I think the bizarre brilliance of a lot of these “too happy/too sad” videos is that even though on the surface they may just seem funny because of the seeming clash between the lyrical content and the emotional sound, of you scratch a little deeper, it starts to seem that the lyrics actually resonate meaningfully in this new context. Like, this song as a call to gay men in the 70s who may have felt lost or struggled, as a beacon of hope, now rendered through the filter of someone who feels hopeless, hearing someone say “you can get yourself clean” (stop your drug habits and self destructive ways) and have a good time with the boys (be yourself, accept yourself). Idk, weirdly and unexpectedly powerful?
Such a weird feeling having this video recommended to me, scrolling through the comments, nodding along to this one like, “Huh, yeah, I guess you can see it that way” and then realizing this comment was me 2 fucking years ago.
Oh, my, Those synths reminded me of some Pink Floyd stuff. It is just beautiful. Can't recall the right song. Maybe Welcome To The Machine... Just amazing. Great work, guys!
Love it when you put your own spin on popular songs. You make them sound current and not just some "floor filler" at family parties that you nan drags you up to dance to!
What I absolutely love about these guys is not just their pure talent, but how creative they are. Completely reinventing a song takes a huge amount of skill and to execute it well takes even more. Top drawer guys! Keep it up :)
When you're happy, you understand the music When you're sad, you understand the lyrics Me and the quarantine boys 🎵it was fun to stay at the Y... Y... why? Why!! Oh, God why?🎵
I love your phrasing on this one. YMCA is such an established song that it really caught me when you stretched a word and added some space. The guitar playing is on point as usual.
You guys are a trip!! My first viewing had me cracking up, comparing to original! Second play I listened with new ears, and realized, this is freakin' fantastic! Who does this?? The Melodika Bros of course!! Love love love it!
After years of not watching you videos, when I started watching your new ones, I made the mistake of thinking a contrasted cover made by you would be impossible and sound weird, but it's not. It's incredibly beautiful.
Local radio show Rumble in the Morning played this tune a couple days ago. I hadn't heard it yet, but the vocals were unmistakable. Tight cover, as usual.
For me it sounds like sarcastically singing about an experience in a cult or a concentration camp, when you were promissed everything, but it turned out to be suffering
It sounds like the YMCA is closed due to the pandemic and he's singing about how much he misses being there
Nailed it.
big oof
Yes, yes it does
yup, longing for those days you go

Young Men Commit Arson
At least he has his brother, in these parlous times.
The saddest version says: "Is fun to stay at the Y..Y.. why? WHY!!!!! oh god why?"
When it gets to that part of the song the vibe switched to Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd.

Jeez. Way to remind me of all the people I lost during the AIDS crisis.
From now on I'll be way too sad when people don't play this version
Every time I read a video title and think "That sounds so silly," it turns out legitimately beautiful. How do you guys do that?? 😄
Magic.
Look out Matt Mulholland's piano version of I'm blue, shows that the song is actually pretty sad, despite being so upbeat in the original.
Exactly
I used to work at a YMCA...this version fits the mood better than the original.
I can't explain how it messed up with my feelings... Am I sad? Do I wanna dance?
You could do both with a peformative dance or something.
hahahaha

That's the only version of that song I want to hear from now on!
I recommend also T.I.M.E. by Neil Cicierega
Would love a Way Too Sad version of Footloose! Or maybe Girls Just Wanna Have Fun?
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun could be awesome! Maybe it's collab material!
I believe the original version is more sad than Cyndi's version. The lyrics are already dark.
Actually schmoyo or the gregory brothers did one of those (it might not be a full length one, tho)

It begs so hard to be happy... and that makes it sadder.
