This really put me right back there. I served in the United States Army honor guard at Arlington national cemetery for several years. I can tell you the weight of these ceremonies is never lost on us, operational detachment is ever present to keep our discipline and composure, but every single time we marched between the rows of white stones to lay a fellow service member to rest in that sacred ground, we all felt that weight.
This had me emotional. Like General Patton said, it is foolish and wrong to mourn the men that died, rather we should thank God such men existed. I know that’s easier said then done. Defiant since 1776.
My Grandad died in 2019. He was a ranger in Vietnam. He inspired me to Join the Army as an Infantryman, and I served two tours in Iraq. I spoke at his funeral. I talked about looking up at the moon in Baqubah and thought about how he must have looked up at the same moon so many years ago in the central highlands. I pinned my CIB on his shirt the day before. He was the reason I had earned it. The Sergeant leading the funeral detail handed me the flag and spoke those same words. I must've moved him because under his military bearing I saw his eyes twitch and tears well. That flag sits in my bedroom now, above where I sleep. Next to it is the flag I was given when I was retired from the Army. I remember reading those same words on my retirement orders that were spoken to me by that Sergeant that June afternoon so few years ago. On behalf of a Grateful Nation

Beautiful. My husband (U.S. Army, 101st Airborne Div., Op. Iraqi Freedom) & I cried at the table while listening over breakfast. Tears streaked our faces with no sound, as we stared glassy eyed holding our forks. Every child & naive/ignorant person should have it described just like that -- the flag that carries a million souls -- why we stand at attention, why we salute, why we say the Pledge of Alligience, etc. Kids grow up hearing the word "sacrifice" to describe such things, without ever having sacrificed much of anything. It doesnt sink in...few actually get it. Paint the picture, break it down...just like this. To those who disagree, people dont have to like where we are or where we're going to appreciate/honor where we came from & what it took to get us here. 🙏🏼 Thank you, Jocko.
We buried my Brother as the Honor Guard held Old Glory aloft. We met during Chief Pretty Officer transition, having both been selected that year. To know him was to understand that his son was his entire purpose in life. That day, I also watched with my peripheral vision, maintaining my posture of attention, as his son was presented with that heavy, folded flag. As he squeezed his eyes shut to shoulder the pain, tears ran down my face and my heart felt like it was being ripped from my chest. We miss you Chris.

My neighbor was at Pearl, got a gun going when the attack happened. Had him over for dinner every week after his wife died and he went into assisted living. Many stories of his time in the Pacific. Bad. He passed two years back. Went to his funeral - kept it together until the "On behalf of a great full nation..." line.

Just can’t imagine. There are no words to say thank you enough. My father-in-law was on the first wave, Normandy Beach. 1 in 30 some out of 300 to survive. No words for what he saw or lost that day…his brothers. Came home full of shrapnel. Not positive how many Purple Hearts he received. Was misused in an orphanage and escaped at 8 years. Went back to rescue his sister and brothers. Succeeded, then found homes for them all. An outstanding Patriot does not give this man justice. To me, the heaviest flag bears the collective endeavors of our nation's history, souls of the people and future generation of visions and purpose. OG - She's the most beautiful representation of honor. Grown men weep at her very presence. Coupled with the Star Spangled Banner, OG dignifies sacrifice, purposed foundation of democracy and the graceful symbolization of pride. God Bless the United States
I was a bugler (see my profile pic) - I know for sure I played taps at least 600 times. There were 6 occasions where there was supposed to be a 2 man detail to fold and present the flag and there was only one, so I was pressed into service. Twice my lofty E-6 status meant that whatever SPC was there with me begged off as presenter. I can play taps - I'm a musician and it's my job. Presenting the flag made me turn to jelly on the inside. I did the best I could. I hoped I got the speech exactly right. Note, most of our presentations were for vets of WWII, Korea and Viet Nam.

Being apart of funeral detail, was one of the most honorable things I had the privilege to partake in during my time in service. That agony and torment stays with you forever.
As you read that it took me back to the day that same flag was presented to my mother when my father was buried. I will always remember the emotions that ran through me that day. Thank you Jocko for all that you have done and continue to do.

My heart breaks for those men and women who's last days were in battle... Even though I was denied entry into the military after my dad broke my collarbone in a fight when I was a kid..I would immediately sacrifice my own life if I knew it would bring back any soldier or POW... Maybe that seems vain, counter intuitive, or forsaking to the principles of how we gained freedom in the first place.. but my stagnant, crippled, lonesome, decaying, stubborn, life taken for granted far too long, realized only after it's far too late; Traded in for the rekindled companionship of any beloved hero makes all the sense in the world to me... It's still difficult for me to comprehend that this country had been formed by British colonists. 13 colonies (formerly known as British America) that had the courage to fight against the inquisitors. Brits who chose to oppose the Empire that conquered many lands. And they did win. By force. Happy 4th of July everyone :)
July 4th is technically about Independence from the British- Memorial Day is for remembering and grieving fallen soldiers in all their honor. No one really knows what American holidays are for anymore and it's quite sad. Veterans day is for honoring veterans. We need to make sure we take care of our veterans when they come home in a meaningful way, not just bullshit like 'thank you for your service' and putting a flag out.
Legit, as per usual. During my time in the Air Force I performed many full honors burials as part of my base Honor Guard team. These are moments that will be forever etched into my memory, and have helped shape me into who I am today. Thanks for holding the line, Jocko.
I'm ARNG Honor Guard, this got me thinking about the one funeral where the deceased was one of my buddies that we had to bury due to a lost mental health battle. It was the hardest funeral I've ever done honors for, but it was the one I volunteered for the fastest. I was the fold man for that one and another guy in my unit did the presentation of the flag to the loved ones.
The red for the blood that was shed The white for the tears that are shed The blue for all the sweat that is shed. In a time in my life where I find myself slowly doubting myself, and justifying complacency. Hearing this word for word brings back, having lost brothers and sisters of my corp in and off theater. Then reliving in my mind, having been in details to walk my fellow servicemen of a different time, but was honored to be apart of their final formation. This was that grab me by the collar and yell in my face, to get it together.

I have never been in any branch of the military. I have, however, been to a military cemetery in my area multiple times. And every time I have been there, I have had a sense of being on hallowed ground, with a tendency to remain as quiet as possible. Your video reminded me of the occasions I had been there, with the words spoken clearly and in total solemnity. It was an excellent addition to my marking of Independence Day 2022, and for that I am most grateful.
This provoked some of the most sincere and deep emotion that could be brought out of me. That honorable and terrible sacrifice is a heavy burden to bear. God bless our fallen, and America.
Good speech (seriously). I usually don't get very emotional about stuff, but yeah, I found myself tearing up. That being said, I think it's important to consistently question what we're fighting for. Fighting "for freedom" sounds great; fighting "for Halliburton" just...doesn't have the same feeling. Consistent, sincere questioning of our government/powers that be is one of the highest forms of genuine patriotism.

As part of the Ceremonial Unit and Honir Guard...the flag presentation I will never forget is the 1st time presenting a flag to a wife and 3 young kids...its etched into my mind because it was the 1st time presenting to someone the age of my wife and kids. It's the most heartbreaking and humbling part of my 12 years of service so far.
I have been present for two Army memorials for the fallen. One for a sergeant who I called a friend and one that I knew but was not close to. Never have been to a military funeral but I can tell you that memorial that my unit did for our fallen you can feel the pain for the lost of those soldiers.
From a tired old soldier; In Honor of all for which Old Glory flies as the sacred talisman and for all who gave that last full measure in Her Defense; Slow Hand Salute... and the tears run a river
When muster was taken, and all of the team was called, but the last one didn't roger up for the third time... Whatever happened back home afterwards I took it to heart. So thankful that any of the operations I supported never shed American blood. Fobbit as I was, this Sailor gave his God Damn all to make sure this ceremony never existed for any of the Soldiers he supported. I've been apart of the funeral detail. Brutal. Broke my heart.

I was honored to be on funeral detail while in AIT in the Army. This explain every feeling. Every thought. I didn't know some of my brothers and sisters we laid to rest but they were exactly that. Family. I've cried during some. I will always remember those we helped to heaven. That detail will be the most important, honorable thing I've ever done. I cried this entire video. I was on a few of these Burial details while in the 82nd at Bragg (77-81). I can sure remember that weight. The Units who are doing this at Arlington or anywhere, have all my respect.

I performed at least a dozen military funerals if not more. One in particular choked me up as the family, wife of the veteran made audible noises at each round of shots. After done, with me on a hill behind and to the right, I began playing. The first note and a loud scream in heartbreak rang out from the wife. Nearly couldn’t finish playing. It will bring the strongest to their knees.
My 1st 2 flags were may and June of 1972 my father and uncle. My brother in my arms in 91. Many many brothers and sisters since. Old glory is our only comfort of a life well lived for others.

I saw a documentary the other day called "Restrepo" (?). Horrible to watch. At one point a soldier is killed and one of his mates asks crying "is that him? Is that him?" His commander tells him to not look and walk away. It was heartbreaking. Truly fucking horrible. His voice was so full of fear and pain. So traumatizing for those kids. I know now many wars are bullshit. Who are we fighting? They killed so many Afghani who had nothing to do with the Taliban. Children too. It's in the documentary. The Afghani's are innocent too. America one the side is a great country. So many great people. Goodhearted people. True warriors. People fighting for a true cause. History is full of great Americans. Then there's the other side. One of the most evil and most horrible in the world. The only country to use two nukes. So many conflicts and wars waged out of self interest. For greed. You've now seen movies and documentary's where young people are persuaded to enlist to fight for "your country"and "freedom". Complete bullshit of course. Young men that are easily manipulated or that lack purpose in life are easy prey. Do presidents of the U.S ever truly cared about the young people that are being sent to war? How do you know that if you go to war you're truly fighting for a good cause? Can you trust the people in power at the top? Would they go fight side by side with you in combat? Times have changed. Most wars seem to be unnecessary. The people at the top in power are always fighting measuring dicks, meanwhile the average citizen does not want to fight let alone kill another human being. I understand a "grunt" is not supposed to ask too many questions or doubt his commanders, but I would ask as many questions as I can before I even consider going to war. How does the U.S treats it's veterans? So many things wrong. It's tragic if a young soldier dies in combat fighting for a righteous cause, but it's beyond horrible if he wasted his life, GAVE his life and left a grieving family behind over some bullshit.
Restrepo, is a heck of a documentary. It shows a differnt world, I’m not sure how I feel about it, it’s a bit life changing to be honest for the average person, it raises so many questions but also put things into perspective and seems so wrong. There is another documentary after Restrepo called Korengal, very similar, very real, very confusing, makes you think about life and what others have gone or are going through for us, and what really is important.
I encourage our GWOT vets to find and join a Memorial Team if possible. Most of the guys doing it now are Vietnam era and aren't getting any younger. I've been a part-time member of our VFW/AL Memorial Team for a few years now and it is well worth your time and effort. I'm usually on the rifle team but sometimes have a speaking role and it can be difficult even when I don't know the deceased or their family. But from the feedback we receive the service is always appreciated. The military doesn't have enough personnel to handle all veteran funerals and often only send 2 or 3 when they do.

As you read that it took me back to the day that same flag was presented to my mother when my father was buried. I will always remember the emotions that ran through me that day. Thank you Jocko for all that you have done and continue to do.
I love you Jocko.... & all of you tough ass warriors out there who gave your all fighting for this country & all our loved ones. My heart breaks for those men and women who's last days were in battle... Even though I was denied entry into the military after my dad broke my collarbone in a fight when I was a kid..I would immediately sacrifice my own life if I knew it would bring back any soldier or POW... Maybe that seems vain, counter intuitive, or forsaking to the principles of how we gained freedom in the first place.. but my stagnant, crippled, lonesome, decaying, stubborn, life taken for granted far too long, realized only after it's far too late; Traded in for the rekindled companionship of any beloved hero makes all the sense in the world to me... Thank you for all your talks & lessons Jocko.. You will always be appreciated.

It's still difficult for me to comprehend that this country had been formed by British colonists. 13 colonies (formerly known as British America) that had the courage to fight against the inquisitors. July 4th is technically about Independence from the British- Memorial Day is for remembering and grieving fallen soldiers in all their honor. No one really knows what American holidays are for anymore and it's quite sad. Veterans day is for honoring veterans. We need to make sure we take care of our veterans when they come home in a meaningful way, not just bullshit like 'thank you for your service' and putting a flag out.
Legit, as per usual. During my time in the Air Force I performed many full honors burials as part of my base Honor Guard team. These are moments that will be forever etched into my memory, and have helped shape me into who I am today. Thanks for holding the line, Jocko.

I'm ARNG Honor Guard, this got me thinking about the one funeral where the deceased was one of my buddies that we had to bury due to a lost mental health battle. It was the hardest funeral I've ever done honors for, but it was the one I volunteered for the fastest. I was the fold man for that one and another guy in my unit did the presentation of the flag to the loved ones.
Lost my buddy, a marine. Been a year but I miss him every day. I've never served but every day I thank those who have.
Thank you for your sacrifice, sir. I greatly appreciate your service.

In a time in my life where I find myself slowly doubting myself, and justifying complacency. Hearing this word for word brings back, having lost brothers and sisters of my corp in and off theater. Then reliving in my mind, having been in details to walk my fellow servicemen of a different time, but was honored to be apart of their final formation. This was that grab me by the collar and yell in my face, to get it together.
Deeply moving. God rest the souls of those valiant men who have departed this life. May God bless those who bear the scars of battle; both physical and psychological. And God bless you, Jocko Willink.

I have never been in any branch of the military. I have, however, been to a military cemetery in my area multiple times. And every time I have been there, I have had a sense of being on hallowed ground, with a tendency to remain as quiet as possible. Your video reminded me of the occasions I had been there, with the words spoken clearly and in total solemnity. It was an excellent addition to my marking of Independence Day 2022, and for that I am most grateful.
This provoked some of the most sincere and deep emotion that could be brought out of me. That honorable and terrible sacrifice is a heavy burden to bear. God bless our fallen, and America.

Good speech (seriously). I usually don't get very emotional about stuff, but yeah, I found myself tearing up. That being said, I think it's important to consistently question what we're fighting for. Fighting "for freedom" sounds great; fighting "for Halliburton" just...doesn't have the same feeling. Consistent, sincere questioning of our government/powers that be is one of the highest forms of genuine patriotism.

Yes there most-definitely are, we just don’t realize it because of what we see everyday. If you believe in America, our Constitution and the intrinsic human right of freedom you are among the faithful. I’m thankful for Americans of Jocko’s ilk, we all should be.
As part of the Ceremonial Unit and Honir Guard...the flag presentation I will never forget is the 1st time presenting a flag to a wife and 3 young kids...its etched into my mind because it was the 1st time presenting to someone the age of my wife and kids. It's the most heartbreaking and humbling part of my 12 years of service so far.
I have been present for two Army memorials for the fallen. One for a sergeant who I called a friend and one that I knew but was not close to. Never have been to a military funeral but I can tell you that memorial that my unit did for our fallen you can feel the pain for the lost of those soldiers.

When muster was taken, and all of the team was called, but the last one didn't roger up for the third time... Whatever happened back home afterwards I took it to heart. So thankful that any of the operations I supported never shed American blood. Fobbit as I was, this Sailor gave his God Damn all to make sure this ceremony never existed for any of the Soldiers he supported. I've been apart of the funeral detail. Brutal. Broke my heart.

I was honored to be on funeral detail while in AIT in the Army. This explain every feeling. Every thought. I didn't know some of my brothers and sisters we laid to rest but they were exactly that. Family. I've cried during some. I will always remember those we helped to heaven. That detail will be the most important, honorable thing I've ever done. I cried this entire video. But you do it because you have a duty. It takes a piece of you every time. I performed at least a dozen military funerals if not more. One in particular choked me up as the family, wife of the veteran made audible noises at each round of shots. After done, with me on a hill behind and to the right, I began playing. The first note and a loud scream in heartbreak rang out from the wife. Nearly couldn’t finish playing. It will bring the strongest to their knees.

I saw a documentary the other day called "Restrepo" (?). Horrible to watch. At one point a soldier is killed and one of his mates asks crying "is that him? Is that him?" His commander tells him to not look and walk away. It was heartbreaking. Truly fucking horrible. His voice was so full of fear and pain. So traumatizing for those kids.
I know now many wars are bullshit. Who are we fighting? They killed so many Afghani who had nothing to do with the Taliban. Children too. It's in the documentary.
The Afghani's are innocent too.
America one the side is a great country. So many great people. Goodhearted people. True warriors. People fighting for a true cause. History is full of great Americans.
Then there's the other side. One of the most evil and most horrible in the world. The only country to use two nukes. So many conflicts and wars waged out of self interest. For greed. You've now seen movies and documentary's where young people are persuaded to enlist to fight for "your country"and "freedom". Complete bullshit of course. Young men that are easily manipulated or that lack purpose in life are easy prey.
Do presidents of the U.S ever truly cared about the young people that are being sent to war?
How do you know that if you go to war you're truly fighting for a good cause? Can you trust the people in power at the top?
Would they go fight side by side with you in combat?
Times have changed. Most wars seem to be unnecessary.
The people at the top in power are always fighting measuring dicks, meanwhile the average citizen does not want to fight let alone kill another human being.
I understand a "grunt" is not supposed to ask too many questions or doubt his commanders, but I would ask as many questions as I can before I even consider going to war. How does the U.S treats it's veterans? So many things wrong.
It's tragic if a young soldier dies in combat fighting for a righteous cause, but it's beyond horrible if he wasted his life, GAVE his life and left a grieving family behind over some bullshit.
Restrepo, is a heck of a documentary. It shows a differnt world, I’m not sure how I feel about it, it’s a bit life changing to be honest for the average person, it raises so many questions but also put things into perspective and seems so wrong. There is another documentary after Restrepo called Korengal, very similar, very real, very confusing, makes you think about life and what others have gone or are going through for us, and what really is important.

I encourage our GWOT vets to find and join a Memorial Team if possible. Most of the guys doing it now are Vietnam era and aren't getting any younger. I've been a part-time member of our VFW/AL Memorial Team for a few years now and it is well worth your time and effort. I'm usually on the rifle team but sometimes have a speaking role and it can be difficult even when I don't know the deceased or their family. But from the feedback we receive the service is always appreciated. The military doesn't have enough personnel to handle all veteran funerals and often only send 2 or 3 when they do.
