Vocalist Johannes Eckerström explains the song: “Bloody Angel is about shame and guilt. You look around and watch all the suffering and while searching for someone or something to blame, you end up in front of the mirror. Everything you touch, you break. Everyone you try to save you hurt and push further away. It is a sad reality of being alive, the fact that the closer you get, the more pain you risk inflicting. You try to stay in the light, spread your wings and aim for the sun. But your eyes and hands are covered in blood and you hit the ground, dragging everything that matters with you. The riff is pretty cool too.”

Avatar are one of my all time favourite bands! But to answer your questions, the main character is someone that works in/for concentration camps and is in charge of the executions and living with that guilt
hence “their blood is on your hands” and Johannes (the vocalist) acting as the Bloody Angel
in the words of Johannes himself:
“‘Bloody Angel’ is about shame and guilt. You look around and watch all the suffering and while you search for someone or something to blame, you end up in front of a mirror. Everything you touch, you break. Everyone you try to save you hurt and push further away.”
Personal responsibility for your own life, your own short-comings, and the path you’ve chosen. I love this video …. That moment when you have to look at yourself. I mean, REALLY look at yourself and see what you’ve become. You can blame your past, your circumstances … anything you choose, but it all comes down to YOU. That’s the day you have a decision to make.
But I highly recommend The Eagle Has Landed, Hail the Apocalypse and (if you want new Avatar) Dance Devil Dance 😄

Quick backstory to meaning of the song; nazi secretary who decided who lived and who died in concentration camps felt guilty enough and was so encompassed with his work so went to the head scientist who carried out the horrific human experiments to ask to kill him(so basically assisted suicide )

I'm sure anyone in that position who has to to make those choices would succumb to overwhelming guilt
It's.... not that. To begin with, it's a Soviet labor camp/gulag. The "bloody angel" that Johannes is portraying is a figment of the worker's imagination, a scapegoat that he blames for the deaths that he's allowed to happen over the years. In his nightmares, the "bloody angel" shows him that he was always the one to blame, he had the power to save people, or at least to remove himself from the position. That's what's being shown to him when they switch places in the chair with the saw. He was always the butcher.
Finally, he begs for the angel to kill him, if it won't take his blame or absolve him. And it does. He finds the angel in his place, with the power to make him suffer and die in the same way he allowed others to.
Absolutely my favorite band. Concerts are wild...circus on steroids!!

I saw them in concert with In This Moment, and Motionless In White. Hail the apocalypse was their first song. Idk what it was, but live he has this energy that gets you going. The singer of Avatar even did an interview, and I was in tears laughing, as it seemed like a commercial

Avatar is IMO one of the best newer metal bands, definitely my favorite. They have SO MUCH amazing music, you honestly can't go wrong! They have a new album coming out this Friday, and I can't wait!

With their 9th album about to drop in just a few days this would be a good time to catch up on Avatar. (The band predates the movies) Yes they are metal. But they are pretty unique. They make metal that is creative without coming across as weak or pretentious or going out of the way to be artsy. Every song and album are different. Kinda like a Swedish metal version of Queen. I don't have a Patreon account or anything yet so I can't make requests. But I can assure you that the Avatar rabbit hole is one that can keep you entertained for a long time! Hope you enjoy more!

I highly recommend you check out some of the new singles (Dance Devil Dance being my favourite of them) Avatar are especially known for changing up their sound on every album, every song will feel like a brand new experience

I just saw them for the first time a couple days ago at the Ice Nine Kills concert. Absolutely incredible band and I hadn’t heard any of their music before but I was hooked. His voice is so haunting, just gorgeous.
This is a song about the NKVD (People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs; later known as KGB), how they sentenced millions to be executed or sent to Siberia to labour camps. "Bloody angel" is a NKVD officer who just approved one death of an "public enemy" after another. And the frontman of Avatar embodies the demon who haunts him in his mind. .
Interesting fact: director Johan Carlen was inspired by Dogville and Manderlаy by Lars von Trier when building the scenery for the clip. For the first time, the band shoots their play separately. Just on a black backdrop.

they're my favorite band of all time and it's really a shame you didn't see them live when you had the chance! NEVER pass up that opportunity again. They're one of those extremely special bands that's MUCH better live. They put on a great show, Johannes is a pro at working the crowd, they're super fun and energetic.
if you check out more of their music, I highly recommend their live performances of "Smells Like A Freakshow" at Wacken, and "The King Welcomes You To Avatar Country" at Alcatraz.

I see people already explained what the song is about, so I'm just here to tell you that Avatar has A LOT to offer! Even their live performances are amazing! I highly recommend checking more of their stuff out!
If you'd like to hear more of Johannes' vocal range and see a funnier/light hearted side of him, I suggest 'The King Welcomes You To Avatar Country' (great title considering you're new to them!) or the song 'The Eagle Has Landed'!
If you'd like something heavier than this (but also catchy), I recommend 'Hail The Apocalypse'!
If you'd like a mix between melodic and heavy, try 'A Secret Door'!
As for live performances, HIGHLY recommend 'Regret//House Of Eternal Hunt -live from Avatar Ages' , 'Let It Burn (live at Sticky Fingers)' and 'Torn Apart' !

I just saw Avatar in concert last night for the first time and they are wild! Their sound is so varied - heavy and groovy in every way. I suggest checking out Hail the Apocalypse, Colossus, Dance Devil Dance, The Dirt I'm Buried In, and Chimp Mosh Pit for a nice wide range.
Inkcarceration takes place every year in my town. This years is the best one they’ve had so far. I’m excited for Slaughter To Prevail to perform on Friday of the festival
I'm so glad you did this, I myself did just learned to know them last year 2023 at SRF in Sweden. Even though I moved to Gothenburg where they are from, the same year they was formed as Avatar but never got to know of them. Now I'm as huge fan of them as of FIR so much one have to dig from 😃

Johannes Eckerstrom's cleans are only outshined by his harsh vocals. i love this band and i think you will too! check some of their live performances. the meaning is explained beautifully in other comments. please do more Avatar! i've never really heard a bad song from them. their catalog is an excellent rabbit hole to jump down. some of the newer stuff i like is Collosus, Going Hunting, So Sang The Hollow. like i said, they don't really have any bad songs. just pick one and go.

I walked into a Babymetal concert a couple years ago having never even heard - or heard of - their opener, Avatar. A few hours later, I walked out with a new favorite current band.
Thank you RR for reacting to this. The song has been haunting me since I recently heard it. Good to put your two loveable faces with it to make it less trauma inducing for me.

I was at a metal festival and just walked by one of the smaller stages and heard something I liked, it was Avatar - Torn apart, I was hooked and the stage show was fantastic.

the heavy part remembers me of In Flames, but the singing is a whole different thing. Amazing to hear
Avatar is on tour this spring, so check them out if you can. Definitely worth seeing live.
And I highly recommend the official video for "Smells Like a Freakshow". If you like deep psychological themes, that one will take you way down the rabbit hole.
After listening to these guys for nearly a decade I'm going to see them live. By chance I am travelling to Boston for a work conference next week and today I saw that they were going to be in Boston next Wednesday. I dont think I have ever bought concert tickets so fast in my life. I've seen their live sets in videos and listened to their music forever I'm so pumped. They are criminally underrated.

I can safely say that this is (so far) my favourite reaction video ever! Its so great to see the thrill on someone else’s face when they hear a song this incredible. I can put all of their albums on repeat and never get tired of it..i just sit there with this huge fricken’ smile on my face……. Another one for my “Masterpieces” playlist.

I love Avatar...and I vote to hear Hail The Apocalypse next
Avatar is amazing. Without going full bore with the humor they are quite a bit like Electric Callboy in that their videos are exceptional, and they are animals on stage they always put on a show. While some of their songs are serious, they don't take themselves serious at all. Their interviews usually involve one or more members of the band being a huge dork. You should check "Statue of the King" next. Great song that also showcases Johannes vocal range, and the video is awesome.

So glad you guys are finally reacting to Avatar!!! One of my favorite bands and they’ve got a new album out that released just today called Dance Devil Dance. Also their music videos are always kinda obscure lol. I recommend the whole Hail The Apocalypse and Black Waltz albums. HTA has a cover of Nirvana’s Something in the Way.

Avatar is a swedish band bloody angel is a song about what the swedes did to the Jewish refugees during WW2 fleeing the Nazis. Instead of letting anyone and everyone come to Sweden as the world thought they did, in recent declassified documents by swedish intelligence they picked and choosed who to let in and who to leave in Nazi hands. The German shepherd obviously represents the German ideal of the final solution and the man is a swedish immigration worker passing judgement. The man in the painting is their president of the time during WW2 Per Albin hasson. The dog showing up represents basically what the swedes did to the Jews was basically just as bad as what the Nazis did and the swedes knew what they where doing and Avatar who is portraying a ghost is their torment or guilt screaming in the immigration workers ear and giving him (the swedish government) nightmares. The end basically means now that the secrets are out and the public knows, just because the Nazis where stopped (the German shepheard leaving) there's a new person to pass judgement and it's the swedish people this time ( the lead singer sitting at the desk) but it's on the swedish government and deciding on how they want to hold their government accountable for how they treated the Jews.
