  • Have you ever wondered how a short barrel performs? I have three rifles in .30-06 and they all have varying barrel lengths; 60cm, 55cm, and 50cm. In this video I wanted to test this with the RWS HIT hunting ammo, which is my go to hunting ammo to see how it performs
    Check out the RWS HIT ammo here: rws-munition.d...

    Great video, went as expected! Tbh I prefer the 308 in shorter barrels. A comparison with the RWS Short Rifle ammo would be interesting!

      Great suggestion! I'll see if I can get hold of some RWS short barrel ammo

    Nice video - snyggt filmat as we say in Sweden!
    I think it would have been even more informative if you added a graphic slide with average velocity vs. barrel length, what speed per centimeters your test showed etc. and what increase you saw from “freebore boost” with the suppressor etc.
    Keep up the good work! 🇸🇪👍🏼

      Thanks for the feedback! That is a great idea. Helps to make the numbers stick. I did a blog post on this (you can check it in the bio) but I will definitely keep it in mind for future videos! Thanks again for the comment 🙏🏻🇸🇪

      I'm Australian (metric) and I hate metric for firearms. Especially thinking about m/s and ft/s. I didn't come here to do conversions in my head.

    Up here in Canada there is a craze on short barrles, with 16" barrels (400mm) pretty common on 308. Today I saw an add for a company that is importing Remington 700 in 308 in a 12.5" barrel on long range chassis. I have no idea why. Presumably not field shooters who have ever been near a gun going off when they were not using ear defenders.

    The 20" barrel (500mm) has a lower speed then my 18" barrelled (450 mm) 308.
    I would like to see a comarison between the 308 and the 30-06 in 20" barrels using the same ammo (same bullet from same manufacturer). I believe the 308 will be marginally faster.

    Do you have 308s you could test and compare the 2 rounds side by side.

    Love the channel, just subscribed. I am buying a 30-06, in either an 18.5in (47cm) or 22in (56cm) .... maybe I should chronograph them as you did. Maybe I should consider a 24-26in (61cm-66cm) barrel. How drastic were your changes? Thompson Center offers the 30-06 in a 28in (72cm) barrel in there break action Encore Pro Hunter Rifle, after maket Barrels for that System have been offered as long as 79cm, particularly in the Magnum offerings that will beat the advertised on box ballistics by (in some cases) 150fps i.e 45-46 M/ps. Personally i am a fan of the shorter barreled bolt actions, havent noticed a difference on game, but my i have gotten 3546 fps with my 8mm Remington Magnum with 160gr bullets, 3296 fps with 200gr bullets and 2939 fps with 250gr bullets. The barrel length on my 8mm Remington Magnum Barrel is 29 inches with a full bull barrel. I highly recommend Match Grade Machine for T/C Encore Pro Hunter Rifle and Pistol Barrels. I also have a 27 inch 22-250 barrel that shoots EXTREMELY amazingly, all my barrels except 1 are 2.5cm or less at 100m and about 8cm at 300m or less, the 22-250 is about 1cm at 100m and 6cm at 300m. That was from the bench, 5 shot groups with a rear bag. Sorry for getting a little off topic and being so long winded, love the bolt guns, especially the converted Mauser

      Thanks a lot man! Appreciate the support. This is a tricky question and it all depends on what you are going to hunt. Is it long range hunting where you need those extra fps? If so then a longer barrel is preferred. Having said that, RWS have made short barrel ammo which allows the same performance at 50cm barrel as standard ammo will have at 60cm. This is evolving in front of our eyes.

      To be honest you truly are at diminishing returns at less than 20 inches in 30-06....I would say 22 inches is the do all length for 30-06

    I shortened my bolt-action 30.06 for convenience on my property. I don't own enough land to really 'need' to shoot far, so a smaller 'brush gun' setup is more convenient without really costing me anything at the distances I shoot. I like it.

    Why didn't you post your results. We didn't learn anything. The ought 6 loses an average of 30' per 2nd per inch of barrel.

    • @jackofalltrades7822

      It’s more like 25’ per/sec which is about the same as a 308. So what is your point?

      Yes, the rifle i started hunting with when I was about 11 is a remington 700 bdl chambered in 30-06. I recently started handloading and that old rifle is making its way closer to the front of my safe again with how versatile the cartridge is.

    • @ullberg1610
      @ullberg1610  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@1988aweb I feel ya man. Good way to make use of the old rifle again. I am yet to be disappointed by .30-06, which covers all of my current hunting.

    • @1988aweb
      @1988aweb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yea, put a new stock on it and cerakoted to give it a facelift because that old wood stock was getting a bit rough
