Tip from a guy who still owns a Maestro Rhythm King purchased over 35 years ago: you can get two or maybe three of the preset buttons to lock in place at the same time. Some surprises await you.
As a *very* amateur jazz pianist the fact that you covered The Girl From Ipanema as your “go to” when you heard that bossa nova brought a big smile to my face! Great fun on the whole clip. I also never knew Kraftwerk would have used such a box, too. But I hear it now!
Sly Stone + MRK = Magic. It's all over his "Fresh" album. Wish you had gotten funky with it like he used to on a pianet/clavinet and organ, I know you could!

awesome. I grew up messing with the rhythms built into my grandma's Hammond organ, and so I've been in love with these corny old rhythm sections since, oh, 1985 or so when I realized I could push in MORE THAN ONE BUTTON and combine the beats into new, funky combinations. Elevator music machines are pretty much the best drum machines out there, if you ask me.
@@robfriedrich2822 never peeked in. Probably digitally controlled analog, had 15-some preset sounds, some polyphony as I could play triplets and melody. Drum kit could not be manually played in any way I knew. I had it between 86 and 89, and it was already second hand.
ok so this rhythm box is actually recreating genre accurate beats! Which is rare for beat machines for so many years until recent years. I would have loved to meet the programmer for this thing. Not too many home organ style beat makers were this rhythm genre accurate! Nice!
he was wearing red shirts for years- just to wear the right thing when a sudden Kraftwerk song appears out of a 60 year old box. Now that is dedication!
The combination of your phenomenal keyboard skills and ever-present smile make this a joy to watch! Loved your covers of Girl from Ipanema and Neon Lights!
When you installed the Maestro Rhythm, I strongly wish that you played the Girl from Ipanima, and precisely what you played, you thought the same song. i LOVE
I absolutely love these old analog machines, even the preset ones. I have an Auto-Vari 64 and a Roland TR-77. The 77 has faders for some of the instruments like Kick and Snare so you can drop them out and bring them back in in real time (think Genesis Duke Suite live.) Run them thru FX like compressors, distortions, delays and reverbs, and anything you can think of. triplet delays are really cool with drum machines. The best thing about these analog machines, that you can only get in hardware is that you can push multiple presets at the same time for way more combinations of beats and patterns. Sure you can run two or more instances in your DAW, but the immediacy of the hardware controls is like the difference in programming a Minimoog vs a Roland D-50. The retro sound/vibe is tough to beat. There is even a pedal that takes the audio in, and converts it out to midi clock, so you can use these machines to drive/sync modern gear.
That reminds me on the Farfisa-organ we had at home... The rhythmic-sounds were all made with transistors and these days... Was from mid 70s, i think, the organ...
This reminds of me of my great grandmother's Baldwin organ. I used to be SO freakin' bored at her house, I'd just spend all day cycling through the drum machine on it.
Another great video! Thanks. I'm not sure Maestro Rhythm King was used in Phil Collins' In the Air Tonight. But my ears believe this babe was used in Blondie's Heart of Glass and George McCrae's Rock Your Baby. Also the sample was used at the beginning of Garbage's I'm only happy when it rains.👍🤘🎶
Majestic and very smooth. I seriously doubt, there are many computer programs, out there that can do what the rhythm king can without alot of updates. Very nice.
Yes , in the past i had a Fricke MFB 501 and i have done the same like Kraftwerk. I took some selvadhesive foampads coverd them in the Alufoil grab the hugest knitting needles from my mother and then lets jam. It was so much fun ! BTW. my Mother was very angry about the knitting needles because i have to make the cables on them .
I remember these drum boxes, usually the man at the bar or pizza place was using one. I was probably two or 4 years old. The times were calmer, people having chats without looking at their phones, telling stories. People used to socialize. An art lost i. time since new generations can't hold a conversation today. It was later on when something like the Roland R8 came and the Rolans D50 and then the M1 and the revolution started. You could find those drum boxes collecting dust in basements, trashed later, given to the poor.
Brings forth some memory when I was a monitor guy, live on stage. I'm thinking rad that sound gets digitally digital, and maybe do a video where you have a plastic tube zip tied next to your mic. You know, analog, for posterity.
*MAMBO* preset on a MRK2 was used on *"Everybody want to lives toghether" by **#TimmyThomas* (sure blended with another Preset at the same time), wow what a discovery! Thanks Doctor
Hey There! Great Video. It sounds a lot like the drum machine included in console organs in the 1960's and 1970's. Also really close to Heart of Glass by Blondie. Can I ask what piano sound you used on the Neon Lights?
reminds me of my yamaha home organ from the 70s. basically the same, just a few more rhythms on the Maestro. But it's a Maestro, it should do more than a yamaha organ xD

I was just about to ask is there any chance of you doing a sample pack... Thank you !!
I'm getting a 403 error message 🤔

the moog sounds so THICK
I love that it looks like a cross between a Fender amp head and an 80s boombox!
The rhythms of this rhythm machine are very classical, but you played such beautiful melodies on it that I listened with appreciation❤❤
Your enthusiasm is so infectious! Loved your rendition of Neon Lights.
The Neon Lights arrange is absolutely amazing!!!

Probably my favorite video by you! Really nice playing with an interesting drum machine. And the Neon Lights-cover was so beautiful. Thank you.
Besame Mucho!!!!!!! loved it! The groove on these retro Drum Machines make you want to jam 🙂
You play very nice ,sound vintage gold

The Bontempi keyboard I had as a pre-teen had very similar drum sounds and rhythm patterns.
