Just inherited my first Sig from brother in law in law enforcment for 40 years. Hate to see him go but determined to learn everything there is to know about this weapon that he chose for me. This video was my first step on the journey and I will definitely returen to this site for more advice.
The old P229 prior to about 2011 had a 9mm standard capacity of 13 rounds. Since they standardized the frame size between the 9mm and 40/357 229, there is more room for 9mm ammo and it's now 15.
The p229 was designed for .40 s&w so it has a heavy strong wide slide. It weighs more than the p226 slide. The p229 9mm slide is similar in width to the p226 slide but about .5 inch shorter.
Very helpful review! I am considering the P 229 Elite at present and liked the weight and how it felt in my hand. But your video pointed out a few negatives to be considered as well when compared to the 226. I'll compare them both next time I am at the gun store or at the range. So thank you!
Fantastic video, my husband and I own both the Sig Sauer 229 and 226. Unfortunately the 226 is not the MK 25. Both are absolutely fantastic pistols. They are engineered and built superbly. Thank you for sharing this video 🙏
Excellent video on comparing the sake with the coat in the other sake different shapes and styles I enjoy watching these type of videos you learn a lot 👍😊
A few times a year the Sig Custom Shop runs deeply discounted packages for your Sig pistols that few people know about. Several years ago I purchased a police trade in Sig P229 in .40S&W, then waited for one of the Custom Shop discounts to happen. I sent the pistol off to Sig with Sig paying for the postage both ways. Once the pistol arrived at Sig, I had the worn out night sights replaced, a SRT and a trigger job done to the pistol, the pistol was torn down cleaned and all springs were replaced as well as any other parts the armorer deemed necessarily to replace. The barrel throat was polished and the entire pistol was ultra sound cleaned, lubed then put back together and test fired. Including the original price that I paid for my Sig and all the work that the custom shop did to it thanks to the discounts I still came out ahead saving myself several hundred dollars over the price of a brand new Sig. The pistol was shipped out on a Monday and returned to me the following Monday.
Tom Jones hi tom, I'm looking to do exactly the same thing. Would u mind telling me what u paid for the place trade in and sit trigger? Also when does sig's custom shop run these specials?!! Thanks
I was interested in this too. I just now looked at the sig site and it says "This service, valued at $225, is yours for just $144.95 and brings your used SIG SAUER pistol back to peak operational readiness."
I took advantage of this offer for my ancient P6 which was a surplus West German Police pistol. Now it runs like a new gun with night sights. The springs are lighter than the original police issue so the trigger pull is much improved. This deal is a bargain.
I've have the P229 in 9mm (thankfully without the beavertail) and installed Hogue rubber grips and XS Big Dot tritium night sights on it. It's easily the most comfortable shooting gun I own. I hope your wish comes true soon, you won't regret it!
Supreme Johnson i have the 229 carry version in 40s&w. by far my fav pistol so far but i hate to carry it due to sig not making them anymore (that i know of). switched to the p320 (striker i know) but is really nice too
Picked up a 229 SAS version, 9mm. Took a while to get comfortable with the DA/SA but I love it. The only problem I've run into is...now I want a 226. It's true, I have the Signess.
I've been keeping my eye in the P226 & P229 for a while now. I was fortunate enough to buy a lightly used P229 for a great deal. The P229 is easily the most comfortable gun I've owned to date. I really hope you get to knock the P229 off of your wish list soon it's well worth it.
Good choice on the 226/9 but have to disagree on the p238 it shoots .380 ACP so you barely feel the recoil… you may be thinking of p938 in which is the same as 238 but shoots 9mm. In that case I agree 938 is a bit snappy for a microcompact… of that size p365 is the better 9mm
The comparison should be P226 chambered in 9mm and P229 chambered in 40S&W. The P229 was derived from the P226 and originally designed to shoot 40. The P229 is a fatter more squat P226 than can shoot 40 better than any other gun IMO. The P229 chambered in 9mm is slimmer than the P229 in 40 so it feels like more similar to the P226 just shorter.
Two excellent handguns! I have a MK25 and a 229 as well. The MK25 is a sweet shooter. The trigger is not as good as my P229 (made in 1994) though. My P229 is in 40S&W and it is dead accurate.
If you are watching this video 6 years later, I can say the P226 and the P229 are the best handguns Sig makes. These things are hell and back tough and reliable. I've owned both for over 10 years.
The real difference is the 226 barrel is 4.4" and the 229 barrel is 3.9", standard barrels not extended. For conceal carry I'd go with the Gen 2 239, it's a single stack, 3.6" standard barrel and went through the custom shop to remove anything that might snag ect. I've owned a few Sigs since 87 and I must say the 239 has the best trigger of any Sig I've ever owned.
I own both and they are great pistols. However, in IWB carry, there is a big difference for me in that the 229 is easier to carry. Plus the fact that the trigger on my 229 scorpion is an SRT makes it my go to carry in 9mm.
+Rob Commorat Thank you. The 229 is quite versatile and a nice size. Though the MK25 version of the P226 is only in 9mm, the other 226 variants support the same three calibers as well. That gives you the choice in a full-size.
Not much different than g26 or g27 , 3 to 3 1/2 ounces more the 224 is with restrike capability. So it’s sig, has same round count and it’s a tad heavier . My experience is tells me the sig is a better option. K don’t get me wrong I still like and love my baby glocks but not so much with this gun available ( option number two sig 357 barrel to drop in , now your talking firepower ) in more controllable platform . Thanks for your reply.
Most folks forget about the 224 the red headed step child that is always forgotten why is that Hs ? I wonder ? They are discontinued but old stock is still being sold , it’s a must buy in my opinion. CDNN sports still have and many other vendors selling old stock released by sig . K
It is a nice little (though not so little) gun. Guns like the 224 target the pocket-carry or deep/light conceal market which has largely been taken over by a plethora of "polymer wonders" which are thinner and lighter overall.
ya , he failed to mention caliber. I have the 229 Equinox .40 cal . 12 round mag, 3.5 inch barral . I Love it! and in these reviews I don't see very many Equinox's . A two tone slide .
@@aportilla007 I've been hearing the P229 was built for .40s&w tho with thicker wider slide. Seems odd since you would think a bigger heavier gun would be more suited for it? 🤔
Doesn't seem to be a lot of differences. Even the weight is about the same. I wish they made a p229 with a polymer grip to reduce weight. I really love the way the Sig Mosquito fits in my hand. I don't own a 226 or 229 but the Mosquito just feels and weighs perfect. I'm about done with striker fired guns and I think when I make the switch I'm looking at a 229.
I currently carry the p226 mk25 style in 40s&w. When I bought it last year it was missing the top mag release side grip screw. Thats reason enough to go ahead and order new grips too I've been wanting I feel. Lol. I like the grip raised grid pattern on the 229 and wanna try to find some that is like that on the whole grip area. Reminds me of the Springfield Emissary 1911 grip pattern. I want them that brushed silver/black color too if possible. Know any possible leads on any? Was thinking LOK may or someone on ETSY for customs. I used to have the p229 no-rail that looked like my 226 but I sold it to get my railed 226. One of the only 2 guns I've ever sold. But I didn't want to miss it and like you, it just fit my mits better and plus I like a rail on some guns. This style being some. Anyhoo, appreciate the video. 🐍🇺🇸
Is the P229 you showed is chambered in 9mm or .40S&W? If it was chambered in .40S&W, would the grip be a little thinner like that of the P226 if it was chambered in 9mm instead?
This one is chambered in 9mm. I am pretty sure the frames are the same. I don't have a .40 S&W to compare to but it looks like they would both be the same thickness for the exact same gun between calibers, based upon Sig's specs. One thing that can vary from model to model is the grips themselves (they are replaceable) so a 229 Legion in one caliber and a 229 Elite in the same caliber may have different thicknesses.
Hammer Striker one more question... how does the grip thickness of that 229 compare to the grip thickness of a G17 or 19? sorry for the random questions, I'm trying to find a Sig for my dad's birthday. I own many handguns, but not a Sig yet, so I'm having issues finding the best Sig fit for his hands.
Evans if it's the same model it doesn't change anything about the gun besides the barrel. The cool thing about sig is they all offer a conversion kit so you can change multiple barrels but keep the same gun
The 229 was designed around the 40. I also have many sigs and love the 229 in 9mm. The 229 has a much heavier slide than the 226 and therefore it is a chunk and weight is hefty.
I have not tried to do that, they are similar designs in the same family so theoretically they would be but maybe one of our viewers has actually tested it.
I want to buy a 229 real bad because all my guns are glock well I do have the 365 but who don’t I want a all steal gun I just don’t like the high bore axis
Can either of these guns be carried cocked and locked like a 1911? If there is a round in the chamber, wouldn’t that translate to a single action only firearm? I Really like your videos so much so that I have subscribed and I also do not like double action guns. Just wondering.
We have not personally handled a CPO Sig. The one disappointing thing about it is the warranty. A New Sig has a non-transferable lifetime warranty whereas the CPO has a 1 year warranty. Sig's armory usually does great work and the CPO pistol would be more likely to be in proper operating condition than a random used one. The CPO program does not address cosmetics and does not seem to guarantee a "like-new" condition, just that it works properly. You may get one with holster wear or other cosmetic issues so I would be wary of buying one sight-unseen over the internet unless the seller provides pictures and guarantees you get THAT gun. Overall, I would likely lean towards a New one unless the CPO was significantly less expensive or was on a pistol no longer in production that I really wanted (ie: New is not an option).
Big J I bought a cpo p239 and 226. I own many sigs and the cpo was great finish and function. I really couldn't tell difference from my new sigs and price was several hundred dollars cheaper!
I have a CPO p229 357sig with a German frame shows wear but still is a excellent shooter, I’m looking to get it cerakoted in its original color. My edc.
I don't think they are inaccurate, it is more likely the size/shape of the grip affecting the shooter. I believe with some time spent perfecting the handling of it, that can be eliminated. I don't have this same issue with the P226 now that I have had it for a bit, nor a 229 9mm that I have had now for a while (this 229 was a loaned for the review).
Does that half inch difference really effect how it shoots? I wanna test both out, but I'm looking at the Enhanced Elite and I think the shops around me only have the P229 EE.
From a purely mechanical perspective, it has minimal effect. Any difference will be related to how one or the other fits you and which one you can more comfortably hold and control.
There is no vs nothing between these two pistols, you either want a longer or shorter barrel. The P229 is a little heavier for the 40sw caliber that's it.
Very nice video presentation, I love my 229 in hand fit is perfect. Muscular hands? Crack me up! Ive never seen anyone flex or pose any hand muscle group...
You can get a used P226 around the 500 up to 700 hundred dollar threshold, I got my surplus P226 for 499, it's an amazing deal for a Sig imo, and one that is combat proven and that's been issued to United States navy and even been used by special forces (navy seals)
Really the two pistols sig made that work properly…most of their metal framed pistols are the best option. Other than that, almost every other sig firearm is not very reliable

I would say home defense and range toy. I'm a small dude, if I CC, a 43 would be perfect for me.

It's not a 1/4- 1/3" difference in the slide, it's a 1/2". The p229 is 3.9" and the mk25 or p226 is 4.4"

Was there a Sig-nificant difference in weight?
Roughly 2oz, which would be significant with a pocket pistol but since both of these are north of 30 oz to begin with it is not noticeable.
Good video.
Thank you.
Excelent video!
Congratulations!
Thank you.
P226 Full Size
P229 Compact Size
P224 Subcompact Size
You started with the p226 at 2:26. Except you said p22sex.
Represent Minnesota hahaha, I thought I was the only one that heard that. He said it like 18 times during the video.
Are the slides interchangeable?
I have not tried to do that, they are similar designs in the same family so theoretically they would be but maybe one of our viewers has actually tested it.
I want to buy a 229 real bad because all my guns are glock well I do have the 365 but who don’t I want a all steal gun I just don’t like the high bore axis
Then CZ for you
What is the frame made of?
These are allow frames.
@@HammerStriker Thanks.
Can either of these guns be carried cocked and locked like a 1911? If there is a round in the chamber, wouldn’t that translate to a single action only firearm? I Really like your videos so much so that I have subscribed and I also do not like double action guns. Just wondering.
NO. Carrying cocked with the DA/SA is dangerous. These are designed to be carried hammer down.
Never figured out why you would need a beaver tail on a 226 or 229 lol
Because it's nice???
what's your opinion on the CPO Sig Sauer pistols
Big J I picked up a Cpo 229 in 40. Gun is in perfect/like new condition. Very happy w it. No problems.
Big J I bought a cpo p239 and 226. I own many sigs and the cpo was great finish and function. I really couldn't tell difference from my new sigs and price was several hundred dollars cheaper!
I have a Sig CPO P226 Elite SAO, love it! Mine shows some sign of wear, not brand new, but runs perfectly! Great value!
I have a CPO p229 357sig with a German frame shows wear but still is a excellent shooter, I’m looking to get it cerakoted in its original color. My edc.
I just purchased a Legion P220, and it shoots the same as yours, low and to the left! Is this common with Sigs?
I don't think they are inaccurate, it is more likely the size/shape of the grip affecting the shooter. I believe with some time spent perfecting the handling of it, that can be eliminated. I don't have this same issue with the P226 now that I have had it for a bit, nor a 229 9mm that I have had now for a while (this 229 was a loaned for the review).
trigger finger too far in......try just having the pad of your trigger finger on the trigger.....worked for me
Does that half inch difference really effect how it shoots?
Thank you. Posing hands would be rather boring I guess, but I can produce 200lbs of force with my right hand grip.
nothing about the 225?
We don't currently have a 225 so it was not available to us for this comparison.
I prefer the P226 over the 229.
I prefer the CZ75 over sigs.
been looking at an 80% 226 build, unfortunately the only 80% parts I can find are 4 229s and 228s
Love my glock 19 but God damn that gun is one sexy mo fo❤ wish I could afford one lol
Coincidence, I Also have a G19 (my everyday concealed and open carry), and I also have a p226 navy surplus, both are amazing guns in their own way
You can get a used P226 around the 500 up to 700 hundred dollar threshold, I got my surplus P226 for 499, it's an amazing deal for a Sig imo, and one that is combat proven and that's been issued to United States navy and even been used by special forces (navy seals)
Why so few rounds in these guns
Both guns hold 15 rounds, which is actually quite good for the type of gun that they are.
Too bad it is an anemic 9 mm rather than a real serious 357 Sig. But it is a shame Sig quit making that caliber.
Really the two pistols sig made that work properly…most of their metal framed pistols are the best option. Other than that, almost every other sig firearm is not very reliable
I thought the 229 came in .40 and .357 sig and was 13rds??
12 rounds!
Does the thumb ride on the slide lock?
Neither Hammer nor I have that problem with it.
So there's literally no benefit to getting a 229 🤔
Conceals better.
News flash these might be a classic model not classic guns the 2 I own are and never will be for sale
226 ur showing dosent have the SRT
Or under cut . Not worth the $$$ without the srt
Funny how anything between 4mm and 3cm to an american is "a quodaveninch" :D
I must be the only person in America who owns a P224...🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Won't give up my German sigs until hell freezes over
