many musicians would love have one such load of rubbish. A good song is timeless. In the summertime in proof.
Playing the 'Electronicaly Teasted' Album and it's outstanding! 'In the Summertime' was and still is great, loved it back on the radio in 70! Awesome music from MG
I f'n love this dude. Just discovered him. Was familiar with one song but had never seen him. When I found the video of him playing in the summertime from 1970. Fishnet shirt, pink scarf topped by a fro....he pulls it off.....and then I found baby jump....yesss....i am fanatical.... I want Ray to live forever....i want him to know how happy he and he alone makes me with his music and it's even better when i can see him actually performing especially in the way back machine....live forever ray....please stay around....love brother.
I was a 1957 baby, so grew up with Mungo Jerry influencing my teenage and young adult years, so thank you Ray for your contribution! The music of Mungo Jerry, provided the feelgood factor! The songs on the albums were an eclectic mix of rock 'n' roll and blues, some quite obviously blues music taken straight off the streets of New Orleans (San Francisco Bay Blues), but every track was lovingly played and Mungo Jerry had its own unique style. Some of the bands of our era had a style that you could always tell who it was just by the opening few bars - Mungo Jerry, The Sweet, T Rex, Mud, Showaddywaddy etc were all easily identifiable. I won't mention Status Quo - the reason they were identifiable was that the opening "12 bar blues" chords were the same for every song! Ray Dorset, with his bushy sideboards, was the front man and the bands always seemed to be really enjoying laying down their music and just having a good time, and that made us have a good time too! We won't talk about David Cassidy and Donny Osmond who ruined the summer of 1973 - every girl you asked out was "saving herself for Donny or David"............... Thank you Ray! You're a real music legend!
Cool interview. The "In the Summertime" video is just quirky enough, perfection. Sometimes musicians with too much money are too polished and boring. I picture melodies just playing in Ray's head. Glad he shared them with all of us. I can't believe Paul, he must not have had a brain for recognizing real musical originality and talent. Kinda feel sorry for what he gave up.
There is only one Ray Dorset. Been a fan of his since 69 he was a big part of the sountrack to my youth. " Have a drink have a drive go out and see what you can find , life's for living that is our philosophy"
Ray Dorset is Mungo Jerry he’s such an icon no one can take away that image, he’s too strong a personality plus he can carry the sound of the band still in the 2020s I’m certain. Good old Ray with his microphone hair and big F.O sidies haha good old dirty barsteward lol 😂
I wonder what Paul king and Colin earl feel today. I am sure that they regret that they tried to fire ray from the band. Ray Dorset is Mungo Jerry, and is still performing and writing great music. You don't hear much about king and earl. Their loss. Maybe when Colin earl is playing one night at his local boozer, ray will go down and have a jam with him.somehow I don't think so. However joins rays band he will always be Mr Mungo Jerry Alright. Alright. Alright.
Growing up, and really right up until recently, I only knew Mungo Jerry from "In the Summertime" and figured all of their music must have that same kind of feel (I love that song, btw).......a few days ago I happened upon a live performance they did around 1972 or 73....and wow....very different...Ray was actually really a rocker....he was giving it everything he had.....came away with a much different image of Mungo Jerry...it's a shame they didn't get as much recognition for some of their other material (at least in the US....from what I understand, they were much bigger in the UK). (As an aside.....how the heck can you fire Ray Dorset from Mungo Jerry? He IS Mungo Jerry.....)
Everywhere except for Australia who's radio stations were having dispute with british record companies over royalties. In Australia "In The Summertime" was recorded by The Mixtures and reached #1. I always preferred the Mungo Jerry version which was available in the jukeboxes. Other British songs recorded by Australians were Jeff Christie's "Yellow River" by Jigsaw: Mary Hopkin's "Knock Knock, Who's There" by Liv Maesson. Liv had the dsitinction of recording one of the lowest score on the Sydney talent show New Faces.
This will sound completely daft, but did you, or do you have a sister called Jasmin ? Who worked in the wardrobe of the theatre when Lauren Bacall was in London ? (1972 ?)
Interesting, his look to me is truly unique and sets him apart from the cookie cutter musicians put out now. I would love to know what his DNA shows, truly unique.
Ray "Mungo Jerry" Dorset, should be enrolled into the rock and roll hall of fame. Pure legend.
I was 9 when Summertime was at the top of the charts. World was totally different then. Life was easy and music was shaping the youth.
Love Ray Dorset

Mungo Jerry is a living legend.
A legend in YOUR own mind??? :P
I was born in 73 but I still feel that Mungo Jerry is an Icon and the original version of in the summertime is one of the best songs of all time.

Just a humble and gracious guy.A musicians best friend!

In the Summertime is the greatest song ever to listen to in stereo. It bounces from one speaker to the other like no other song.

That is the ultimate "summer doper-slacker" song. It will live forever.
Love your music Ray.

Those other guys can’t do it like Mungo Jerry. Not even close.
says a sentence or two then...;"plays random riff or chord" xD Love Mungo Jerry

Did ray said "fired from the band" haah, my man mungo, you are the fucking band! May you live long and prosperous
What a daft move to get rid of Ray Dorset. Not a good financial move in my eyes.He is Mungo Jerry. The voice says it all.Pun intended.

He's just dying to jam during this whole interview!!!! I love him so much!
Awesome, God bless you.

Mungo Jerry skiffle rockabilly af
Моя любимая песня
🌟
The Colin Earl cover was/is abhorrent!!!
capo Ray!
❤️
What gave your song the cabasa sound?
First
Omg it's him!!!!
what happend to the "Aussi" Bob Deslee?
Funny, Colin went on to act as road manager for his brother's band Foghat. On the odd days, he used to cut everybody's hair!
I think artists are a lot more interesting after they have had their big hit then they have to pick themselves up later and show people what they got
?porque no ponen subtitulos en español?
I want that guitar strap now
Make one
I know lees kick the breadwinner out of the band and drive into obscurity. No wonder Ray can smile.
Coolest guy ever , brexiteer as well!!
His breathing is weird
I like mungo but I feel like he's still trying to live his glory days. Still have the same hair style 50 years later.
Interesting, his look to me is truly unique and sets him apart from the cookie cutter musicians put out now. I would love to know what his DNA shows, truly unique.
bad teeth were fashionable back then
I love your music, my personal favourite was baby jump 😍
such a legend so sad he died en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Dorset
