- The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor is an American single-seat, twin-engine, all-weather stealth tactical fighter aircraft developed for the United States Air Force. The result of the USAF's Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program, the aircraft was designed as an air superiority fighter, but also has ground attack, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence capabilities. The prime contractor, Lockheed Martin, built most of the F-22's airframe and weapons systems and conducted final assembly, while Boeing provided the wings, aft fuselage, avionics integration, and training systems.
The aircraft was variously designated F-22 and F/A-22 before it formally entered service in December 2005 as the F-22A. Despite its protracted development and operational difficulties, USAF considers the F-22 a critical component of its tactical airpower. The fighter's combination of stealth, aerodynamic performance, and mission systems enable unprecedented air combat capabilities.
The U.S. Air Force had originally planned to buy a total of 750 ATFs. In 2009, the program was cut to 187 operational aircraft due to high costs, a lack of clear air-to-air missions during production, a ban on exports, and development of the more versatile F-35, with the last F-22 delivered in 2012.

I seen 2 F-22's in 1999 . When the US was claiming there was only one built. I live close to Arnold Air Force Base. And it's been a pleasure to see some of the Wild Things fly over.

The F22 is strictly a stealth fighter. By far in every way the absolute best fighter in the world. The f22 works as the spearhead making air superiority it's own. Once the F22 does it's job, the f35 moves in. The f35 is a superior bomber, fighter, and ground support tool. It's also cheaper than the f22, but when it comes to air to air, nothing beats the f22. And that's why the F22 will remain an American fighter only. The f22 is the only fighter that can defeat the f35. So allies get the f35 (An amazing fighter) and the USA keeps the ace card.

We can’t even get a hardware device to react the CD-ROMs from1989 and if we did the software company is out of business and will cost millions of dollars to convert 25% of the tooling and production design document data to something useful for CATIA, the current generation for 3D CAD/CAM. You should be glad you don’t make a living in supporting legacy designed aircraft. You’d starve to dead. LOL

Not offering the Raptor to close allies like Japan was a mistake imo. The other big mistake was stopping production at just 187 airframes when around 280-300 would have been more of an ideal sweet spot.

@@oneoff217, Heya, can't say I'm a NSC 68 scholar, but my understanding is that it outlined the military changes and spending needed to counter the threat of the 2 communist powers in the world at the time. This doesn't seem like a 'power grab' to me, but the US government taking preparatory steps with it's allies, which in hindsight seems to have bore fruit. Korea was a proxy war, as you know, and it's a shame that the people of the Korean peninsula had to bear the brunt of pushing back communist aggression, but I think most in SKorea today would say they are glad to be living in a free prosperous society. But as soon Mig21 was heading back it took damage from the dogfight and due to technical problems, which is very common in Mig21s it crashed itself.... The F-16 pilot was beaten till death by their own people... They think that he was Indian pilot... They took him to hospital and he dies and Pakistan officials says in their statement that Two Fighter jets was taken down According to them.,One pilot was in hospital which was supposed to be the Pakistani one actually and the other one was mig 21 commander according to them, Soon Pakistani officials changed their statement from Two Indian pilot to only one captured.... So hence proved they banned media from entering there and also Buy F-16 fighter jets the very next day from Jordan

An F22 could target and engage an S-500 at over 100 miles, but the S-500 wouldn't be able to track the F-22's low radar cross section until it was just a couple dozen miles away.
s-500 is meant to be a defence against high altitude incoming missiles mostly ICBMs they are not meant be a defence against enemy airplanes asshole

Realistically the MIG can't compete with the f22 for some key reason. One being the MIG has no missiles that can compete with the distance of the F22. The F22 can lock on and shoot down a MIG without ever needing any visual confirmation of the target. The MIG heavily relies on the pilot's abilities (which are undoubtedly high) to make up for the old, outdated technology. Back in 2002 I believe it was, India "beat America" in a mock dog fight except they didn't in some ways. First off America only used F-15 against the MIG's which even then were not the best we had. Also, we agreed to not use our advanced radar systems. We also agreed to a 3 to 1 handicap for the MIG's Meaning we used 6 F-15s and India used 18 MIGs. Then we also agreed to not use any advanced long ranged missiles as India could not match the technology. It was meant to be only a Dog Fight simulation with by skill only and yes India "won" with an 18 to 6 advantage, but one on one an F22 will knock a MIG out of the sky before the MIG ever knows what's happening. On top of this America has even more advanced planes know like the F35 and more advanced weapons systems, while India 17 years after that exercise is still using the same old MIG's. @@prasanmishra4216 Yes but that was with Pakistani radar and missile systems. America does not sell ANY of our radar or long range air to air missiles. The American Raytheon AIM-120D AMRAAM has a 160km lock-on distance. The longest range Indian Airforce Air to Air missile is the Astra missile. It is most accurate at 80km, but in perfect condition can possibly shoot up to 130. Meaning its high accuracy target range is half of American AMRAAM missile. I am only stating facts here, We can lock on and shoot a MIG down at the slow speed they move nearly 80km before the Indian Airforce MIG ever knows what hit them. You can't shoot down what you can't see or lock onto. This has NOTHING to do with Indian skill as the pilots are undoubtedly highly trained, but India has a vast technology gap in military equipment. On top of that, an F22 is a STEALTH FIGHTER, they likely could not even lock onto it in a "dog fight" at all. It's why not a single f22 has EVER BEEN SHOT DOWN. No country has the technology to shoot one down right now, not even America. That will catch up though, but again there is no other weapons industry like America. Like I said our radar and Air to air missiles would allow for an f-16, f22, f-35, etc to shoot down a MIG with the MIG pilot ever seeing the F-16. Also "fighting" is more than just Airpower, even before the military many Americans grow up regularly shooting guns. As a child, I got my first 4-10 shotgun at 6, but the time I was 16 I had 6 or 7 shotguns/hunting rifles and 1 Beretta M9 handgun. Culturally we are different in the way. America is also the most armed western country in the world, it's not even close really.

Not really. A single YF-23 can easily destroy a squadron of your F-22s.
