Nazareth was that gritty, killer rock band I remember from the 70s-80s pool halls, biker bars & skating rinks. They got radio airplay somehow regardless of the lyrics. Just good time rock n roll right there.
♥ *Yes...this is from 1975 (I was 13 yrs), and I wore this album out. The 'SOUND' when performed live is a bagpipe played into a Talk-Box. This one and "Love Hurts" were their two most radio played songs...but; Miss Misery__Beggars Day__Please Don't Judas Me__Whiskey Drinkin' Woman...are all really good songs as well.* ♥
When you talk about the diversity of 70s music you are 100% right. Listening to a little AM radio to a pop station was an adventure growing up. One station could have Motown, rock, bubblegum pop, country, and novelty songs within one hour.
I worked at a little AM station in the mid-70's. We operated daytime only, and our format depended on the day of the week and time of day. Weekdays was country/gospel followed by MOR, more country, top 40, and end the day with easy listening. Saturday mornings were similar country/gospel and MOR segments, the afternoon all top 40. Sundays were church broadcasts, some mellow top 40, and an afternoon of easy listening. My friends and I worked the top 40 shifts, only we sorta converted it to progressive rock, though that included anything from Led Zeppelin to Marshall Tucker to Hawkwind. Most fun job I ever had. Small station, no program manager or anything. We ran our own shows, with the occasional visits from the manager to berate us about playing that "acid rock". We got away with a lot there. We also became the most popular radio in the area for just about anyone under 30. Even got my first copy of Humble Pie's "Smokin'" from a listener that dropped by to have me play it on the air, then turned and said to just keep it, since he was usually listening to me anyway.
You guys hit on more of my favourites than any other reactors. Always cheer me up :) Guns 'n' Roses did a half decent cover of this, but this original is a real classic.
Nazareth is a Scottish band and “Hair of the Dog” was released in the mid 70’s. The song is about a woman who uses men then leaves them being warned that the guy she’s trying to get with is wise to her game. He’s telling her that she’ll be the one played if she tries her games with him. The best song on the album is Please Don’t Judas Me.
I have seen Nazareth live, and they used a bagpipe for that "talk box" solo. I'm not sure what they use in the studio, but I have seen it done with bagpipes!
That wasn't a real bag pipe it was used to hide the talk box. I thought the same thing until I saw a live video of them and you can clearly see the talk box tube.
@@XA351GT I don't know. I was not sitting in a crowd. The stage was a riser about a foot tall, and he was less than 3 feet from me. I even got to speak with him after the show and mentioned it because I am Scottish. I think Alex Williams is correct, possibly a talk box thru the pipes. If you are interested it was Nazareth opening for Uriah Heep at the Ohio Center, in Columbus, in 1993 or 1994.

You nailed it on the 80's vs 70's sound with the synthesizer comment. Digital instruments and effects got good enough in the 80's that you could use them for music and not sound cheesy. But it also meant that the overall sound styles converged to whatever was being manufactured by companies in digital effects, especially since these sounds could be saved as computer data and shared. In contrast, the 70's was the golden age of analog sound effects and mechanical tricks, especially in the studios. That variety in 70's analog provided the tools for more diverse sounds.

RIP Dan McCafferty (lead singer) and Manny Charlton (lead guitarist) who both passed away recently (Dan in November and Manny in July). Nazareth formed in 1968 and have been performing and recording since then. Dan's singing was inspired by primarily Little Richard. He went on to create his own screaming, raspy sound that inspired numerous 70s and 80s bands, including giants like AC/DC and Guns N Roses. Listen to Dan shred on uptempo rockers like This Flight Tonight, Bad Bad Boy, Telegram, and don't miss the timeless rock ballads Dream On and Love Hurts. Long live Rock N Roll!!!!
Nazareth is in my top 5 favorite bands. I have all of their stuff. I have had lunch with the guitar player a few times. All their 70s albums are great from Razamanaz on.
That’s funny you say that, I remember when AC/DC Back in Black first came out my friend hadn’t heard it yet and he asked me who the new singer sounded like and I told him Dan McCafferey.
My dad had an impressive collection of 70's rock on lp. I listened to them on headphones while he was at work. He caught me singing the sunofabitch part very loudly. One of the very few times he let me swear. Oh, I was about 7 or 8 at the time in the early 80's. I think I wore out his AC/DC records.

Of course, then I joined the Air Force and became quite proficient at cursing. But that’s a story for another time! 😋
What I loved about this channel right from the start is Lex, she just gets it and has fun. Brad was a different story, too uptight and way too serious. However, he does seem to go with the flow now and that's good.
i saw Nazareth live in the 70s, ( i came of age in the 70s. best music of my life. ) the singer had fallen off of a stage some days earlier. so his feet had broken arches. he brought out 2 stools. one to sit on and one to hold his whiskey and smokes. he did the whole show while sitting on that stool.
