0825 EEST As a child I read the memoirs of a chap Who Flew One of These in WWII. He Claimed the flight manual said that the characteristics were SO poor, that if the engine stopped, you should bail-out (if high enough) ... OR 'Whistle A Tune and Kiss Yer Ass Goodbye '!
They weren't so bad when in service. These planes sit around alot. I believe it takes a little bit now to purge the air from the fuel system when they sit. Also, these engines are incredibly expensive now. And they must be rebuilt and inspected ever so many hours. So I believe the owners are not necessarily tuning for max power but for longevity. They are not quite as snappy with the lower grade fuel today either. In short, like everything else, it's about the money now instead of being the best.
These souped up engines were not good at idle, they made horsepower at a there max revs. A great looking warbird, shame really. these hot rod beautiful aircraft were built to kill but necessity is the mother of invention..
+brian critchley Definitely NOT a shame, really. They were built to kill the military of a dictatorial and authoritarian regime that believed their leader was divine (as in a God) and others were subhuman, and whose war crimes at least equaled - if not exceeded - the Nazis and have never been properly held accountable for heinous atrocities. You're one of the fools and lemmings who believe that the U.S. and the rest of the world were so unfair and vindictive to the Japanese that they had no choice but to launch WW2 in the Pacific. And of course you have no clue that this regime invaded and occupied Mongolian China in 1931 for ten years prior to Pearl Harbor.
The most beautiful aircraft ever built.
Damn what a sound and beautiful bird!
These engines were hot! Listen to the lift and duration of that cam!
Nothing but pure power.
