Great review! This Bombardier Zefiro platform was designed by Bombardier Transportation for the China Rail (CR), which operates all high-speed railway networks in China, and that's why this platform has such a crazy top speed. However, it is just a theoretical speed, and even China is not really operating their fleets at such a high speed as it has been proved unprofitable.
As Bombardier Transportation has been acquired by Alstom, Zefiro has been purchased by Hitachi Rail Europe As Bombardier Transportation has been acquired by Alstom, Zefiro has been purchased by Hitachi Rail Europe. Even though this platform is not as perfect as Siemen's artwork, at least Zefiro is quite new and it can be made in Italy, so Italian operators choose them.
@@mano_max_sakuragi I wish for the same, but Hitachi Europe is yet to be a railway giant, which makes them have insufficient investment to make the platform even better.
I do have traveled from Bejing to Xian at speed far above 300 Km/h, up to 350. Profitability of very hight top speed depends basically on distance between stops.
@@acde9355 the problem is that it's being made by Hitachi's Pistoia plant, which was originally the dreaded AnsaldoBreda. And many new trains (the regional Rock and Blues are being made here) are gonna suffer the curse of AnsaldoBreda.
I traveled from Milano to Roma and back several times. In spite of all the extolling commercials of the Frecciarossa (Italian pronunciation is different from yours), I think you are completely right.
Really surprised by your ride quality comment. According to some SNCF drivers I've had the chance to talk to, and who have been running ETR400 approval trials on French tracks in late 2021, they all agreed the ETR400 have excellent damping and smooth ride quality (for a high speed train with conventional bogies). Maybe it was a problem specific to this very trainset/coach?... as for leather seats, can't agree more, i despise those especially on long distances
As I said in another comment, this review is a scam. I've taken Italo AGV (as this guy recommends) many times, between Milan and Rome/Napoli, even on a roundtrip on the same day, which made me compare both trains. Italo was bumpy, shaky and noisy while Frecciarossa was totally smooth (I mean this was at the same speed of 300 km/h). This guy wanted to get some clicks by just criticizing an excellent product that he wishes he could have in his home country...
@@jacopomainoldi9025 He maybe got unlucky with a defective train, you cannot really predict if that train runs fine or not, possibly that unit was probably scheduled for maintenance that got deferred, Italian railways were previously suffered corruption and vandalism (evident of the old regional trains getting tagged, some new ones do) and also rough tracks Also opinion is opinion
@@tenny_tenten Let's say vandalism is a common issue everywhere and corruption inquires are referred to more than 15 years ago. I honestly think these topics are pointless in a train review. In that case, it is also remarkable that Trenitalia is investing 6 billion € to renew 80% of its regional train fleet. The company is more solid than Renfe itself according to released financial data to make a comparison.
Think you are right about the ride quality on these trains. Hitachi product which says it all. We have trains in U.K. built by Hitachi which have ride quality issues. This was down to DfT requirements which created these issues. If you want a premium product best to opt for Siemens IMHO. Good video, much enjoyed.
Agreed, I travel on the ECML frequently and the staff are fantastic but the Azumas are bland and unexciting with harsh lighting. The Hull Trains fitout is slightly better warmer colours but still the harsh brilliant white lighting.
Last time I travelled from this station was about last December and some station cafes weren't devoid of people. Just around the day, it becomes a mess
Thank you for a great review. I agree with all that you say. The Frecciarosa 1000 units look great from the outside, but the interior is very drab. Even worse, the ride quality at speed is poor. You rightly mention the Italo units used on the route from Milan to Rome, and they are built by Alsthom, the makers of all SNCF TGVs. Consequently they ride superbly, and the Italo units clearly benefit from Alsthom’s expertise in designing suspension for very high speed trains. Many thanks.
I agree about the colours and lighting, it's something italo also struggles with, that said I found these seats reasonably comfortable and the ride quality of these sets better than the italo evos. Not really the highest bar though, the pendolinos in general alongside the Fyras have the worst ride quality of the Italian trains, the AGVs are definitely on the better end. The track quality is certainly not good on any of these sections, none of these trains run particularly smoothly, I do wonder what an ICE 3 or something with a similarly soft suspension would be like.
The train left on time and arrived early, covered 370 miles in 310 minutes, the bathroom was clean and well-stocked. And you didn't like it because you don't care for beige, the seat felt hard and the ride wasn't smooth. I am confused. It would have helped us if your camera had captured the rough ride, but things looked smooth as silk when you showed the bumpy part. You wondered if the rough ride is just part of the Frecciarossa dna, an inherent design defect. Would it seem likely to you that Italy is running its flagship high-speed trains with an inherent design flaw? Is it possible that your particular coach had some problem, which we couldn't see? I've taken that particular run and class of train several times and personally I think it looks incredibly stylish and the seat not hard but exceptionally comfortable for hours of travel and the high-speed runs have always been smooth. But as you say, maybe it's just a personal preference. Dylan, overall, do you really think your experience deserved this headline? Just thumbing through your reader comments here I'd say that you dropped the ball on this one.
Don't know whether I agree. Reviews are supposed to be reports of subjective experiences anyway. If he was disappointed, he was disappointed, whatever the (acknowledged) good points of the train. The expression comes to mind of something being 'less than the sum of its parts' and I suppose that this may have been Dylan's perception of this.
@@geraiswaiya2347 Yes, exactly, and his viewers are equally free to express their puzzlement when his comments don't seem to make sense. Subjectivity is one thing but getting far away from your viewers is something else. I'm just suggesting that he might want to think again about what seem to be quite prissy comments. He does't like beige leather? The lights are too bright?? Who is he writing for?
probably he was paid by some other European company competing with Trenitalia to tell the false, they find no real defects he complained about the colors of the seats!
I feel you have missed the point entirely here. If you're going to have a nice, flashy train like this, then why not put nice seats and interiors in it, like on the ETR500?
I love travelling on trains in Italy and do every year , Italy and UK are different , distances much greater in Italy and Italy has chosen to concentrate on rail track and has the space to do so , it also does not have the number of budget airlines that the UK has . The UK doesn’t need dedicated HS track it needs capacity more than anything ,
also, Trenitalia announced that all Frecciagento services will be merged with Frecciarossa, all AV trains (250kph and above) will be branded as Frecciarossa, the ETR 485 will be transferred to Frecciabianca
Whenever Hitachi get involved it seems to me you end up with harsh daylight LED lighting, bland decor and terrible seats - look at the 800 series on GWR and ECML . Hull trains have made an effort to warm the decor but they still have that terrible LED 'strip' lighting. Why did they not take a lesson from the MK4 coaches or even the original Mk2 E which if I remember correctly had different setting for day and night lights.
Hitachi has nothing to do with FR 1000, as well as this train has no connection to the Class 800. It was designed by Bombardier and Ansaldo Breda way before the later was acquired by Hitachi. Actually it belongs to Bombardier's Zefiro platform, which was now bought by Hitachi as Bombardier joined Alstom.
@@markoobid2005 Sorry I maybe was not clear, I was not sugesting any train design connection at all, just a tongue in cheek comment about outcomes for passengers, in terms of cabin smbiance, where Hitachi becomes involed, at any level. This Video sums up what many people think of the FR1000, it's sure Fast and VERY Powerful, but it has lackluster ride quality, and the Seats are not good, they are regional Service Level... The problem is that the FR1000 is much Narrower and Shorter than the Old but still Gold ETR500 (Not a real ETR, but ok), which is huge, because it is derived by the UIC-Z Coaches, so much so that the Old ETR500 "Monotensione" have been converted to Intercity services with the UIC-Z Coaches. Having travelled on all the services that Trenitalia and Italo both serve, the FR1000 (ETR400) Is actually the worst. More over, this trains aren't Italian really, the last real Italian Train is actually the ETR500 built by the TREVI (TREno Veloce Italiano) Consortium, constituted by the defunct Ansaldo, Breda (Yes, once upon a time they were different companies) and Fiat Ferroviaria, at least mainly, they were built like tanks, and maintenance is very easy even 30 years later, I Really Hope they keep them in service for at least 10 more years

Wasn't that bad but the prices for Frecciarossa are crazy sometimes. For example our train from Naples to Rome in pretty nice double decker trains was 4x cheaper that the same train in Freciarossa economy. :(
This title was just to catch some more viewers, since nothing seems to be "disappointing". Plus I could say Italo AGV trains are instead more uncomfortable when it comes to the ride quality (not to mention the inexistent Wi-Fi). Some passengers should ride their car (if they have one) and just stick with it in order to not complain this much about an efficient service. Let's mention the fact that it was on time, the prices are generally cheaper than European competitors on a similar journey and also clean, and it seems clear the "disappointment" is only having annoying passengers on board.
Buongiorno Eli. Love your outfit for this trip, business class type classy haha. It makes me happy you and Dylan do these trips together, nothing like a shared experience. Edit: I'll be married for 25 years later this year, and I do hope you both get to share the same milestone eventually (at least together if you both choose not to marry), with 25 years of shared experiences like this.
The train looked so sharp outside with its red livery that I thought it was going to be great inside as well. But as soon as you entered i thought it looked too bright, a factor fortunately less important once you escaped the fog and the sunlight streamed in. The beige interiors reflect too much light; I love the trains with restful dark blue interiors. The welcome drink and snack didn't seem like much, but it's just a three hour trip. It seems to me that the mixed review is fair.
The seats on those trains are TERRIBLE, almost unbearable in standard class. But the ride quality on the 1000 trains is usually very good. You must have been unlucky.
ETR1000 is completely different from ETR500. Is a train designed with a fixed number of cars (8) 4 of them with distribuite traction. You may feel some differences in ride smoothness between powered cars and unpowered cars on the same train (1, 3, 6 and 8 are powered). They have also different weights. A suspension system designed for 400kmh should be stiffier and harder than those designed for slower speeds. IMHO the ETR1000 is pure marvel and a milestone in the HST industry. Is cheap to build and maintain, is fast, reliable and has a correct mix of seat configurations. Is designed to run on a huge variety of different lines, voltages and railroads.
What a load of bollocks! I have taken this same train in the same class of travelled on the same route..nothing wrong with it..great ride, comfy and great service
Loads of hotels around Termini and it's the main economy hotel district of Rome. Those window blinds are bad news as often they cover more than one set of seats so if one person pulls it down nobody gets to see very undemocratic and most people are too polite,or scared,to ask them to pull it up.
u really just like to complain. to call this service "DISAPPOINTING" just because you didn't like the seat and interior design is inappropriate. By reading the title I expected a train that is falling apart with many issues. There are indeed many positive aspects! (clean toilets, did not seem like a bumpy ride, service in business, on time etc) Would be nice if you could also point out these more and choose not such a one-sided title.
its crazy that frecciarossa's interiors have become worse than some frecciabianca and intercity seats in the last years... (mind that my experience on both frecciarossa and intercity has only been on standard class)
The Frecciarossa 1000 high speed trains that Hitachi have built are beautiful trains. And the HS2 trains might look similar to the Frecciarossa 1000 trains.
Idiot, is build in Toscana from italy company ANSALDO with hitachi....industry italian is the 2⁰in Europe....UK only finance and corruption and riciclaggio mafie s ..
Concerning the 400 kph top speed, this isn't entirely true. The maximum service speed these trainsets are designed for is 360 kph (still bloody fast), but European railway regulations mandate an at least 10% higher than certified design speed. For example the ICE3 is designed for service speeds of 330 kph, but can achieve and run at over 360 kph (which it needed to do in order to be certified for 330 kph). For instance the Chinese version of the ICE3, which is identical in terms of technical specifications, has a regular service speed of 350 kph due to different certification regulations.
Why the extra 10%? It already seems a bit pointless to have a top speed so far in excess of the permitted speed limits. True, speed limits can change with track and signaling improvements, but even so what's the point of having that extra 60-100 kph capability if they're never allowed to use it? Acceleration perhaps?
@@sirrliv From what I've heard it's so that the trains can reliably reach their top speed even in adverse conditions, and to show that their service speed is safe by not operating on the design limit.
Your seat appeared to be plastic, not leather. From your report, the only good things about this train were the speed and the coffee, and the rest were disappointing. I'm surprised that the ride was poor on a new train!
Yes, leaving on time and arriving early was disappointing. A clean, well-stocked bathroom was also disappointing. So was the Italian coffee, the treats and the offer of a refresher on the coffee. All disappointing indeed.
their is a pretty good reason, if you have railroads which are going to be upgraded to higher speed capacity. you can over engineer your train to meet those limits and put it into service before the rail upgrades are ready. it also gives you more time to trouble shoot the new trains. before the higher speed limit comes into effect.
@@Aliceintraining It is very unlikely that any track will ever support those kinds of speeds in Italy, and even if, they will have to buy new rolling stock anyway. The actual current trend is for maximum Speeds of about 250 km/h, as this is more economical and allows for mixed usage, higher speeds require much more energy and so on. And they have allready connected their major centers, so why should they build even faster tracks to less important destinations? So I do not think that makes much sense at all.
@@arnoldhau1 not new track, but upgraded older track which would allow for the higher speeds. and the other advantage of over building your trains for performance is in acceleration which means your trains spend more time at a higher average speed. and if your train can handle 400kph, then running it at lower speeds will be far less impactful.

I'll spend a day trip in Rotterdam, NL on the 22nd on my birthday before heading off to England. I'll travel 1st class to Rottefdam thanks to you! Great video kerp up the excellent work. Your No. 1 fan from NYC ha ha ha Tony NYC/USA!
Thanks, I'm doing well. Hope you're well 😁
😂 Never better.
How much would it cost to fly in comparison?
You should take one of ÖBB's EC trains! From Munich to Rimini for example
I happened to see another review of the FrecciaRossa 1000 yesterday on the youtube channel "Aiguillages" (it's a French speaking channel). He did travel in France though from Paris to Lyon, so on the French high speed infrastructure and he was pretty enthousiastic about the train.
Yes, its just Dylan that is a hypocrite
@@ZRHTrainspotter what is your problem ? Do you just get aggressive with anyone that disagrees with you? it's disappointing that there's people like you in the train fandom.

That's a pity! Everything else I've seen about these trains has been so positive. Hopefully the HS2 derivative can be made a bit nicer.
HS2 would make more sense if it allowed trains from Scotland/Birmingham to go to Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Geneva and Frankfurt by changing direction at St Pancras. By using Euston the whole thing becomes very expensive and futile.

Question. When booking does the schedule indicate the type of train?
Thought the ride was very smooth when we were on the LGV Sud-Est travelling between Paris and Turin on the Mille. Appreciate the interior isn't for everyone - seem to recall Man in Seat 61 making similar remarks in his guide to high speed rail in Italy.
Didn't seem so bad to me - wish the USA had a train like this!

I hope the Hitachi can make the Zefiro platform even better like the SHINKANSEN.

Yea that is really wierd, i traveled a lot with the ETR400 and the ride quality was always amazing.
He just unlucky that he travelling on the defective suspension train.
Seats are OK on the standard class.
But the leather seats is looks great.
@@jacopomainoldi9025 He maybe got unlucky with a defective train, you cannot really predict if that train runs fine or not, possibly that unit was probably scheduled for maintenance that got deferred, Italian railways were previously suffered corruption and vandalism (evident of the old regional trains getting tagged, some new ones do) and also rough tracks
Also opinion is opinion

About 2 or 3 weeks I went to York from Grantham I went on lner class 800 azuma and all the staff are really lovely
The 1970s called and want their decor back!

Great trip. I'm curious, who manufacturing the seat at ETR 1000? Is that part of Bombardier or Hitachi?
On my opinion, the seats are very comfy, but the etr500 have even more comfy seats
Just one quick question: In the UK do you have already a dedicated High-speed track train service? Just wondering.......
I feel you have missed the point entirely here. If you're going to have a nice, flashy train like this, then why not put nice seats and interiors in it, like on the ETR500?
@@DylansTravelReports I agree with you. Also for that @#$%wit Claudio: every km of HS1 is dedicated to Eurostar and Southeastern high speed trains.
Wow they all look the same..the color of the seats and the price is the only noticeable for me…thanks for the video very informative for me.
Little price for 400 km/h

Lol, if you say so
Buongiorno Eli.
I think the reason you’re ride was bumpy was that particular unit
Possibly
Is designed to run on a huge variety of different lines, voltages and railroads.
thank you

@@alessandrom7181 I was referring to the expectations/opinions of the TH-camr who’s channel this is
Concerning the 400 kph top speed, this isn't entirely true.
@@sirrliv
From what I've heard it's so that the trains can reliably reach their top speed even in adverse conditions, and to show that their service speed is safe by not operating on the design limit.

I definitely prefer the new frecciarossa 1000 over the old 500. I personally haven't noticed those problems you mentioned. In my opinion bye
Why would you design a train for a much higher speed than required? Seems like a huge waste of money to me.
their is a pretty good reason, if you have railroads which are going to be upgraded to higher speed capacity. you can over engineer your train to meet those limits and put it into service before the rail upgrades are ready. it also gives you more time to trouble shoot the new trains. before the higher speed limit comes into effect.
they wanted to operate at 360km/h I think but the transport ministry refused due to flying ballast risks etc.
I also prefer ETR500
You should've seen the reaction I had to find out the top speed they can go up to. lol
