They just live wild in our gardens, pinching our cat food (we don't mind) very noisily (crash bang!) and gobbling up the slugs and snails. They're considered the gardener's friend. I bought a hedgehog and my home temperature is about 65 degrees. I turn my space heater on in my room to about 72 degrees and leave the door closed but at night it goes down to 65 again. Is that too cold for a hedgehog. I know they like the heat but mine seems to be acting normal. I just don't want him to go into hibernation. He sleeps all day until like midnight. He is 5 months old is that normal?
+Earthling1984 And he wouldn't go into hibernation at 5 months, that is too young for that to happen. But soon it will be a possibility, and it can/will most likely cause death. Try to get your heat consistently above 72F. If you don't want to run that high wattage space heater, get yourself a light, probably around 50 to 75 watt for how much you need to raise the temperature (7F or more). Get something like a red or purple/blue reptile heat lamp, and hang that over the cage. Leave that on 24/7. Put a thermometer in the hedgehog tank as well to test the temperature and make sure light is keeping it in correct range.
I have three pet hedgehogs 1- he’s really fast, blue, collects rings and spin dashes, and his favorite food is chili dogs. 2-A black hedgehog, who calls himself the ultimate life form, he sacrificed himself and got revived with amnesia but we got him back to the way he was. To this day he’s still looking for that DAMN fourth chaos emerald. 3- A hedgehog from the future, he has telekinesis powers, he tried to kill my blue hedgehog because of him being the “IBLIS TRIGGER” and I kept hearing “ITS NO USE, TAKE THIS.” but he’s our friend now.
My hedgehog sleeps aaaallll daaayy but goes wild at night. I've only had her for about four days and she's so cute. She jumps and tries to catch strings and toys like a dog.
That's good to know, I've been thinking about getting a hedgehog, it's usually really quiet in my room and I miss having another animal in my room to keep me company when I get home from school.
Great to see you hold your hedgehog and show us how to BE with it. To see those front legs so agile, moving sideways completely, I had no idea! And that nose is twitching all of the time, they must've a very good sense of smell. The movements she makes with her head, when she's on her back, it looks like she prefers to be turned around with her face down, trying to wriggle back to normal.
I dont have to buy them, they just come to me.. 😅 and had also neighbours, friends bringing me hedgehogs they found on the street or sideways, after hearing that i shelter them to give them winter-survival-help. Someone eaven brought me one in a shopping-bag 😂 Recently got one adult and 2 babys moving into my garden.. if you want to adopt a hedgehog and own a garden: just put a fox-safe hedgehog-house into the garden put enough straw and hay inside, to make it warm and cozy, put water and hedgehog-food or dry catfood, apples, bread beside the entry and they will usualy move in by themselves... they come and go as they please, but mostly will sleep in their house during winter and just come out to eat and drink. If you find one still rooming around in autumn, it means he couldnt find a safe shelter yet and is still to underweight for a wintersleep.. this means he will probably starve/freeze to death without some human support: then he needs urgent help! You can just pick them up, they dont bite. Once they moved into your garden, they will mostly stay there the full year, hiding somewhere in the bushes and eat all the nasty slugs, bugs and spiders they can catch. If you dont bother them once in their winter-shelter, they will feel safe and come back every year as long as they live, sometimes eaven bringing you their babys.. so its realy rewarding to shelter hedgehogs.
Yes. You should never take a wild animal and keep it as a pet! Animals that were born in the wild, should stay in the wild. They have a life out there, they have lived there since birth; it's not fair to put them in a cage. Now, my hedgehogs are captive bred African Pygmy Hedgehogs. They were born in cages, their moms, dads, grandparents, great grandparents were all living in cages. This is what they know. If you want a pet, always only buy captive bred.
He most like has some sort of lid for when he shuts the cage. Not having a lid on any pets cage other than like a fish isn't very safe as it's possible they can escape
That is not her everyday cage it just one for the video. You can use tubs but much bigger ones and high enough walls. I recommend C&c cages because you can change them up and there cheaper then store bought
I rehome my baby hedgies around 8-10 weeks when they have opened their eyes and eating food on their own. 4 and even 5 weeks is too small to me. I got mine at the age of around 6 weeks but bonded with her and she was fine. I did not get her from a breeder…just from someone whose pet had babies. Mine done well and became super trusting of me. She used to love for me to put her in the pockets of my tshirts while I cleaned or sat around the house. It gave her time to bond with me and feel safe. I handled her frequently and now she never hisses or spikes up with me. Since getting her, she has had two litters of babies and has allowed me to get close to her babies. That may not be the case with every mother hedgehog because some will abandon their babies, but mine trusted me and I trusted her and out of the two litters she had, every single baby hedgie became tame and was used to being handled by human hands. Like I said though, this may not be the case for every other hedgie. I do not recommend handling newborn hedgies because your mother hedgie may abandon them. I’ve had nothing but positive experiences with my mother and father hedgies and both of their litters. All the babies were extremely calm and sweet and that’s because I bonded with them and handled them from a young age. That’s not the case with every hedgie. Each one is different which is why I don’t recommend handling newborns in case your mother hedgie abandons them.
came across this video. we have many wild Hedgehog in our area. I always liked them. There are so many of them here no one have them as pets. My mastiff dogs found a Hedgehog the other night we just put it in a container and released it back to the bush. cute little things
Hedgehogs aren't considered exotic in my state, so it's perfectly legal to buy one at some pet stores. My parents actually asked me if I'd like a pet hedgehog. I understand they need a fairly large enclosure, need to be kept warm, need an exercise wheel, and prefer a diet of insects like crickets and meal worms.
I've been reading up on keeping a hedgehog as a pet a lot and have completely filled out a complete journal of caring, housing, diet, grooming, bathing etc etc. And I know that hedgehogs in the wild will usually always have fleas and ticks. In my research I only gathered and trusted information that would come from experienced and/or licensed sites, owners and sanctuaries. But sometimes I'll google something for a quick answer, and someone on yahoo said "Hedgehogs NEED to have fleas~ blablabla stuff ~ something something for the blood circulation." I highly doubt this as other sites haven't mentioned this at all and I just spent two full days gathering information and tomorrow I'm going to call around the city to find a vet that'll take hedgehogs. But, I just want to be sure eh. So, do hedgehogs really need to have fleas or was that guy just misinformed or referring to wild hedgehogs?
No that's incorrect, African Pygmy Hedgehogs should not have fleas or ticks. They do sometimes get mites which you can get treated in the vets. And believe it or not, you're one of few people to actually do actual research, a lot of people say "They're cute" buy it and mistreat it, so.. Thanks :)
Thanks for clearing that up, I thought it was weird haha. I spent 2 more days and night doing research and asked the previous owner/breeder a lot of questions too. Last friday I brought my new hedgehog home and she is still a bit shy but it's going really well! She has a fabulous cage and fleece bedding because the petshop had to order the bedding I wanted, but she seems to love the fleece but I'll be alternating since the fleece does capture the smell a lot and I don't like that haha.
katy rose Well if you got a male and a female the female would like to have a baby's if you got 2 males they would fight for dominate if you got a female then got another female nothing would happen but they would have company so I suggest getting a female
Ive seen nice and mean ones of both sexes , like the other commentors said, unless your trying to breed them just pick a nice one regardless of sex (although in my opinion the grumpy ones are absolutely adorable as well)
The whole video I'm just like "Put her down! She wants to sit, she doesn't want to be in your hands!" Cos you'll put her down for a second and you can see she's like YESSS and then you pick her right back up.
They should be out in the gardens, in the wild. Lovely things. One evening we heard such a lot of scraping and thumping coming from the hedge. Out popped a hedgehog, just sauntered off calm as you like. I thought it was going to be a badger for all the noise he was making. Lol
Yeah, in the UK you guys have European Hedgehogs living wild. In the USA we don't. We have many other animals such as squirrels, skunks, racoons, possums, deer, coyotes, bears, elk, etc., etc., etc.. We keep African Pygmy hedgehogs as pets. They aren't wild here and are only cage pets in the USA.
um... I need advice my nana got me a hedgehog from a breeder and what does it mean if it is biting me all the time!!!! because I've had it for at least 2 or 3 years I mean I wear the gloves and it bites through the gloves!!!!!!!!!! what could I do to make it stop biting I really need advice!!!!!
damn. long time to own without it being tame. I've never been bit by a hedgoehog and vast majority of mine were sweerhearts. only real advice is keep it in a very nice cage and handle daily.
***** most hedgehogs that are being sold today come from long lines of captive bred pets. They may have been shipped over years ago, but, the ones currently being sold as pets are used to living in cages. Their parents and parents parents parents have been captive cage pets. They would not survive in the wild. But, yes, I do agree that we should leave wild animals alone.
They typically do not bite, they quill up to defend themselves, when they quill up if feels like being stuck with a toothpick, it is not painful really.
ok I got a question my mom only hates pets because they stink. dose hedgehogs stink like badley. I know u said they don't need a bath like EVERYDAY but I'm just trying to see if they stink
Bullshit answers to very valid question. Hedgehogs definitely smell, their urine and poo smell and without bath they would smell too. And it's quite bad smell. I had lots of different pets and hedgehog actually surprised me with his smell. Also when it runs at night it spreads the smell around. Ultimately hedgehogs aren't naturally clean. It's opposite - they smear smelly things into themselves for some reason. Owner needs to keep them clean himself. But if you will have it clean, pick poo every day, have proper substrate and change it regularly and wash hedgehog monthly it won't smell. Well, there will be a scent but nothing unpleasant.
Just letting you know that I've been in contact with a breeder near me for a while now and am getting my hedgehog this weekend finally and I have found your videos really helpful! So I guess this is a thank you. Stay Awesome :P
Take care of your hedgehogs. Make sure to feed it rings and chili dogs, let it run on tracks, and let it make animal friends. If the hedgehog isn't able to explore, it'll break into a spin dash and break your stuff.
So, im getting an albino hedgehog. Is it safe for it to go out in the sun? And is it even safe for it to walk with a leash? Or however you spell a leash. 😂😂
thanks for the advice :) but I would want to handle my hedgehog is before getting one and i don't really like the idea of shipping hedgehog. I can always drive to the place... just take a long time.
Well, properly socialized and kept hedgehogs will be nice from the time you get them. If they aren't calm and tame and easy to handle upon purchase, that just means the breeder was no good. A quality breeder will sell quality pets. You wouldn't buy a cat or dog that bites, but, people often buy small animals that are scared or aggressive. Also, often times people get pets without proper knowledge on their care and how to keep them. Buying from bad breeders just lets those bad breeders keep breeding, abusing their animals, selling too early, not socializing the babies, and doing it just for money. Not buying poorly raised pets means these bad breeders will go out of business. Only buy quality socialized pets from good breeders. That being said, the owners also need to be knowledgeable. You don't know how many times I see animals being cared for so wrongly. If you want a pet, research extensively. Then, research more. Then, research more. Finally, get the pet. Within a year of daily handling this hedgehog should be calm and tame (even if it came from a bad breeder). Hedgehogs don't like loud noises, fast movements, or being forced to do anything. Calm, daily handling and treat offering is all that is needed. They should be out of their cage at least an hour a day. Use gloves or a small box (like a large shoebox) to handle them until they are calm. Offer treats, be very calm. It can take months to tame a poorly raised hedgehog, but, after a year, it should be fully calm by now..
Ya so you know that video you made? "How to Handle & Tame a mean / aggressive / scared hedgehog?" He's like that, but he never bites or stays balled up, and he sleeps on me sometimes, I guess I shouldn't have said this is the nicest hedgehog, maybe more like the least scared/skittish hedgehog. Also I have done a lot of research, and I am still doing research, (obviously, I'm here watching your videos). Unfortunately there isn't really an authority on hedgehogs, there are a lot of websites, many of which have very conflicting info. I would think that a veterinarian would be a good source, but even some of those had bad info. like using a wood hut/hideout. He seemed very nice when I got him from the breeder btw, he didn't bite or ball up or anything. Anyway, I got him a snuggle scarf so that he's snuggled up on my chest and I've been singing to him and that seemed to help him calm down. Thanks for the videos, very helpful. :)
What about wild hedgehogs . How do you get them to trust you I have a wild hedgehog living in my garden and I put out food for it but it seems to be very nervous when I go up to it.
Well with the “nice hedgehog” thing um Many people (at least in my area) need to buy them online and drive out of state to pick them up. That’s what we did. I’m the only person in my family who my hedgehog is comfortable with after a little less than a minute. It takes my mom and stepdad about 5 minutes before she opens up to them and anyone else she just doesn’t really come out. It’s not mean, it’s there way of protecting themselves. How would you like it if you were picked up by someone 20x bigger than you and don’t know them?

I bought a hedgehog and my home temperature is about 65 degrees. I turn my space heater on in my room to about 72 degrees and leave the door closed but at night it goes down to 65 again. Is that too cold for a hedgehog. I know they like the heat but mine seems to be acting normal. I just don't want him to go into hibernation. He sleeps all day until like midnight. He is 5 months old is that normal?
+SuperMechaFrieza too cold. 65F way too cold. Anything under 70F is risking it, and most recommend over 72F. 75 to 82F is the range most prefer.
+Earthling1984 And he wouldn't go into hibernation at 5 months, that is too young for that to happen. But soon it will be a possibility, and it can/will most likely cause death. Try to get your heat consistently above 72F.
The best commentary. XD
In all honesty, I decided to youtube hedgehog videos after finding out it's my Patronus on Pottermore...
lol. well welcome to my video :) I have plenty of hedgehog videos for you :)
Me too! I feel like I have to get one now...
Earthling1984 thanks for cleaning sonic
Your patronus is hedgehog too? SAME
Yo that’s literally me
My hedgehog sleeps aaaallll daaayy but goes wild at night. I've only had her for about four days and she's so cute. She jumps and tries to catch strings and toys like a dog.
So cute..I saw Hedgehog family in our neighbour😃
That's good to know, I've been thinking about getting a hedgehog, it's usually really quiet in my room and I miss having another animal in my room to keep me company when I get home from school.
Great to see you hold your hedgehog and show us how to BE with it. To see those front legs so agile, moving sideways completely, I had no idea! And that nose is twitching all of the time, they must've a very good sense of smell. The movements she makes with her head, when she's on her back, it looks like she prefers to be turned around with her face down, trying to wriggle back to normal.
rip they're illegal in california
Ariana Sanchez you can smoke weed but not have a hedgehog wtf
SlenderFoxy13 Yeah, it's a rule that it is a hazard to the ecosystem. Food webs and all that
Ariana Sanchez: I absolutely hate the People's Republic of California. Communists won't let us have hedgehogs!
Charles Anthony It's a rule that the introduction of the hedgehog would throw the current Californian ecosystem out of whack.. sorry about that ::
Charles Anthony :/*
Ms XY
As far as i read the comments: the only one with useful information. Thanks
When I found a wild hedgehog I decided it should be free, so released it.
Fed's World cant save the world otherwise
, where can I buy a young Hedgehog pet in Seminole or St Pete or Clearwater Largo
Wasn't it always free it was wild, im confused. Also I don't wanna be mean
We don’t have wild hedgehogs in the USA
This is so informative, one of the local breeders near me gives them at 2-3 week and I knew that didn’t sound right 😭 glad I came across your channel!
That is a horrible breeder.
At two weeks old their eyes aren’t even opened yet so if their eyes are open then they are at least close to four weeks.
The first time watching this video I spent most of my time just laughing at how cute this hedgehog is and how she holds her arms and all lol
I am in the UK so i don't even know if it is possible to have a hedgehog but oml they are so adorable!!! Want one:'))
Star Shinebright, in the UK we have our very own native species of hedgehog. AND THEY NEED OUR HELP ! Google : hedgehogs uk
HEDGIES ARE TOO CUTE
+jo dallas I agree 100%
Will they jump out of their cages like not like store bought cages but cages like you have with the clear bins
He most like has some sort of lid for when he shuts the cage. Not having a lid on any pets cage other than like a fish isn't very safe as it's possible they can escape
The cage has to be tall enough so the won't try to climb out. But they don't jump that often.
That is not her everyday cage it just one for the video. You can use tubs but much bigger ones and high enough walls. I recommend C&c cages because you can change them up and there cheaper then store bought
Adorable. I had to look. I don't even think we have em in my country lol
I bought a hedgehog yesterday and when I got her she was nice but now when I put my hand in the cage she pops and quills and i don’t know what to do
"Bro listen, i'm cool with you handling me frequently but why are you spinning me arround so much? I'm not Sonic, okay?"
can you walk hedgehogs like on leashes i just want to know
You can tie a scrunchie to yarn or string lol and it is like a leash
came across this video. we have many wild Hedgehog in our area.
DONT FEED THEM MEALWORMS !!
@@englishcple Okay. Thanks. I haven't gotten one yet due to other commitments.
I can't get a hedgehog because they're illegal here:( BUT it's still fun to learn! I wish I could get some!
shaylen sanders depends on where you are. but if you get a permit you can own one.
shaylen sanders where do you live
Have you heard of the blue hedgehog? It's meant to be a myth but I think it's true. I hope to get him as a pet.
*s a n i c*
I found a baby hedgehog in my garden and i called him sonic. XD
When he told the Hedgehog to say byebye I actually was expecting him to say bye. Got damn XD

I recommend female hedgehogs
+Cookies N Cream why female??:0
She has a fabulous cage and fleece bedding because the petshop had to order the bedding I wanted, but she seems to love the fleece but I'll be alternating since the fleece does capture the smell a lot and I don't like that haha.
angelkity1 I can't beleve people do that :( I always research proper care on a pet before i get one.
Hedgehogs are just like big hamsters😊
I would more say a guinea pig is a big hamster..
+Amelia Shipley They're more like small soft, porcupines. Or giant, moving miniature porcupine figurines.
Big spikey hamsters
No more like a Guinea pig with Quills
Amelia Shipley f*** you! Hamsters are shit!
She seems to love being shown off. “Here I am internet and I’m a good girl!” 😍
This hedgehog is so adorable! She's like a lil cinnamon bun
is it better to get a female hedgehog or a male?
katy rose Well if you got a male and a female the female would like to have a baby's if you got 2 males they would fight for dominate if you got a female then got another female nothing would happen but they would have company so I suggest getting a female
or an male with no female
Even females should be kept alone. So just get one. I haven't noticed any difference in temperment of males vs females.
Ive seen nice and mean ones of both sexes , like the other commentors said, unless your trying to breed them just pick a nice one regardless of sex (although in my opinion the grumpy ones are absolutely adorable as well)
how can i buy a hedgehog from you?
Sorry I don't currently sell hedgehogs :(
Earthling1984 aw, man. thanks for the quick reply!
just look for a breeder
JAY PARKKKKKK
The whole video I'm just like "Put her down! She wants to sit, she doesn't want to be in your hands!" Cos you'll put her down for a second and you can see she's like YESSS and then you pick her right back up.
sounds like a personal problem.
+michelle rara is not my name thats my mom's name
+Earthling1984
I really like your videos..
seems like you like pets
+Earthling1984 that is a stupid response i hate when people say that bs
You know what your vids has been REALLY HELPFUL so without further a do imma subscribe
Thanks! And welcome!
Sooooo cute! I'm in love! Lol

I hate sanic to me he doesn't exist

um... I need advice my nana got me a hedgehog from a breeder and what does it mean if it is biting me all the time!!!! because I've had it for at least 2 or 3 years I mean I wear the gloves and it bites through the gloves!!!!!!!!!! what could I do to make it stop biting
I really need advice!!!!!
damn. long time to own without it being tame. I've never been bit by a hedgoehog and vast majority of mine were sweerhearts. only real advice is keep it in a very nice cage and handle daily.
+Earthling1984 ok great advice
***** African Pygmy Hedgehogs are captive bred and don't live naturally in the USA. It would not survive being let go.
+Skyler Metcalfe Bullets?
Instructions unclear, ended up with a hedgehog that is faster than the speed of sound
Thanks for all the information about these cuties. I've never own one but I had a good time listening to you :)
when you were caring him he was like what were am i😅😅😅😅
Natalia mateo what is life?
I taught my hedgehog to make clicking sounds and say “do you know da wae”
Cringe
Knuckles is not even a hedgehog. Cringe
I think you should’ve taught that to an Echinda
You give really nice advice Earthling thank you now I know to not buy 2 week old hedgehogs :P.
2 week is insanely young! any breeder selling that young should not be aloud to keep pets! 10 weeks at the youngest, preferably 3 months!
Thanks for the advice!
wow, i don't normally like the idea of pets but that thing looks adorable
I have a Hedgehog who's sarcastic . He collects gold rings and emeralds. His favorite food is chili dogs and his best friend is a fox.
I have a question
if a hedgehog bit me would it hurt like when you got a small boo boo? (sorry for my bad grammar)
They typically do not bite, they quill up to defend themselves, when they quill up if feels like being stuck with a toothpick, it is not painful really.
oh thanks, but my hedgehog hates me, when I go to him he hisses and quills up
yeah he is super scared, he is always under a blanket, when I cough he hiss and gets scared. but thank anyway
I was bite by mine and it was really cute lol, he just wanted to see what I taste like. It feels like a week pinch
I think he is assuming Julia is a little girl? By her use of the term "boo boo".
ok I got a question my mom only hates pets because they stink. dose hedgehogs stink like badley. I know u said they don't need a bath like EVERYDAY but I'm just trying to see if they stink
Derek Smith Hedgehogs don't smell at all. Especially if you bathe them and clean the cage. like, ever.
Derek Smith no smell :) just keep the cage clean.

No one likes a dried hedgehog
Just letting you know that I've been in contact with a breeder near me for a while now and am getting my hedgehog this weekend finally and I have found your videos really helpful! So I guess this is a thank you. Stay Awesome :P
Take care of your hedgehogs. Make sure to feed it rings and chili dogs, let it run on tracks, and let it make animal friends. If the hedgehog isn't able to explore, it'll break into a spin dash and break your stuff.
like sonic?
Can hedgehogs swim in water?
Yes, they can. Watch some videos of them taking a bath.
Bronco Turbo someone's gotta tell Sega that hedgehogs can swim
Rings get LOST like a MOTHERFU****!
in Africa , we let them roam freely in the natural habitats ,the wild .
wait soo.... does it hurt if you touch hedgehogs i dont really know since ya know cartoons
+Ced Rickets (CoolZloot) Doesn't hurt
why is sonic so spikey when he is happy?
You haven't seen Sonic with tensed-up quills...
He literally gains spikes on his head.
You deffinetly want to watch for the signs of a healthy hedgehog so these video's are worth it.
From my experience, they all can be nice and peaceful as long as they believe they're safe.
I really want a hedgehog but they are illegal in California
I'm from California and they are legal here there has been no reason to make them illegal
Lilly oskoui Ok thank you
+Taylor Ekstrom Their illegality is the worst here in Pennsylvania.
so are guns in 8 year old californian kid's pockets...
so the right answer to you is this: "buy one anyway" period!
So, im getting an albino hedgehog. Is it safe for it to go out in the sun? And is it even safe for it to walk with a leash? Or however you spell a leash. 😂😂
yes, yes
Hedgehogs are legal to own where I live, but can't be sold here :(
I hate Ottawa!
But Its Not illegal In the Country i Live in .
Yea would have to go to Quebec or other places to find breeders :l
I know how you feel:\
You can just find a Canadian Hedgehog breeder that ships their hedgehogs.
thanks for the advice :) but I would want to handle my hedgehog is before getting one and i don't really like the idea of shipping hedgehog. I can always drive to the place... just take a long time.
This is like the nicest hedgehog ever, mine is not at all like this and we have been socializing him for a year now!
How do you get them to trust you
I have a wild hedgehog living in my garden and I put out food for it but it seems to be very nervous when I go up to it.
You leave them be, Brian May has written a lot about wild hedgehogs. Leave food and water out.
I know this is kinda weird but.....you sound like Jahova, one of KYRSp33dy's friends.
Not weird but random
honesty, i think the hedgehog really wanted to get down from his hands
Thanks for replying! :)
THATS A REALLY FAT HEDGEHOG HAHA oops caps
These creatures are oddly adorable.
I got my hedgehog when she was about 11 weeks...and surprisingly she is very social and whenever you put her down she'll run back to you
Unitaters Yup. All my hogs are calm tame and nice. Lots of bad breeders out there. Glad you found one who was raised well.
WHat the heck is that thing
Its called a hedgehog. And your the one who clicked the video. -.-

I taught my hedehog to break the sound barrier
Awww she is lovely bless her
Well with the “nice hedgehog” thing um
Many people (at least in my area) need to buy them online and drive out of state to pick them up.
How would you like it if you were picked up by someone 20x bigger than you and don’t know them?
wow yours is so calm
