As long as the electrical current is disrupted, it clears the error message. This is great because I paid the Toyota dealership to figure this out the last time it happened. I hadn't screwed the gas cap on tight enough. Luckily they only charged me $100 not the usual $200 diagnostic.

The first time it happened I took it to the Toyota dealership and they couldn't figure out what caused it. They said they thought that maybe I didn't twist the gas cap completely when I filled my tank, and got air in the line, and that triggered the warning message. But they weren't even sure. A waste of $200. So glad I can take care of it myself, thanks to this video.

I bought a used 2017 xle awd 2 weeks ago with 30K miles and this message just popped up. I've only added 700 miles on the car. Might've popped up on my car due to the gas cap not being tightened all the way, but I will try this before going to the dealership. Thanks for sharing!
Update: this worked like a charm like others who have tried. I hope I don't have the issue again and I will make sure the gas cap is on securely next time I fill up incase that trigged the issue.

My dealer are such crooks I don’t want to bring the vehicle in there, would rather go to an independent mechanic who’s honest.
Ok. This does work. I reset my Rav4 several times. The same fault message would occasionally pop up and always at first start in the morning. I took it to the dealer, they just cleared the code the first time and after a couple of months the message re-appeared (again- 1st start in the morning). I took it back to the dealer and this time they are replacing the charcoal canister filter. The young technician in the shop asked the older seasoned mechanic in the shop "Can this be right?" He said "Yes, he's seen it fix the problem a couple of times." We shall see.

Yeah, but what caused the message? And is disconnecting the battery just clearing the code and not solving the potential mechanical problem? I would feel more comfortable having a seasoned professional hook up a scan tool on it and do a full diagnostics.

Probably already figured this out, you left your socket set inside the engine bay. Also, power cycling the ecu is a temporary repair, not a solution. Any updates to the problem? Is it still happening? Was this a cold weather issue?
I replaced the battery and worked great for about 10 days. Came back again. both times it started with check engine quickly followed by the AWD error. still no fix.
I went to the dealership to pick up my Rav and they accidentally left the light on so the battery was drained when I tried to start it that code came up. They jump started it and no more code.
I am getting this message every weekend now....then, after 3 days...gone. I tried to tighten up the gas cap ( heard from many that is the cause ), but this is getting annoying now.
This light just came on my dash also, we just got back from vacation and stopped and got gas in New Jersey where they have to pump the gas ! The guy who pumped the gas didn’t ,screw the gas cap back on ? it was just hanging there when I opened the compartment . I screwed the gas cap back on and unplugged the negative connector on my battery for 5 min put it back on and the warning on dash is gone ! Can’t believe the guy was so careless not to screw the gas cap back on ? Wtf? Always check utube for anything gone wrong cause there’s probably a video on how to fix it !!
There is solution for this problem, what I did simply , i brought code reader to check is it bank1 or bank2 ( since there is 2 catalytic converters in rav4 ) then i went to some place they helped me to clean the catalytic converter ( i hade issue with the catalytic bank1 ) and that was extremely clean so the problem was from the sensor Guys just change the sensor if you did all that things above and problem will be solved 👌
I just did what you did but only for the positive I can’t get the negative out I have a longer screw, turned on my car, it loads and it cleared the check engine light message. But not big question, is it still malfunctioning ? Or we just did a trick to clear the lights
😂 doing that was good enough to save some money temporarily , but it's not gonna solv the problem , well after reading one of your comments talking about this check engine coming back every 2 days or something , i think you have a problem with the evaporator lines , a leak or P0420 for a low catalytic converter efficiency , good luck anyway
That not going to solve the problem, it only resets the computer. After the car running about 30 miles it will pop-up again. You have to replace the new sensor bank1 and 2 to fixed permanent.
@@BroEmmanVideos I installed an Android Headunit, and played around with it for days, not starting the car (2017 RAV4 LE). Out of the blue, the Headunit shut down and this error appeared, and the car wouldn't start. I'm hoping I ran the battery down. Will try your "solution" and charge up the battery in the meantime. Will be back.
Battery was low, charged it up for an hour, brought back to 12.6 volts, reconnected battery terminals, started up like a champ, no error code. So far, so good. Thanks for the video. If you have an Android Headunit, be careful. It may draw a lot more current than you think.
I took it to the dealer, they said there was rodent damage to wiring. They performed system diagnostic. They said they repaired wires and test drove to verify operation. The problem went away , but came back again in 2 days.. Now the dealer says they could have missed a wire. What the hell is happening here? They charged me $387.00!

That's is just to reset the computer, it will come back up after 10 miles again. It not going to fix the problem.

This message popped today on my 2018 rav4. I am days away of going out of town and I am so bummed this happened, will try this trick.

And yes, you only have to disconnect one of the battery terminals for a couple of minutes (not both) to reset.

I just removed both cables for 10 min and put back on and still getting message. I'll have to most likely replace battery or jump it.
This also fixed an issue I had with my sos and power doors not working!
I did it and IT worked for a while then the 2WD Locked light repapered again, about way the 4WD will not work if locked the 2WD is on
