WOW! im so glad he did this. My first thought when hearing the orginal was that peter gabriel would have made this song epic and he goes and does it. Im speechless
I'm having a terrible week, and I heard this song on the radio on my way home tonight...it made me feel so much better. One of the most inspired covers I've heard in a long long time. Thanks PG.
This makes me happy because I love this song and I love Peter!! Also i love that he is aware of this song and how his name being in the song make no sense what-so-ever :)
I remember hearing this for the first time in 08 on the Hipster Runoff show on Sirius XM's indie station. I loved it so hard but time let me forget about it. I just tripped down a TH-cam rabbit hole and stumbled onto the song again, and I couldn't be happier! Cheers, this cover can make anyone smile.
Wow, Peter Gabriel actually covering this song. That's cool. When I first heard this song on an Olan Rogers video, I was excited because I love Peter gabriel. But I didn't know who the artist was for a long time.
PG put his stamp on this. You must remember that the band Vampire Weekend makes the music in a more traditional Afropop sound. PG likes molding both the old and the new together. I like both versions but I must say the original is my favorite. I have always been a fan of Peter Gabriel.
Does not strike me as odd. Because I am also a black college student and i listen to bands like Vampire Weekend, Ra Ra Riot, Passion Pit, Kings Of Leon, Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear and the list goes on. Its just good music. You should listen to whatever music you enjoy because music has no color.
I love both versions of this song. Why compare them? I mean, do I prefer steak or pizza? Crosswords or Sudoku? Trains or ferries? Koalas or wombats? Syphillus or hepatitis?
I fell immediately in love with VW the first time I listened to them coz they're heavily influenced by African music. The very moment I heard the guitar in the very first song I listened to I was like, "Holy shit!" This sounds like home!". Home being *somewhere in East Africa*. VW's guitar-playing is just so East African-sounding it's not even funny...
@youngchaser89 THANKYOU ! i totally agree i hate this idea of people saying people of a certain social status/ ethnicity can't listen or produce music that isn't natrual to them like it's illegal to mix music cultures together , i find the music is more diverse if you do that but for some reason people want to complain !
They're not generic at all, what they do is totally original: mixing indie rock with afro-pop and some reggae. Like seriously generic? Hipster kids? Well I guess they're kind of hipsters but how can you say they're generic hipsters? It's that an oxymoron/contradiction? I Think Ur A Contra.
@levipl Nah not to me and ive been a Gorillaz fan since 2001 haha but big ups to Peter Gabriel ive also adored his music since I was a kid and heard red rain for the first time
@parkourzeus I agree with you I became a fan after I heard Aha Shake Heartbreak now I got all there albums. They like trying new stuff which is what i like about them, im not saying I didnt like Only By The Night, its just the people who say there fans and only heard one song from them. I love the newest one though, Come Around Sundown
@TheDivineAberration awww you are so cute! Making assumptions about people you don't know on the internet...Don't worry, I'm 100% African. I do know where I'm from, seeing as I was born there and live there. I just didn't feel like giving out details about my personal life on youtube, is all.

Art collapsing on itself in a beautiful way
Peter Gabriel sang this BECAUSE he is mentioned in the lyrics. That's the point.
And because the son of the owner of XL records goes to the same school as Gabriel's kids, let's not forget about that
