I have a couple classic Rhythm machines from this era of drum machines meant to compliment home organs. The Roland TR-77 and the Hammond AutovVari-64. Even most of the simple classic machines from that era are really nice. Most can combine and get those poly-rhythms you showed here. They can definitely bring a sonic edge to your tracks. Many are easy to retrofit to midi input to control the different instruments, and if you don't want to mod your vintage gear, there are units out there that allow you to feed in audio and create a clock pulse to interface with modern gear. I run my TR-77 thru a clock generator, into a Korg Monologue and not only do they play in sync, the Monologue outputs midi clock to sync up any modern midi gear, all from the TR-77. I just have to live with the tempo adjustment of the vintage unit. If you see one of these in a pawn shop or estate sale, grab one before the prices start to skyrocket.
The Rhythm Ace was actually used on Arthur Brown's fantastic album "Journey" (Kingdom Come). He's got a new show which is just a wonderful energetic, creative experience :). One could only wish to have his energy at half the age!
Actually this is Roland's 2nd Drum machine, The Ace Tone Rhythm Ace FR-1 is the original ;) Lmk if you guys want to borrow mine to make a video of it. Keep the vids coming, love them!
Anyone aware of any software or plugins that can give you a virtual version of these drum machines? Not talking about a sample pack, but software that allows you to do everything that this drum machine does. There are so many virtual emulations of specific synths, but something that emulates a vintage analog drum machine like this seems weirdly difficult to find.
I don't know if you still have this, but your latin rhythms are missing some sounds (like Claves). Beguine especially is lacking sound, and rumba. Might just be the decay settings (there's a trimmer for them), but could be the diode matrix for triggering the sounds.
There are all kinds of issues with it, however, it still "works". I've planned on opening the machine for quite some time now - thanks for the reminder!

Another classic! Appreciate the video here, as it's not a piece of equipment I've looked into beyond a cursory glance. 👍
@@asoundlab That's awesome, I'll be eager for that follow up!
The Latin rhythms are still very usable. Foxtrot sped up would be superb for deep house music :)
