  • There are lots of fast laptops, but if you're looking for a unit with Linux pre-loaded, there are few that can touch the power, capabilities and slim design of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 Linux Notebook. Tech expert and long time Linux enthusiast Dave Taylor of www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ ran the X1 Gen 8 Notebook through a variety of tests and performance benchmarks to find out what's great - and what's not so great - about the latest generation of Lenovo ThinkPad units. The results highlight some things that are terrific and a few design features that might just drive you a a bit bonkers...

    That TrackPoint is not a retro nod, it's a cracking piece of user interface. Try scrolling with it; hold the middle button trackpad down with your thumb and then scroll by pushing up/down on the TrackPoint. It's superb once you learn it. That's why it's still there.

      Let's just agree to have different perspectives on that particular interface element. :-)

    Nice - i use a "older" Gen 6. with Manjaro and it runs like a charm - i had in the past many Notebooks - from cheap Medion up-to MacBook Pro -> but i ended with this.
    Love this much.
    I use this for my Work and so .

      Do you think a gen 3 with i7 5600u will be a good laptop still in 2021 for running Linux?

    The buttons are to be used in combination with the red nub. That's how it's always been on thinkpads. Your thumb rest naturally on them, hence the location.

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ah, that makes sense. If you use the red nub. Otherwise I still say the trackpad's 180-degrees off.

      The *litmouse is a classic Thinkpad feature beloved by many users. One either likes it or doesn't, rather like trackball mice. Users who dislike it should buy a different machine, as not every machine is appropriate to every user. One is either a Padder or not.

    Man that looks like a nice one! I’ve been looking for a new laptop (my Dell from 2014 isn’t cutting it) but as you went through the specs I knew it had to be way out of my price range, even with a student discount!
    I can see that trackpad being a pain... with my oversized hands I typically use a wireless mouse anyways

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it's a wonderful laptop with - in my opinion - a completely messed up trackpad. I know others say that the buttons are designed that way to work with the red "nub" joystick-esque pointer, so that might just be a user design, but for me, it's the biggest stumbling block. If you use a wireless mouse, you neatly sidestep that. What kind of mouse do you prefer in this regard?

      @@AskDaveTaylor My laptop doesn’t have Bluetooth so I’m just using a Logitech m325? I got on sale last year. Surprisingly, one of my favorites was a folding no-name off-brand mouse I got on a whim at a discount electronics store for $8! It was super plasticy with loud clicks but was comfortable, portable and worked well... until my Mom dropped it in the parking lot!🤦🏻‍♂️

    button on the side is good if you are using external monitor. i use external monitor and i have to keep laptop screen open to turn on, i can't keep the laptop lcd closed and while using external kb and monitor which i mostly do.

    • @AskDaveTaylor

      Hmmm... on most hardware that's a configuration setting (for example, MacOS). I wonder if there's either a Linux setting or a utility someone's written to offer the work-while-closed feature? I'd dig around on Github or email Lenovo support...

    Hi do you think a gen 3 with i7 5600 U will still be a good laptop in 2021 for running Linux?

      That CPU is fine but do check on the Thinkpad forums as the specialize in Thinkpads to see if it's the best machine for what YOU want to do with a computer. I disregard those outside the Thinkpad enthusiast community as they're both skilled and HYPER-critical of anything that's not well done. Many Linux enthusiasts like them but a notebook is more than a CPU and some users may need maxxed out workstation replacement notebooks with features better suiting pro needs like virtualization.

    Hello, how is thinkpad X1 yoga to run linux (fedora) ? I am a linux user (fulltime :D) and am planning to try a 2-in laptop like X1 yoga, but I am not sure how is linux support when it comes to touchscreen's ?? kindly help if naybody has any info on linux support for touchscreen and 2-in-1

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure about Linux support for touchscreens either, but Lenovo has historically always been very pro-Linux so you might reach out to their sales tech and see if they have ideas. Different distros might have differing support too.

    Dave Taylor, do you know if it is running a stock kernel or did Canonical provide custom modules?

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I no longer have the unit to check its kernel ID, unfortunately.

    Nice, what about privacy? Does it use any kind of coreboot/libreboot? Is the Intel Management Engine still active?

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Detailed technical questions like that are best sent directly the vendor's customer service or sales team, YT. So I'd ask Lenovo.

    • @obfuscated3090
      @obfuscated3090 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need specialty makes for libre boot options. They're far too niche for major makes. Purism, System 76 etc may suit much better.

      @AskDaveTaylor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have any hands-on experience with the Gen9 but I'd be pretty shocked to learn it didn't run Linux really well. Lenovo's always been a Linux-friendly manufacturer.

    I wouldnt call the red nub retro or imply it is outdated. On my think pad I prefer it and use it more than the trackpad. Half the reason I personally still buy them

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Different perspective. I appreciate that. But you have to admit, it never really caught on and Lenovo is the only company on the market offering this particular input peripheral.

      Because it's part of the product and something that some people will care about. You are okay with it as-is, which is great. Others would be surprised and disappointed that it's not something that Lenovo has redesigned and streamlined.

    Hey Imperial boy, next time, put the SI dimensions on screen, at least.

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      "Imperial boy"? Sounds like you're being rude, which certainly seems uncalled for, to say the least. What are SI dimensions too, do you mean "the screen size"? Maybe instead of trying to be snarky you could just be civil and explain what you would like to have included next time?
