After I select the mask, it won't let me use the paintbrush tool.

it is because you need to add a brush tool, it says basic but that is not an actual brush. go to brushes and add a new brush

hey u might dont need this anymore, i hv a same probs and just figured it out T-T. u can see on the right edge of transparency box three little line, u can clik it and find show thumbnails, clik the show thumbnails

it isn't fully erasing for me, it is leaving the parts I am trying to erase semi transparent :/

Make sure the color of the paint brush fully black, sometimes illustrator puts it like a kinda geryish color
