The fact is that the connotations of a colour are almost purely contextual: in a hospital setting blue is a good colour because it is associated with cleanliness, relaxation and quiet, but the exact same colour of blue would be a terrible choice for food because it has a connotation of mould or rot. So in this case, knowing that it is a hospital corridor immediately makes it look like a set piece for a horror movie than the navigation lines you find in hospital corridors. Almost any other colour (except brown or yellow for connotations or other bodily excretions) would have been a much better choice.
Well, I'd say yellow and brown would still be better. Urine and feces are gross but it's a better thought than the idea that you were strolled into a murder scene and that you are probably next.
@@Shugunou at least in a children's hospital you could jokingly say it was one of the patients (for obvious reasons, it'd be better to tease a child who has control over their bodily functions, should you be teasing a child about it in this hypothetical)
Actual color theorists would strongly agree with the blood trail impression, because context is a huge part of meaning. Decades of ongoing research by psychologists, neurologists, sociologists and anthropologists cannot be replaced by reading one internet chart, but some people act like that
The thing about it is that it wasn't *just* the colour, it was the pattern. If they'd used the exact same colour but just in a geometric stripe along the floor, it would have just looked like a geometric stripe. But because they decided they wanted to make it look like some exciting artistic paintbrush stroke, that made it look *organic*, that made it look like a corpse had been dragged across it.
I love to think that every kid that walks into that hospital is given a copy of Sean Adam's "The Designers Dictionary of Color". Y'know, so that they don't freak out.
The first trial day has one of the witnesses arguing with the Judge about odd and even numbers, wasting the court's time, and on the second day the true culprit adamantly convinces everyone that the red splatters on his hospital floor are actually just "color theory" and "Wright's defendant was the *real* murderer actually"
Edgeworth is actually the guy who decided painting the floors with red paint trails would be a good idea and is just trying to desperately convince people it wasn't a mistake
Agjdhklfdhj I know I know, I made this only having played the first game, but I thought godot was hot and I liked the way he talks so I thought he would be fitting. I didn't realize the irony until after I made it.
*"This is honestly a perfect summation of the critical thinking skills of this courthouse."* absolutely slayed me. You can literally use that line without context for any silly moment in this series, and it would make sense.
And what they are talking about isn't even colour theory... colour theory is about making colours, how you mix them to get different colours, what colours compliment each other, how to use colours to make stuff look nice, etc. Not what feelings a colour could represent. That is dependent on the person. In my opinion, red is either blood, or really strong and intense emotions. Sometimes both. And also, real things are red just coz that's how they reflect and absorb the light. Like mammalian blood. It's only in art and literature that the meanings of colour has any real effect (BTW, art can mean design). In this case, it looks like the childrens hospital were going for arteries or something, and it ended up looking like someone dragged a bloody corpse into and out of a room.
“Your honor, I may have murdered that man, but simply because his blood was red I was spreading love and passion instead of death and murder because the color red correlates with these positive factors.”
Wild that there's people who don't know about the color theory post. To those who are free from tumblr, I want you all to know this is a meme now. Whenever there's a picture of red on white, or like literally blood in the snow, people immediately comment "this would look good in a children's hospital!" on it. We won't let it die.
you all are my heroes- thank your for keeping the meme alive at least long enough for me to finally find it... i get really upset when i see color "psychology" masquerading as color theory.
The funny thing is, children's hospitals often have color coded hallways--so there might be an orange, a yellow, a green, etc etc hallways in this pattern but different colors. I'm sure some higher-up approved the design + color choices as a whole and didn't stop to think that Red Hallway would have...a rather different feel than the other hallways. xD (Note: this isn't true for all children's hospitals, just the handful I've been in / worked at.)
At my local children's hospital, the hallways are referred to by a letter, and then the on the doorway leading to the hallway the letter is next to an animal starting with said letter (hallway d is a dog, hallway e is an elephant, ect.). But they are also unique colors. I guess they really wanted to make sure you don't mix them up (and pander to kids)
@@spongecakes1986 That's cute, I like that a lot!! And yes, anything cute or appealing kinda gets co opted by the kids hospitals / wings. Anything to make the experience even a little less frightening for the little ones ❤️
One of the first things I learned on the psychology of color is that colors like blue, green and white are used in hospitals because they are relaxing and they can make the color of blood less impactful and it can also refresh the doctor’s vision after a long operation. Using the color red as the trail was a horrendous decision all around
The absolute funniest shit about this is that color theory is not at all about meanings of colors, it’s about how they blend and go together. They dunning krugered themselves so hard that they straight up believed that nobody had considered “red is not always blood.”
Seeing the op mention they made the thing before playing the 3rd game made me feel happy bc AA characters are really simple to apply on memes and work even without much context other than (other) memes.
Honestly, I mostly know godot from the "your fave is unfuckable" squabble on Tumblr that lasted for like a week and then I just started really liking him bc he's weird
The best part is how condescendingly superior they sound describing color theory without the context that any red in hospitals makes people and kids severely uncomfortable.
Fun fact: Red is never used in plane interiors because, with red being the color of passion and intensity, it accentuates any feelings the passengers may have. This is a problem, because oftentimes new airplane riders are scared of crashing, and red would only accentuate that fear, especially in the event of an actual crash. A similar thing happens in hospitals, especially children’s, where patients are usually afraid of operations, checkups or other hoptal stuff. This is why both use blue, the color of peace and tranquility, reducing fear and making it easier to get rid of panic.
I love how anything red on tumblr nowadays gets made fun of and there's always a post that says "Ah yes! Perfect for a children's hospital!" whenever there's red in a picture with negative connotations. XD
If we’re gonna delve into color language, then baby blue or pastel teal would probably work best. They’re associated with childhood, calmness, and a soothing color overall which is why you see them on a lot of children’s clothing and toys. Red in this type of environment in general is a terrible option since it’s such a strong, aggravating color. Sure, love, lust, and passion are all great traits but do you want to be evoking those feelings in a *hosptial* of all things? And a children’s, no less?
Here's the og post with most of the content in the vid. You're bound to find branching paths w Tumblr reblogs, so the end is a bit different mosticonicposts.tumblr.com/post/618030815205572608
i feel like this video/thread is a funny example of how you can over-analyze a topic to the point where you drain it of all impact and enjoyment because to most regular people taking a quick glance instinctually it just looks like somebody dragged a body across the floor and is a strange color choice in general for a HOSPITAL yet SOMEONE just HAD to bring up the color wheel infographic.
"This is a children's HOSPITAL why does it look like there's BLOOD EVERYWHERE" "It's not abt blood. Red is the color of love, lust, and passion" "Love, lust and passion" at a *children's* hospital?... Suddenly, I prefer the first interpretation a lot more...

I just realized the original post never talked about how streaky the line of red was on the floor. I’m sure if it was just a red line that was straight then the assumption that it looks like blood would be negated. Wtf was the designer thinking when they made it look nonlinear?
What the hell were they fighting for, its only logical red + hospital floor isnt a good combination, especially when that red looks like a trail. Like, in a hospital setting, red = blood, it can be interpreted as something else in another context but this is a hospital context, where red = your literal insides
It's Tumblr, a safe space for people with no social skills to be together and support each other. Us mortal men are not meant to understand the purpose of going all out sperg over colour theory because someone had a problem with decorators making a bad decision in a children's hospital. Just leave them to their own devices, it probably makes sense to them so they'll figure it out... somehow.
@@neroblack2704 basically some said jokingly "if anyone ever pulls a gun on you just put your finger in the shooty part (that's a direct quote I think) and the finger will stop the bullet." Someone brings factual evidence then the other side says "no it would stop the bullet look it up."
Ya know the internet is on so many layers of irony right now I can't tell if it's a joke everyone is in on or if someone on the "finger stops bullet" side genuinely believe this is a valid way to stop a bullet.
What gets me is that the red paths would have been fine if they'd gotten rid of the streaky edges. Make them straight paths or whimsical wiggles or something, not a shape that immediately invokes something being dragged across the floor!

Oh, this reminds me of an irl college debate I had years ago. Over that past summer I had gone to an art museum, and there was a limited time exhibit of the work of a comic book artist from the 50s (note: I don't actually remember who it was or when they were active, or even if they're dead, it was a while ago.) But the thing is, this artist also had a side venture that was also featured in this exhibit, which were of...unclothed busty women in explicit situations. One of which was identical twins with an elephant seal btw. Anyway, the exhibit had some of the art pieces displayed in the hall outside for all ages, but the rest were behind an age gate. Thing is, a lot of the explicit pictures were in the all ages area, and a lot of the comic book stuff was in the adult area. Anyway I mentioned how I thought this was backwards, and a guy I was talking to started railing against the idea that I was daring to censor the artists vision. I wasn't even saying that, I just said it was a weird layout.
@@emblemblade9245 Yeah and also art tends to get into museums because it was sold to them. So while the artist could make suggestions on how he'd like the work displayed, he has no say over how the museum was physically built in the first place, or how people will use what he sold.
@@CrocvsGator also unless you are the government and stop smth from seeing the light of day, you literally can't censor things. Words mean things and censorship is only when the government is doing it via punishment and legal backing and not when its smth actually illegal (you cant censor child porn the same way stopping an assault isn't an infringement on personal freedom)
@@DimT670 I'm kind of confused by what you're saying, those last two things are illegal in multiple countries, including refusing to stop an assault, but also, there is a misconception that only the state can mandate censorship, strictly from an etymological point of view. Historically the Church has been able to do so, and there are cases such as William Hearst refusing his Newspapers to print information about Citizen Kane, and self censorship is indeed a thing, as are households who edit offensive material.

Surely green would be a better colour for a children's hospital? The colour green implies creativity, freshness harmony and most importantly, rejuvenation (the action or process of giving new energy or vigour to something.) green is also a colour associated with healing and nature and both of these aspects would seem like much more soothing and appropriate aspects to apply to a hospital for children than vibrancy, determination and ambition.
Green would probably be okay for a children's ward if it was paired in tandem with another color. Like, a bright purple could give a fun, almost Nickelodeon kind of feel. Or an orange. But yeah, green has strong connotations with disease and contagion. A sky blue might be a good middle ground between fun, calming, and clean, maybe?
For my Grade 12 drama class we had to make a warm-up game as an assignment. I came up with an improv game that utilized colour psychology and the new LED spotlights that had just been installed in the drama room. The game had it so a random colour would be applied to the lights, and the people on stage had a make a short improvised scene based on what they associated the light colour with. However, they would not know what the other people on stage associated it with until the scene started. It was pretty interesting seeing what people came up. For example, with the colour blue, one person acted sad, one acted like they were fishing, and another acted like they _were_ a fish. All in the same scene. It was hysterical. That’s just one example. …It was also one of the class’s favourites of all the games we came up with for the assignment, which is a big honor for me. And I was horrendously late in submitting it, too, so we did the game, like, three months after the assignment was supposed to be completed. I still got a high mark for it though, so it worked out. TL;DR: There are common associations with colours but not everyone will immediately think of the same thing first. I think of blood when I see that trail first thing. I’ll associate it with love and passion and health if it’s in the shape of a heart or a cross. Not a wavy line.

* Tumblr color theorists

The funny thing is, children's hospitals often have color coded hallways--so there might be an orange, a yellow, a green, etc etc hallways in this pattern but different colors. @@MarcoAdventures is this a strange joke or a funny misspelling of "morgue"?

The best part is how condescendingly superior they sound describing color theory without the context that any red in hospitals makes people and kids severely uncomfortable.
And describing red as symbolizing "lust and passion" in the context pf a children's hospital, no less
Tumblr is like that
Fun fact: Red is never used in plane interiors because, with red being the color of passion and intensity, it accentuates any feelings the passengers may have.

That sounds like a pain in the ass on both accounts
@@emblemblade9245 Yeah and also art tends to get into museums because it was sold to them. So while the artist could make suggestions on how he'd like the work displayed, he has no say over how the museum was physically built in the first place, or how people will use what he sold.
@@CrocvsGator also unless you are the government and stop smth from seeing the light of day, you literally can't censor things. @@DimT670 I'm kind of confused by what you're saying, those last two things are illegal in multiple countries, including refusing to stop an assault, but also, there is a misconception that only the state can mandate censorship, strictly from an etymological point of view.
Green in a hospital though also can be associated with disease and sickness.
Damn, guess I’ve got love, lust and passion trailing out of the bodies out back
For my Grade 12 drama class we had to make a warm-up game as an assignment.
