- Memorial Day is a day in the United States for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day to honor and mourn those who died while serving in the U.S. military. Many volunteers place American flags on the graves of military personnel in national cemeteries.
In the words of George S. Patton: "It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived."
I use that quote every year on this day. it really says it all for me

Good quote but maybe it could be improved. There is a season to appreciate that they lived and a season to mourn their loss. I don’t think it’s wrong, there is just a point in time where it may not apply. There is also a point in time where it absolutely applies.
And then he slapped the piss out of a soldiers suffering from ptsd.
My Dad served in Vietnam, came home, adopted me, taught me how to shoot, ride, jump, and died just over a year ago. This hit me hard, my wife is watching it now, thanks for your service and thanks for leading Sir.

US army/marine won't be in direct combat in another war, atleast nowhere near the levels of the GWOT wars which is a dwarf to 20th century wars

Possibly the most powerful message I've heard in a very long time, maybe ever.
For those carrying survivors guilt or ptsd and thinking of suicide, this sends a powerful message that life is a gift and needs to be valued. We owe it to those who left without a choice, to live the life they couldn't.

My dad was in the Marines. He joined our creator 3 years ago; back when airports were closed and there were no flights because of the pandemic. I wasn't able to join him on his last march on this earth. This poem reminds me so much of him. Much Respect from Zamboanga City, Philippines

Words can be very powerful when said by a great man, you are a great man. Thank for your service. i served with 11 Armored Cav in NAM IN 1970.
Heavy. Coming from a civilian it's hard to understand on the same level of you and the ones that made the ultimate sacrifice....but just know I am grateful for all the sacrifices from ww1 to now so I can enjoy the freedom I do to this very day...I am forever grateful. Respect to the highest degree.

Detonating artillery shells falling on Dunkirk echoed in the distance. It was late May, 1940, my father was only eleven years old. He was in a small restaurant with my grandfather, the two of them perplexed by the French soldier sitting next to them having a feast. The soldier's meal was lavish, far in excess of what virtually all Europeans were used to in those days of rationing.
My grandfather struck up conversation with the soldier. "Excuse me, but you are using up all your ration coupons on this one meal. What will you eat later if you spend them all like this?"
The soldier smiled forlornly and explained, "Tomorrow the Germans will attack."
He would have no further use for his coupons. He had no intention of retreat. This was his last supper.
For that soldier who died protecting my father and all the rest of us. For all the others I could never begin to name or even know of. For all those who stand the wall. Thank you.

Each year I taken my 3 sons to a temporary monument that is put up on Memorial Day at a local high school. It’s call the Field of Heros. As we walk we look at the names on the crosses and remember the sacrifice each has given for us. This year, by complete chance, we came upon the cross that represents Marc Alan Lee. My 11 year old loves the “Way of the Warrior Kid” books and grabbed me with tears in his eyes. “Dad look, it’s Marc Jocko’s Marc. I know it dad.” We stood there for a second in silence while we both contemplated Marc’s sacrifice. Then he said quietly“ Dad, we are so lucky that Grandpa came home.” Thank you to all those who gave their lives that we might live free!

I think @Trey M’s point was that these men and women paid the ultimate price that they were capable of paying. Of course Christ paid THE ultimate price. The least we can do is afford each other a bit of grace as we mourn and remember those who sacrificed all they could.

But I hate when I comment on stuff like this saying the same thing and people always say, “ what about Jesus?” Yes I get it but give these men and women their recognition. Wow! Most people think it is a celebration where you grill out and party. Well, I see it differently. My Dad is a Marine and went to Vietnam. I spent many nights sitting in his truck, when he used to drink, listening and watching him cry telling me stories about his brothers in his platoon. He would be talking to them at one moment and then the next second they were blown into pieces. This is a sad day! He taught us that this day was a day to honor the ones that lost their lives and to pray for the families of them. This isn't a party day!

So deeply felt and something so easy to understand. As I wake up on this day ( Memorial Day ) I cry watching and listening to Jocko and thinking about those I served with and all those I didn’t know that are no longer here! I will go to Parker crossroads in my home state and sit and talk to those before me and thank them for they service and sacrifice. I do this this because some do not. I’m thankful on this day to be alive, free, and live in a country I love 🇺🇸🙏🏼

Thanks Jocko. Over the past few months I've been doing my grieving of my own. Not a combat person though. A girl I had strong feelings for but it never worked out between us. A few months ago she died from a brain tumor and she was an only child. She was 28 years old, was engaged and was supposed to get married tomorrow to be honest if I'm not mistaken. She was kindhearted and sweet and did nothing but good in this world. She never hurt anyone. I can't tell you how much anger and confusion I've felt and still do about the whole thing. But this video right here helps put things in perspective for me. If only for a moment.

The tears I shed after listening to this was the smallest form of sacrifice I could have made for those that made that ultimate sacrifice. Thank you to all those soldiers who paid that price so that I could live under the umbrella of freedom of this great Country.

It really makes one think about how many lives and stories never get told when someone dies.
But also how many more lives get to tell their stories from one choosing to die at the right time.
