  • @JenAmazed42

You don't use plastic in moonshining. Those milk jugs were for hauling water from the creek to the house. Many folks lived without indoor plumbing and when they did get "city water" in the house, they did not like the taste. So they continued hauling their drinking water from the creek, stream, branch or well. Thats why they kept the milk jugs, kept them clean and up high so theyd stay clean

He was a truly a national treasure.
A fiercely independent and unique man, a human being that should be doubly valued in today's society.
He had already done his last batch and it should have been left at that.
He was a connection with history in his life-style, and he is not only a tragic loss to his own country, but to all of humanity.

Popcorn Sutton said several times He was the last of the "Moonshiners".
Popcorn said that not to be boastful, but to draw the attention away from the hundreds of other moonshiners throughout the mountains, river bottoms and swamps of this once great nation.
There was once a time that if a family didn't make corn liquor they would starve before spring.
Corn by the bushel was .10 cents or corn liquor by the quart jar was $5.00 if it was worth drinking.
Besides homemade medicine made from corn liquor is ten times better that what we buy from the drug store or Walmart.

Ida Knownbetta Honey was used to soothe the throat. Lemon for the Vitamin C.
      Peppermint for the nasal passages.
Not that hard candy like Life Savers, but those soft peppermint sticks like Red Bird or Bob's that melts as soon as it touchs the the mouth.
I always making a quart of that ever September.
Now days some state governments make their own corn whiskey to sell, but that stuff never has the proof that home made stuff has.
Last fall I thought about using that new Tim Smith's recipe from the TV, but I can buy Georgia Moon for half the price.
Some people claim they have used turpentine in their recipe/medicine, but I would never try that.
Might as well try to make a tea out of pine combs and rich pine knots.

Popcorn was a legend while alive and still is today. He inspired many men to experience the true art of making great likker. I was one of those men. Many were better than I but I don't believe many enjoyed doing it any more than I did. It was fun while it lasted. Every life chapter has an ending, at least mine didn't end in feds and death, and for that I'm thankful. Everyone loved what I made, I always said there was love in every jar, and at least 2 fights . lol. Ice cold from the freezer or straight from the jar at an event was just as tasteful. I miss those days , I'm older, wiser, and retired but I still like to taste others "product" . I've handed sheriffs and distillers a jar on occasion, and been called good. That never mattered. Watching the look on thier face when they took a taste, and seeing the smile of appreciation by the elders who taught me was worth it all. I would do it again. I hope someday that the grandkids will ask me if I'm still here to teach them. I will. See ya later 🍿 popcorn. He was the best.

Doubt that's his "homeplace". He was born in Maggie Valley. He died at his home in Tennessee. I don't know how long he lived there but quite a while. From what I have heard he is buried on his property there, not in NC. He died in his Ford Fairmont, not a truck. My brother met him once in Maggie Valley at one of those little stores on the tourist route thru there. I believe at one time he may have owned a sort of antique store himself. My brother said he was a nice fellow. Wish I could have tasted some of his shine. They say it was the best.

I grew up near that area and seeing this video of the woods and how green all the grass and overgrowth is,makes me miss home! The southwestern desert region, where I live now is pretty in its own right, but very bare in comparison. The way that old shed is built right on top of the slope is no accident. When finished, you always had the option of another room below, with the basic parts already in place. All you had to do was close it in. Those old milk jugs hanging there, and what they are is very common and easily recognized to an old country boy like me, from that area! They're for setting up floating "trot lines".
The jugs obviously for floats, but also served as storage for extra bait after checking & resetting, but also for identifying its owner, to avoid confusion, as most other folks used the same type jugs also. I think it's actually required by game mgmt to.

My mother had a house in Waynesville around the bend from Maggie Valley. We would go to the "Maggie Valley Restaurant" AKA Carvers all the time. It an institution in the Valley since 1952. I was lucky enough to meet Popcorn. They had Postcards with Popcorns Story and Picture. One day i picked it up looked at it. Looked a guy in the corner eating pie. Back and forth. Then it hit me it was Popcorn ! I was a teenager.I walked over and asked if the guy on the Postcard was him ? In a Sort of honorary way he said " Why you the Feds" And we both giggled. He told me a dirty joke. I had to leave. My mother had already paid the bill and was heading to the car. He was Cool as you would imagine him to be. I feel lucky to have had some of his time. This was 1990 or 91. R.I.P Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton. Good Vibes 👣
