I would reccomend giving a knife with such a big head a bigger handle, something like this will probably be used for chopping of some kind. you could increase its gut size and give it a foot (increasing the width where you grab, and giving it a thicker lower part so it wouldnt slip out of the hand so easily)
You’re making excellent progress for a smith as young as you. Keep up the good work, and remember to wear your respirator when operating your grinders! Also, I’ll save you some trouble with regards to the rabbit hole of heat treating. Find some Parks 50 quench oil, first of all, since there’s no better quenchant on the market, it’ll help your knives reach full hardness. Secondly, remember to normalize your steel three times over before quenching. Lastly, check out a channel called KnifeSteelNerds for any information on how to heat treat your particular steel as well as the general properties of steel itself. He has a website too, with even more info. All of this information will really help you with producing knives that will hold their edge for a very long time, reach full hardness (and thus sharpness), and not break.
That is an amazing job,my friend. You truly have a God given talent in the operations.Keep up the excellent work..and I'll be watching with a 👍🏼. 😊😎🤙🏼🫵🏼👍🏼
Awww thank you so much! I really appreciate that! The thing that helped me go from making horrible knives to making the ones I am now is just time. That goes for if your forging, just as you think your done heat it up at least two more times to make sure everything is nice and straight and look how you want it to. Or if you’re grinding just spend those extra few minutes to make sure everything is all clean and nice and pretty. Just spending some extra time on each knife really helped me! Thank you again for commenting!!
Dude that's a beast, I once took weeks to forge a 4lb Bowie knife, I forged it from some half inch leaf springs, and it was a pain to forge, I don't regret it because it looks so awesome!
That’s awesome man! The feeling you felt when you were done after 4 weeks must have been great! That’s exactly what I forged mine out of, And it also took me 3 weeks to finish😅 so I know how you felt and have much respect for it! Thanks for your support!
@@NolansKnives hell yeah man, hated every second of forging it, my arm was sore cause I only used a hand hammer, but after I finished I didn't regret a second, A 4LB BOWIE!, not alot of people can say that forged a huge knife that could kill a rhino lol
Hey Nolan been struggling with my grinder I got to make knifes is that craftsman grinder the only one you use?? I have trouble with the flat back on mine
Yes that craftsman grinder was the only one I used for about 4 years. However recently for my birthday I got a OBM 2x72 grinder, it makes all my work about 5 times faster!
@@NolansKnives I actually forged two blades ~12' each, a railroad spike tomahawk, three tiny axeheads and a full-metal sickle/blacksmith knife. It was a tiring five hour run.
The patients and effort you put in? Keep it up. Let it carry to all your work and grow as you do. It will cause a lot of frustration and get harder but you will excel at everything. Youll stay ahead of the curve. Good job.
Damn great job. I lived my life wanting to be a "fancy business man" and now that I've achieved it, all I want is some land to myself and my family and do things like this
No temper? You need to temper or your knife is as brittle as glass. Temper at 400 for 2 hours, twice. Forge On!!! Also try forging to shape. Neil Kamimura is the best resource, imo, for this.
Secure you anvil firmly, you will save a lot of energy and your hammerstrikes will be more effective. Find yourself a BIG log with the right height, nail the anvil on it and bolt the log to the ground with some angle-iron. Keep going!
Very Great! Slice thin, chop limbs and tame an alligator! That's an excellent piece of work.! Next comes a sheath! Leather? Wood? Both? You have your choice, or any combination of materials. Your doing great! Keep going!❤🎉🎉
i am also 14 one thing the end result is great though you grind out a lot of your material so you lose strength in the blade due to the fact that the molecules are not being compacted and formed
@@BEMetalMelting I completely disagree! I think we’ve just got different styles and neither one is better than the other! They are unique and awesome in all ways!
First thing you need to do is you need to get rid of that harbor freight garbage that would help you with forging a little bit better other than that good knife I like it
@@Stevenparsons0 Thank you! I did actually finally got rid of that old anvil, and I bought myself an old peter wright. You’re so right, it makes forging so much easier and more fun!
