Taking my Lancia Zagato back to where I first saw it 50 years ago & driving it on my favourite roads

  • It's fifty years since I first spotted this Lancia Fulvia 1600 Zagato outside my parents house and that moment changed my perception of cars forever, making me the petrolhead I am today.
In this video I take my now fully restored Zagato back to the spot I first saw it in Birkenhead all those years ago and then drive it to my favourite road, to see how it feels when ragged now it's fully run in.

Simply wonderful. The cracking of Harry’s voice as he sees the Lancia where it was parked 50 years ago. The smile on his face as Harry ragged his favourite roads in his teenage dream car. Life affirming stuff for a Sunday, or in fact any, evening. Perfection!

As a teenager, I so, so nearly persuaded my mum to buy a new Zagato off the showroom floor at Tony Brooks Lancia garage, just outside the perimeter of Brooklands race circuit near Weybridge. In the end she bought a new "Export Mini" after the silver tongued Austin sales man told her that the export models were so important to the UK economy that they were built on a separate line from the regular mini at Longbridge to make sure they were 100% perfect!! Both the Fulvia and the Zagato are beautiful cars and definitely the ones that got away for me because I love the brand. Thanks for the memories Harry!

I must confess, not looked at some of your latest videos, due to not being enthused by too many moderns , particularly electrics and so on, so glad you’re back on a classic for this video. The Lancia , particularly a rorty number with the bigger carbs , looks great too.

Thanks so much, Harry! This video has jumped straight to the top of my favourites from your portfolio. My first car was a Fiat 127 with an Abarth exhaust system and the sound from your Fulvia reminds me so much of that. Also, it’s great to know a bit more about your background and your formative experiences. I’m sure there are many more fans like me who truly appreciate what you do here. Thank YOU!

Mine was also a 127 a sport 1.3. Remember the induction noise and rorty exhaust but not as noisy as this. Also mine I remember as pulling better but that’s my imagination.

Well, there's the second favourite in your garage for me, Harry. I loved it back when you showcased the wee beast before she went in for the minor rust repair, as there was something about the shape and definitely something both magical and intoxicating in her voice. The big cat had been showcased around the same time and I was in love with that too. Since then, the big green coupe has shown her teeth and both growled and howled for the camera and I was more in love with it than ever.....and now the little orange rocket has reminded me what fun a small Italian coupe can be and how much of it you can have under the speed limit and yet because of the aural satisfaction, the feeling is that we've pushed limits and really had a whale of a time. If you said to me "Lance, pick one", I couldn't. They both do the same thing for me but from different angles and in a slightly different way.....although I don't believe the Zagato can do "laid back and cruising" as well as the Daimler.....but when cruising, the Daimler can't give you the impression that you can breathe on the gas pedal and be off and howling in a split second like the Zagato can. I am very grateful to you for showing us where you first saw the wee beasty and that we could be along for the ride as you fulfilled a lifelong dream of blasting along one of your favourite roads in the little Lancia Fulvia 1600 Sport Zagato that you'd seen all those years ago. Truly an epic little journey on a lovely road on a beautiful day in a vehicle that was well worth what it took from everyone to put her back the way she was meant to be. Many thanks, Harry and all the best, mate.

Talk about one moment in your life that changes everything. Same exact thing happened to me with a 1979 Porsche 928 - saw it on my street coming home from high school and thought about it everyday for 4 years until I was able to buy virtually the same exact car. I think back on that experience quite often and truly believe I materialized that car into my life (and a little bit of hard work didn't hurt) Thank you for sharing Harry.

Very nice video and proof that the story makes the car! I’m a modified Fulvia owner myself and it strikes me that this car is so noisy. It will not take long before you get tired of it. I think it deserves a proper airbox. Not easy with the DCOE conversion but doable and with a remote intake somewhere behind the Rh headlight it will make it a lot quieter and hence more enjoyable. Love it that your car life started with a Lancia. You need more of them!

Hi Harry, growing up in Kenya, my family relocated to Northamptonshire in 1973, moving to the small village of Loddington. I remember the UK as quite a drab place, with predominantly dull British cars such as Vauxhalls, Marinas, Maxis, Fords, the odd Triumph etc but on our cue-de-sac there was a bit of glamour in the form of an orange Morgan and an orange Fulvia Zagato. My favourite car at the time was an Alfa 2000 GTV; plentiful in Kenya but rare in Northants, so the strange looking Lancia was some sort of an Alfa substitute, but I did not fully appreciate it until much later in life. But like you I have strong memories of it.

Thank you so much for sharing, Harry. The timing of this video is blowing my mind because I’ve just done something incredibly similar:
I turned 16 In 1998, and I got my driver’s license and first car that year. It was a ‘95 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX in white, which is a sporty AWD car with a manual transmission and turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Every afternoon I would leave school and drive 25 miles home through the curvy rural roads of the Blue Ridge mountains in Virginia. Up until last month, those after school drives have remained my fondest motoring memories.
In 2017, I moved out of the city and purchased a home in the rural Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Then, on March 9th of this year, I purchased a new 2022 Subaru WRX in white, which is a sporty AWD car with a manual transmission and a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine.
Over the past month, I’ve been reliving those memorable drives from my teenage years in my new WRX, and I can honestly say that the joy it has brought me is right up there with the happiest days of my life. It’s not just the joy of a great car on a great road, it’s the joy of MY great car on MY great road. Congratulations on coming back to YOUR great road with YOUR great car. My wish is that all the other hopeless gear heads get to experience the same. They deserve it.

Harry, being about a year older than you the first thing I thought was bugger that exhaust note would annoy on a long run.
Which would be a great shame as you would really want to take the car everywhere.
I am glad to hear you will be looking into sorting that out.
The car itself is absolutely fantastic. The idea of a lightweight, great handling car feeling quick at reasonable speeds is what we have to go with now.
200mph cars are great, but on public roads this is no longer tolerated by the powers that be!
Envious is the wrong term. I am happy for you that you have and can now use the car as you want. But if you ever need a co-driver to follow you somewhere in the Zagato, I will definitely be available!

As a highly experienced rolling road owner and operator of some 45 years experience, to me the engine sounds a bit off tune, there is always a combination of jets with Weber carbs that will give you acceptable progression but in this case I feel that there is an issue with the valve timing, my advice would be to try it on the rollers as is then with slightly reduced valve lift at TDC on overlap on both intake and exhaust valves and see what the effect is. I would guess at 33mm chokes, 55F8 slow runs, F16 emulsion tubes, 140 mains, 180 airs and 45 pumps, fuel pressure 2psi, power wise I would hope to see 150 bhp flywheel, bear in mind that we at HT Racing Ltd used to get over 200 bhp from a 1.6l Pinto with perfect road manners, great low end torque and total reliability, good luck and thanks

Awesome video Harry, thanks for sharing this part of your journey. I can still remember the sound of my primary school teacher’s Daimler V8, my friends and I would all wait around after school to listen to her start that engine. It was the 70’s and my dad had a mini and a Humber 80:(

Well I never! I never in my wildest dreams thought that other than farming and the love of cars, I would have something else in common with Harry! I grew up in the area of Wales that Harry was also visiting as a child. Being of a relatively similar age, we were also there at the same time too! My village wasn't Melin Y Wig (Wig is pronounced with an elonganted 'i' sound as in league), but on the other side of Moel Famau to the one that Harry was on in the Vale of Clwyd (Welsh: Dyffryn Clwyd).

Loved watching your video of you taking it through the corners with the sound of the engine. I was pretending to be driving my car through those curves. Good on you Harry for remembering those times.

This was so much fun to watch, and to hear! I owned a Triumph TR3 over fifty years ago, and watching you pilot your car along those great roads really brought back some fine memories. I’ve had many much more advanced cars and much faster motorcycles over the years, but the elemental pleasure of learning to drive that little Triumph, happily sliding around corners, still stands among the best moments of my motoring experience.

Agreed. There's more fun in a light car with 100 bhp on roads like that than in the 500hp beasts he usually drives imho.

All you needed was Matt Monroe playing on the radio climbing out of Ruthin and that would be driving perfection!

Really love the video! For me, part of the allure of owning/ driving a Fulvia is the engineering and refinement. I think the noisy carb setup and exhaust ruins it a bit. Give it a go with the standard carbs, air box and exhaust, you'll love it even more 😊
