Thiamine deficiency is a big factor as well. I have Wernicke Korsakoff and I ended up in a wheelchair and with brain damage. Fortunately, with thiamine in big doses while in detox, and not drinking and hard work in pt, I have regained walking but I am left with the memory issues and such, and some neuropathy.

I know a guy who has been diagnosed with this. He won’t quit drinking. He keeps looping himself when he talks to my husband on the phone. His priorities are beer and cigarettes. He also has COPD and isn’t in good shape with that. He doesn’t have much time left. He’s had several chances to stay sober after getting out of detox but just wouldn’t do it.

Saw this happen with my dad. Sad and frustrating. He was so sharp the majority of his life.

When I moved into a new place there was a guy about 60 who was real friendly. Then he told me he was an alcoholic. He went on to tell me stories about getting robbed in the building; his mother came over and said that her son had made it all up. He died a couple of months later.

I believe my mother in law has an alcoholic dementia possibly aggravating an Alzheimer’s as well since she doesn’t visually recognize her own son. She drinks a lot everyday. I believe the only time she was better before she learned to go Ralph’s by herself. At that time her nutrition and vitamin intake was better but currently it’s worse. She refuses any cook protein rich foods I give her.
Her CT scan already show brain shrinkage.
Knowing her, she will refuse any medical treatment, medication etc

Can this happen with excess beer drinking? I have a friend who drinks beer every day, at least a 12 pack a day and I don’t think their brain is working well..

One of the main ingredients in beer is alcohol.

Yes, my brother's drug of choice is beer, a 12-pack a day. We're in the process of diagnosis but I expect to hear Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. He turns 64 this year and has been an alcoholic his whole life.
