Poor Eric, he's had a substantial whack in the back and has quite a lot of damage. I was with my family as well and it was a very upsetting experience.

How awful! One moron driver, all this damage. Worse, Eric is a modern classic from a motorcar company no longer in business. I hope you get a good amount of compensation, it was not your fault.

That impact is fucking intense, there's no way he was driving at a speed even close to the 30 limit & the force generated as he hits the first car, well, to me it doesnt even look like he was concentrating enough to apply the brakes!

as sad as it to see eric like this, we have to thank him for doing his job to protect you and your family. had this driver been going any quicker or you fully stopped this could quickly be a very different situation. you should all take it easy for a bit and recover, i hope all the best for all of you

Thank god the kids didn't get badly injured, Hope they don't suffer any post traumatic stress.
Trust Boaty eh? Podgering! I ask you! That tow bar probably absorbed a bit of the impact and saved the back of the car being pushed in even further.

Berk at the back is responsible for all the damage I hope you got his insurance details. Unfortunately Eric is a right off, possibly some one like Salvage Rebuilds U.K could straighten the boot floor and front chassis legs, but it's not worthwhile and the car will still be a cat S. I hope your family haven't suffered any serious injury, although it seem like you both have a mild whiplash injury.
I hope that you're all feeling better soon & the kids soon forget about it, but that might not be the case.

Sorry this happened Paul the main thing is your family, and luckily no bad injuries. This happens all too often people not paying attention and running in to the back of a car and this has now effected 4 vehicles. If the police were there he could be charged with driving without due care. It happened to us in 2005 on our way to see family in Dorset from North Wales pulled up behind car at a roundabout in Chippenham as he pulled away we were hit from behind 3 more cars were involved luckily my towbar took the hit and it broke the bumper and dented the tailgate the cars behind were damaged back and front. The cars at the back was a family with young children and i think the couple were having a tiff and he did not realise cars were stopped, they were still having words when getting out to see the damage.
Personally I'd say the irresponsible driver deserves to be banned from driving, for life!

Unbelievable, and a real shame.
It definitely looks like you could do a reasonable job of repairing it just by pulling it out on a tree, or similar substantial object, but it depends what the insurance company do.
I've seen a lot of Rovers, with less damage than this, on Copart written off as Category Bs. They are only allowed to be broken for spares, and can't go back on the road.
Hopefully you get a decent pay out, to at least get back what it owes you.
Ah mate, I am sorry. Hopefully the damage is not too bad :( Sell Eric for parts, like I did with my Fiesta in the day. You'll probably get more money out of it that way, funnily enough.

Thankfully you've got that CCTV footage which should make the insurance process quite brisk.
Shame about Eric, but it did it's job and kept it's ocupants safe which is a valiant ending. It'll live on in other cars I'm sure!

I really feel for you. My beautiful low milage F had its door taken off by someone not paying attention, having a nightmare with my insurance company. He refused to give his details. I called the police who didnt give a fark , just said sort it with your insurance.

It's really upsetting to hear your girls in such distress and can see you are holding back some emotion. Take it easy, mate. Focus on your family for a week. We don't need content your health and family come first!!!
A crash isn't an easy thing to get over. Make sure to seek medical advice and check over. As a whip, lash can lead to many problems down the line. If you end up claiming for injuries, make a note of pain and injuries, etc. And as much evidence as possible. Take it easy, mate. RIP Eric, I will miss you :( as he is definitely a CAT S, but a lot of expert work to get him back on the road, I think!!

Sympathy to you, the family and Eric. Gutted for you 😢 I had a similar accident on the M4 in 1997. I was the second car in the queue and 4 cars rear ended us. The insurers for the guy at the back ended up footing the bill and I kept my no claims discount intact. Fingers crossed for you.
So sorry to see this Paul. You provide much merriment to many, main thing is you and your family are intact.
I would get the family checked by a doctor asap, not just for peace of mind but also to have proof if the pain you and your wife are having turns out to be something serious you can relate it to the accident.
These multi-car collisions can be a real fight between insurance companies so don't expect any payout any time soon.
Sorry to hear about this, especially for your daughters, they sounded quite upset. I have two children, aged 5 and 7, when we're out and about in my 75 and especially my Dolomite, my biggest fear is not breaking down, it's other drivers. Glad everyone is okay though, shame about poor Eric.

Seeing your own children in hysterics after something like this happens make you feel terrible, that tow bar was the saving grace , you can see how upset you are on this video, the driver will lose his license for sure , your insurance will pay out and sort compensation for you and your family
he won't unfortunately, going through a similar issue myself with a guy in an audi who overtook three cars then tried to overtkae me on a blind bend on the A5 in North wales...all the driver got was a driver awareness course ...his car had illegal umber plates illegal tints on his back lights and on his windows
Hope you and the family make a speedy recovery. What I find totally nuts with insurance in this country is that you in no way were responsible for the crash, yet for the next 5 years you have to declare a non fault claim (that will likely) impact your insurance premiums. In clear cut cases like this the entire claim should be against the driver of the white Seat and they should take the full liability and additional insurance costs etc for the next 5 years.
So sorry to hear (and see) this Captain. The most important thing is that you and the family are safe ☺️👍🤟. Think of it another way..... Eric can now provide Parts for other needy cars. Yank out that L-series and 'box and put them into something else. You'll make some money 💰💸💴💶💰💸 out of this mess yet 💰👍🛻....

Hope you're feeling okay - that was some impact to nudge all of the cars along. I've been in low speed impacts before and they're still bloody noisy. All the best.

Hope everyone is ok, that crunch stays with you for ages, it's horrible. I had an almost identical crash a few years ago at the bottom of Tottington Road in Bury, I was the 3rd car forward same as you in this one. The whole blame was put on the car at the back, didn't lose my no claims at all.
Well, that's really sad captain. Salvage of that car wouldn't be worth the cost to fix it. It's a blessing that no one was hospitalised.
Your no-claims should not take a hit - but the young fella who caused the crash will take a hit, and rightly so! That video showing the crash will be invaluable!
So sorry to see this happen to you & your family, hopefully you're all as okay as can be hoped all things considered.
I've had a lot more experience with damage to the front end of 25's than I'd like and they've all avoided any damage to their wings also.
With the L series, hopefully the oil cooler unit, which is positioned on that side of the block is okay. Mine has one of the three mounting points cracked off completely but I don't think Eric's front took enough force to do that.
With regards to repairing the damage to the front, I was able to remove the front slam panel assembly from a donor vehicle and replace the entire unit in one go, with the new crash structures in place from the donor vehicle. A decent bit of spot welding done by someone with actual welding ability though, not myself.
The front impact looked less damaging in Eric's case than in my own, so I imagine the arms underneath won't have been damaged.
Also if you wanted to dial the clock back to a pre-facelift it shouldn't be too difficult to do, having done the opposite thing whilst repairing mine. (It's the 53 plate one in red with a facelift front and the BRM seats).
Unfortunately I can't offer any advice with the back end, hopefully there isn't any significant structural distortion though.
Let me know if I can do to help keep Eric alive, even if it's just having a chat about repairing him!

@@ProjectNigel Salvage Rebuilds UK; Rob and Chris do this stuff all the time, stick it on the dozer and pull. A tie-in would be awesome but they are all the way down in Kent. Also not sure it is saveable because of the boot floor deformation, that would need proper assessment.

My God Paul that was horrific, best wishes go to your wife and kids ❤ I think you were lucky having a tow bar fitted, it took most of the impact, takes a lot to bend one of those, also Eric did his job in protecting you and your family. Looking at the damage he may be repairable in some sort of way 😢 Rest up and spend some quality time with the family. TH-cam can wait 👍

Sorry this happened! That totally sucks. Glad you're all relatively ok though. I remember being in tears like your girls when I was a dot and someone wrote my Mum's Series 1 Chrysler Alpine off! (I bloody adored that car!)
Let the insurance do the devil's work, buy him back and strip him out, tune the derv and put someone like Matt Watson behind the wheel at the Nordschleife!

Years ago I was the middle car of a similar incident and if I remember correctly my insurance claim was directed at the person who was at the back and hit the last car pushing it into the rest of us.

Watching this was pretty upsetting so I cannot imagine the distress you and your family have been through with this! I can tell your still very shook up when filming this. Eric has done he's job and shows the crash structure on a 25 is pretty robust even though it was at a lower speed. Hopefully the insurance will work out and I'm pretty sure the claims will all be against the t**t that caused this. That CCTV footage needs to go to the police, he cannot get away with this and continue driving with no consequence. That is however not important. I really hope you are all okay my thoughts are very much with you!

I've gotta say Paul, fair play to you, you're far calmer and more composed in this video than I (or probably a lot of people) could be under the circumstances. I'm glad you're all ok and the girls weren't seriously hurt. I hate to say it though, but I think you have have jinxed it, saying RovEric would outlast my Jetta last weekend!
A wee lad that lives near me just passed his test in side 2 months he had 3 Accidents and he was proud to say he was on his phone 🤬 i c this all the time with young drivers on there phones while driving. all the time😠
Sorry to hear that bad news, but thankfully you appear ok. It would be a good idea to get checked out with the Doctor in case you experience delayed injuries to your neck/back

So sorry to be hearing of this, its a truly awful thing to happen and even more so when its possibly another driver's negligence rather than a genuine accident. The main thing is that everyone was ok.
The car looks like a "fallen soldier" to me and I'd personally be questioning its viability of repair sadly due to the crumpling of the boot well.

So sorry to see this, hope you're all OK, I felt the upset of the potential nightmare scenarios running through your mind as you went through the "what ifs". I know it will be a loooong process re insurance claim(s) but please post updates when there are any. Everyone else has posted all my other thoughts so I won't repeat. Hope your Sunday (and fathers day) has been a better one for all x
Sorry to see this, awful experience, poor Eric but he did protect you. Hope you and the family are ok, get yourself checked out just in case, can be worse a few days after. Hand that film into the police, the dipstick that did this needs a ban and to sit his test again, definitely speeding and not paying attention. Hope all others involved are in as well.

Eric is dead but died on his shield protecting the family. That is all that matters. Give them all the biggest hugs and be (painfully) happy.

Ride out the next few days as best as you can and don't let the insurance company pressure you. Refuse to make any decisions until you are over the shock. When they hit you with a value, stand your ground and emphasize the replacement value. Don't take everything they tell you as fact.
Deliberate, slow deep breaths help.
It would be nice if you could bring Eric back to life and he could be but I get the other aspects as well.

Not a nice thing to happen at all. That was slightly more than a 30mph impact from the fact it has bent the tow bar up. The insurance will sort it out its a terrible thing to happen but least your all ok and not hurt to badly car's can be replaced people can't. Unfortunately this has happened to a car you like.

I've seen Insurance companies in the last few weeks total 68 plate nismo RS's etc for a tiny shunt that requires a new rear arch and bumper repaint, insurance is an absolute scam at the moment
Hopefully the dope responsible for it won't be able to afford his next insurance qt after his present policy looks after all the damage.
