Sandraiders 2023 Pt.3. Riding the dunes of the Sahara plus what it takes to do this event

- 117 riders entered Sandraiders 2023 to experience riding on 1600km of tracks used in the legendary Paris-Dakar race during the eighties and nineties.
I entered this year on a Yamaha TT600 while my son Charlie took his Honda XR600R and in this video you get see what happens as we scramble through some of the greatest scenery Morocco has to offer over the 7-days the Sandraiders event runs for. Dunes, dust lakes, rocky passes, they're all here!

I would also like to spend a few words about those bikes, that I remember. You look at them and then think to those nowadays bi-cylinders that are good for German motorways (no speed limits) and... what more? Those light mono instead, very simple to service, with no electronics are also very good for traffic busy city centres, not only for the desert, the reason of their success in the 80ies, hence they would have a meaning still nowadays.
What an awesome series this is , and how Harry managed to commentate throughout this I’ll never know , thank you for sharing this with us Harry .

I am a car guy & as such normally have little to no interest in bikes or bike events but somehow this one completely fascinates me! Expensive to take part in but if you have the money & the commitment, what a trip! Bucket list stuff!
I think you looked the price up wrong? 2700 euro inc 8 nights hotel, bike transport, all food/water, full mechanical support and support vehicles…… it’s far from
Expensive and very good value
Might also be factoring the cost of bike modifications. 15k! Ouch!!

A superb series with some stunning video footage and narrated with Harry's characteristic self effacing understatement. Well done to all three, but especially Metcalfe senior. I'm 63 and I'd be lucky to manage one stage of this, let alone seven. Hugely enjoyable; thank you.

Not long enough , absolute fantastic series , thanks for having us along, to You, your son and the group you went with a big thank yous for the footage and narration. It is an incredible event to have an insight into from upon your viewpoint on the bike.

Testament to the quality of this film... I would not describe myself as even the slightest bit interested in bikes/Sandraiders etc. ... but I watched every minute of every film. Great stuff.

Thank-you so much for posting these video's Harry! I rode dirt-bikes decades ago and seeing the footage of you going through the river-beds and sand in that heat exhausted me just viewing it! What great memories for a father and son to make together.

Loved every minute of all 3 episodes. It's very nostalgic for me having had a Honda XL600R & XR650L in the past and really miss those bikes. Great coverage and respect to Harry for hanging in there. I would love to do it with my KTM 690R but the entry, bike prep plus shipping my bike from South Africa makes this event a costly affair.
That is a proper adventure and makes me want to give up 30 years of sports bike and buy a trail. Thanks for posting the videos and we'll done on completing it guys 😁

I have avoided this channel because of my neighbour! He loves cars and mentioned you a LOT. The booga never told me you were into bikes as well. This is just the stuff I love, THANKS.
Hard to describe my admiration for what you, Charlie and the others put yourself through to accomplish a finish. I really enjoyed watching last year’s adventure and was looking forward to the return. Somehow, even though you posted much more video, this year’s event seemed less engaging somehow. I think part of that was giving less emphasis to all of the peripheral things involved, like the logistics of getting the bikes transported, the overnight stopping sites and those who took care of participants, and the general area. Last year came across as a fun challenge. This year seemed like a much bigger challenge but not very much fun. Biking over rock-strewn dry rivers or miles of powdery sand in 40 degree heat seems a bit much. Congratulations on getting through it without bad things happening. And as always, thank you for the quality video content.

@@harrysgarage Sorry if I did make it sound like I already signed up. I didn't. What I, in fact, did was impulse buying a KTM 620 Adventure R and will start prepping it. You said, "start early". Sign-up doesn't seem to be open yet. It might be a bit early, anyway.

Great job "Old Man" I gave up dirt bikes years ago or I should say my body did. Still ride at age 70 and have no plans of stopping. Maybe you should dip your bikes in loc-tite for this ride.

Wow! What a great effort to bring a little known (to most of us) grueling event to our attention, we are entertained. I would love to participate but I'm probably a bit passed it. Anyway Harry, you Charley and Oscar made it through with some great footage, Kudos and to all those who took part wether they made it to the finish or not Bravo!.

That didn't feel like a long video, and I don't even like bikes that much! Just amazing to see the scenery, comradely between riders, and Harry managing to complete the event! Yes, it looks tough and I'm not sure why someone wouldn't think so. All day on a bike, off-road, is tough. And as you get tired, you stop flexing as much. That's when it gets dangerous, and I know that from skiing where I break up the day with a few hot chocolates. I'm really impressed Harry kept up with Charlie!

Watching you all speeding along the vast open dessert plains half way through this video,

Sitting in a comfy chair watching you guys getting battered - day in day out - doesn't do the trip justice, but we do get the gist of your trails and tribulations. Buggered if I would do it, but I am not an adventurer for sure, so my hat is off to you all!
Not sure how you top that, perhaps take a Rolls Shadow on the Dakar route or an Africe Twin to the Arctic Circle 🤔
