Learn how to house train a dog or puppy in this video tutorial.
Dog Potty Training Rule #1: Months Old = Hours Your Puppy Can Hold Their Bladder
An 8 week old puppy can roughly hold their bladder for 2 hours MAYBE 3 at an absolute maximum.
It is very important to understand that it’s not physically possible for an 8 week old puppy to hold their bladder for 6 or 7 hours.
The general rule for is that for how ever many months old your puppy is, he can hold his bladder for that many hours.
A 3 month old puppy can hold it for 3 hours.
A 4 month old puppy can hold it for 4 hours, etc.
It is very important to have a realistic expectation for how long your dog can actually go without having to relieve themselves
Dog Potty Training Rule #2: Reward With 3 Treats, Not Just 1
Every time your puppy or dog goes to the bathroom outside we want to reward him.
Every time that something good happens to your puppy after he has done something, the more likely your puppy will repeat that behavior in hopes that that good thing will occur again.
This is the key to house training.
We want our dog to learn that going to the bathroom outside is the greatest thing in the world!
A very simple way to do this is to use a very high value food reward that your dog only gets after he has gone to the bathroom in the correct place.
Reserve the dog treats for your other training - potty training rewards need the be the BEST treats your dog has ever had.
Tiny pieces of chicken, steak, cheese, or hotdogs work wonderful.
But remember, these treats are a reward ONLY for house training.
If you use them too often, they will lose their value and that is not what we want to have happen.
Immediately after your dog has finished going to the bathroom, you are going to give him 3 treats in a row rapid fire style.
The dog has just finished peeing, so you give him a treat and he eats it.
The second he swallows that one, you give him another.
After the second one is gone you give him one last treat.
Not only does your dog learn that pooping and peeing outside gets him the greatest treats ever, but this is the only time he ever gets THREE treats in a row!
This is a great little trick to use to speed up the house training process.
What To Do When Your Puppy Has An Accident
How you react when your puppy or dog has an accident ( and you SHOULD expect accidents) has an enormous impact on how successful you will be in house training your dog.
First, here is a list of things NOT TO DO when your puppy has an accident:
    Rub their nose in it
    Tell them “bad dog”
    Hit them
    Put them in timeout
    Roll them on their side
Grab them by the back of the neck
If you do ANY of these things in the list above, not only will you make the house training process LONGER, but you will also be teaching your dog to fear you which we don’t want.
Please avoid any of the techniques on the above list at all costs.
Anyone telling you to do any of those things is about 30 years behind in the current research.
So now that you know what NOT to do, what DO we do when we see that our puppy has had an accident?
If you don’t catch your puppy in the act, you just walk into a room and you notice a pile of poop and your dog is no where to be seen, then there is nothing you can do but clean it up.
Dogs live in a very fast paced world, and you need to give them feedback within two seconds of a behavior or they have no idea what that feedback is for.
The two second rule is a very important part of dog training in general, but really comes into play with house training.
So unless you catch your dog in the act of going to the bathroom inside, there is nothing that you can do.
Getting angry with your dog after they have already had an accident will only teach your dog that “humans get angry when they see poop or pee, so I better hide it next time and make sure I don’t go when they are around.”
It is very important that when your dog does have an accident you clean it up the proper way.
There is an enzyme in dog urine that attracts dogs to come back to the same spot to go to the bathroom.
If you don’t destroy this enzyme when you clean up accidents, your dog will continue to go back to the same spot because he can still pick up on the scent.
The best clean up spray that every puppy owner should have is Nature’s Miracle House Training Spray because it is the only thing that completely destroys the enzymes in the urine.
Use that spray after every accident to make sure you are breaking down the enzymes that only dogs noses can detect.
You now know that if you don’t catch your dog in the act of having an accident, then there is nothing that you can do.

My five month old Shih Tzu was easy to potty train. Brought him home at eight weeks. I took his water away at 6 pm every night. Got up every am at 5:30, took him out to potty. Taught him to use puppy bells I ordered from Wal Mart. He caught on real fast. Took him out at the top of every hour saying “potty potty”. At the end of seven days, he was on to the routine. I never did have to take this puppy outside during the night. He slept, all night. Once I gave him back his water bottle and fed him breakfast, played with him and tired him out, he was again grated. He uses the potty bells every time he has to poo. Sometimes he pees on the floor and that is my fault for not watching. I am retired and home to train the dog and that makes a difference. The puppy pads work good for working people. Consistency is the key to training puppies. It is not easy but he will not be a puppy forever. What works for one may not work for another. Taking the water away at night will not harm the dog and helps tremendously.

I agree ... but, like you, I put my puppies on a potty ritual, also, and I was working! But, I always had their attention ... I had direct eye contact with them, from the first day I got them, at 8 weeks. I think that they thought that I was their mother, I mean like their dog mom. One puppy, actually, caught onto anything that I trained them for ... and the other one would, actually, look away from me, to see what this one was doing, and copy him, so that he could get the treats, too ... it was so cute. My children would laugh, when he did that! My oldest daughter would say that he, finally, caught onto why his brother would get treats, and he wasn’t/didn’t. Oh, and I don’t like crates, either ... I see it as animal abuse. #myopinion

I’m getting a Scottie puppy for Christmas 2018. I’ll pick him up on 12/22! I have watched tons of videos for the last two months. This has been the most clear and most helpful! I work from home and rarely leave so crating has been confusing to my situation. The “pen” makes much more sense and the explanation of the pee pads is the best I’ve heard yet. I like that it is a temporary thing that gradually goes away. Thanks for sharing this info. I now feel much more confident and ready for our new family member this week!

I actually had a puppy once that only ever had one accident. Got Bonniebear at the Dallas SPCA back in 1993, she was a 10 week old Chow Mix, sign on her cage said "house trained" I figured it was a lie just to promote her adoption. Well, right away she would always go to the door when she needed to go. The only time she ever peed in the house was about a month after we got and my wife placed a bunch of dry cleaning on the bed. For some reason, she was afraid of the dry cleaning and started barking at it, I walked over and picked up the dry cleaning and playfully shook it, she yelped and ran down the hall leaving a little trail of pee behind her. She was a great dog and passed away at age 15 in 2008, still miss her every day.

I have an 12 weeks old puppy that will hold it all night, so pee outside first thing in the morning and the rest of the day is a free for all no matter how many times you take her outside she will pee and poop right infront of you right after she comes inside !! She's also a climber so putting her in a playpen wasn't working. Maybe a pen with a roof !!

Thank you so much! Finally an “expert” who agrees that crate training is cruel for the animal. I think his second option is perfect. And he’s right - most of us have full time jobs. I refuse to put my dog in a crate all day. Right or wrong I’ve used pee pads for my dog as an adult. I had a job that was an hour commute so I was gone 10-11 hours every week day. No way did I expect her to hold it that long. It’s unrealistic and it’s cruel. So she would use a peep pad. 90% of the time she used it. The occasional mistake was worth the piece of mind to me. Now that I have a different job much closer to home, it’s not as much of an issue. I still leave a pad down. Most days she doesn’t need it but occasionally she does. And that is perfectly fine with me. She has free reign of the house because she has proven that she can be trusted. I’m very lucky to have a dog that doesn’t have separation anxiety. She seems to understand that I have to leave every morning and I always come back in the afternoon. Anyway, back to my original point. I’m glad there are trainers like this man who agree that there is a better alternative to crate training. Besides, let’s be honest, who wants to get out of bed every 2-3 hours to take their puppy out? Not even every 4-5 hours is realistic when you live alone and have to get up for work every morning.

Crates are great tools and every dog should be okay using one in case of travel or emergencies but you can’t abuse any tool. No dog should be crated for long periods of time. I have a two hour maximum. My puppy is on a three hour schedule. One hour of exercise, training, dog/dog play and socialization, followed by a two hour nap. I do five of these sessions per day starting at 6 am. A pee break at midnight and then a six hour sleep at night. This provides 18 hours of rest per day for a 7-8 week old puppy. As the puppy grows I lengthen the exercise and decrease the nap time. Every hour (to an hour and a half) exercise session starts and ends with a potty break before going back into his crate.
By giving food, physical and mental exercise and rest on a very consistent schedule, the puppy’s body adapts and he potty trains quite quickly and I can fade the crate out by six months. An accident happens very rarely. I still use the crate occasionally just to keep the dogs familiar with it but I have a small house and fairly large dogs (labs) so I don’t want big crates everywhere. I am blind and I raise and train my own guide dogs so my scheduling and training has to be very on point to get the results I need. And I’ve found that this works very well.

I have heard all of these before EXCEPT the 3 high quality treat method. I was just using typical training treats I also used for all obedience training and when I switched to cooked chicken or hotdogs (no nitrates, non cured) my 4 month old puppy really took notice. I left the "potty treats" in a special container outside and that has made potty breaks a special occasion for her.

Great philosophy! I have had dogs for over 50 years and have always successfully trained them with the "outside and treats" method coupled with the "gated area and pee pads" method (only when they were left alone.) . I agree that "crate training" often gets abused (as does the dog being left in there!) If your carpet or floor are more important to you than the well-being of your pet, then please do not own a pet. "Our dog is a big part of our life, but we are our dog's ENTIRE life." Let it be a beautiful, love-filled one for all involved.

I recently trained my new Chihuahua puppy to use a litter box. As I purchased a 24 X 18 wire doggy crate and stuck a doggy bed, a doggy blanket, and some doggy toys inside it. At the same time, I also bought a 24 X 18 solid plastic container with high sides.
Then using a hack saw, I cut an opening on one side of it big enough for a chihuahua to enter and exit it with ease. I then filled the bottom of that plastic container with one inch of pine pellets to make it my new doggy litter box.
Then with the puppy inside the doggy crate, I butted the litter box entrance to the door of the doggy crate. As the idea was the puppy would sleep and play in the doggy crate and then would eliminate in the litter box and it worked like a charm.
As this was by far the easiest and fastest way I have ever potty trained a puppy and it was also the first time I did it without having not one puppy mistake inside the house whatsoever. In fact, the best part about this method is the puppy literally trains itself.
Meanwhile, using a litter box means I don't have to worry about maintaining a schedule to let the puppy out. I don't have to worry about whether it is snowing or raining or whether it is freezing or too hot outside. I don't have to worry about leaving the puppy alone for extended periods of time. I also don't have to worry about fleas, ticks, or my puppy picking up a disease another dog left behind.
Had I realized the convenience of using a litter box sooner, I would have been using them a lot sooner. Not to mention that there is no faster, better, or easier way to potty train a dog than the method I described above.
Lastly, the pine pellets are not only odorless, but if you use a sifting cat litter box as an aid to clean your doggy litter box, it makes cleaning your doggy litter box a snap.

I’ve been using both methods for my 4 month old puppy. She holds her bladder for about 8 hours and gets up around 6 or 7 am. It took her about a month to properly crate train with very very few accidents. I started off by picking her up and taking her out to her Gate runner and that is where she would have free range. That method does start to smell after a period of time, especially in enclosed areas. But now that she has all her shots enough to be outside she is getting leashed trained to go out and is kenneled periodically during the day.

Thank you very much for your videos. I have been watching them all day. I'm apprenticing to become a dog trainer as well and always try to broaden my knowledge base. My mentor is a dominance trainer, and while I do learn a lot under him, I find many of his training techniques to be dated. It's a breath of fresh air to see a more modern approach to dog training. It's even better to find a trainer I almost completely agree with. Thank you very much for the informative videos!

When my puppy first arrived, I started using the Gate training with the crate attached, I put several pee pads on, and I.put his bed inside the attached crate… It didn't work at all, he was doing his business only on the areas not cover with pee pads so I had to switch to Crate training, I am using the one with the divider (bed/bath) and he is doing his business only on the pee pad inside the."bathroon" area, but if we bring him in the kitchen, he will poo or pee weherever and not on the pee pad we put in the kitchen.
I live in FL so is very important he learns to use the pee pad inside the house since we have heavy rains and storms frecuently and we can't take our dogs outside.

Thanks for the advice on how to potty train without needing a crate, it is illegal to confine dogs in crates where I am, and I would never want to do so anyway. I will be getting a puppy in August and will try out the pads method.

Great training video I totally agree puppies need to be able to run and play, have their toys and just have fun. I like the idea of having a play pen I think I will do crate for weeks later introduce a play pen so then she knows outside is the preferred place to go and I have the go go bell so I want her to know that the bell and going outside potty get's instilled. I have read some dogs are able to ring the bell and get potty trained in a week I hope my pup is quick learner

Love the playpen "gate method". It allows me to keep an eye on the sweet pups yet lets them play and wrestle. Any ideas on training them to let you know when they need to go? The bell method on the playpen doesn't work because they treat it like a toy. Appreciate your help!

Thank you for your organized and clear headed presentation style, Alex! And all the empathy toward the pups is palpable in your video. What if my 4 month old miniature pinscher-chihuahua puppies have figured out how to climb out of the pen? Does that mean they're too old for the pen? Or do we continue to find a way to keep them in there at night? Past few nights they've slept peacefully on the bed with us, but I'm worried we've "ruined" them :) Is there a way to fix this? (3 puppies, all same litter)

I was between jobs when I got a German Shepard/Border Collie cross pup given to me.He was 8 weeks old. From the very first moment I got him,I took him out side every 15-20 minutes.Within 24 hours and from then on,he was whining to go outside himself.I never actually trained him at all,it wasn't necessary. He was smart enough to figure it out.He never peed inside and the few times he was caught short later on with me at work,he would take a dump on the laundry room concrete floor. He would guiltily lead me to it when I got home.Same dog put the bounce on black bears on 2 separate occasions after dark in my yard. The second time it was a momma and 3 cubs, which all promptly climbed trees. He was smart and on guard detail right from the start til the end of his days.I will see him again in Valhalla.

Thank you so much for talking about the potential abuse of crate use. It makes my heart hurt to see so many people leaving dogs in crates for hours and hours during the day after the dogs already spent the whole night sleeping in a crate.

tbh i do like your House training method. subscribing!! i just a little small chihuahua puppy and she is so smart she loves her small little bed/crate - and she would get out to use the pee pad. But we do work so the GATE METHOD is more for our lifestyle. She would love that freedom. Thanks for this video.

We were taking our puppy outside to potty but mama dog wanted to play. They would be out for a long time, then pup come in and pee or poop. Talked to my vet and exercise stimulates need to potty. So playing it good...then I put mama inside and puppy to potty spot by themselves. That enzyme spray is good advice. Oh and mana dog is a rescue and taught the puppies to chew up pee pads. I couldn't leave them down without hoover over to redirect. So I used old towels and sod on a bin lid. Puppy likes crate...left open except at night. I wake at 3AM and 6AM to let her out to potty and no accidents yet, at night at 12 weeks. I didn't know a feeding schedule might help too. So much to learn and so many ideaa out there.

I've never had to be so analytical about house training any dog. This is a great video to teach people to realize frequently going outside with a puppy is exactly what's necessary. Heck, there are people that think adult dogs should hold their pee for several hours. Uh, no!!!!! Yep, all solid advice in this video.
