That's a really good idea, however I've had both legs amputated below the knee from complications from diabetes. My question is would 2 walking crutches allow me to be mobile without a wheelchair? My name is Matt I live in Las Vegas N.V.
Me too . I’m still a bit confused as to the leg that’s been amputated. I thought it was the right with the left leg banged and bruised up. 🤷🏼♀️🧐 Beautiful Spirited young woman regardless the leg. Same exact challenges emotionally , mentally and physically. But it’s a bit confusing for me with which leg has been amputated.
she's absolutely gorgeous not just physically which she obviously is, but I also love her personality and how caring and open and free she is with herself. I'd like very much to find a woman and be with a woman who has her qualities!
As a 45 year old man, I suffered an evulsive amputation of my right arm and serious leg and spine injuries as well. You girl are wonderful and absolutely fantastic. Recovery is never about what happened but about facing adversity with a will to recover. I was told what I couldn't do and 25 years later, I am fortunate to still be able to work and laugh and live life to the fullest because like you, that is our only choice. Take good care and stay happy.
As someone who is in her shoe, I learned something a long time ago. You have a choice when something like this happens. You can let it define you going forward, or you can defy it. Losing a limb us a magnifier. If you are a decent, strong person before, you become more of one after the change in your life. If life always defeats you, you will let it drag you down. One keeps people around who will support you, and give you that hand up when you need it, the other drives people away, just when you need them the most. I became an AKA in July of.last year. Jo and her channel, as well as friends I have known for decades facing the same struggle have.made it easier to deal with this. Because they are the same way she is about it. My able friends also make it easier to cope with, because they understand this. I am.still the same person I was, with a better appreciation for life,.despite what I have.been through. Something that has brought us all closer, and makes us treasure the time we have even more.
Thanks for all you're doing to inform people. The reality is any of us can wind up with an amputation, so it's helpful to see your videos to learn more. I wasn't even aware of the walking crutch until saw your videos. Keep up the good work!
Kid at my school has a prosthetic leg, he's actually really cool. His leg broke somehow so for a couple days he was on a strange type of crutches but then went in for surgery on something so he was in a wheelchair for a while. He finally has his leg back but the funniest thing is seeing him casually just walking around with another foot in his backpack like "nothing to see here!"
How heavy is a prosthetic limb? Are they close to weighing what the missing limb weighed? Are they different weights depending on the needs of the individual? E.g is a running blade lighter than a standard one?
How heavy a prosthetic leg depends on what type of foot the amp has. Blades are known to be extremely light because it's carbon fiber, that material is also what’s inside an everyday leg as well. This time the carbon fiber is inside a rubber molding of a foot which can add weight. Adjustable heels are also really heavy because of the amount of metal in it. I've personally have never had a real leg because I have PFFD, a birth deficiency, so I'm not sure if it's heavier or lighter. If someone is below the knee it is usually lighter. If someone is above the knee it is usually heavier because the artificial knee takes most of the weight. Hope this helps!

The disorder may affect one side or both, with the hip being deformed and the leg shortened. (I just googled it)
@@jeannie2548 lol what the other person said. It's just a really tiny leg and foot with no knee. I’ve had Rotation Plasti where my leg gets chopped off, completely turned around, and sewed back together, giving me more range of motion when I'm in my prosthetic. Technically my heel is my knee, and my knee is technically my hip, I know it's confusing but that's what I have to explain to people. So I'm not an actual amputee! Lol
As a doc I find this really interesting. I see patients post amputations but never thought of how their life goes on after discharge. Great that this lady give you such a thorough insight into her life xx

Hi Jo, I've been an amputee for many years, it's so good to see you getting on with life and sharing some great tips. I've bought one of these puppies recently, foe me they are so awkward and uncomfortable as I have some knee problems, due to being an amp for so many years. I am hoping to get back on my prosthetic very shortly as this thing is driving me nuts. Love your work.
I’m not sure if this would work for you or be a decent option but my little cousin sometimes decides to use normal crutches and get around like someone who’s simply broken their leg instead of having it amputated. He doesn’t do that all the time though, just when he can’t use his prosthetic
No matter how long you've been an amputee when you first get a prosthetic it feels heavy and is hard to use it so don't worry, its that way for everyone. You'll eventually get the hang of it. It just takes time and practice. My above knee amputation was done in April of this year and I got my prosthetic at the end of September after 3 months of physical therapy to build strength and flexibility to prepare me for it. When I first got my prosthetic leg I was excited until I tried it on and attempted to walk. I became extremely worried I wouldn't be able to use it properly because it was so heavy and I didn't have the muscle strength to lift it even a little and that was after months of physical therapy. But do not think that's how hard it will always be, you will build muscle strength and balance the more you use it. At first you will need crutches or a walker. After you master that I'd recommend a rollator which is like a push cart on wheels, this made all the difference for me. Crutches were just slowing me down, a rollator is great because it allows you to walk with fluid motion behind it while holding onto it for balance. In contrast, with a walker or crutches its a more jerky motion with starts and stops so walking with them isn't as natural a movement. Now that it's the end of December I can walk pretty fast with a rollator, slowly with a cane and sometimes I can do short distances like across a room and back without any mobility aids at all. Just keep working at it, you've lost a lot of muscle strength you have to rebuild because it's been so long but as long as you are determined you can make it happen. Please note if your prosthetic is extremely uncomfortable or painful or doesn't fit right and that is what is causing you not to use it then you need to go back to your prothetist as many times as necessary for adjustments until it does fit right. I needed 10 appointments to get the fit of the test socket right before they made my permanent socket and I've had it adjusted another 8 times after in just 3 months (and I go back again next week to get the brim trimmed yet again.) My prothetist is looking into doing a special modification on my socket to make the thigh adjustable with a flexible brim and ischeal seat because the top of my thigh changes size a lot during the day while the bottom half never changes size so the leg ends up twisting and digs into my groin when I walk. She's already cut it down several inches but it still needs more until she determines what modification to go with (she's looking at the Martin Bionics Swing Brim modification and the LIM Infinite socket as two possibilities.) I am very lucky I have a prothetist willing to work with me to make lots of tiny adjustments for my comfort. If your prothetist dismisses your discomfort as "normal" or allows you to continue to use a painful badly fitting prosthetic without trying to fix it that means you need to find a different prothetist.

You have a strong personality and are very confident! I have never seen anyone like you that has part of their limbs missing and are upbeat! That's a great attitude to have. Not to mention you are attractive as well!

I suffer from clinical depression, depressed most of my life but in the last 4 years I had 2 life changing events 8 months apart, both effected me mentally but not body I hadn't recovered from the first when I had to deal with the second event ,seeing your positive attitude towards what life has dealt you actually helps me too.
I usually crutch it or use my wheelchair. When I use any of those, my family members would ask (not my wife), why aren't you wearing your leg? I've been an amputee for almost 12 years and they do not understand I can't wear it all the time

I've used the iwalk device after surgery on a foot that took about 2 months to heal. It was heavy, but it was much preferable for keeping my independence while living alone on the second floor without an elevator. I was able to grocery shop, cook, and clean. It requires a person to swing their leg and it's easy to get off-balance. I fell from stepping on my other foot with it one time while trying to turn in a tight space. You seem to have great balance

Are you filming on a different type of camera that doesn’t flip you around or that normally does flip you around? As I recall your amputated leg is usually on the other side and I’m pretty sure you aren’t switching legs😄
Hold on you’re onto something here this isn’t right. In this one her left leg is clearly gone but If you look the right leg is gone in the video she just put about her itching amputated leg . I’m also an amputee I don’t wish to be able to switch legs just have it back lol
I wore a walking crutch when I messed up my ankle really bad- and they’re so much more comfortable than arm crutches… so, if your insurance covers one of those instead of crutches, I’d recommend it, especially if you’re a coffee drinker on the go like I am
Those things are great if you have good balance. Got me through three surgeries and is about to get me through a fourth. I couldn't use a knee scooter in my old house. It was, as you say, a lifesaver.
Do you also sometimes use other types of crutches that require hands, and/or a wheelchair? (You mentioned a wheelchair in the previous video but I wasn't sure if you still sometimes use it these days.) I know it's pretty common for people to have more than one mobility aid to meet changing needs with your injury or pain factors. How do your mobility aids compare based on the degree to which they are fatiguing or can cause physical strain or skin breakdown?
I'm an above knee amputee so I can't use an iWalk but besides my prosthetic leg I have 2 different wheelchairs, forearm crutches, regular crutches, 2 walkers, a rollator, and a cane to choose from for mobility aids. I switch out mostly between the nicer wheelchair, rollator and cane but do occasionally use crutches any of which can be with or without my leg on (except the cane, it only works with the leg on.) If I wear the leg depends on how tired I am, how swollen the limb is, how much pain I'm in and if I have any skin issues. I mainly use my wheelchair around the house and don't wear the leg. When I go out I usually wear the leg and either use the wheelchair, rollator or cane depending on how much mobility I have that day.
@@claritey That's fantastic that you have so many options that you need. Just curious, did you have to pay out of pocket for all of those? Or do you live in a country with a health system that pays for them?
@@resourceress7 I've in the US and insurance paid for the more expensive items ($65k prosthetic leg, $3k wheelchair, one walker $120) but not everything was covered so some was out of pocket (both types of crutches total $70, cane $10) but they weren't terribly expensive either, some were donated to me for free by friends (other wheelchair, walker) and the rollator I bought 2nd hand for $35. In the US if I didn't have insurance or the income to pay for those things my options would be to apply for social security disability from the govt but that can take years to get, hope I get approved for Medicaid/Medicare, buy with a special medical credit card called CareCredit or apply for assistance through one of the many private organizations that help disabled people

She talks about her different styles of crutches, pros and cons in another video. Another guy here on youtube using this one and other crutches, also had a tiny sitting scooter to get around the house. Lots of options. This walking crutch is called iWalk, if I remember correctly.
It's not hard to walk up stairs at all. It's just like walking in a real leg, but it feels different. If you’ve been in crutches your whole life it would also be extremely easy to maneuver.
I struggle some days walking up and down stairs depending on which prosthetic I put on my left leg...one does great... the heavier one... some times it hurts a lot and cuts into the back of my leg which is a prosthetic teams job to solve... haven't been to see my team as often because in February a Domino's Pizza driver hit me head on in a turn zone and destroyed my car... and sch is life...LOL! I decided to stop driving due to that... messed up other areas of my body in that car wreck... and had to rehab for that... and still managing to stay independent.
I have a question about muscle imbalance. I expected your right thigh to be much more muscular than your left, but it looks like both are really strong. Do you specifically work to counter muscle imbalance or does it just work out that way naturally?
I always wanted a friend that was missing an appendage so I could make cool wood and aluminum novel prosthetics... You need a spare temporary pirate one when the good one is getting calibrated. Hope I didn't offend, but I'm curious

I remember WWII vets using crutches and pinning up their pant legs. They also had pain issues and this was in the 70s. I deal with pain from my neck injury, just had lumbar surgery S1, L5, L4 and arthritis in my ankles. Getting injections in ankles. I hope the pain is infrequent and less intense in 2024!

It's also very convenient for non-amputees that only managed to shatter their heel as well! I loved that thing after my surgeries. It allowed me to go everywhere, even stairs. 🥰
Lived in one of these (2.0 model) for six months when I shattered my ankle overseas and there weren’t amenities for physically handicapped people. Their phenomenal and made day to day life possible if they kneel scooter or crutches aren’t possible or reliable. Just make sure to add padding below your knee cap, as over time It can cause numbing
Wow I remember using that awesome piece of medical device during my post-op Achilles rupture repair. It was so much better than crutches and I got some crazy looks from people. Amazing videos and awesome positive attitude content. ❤
The walking crutch is actually called a I-Walk. I actually bought one on line over a year and a half ago. It's takes a little time to get used to, but if you actually use a pair of elbow crutches to help keep your balance until you get used to the I-walk
Another fascinating window in to your life Jo. Thanks so much for expanding my brain agan. It looks rather basic and low tech, but when needs must? It gives a whole new meaning to how easy folk like me with two whole actual Meat Legs have it.
I shattered my ankle and broke both my tibia and fibula in my right leg a few years ago, and i got one of those hands free crutches so i could walk around when i needed to. Considering i was medically ordered to be non weight bearing for 3 months on that leg following surgery, that thing was a life saver. You don't realize how much impact not being able to walk around freely has on you until you lose the ability to do so.
As you still have a knee joint, a proper joint built into the walking crutch would allow you to walk much more easily and efficiently using the mobility of your lower leg to articulate the joint.

Probably broke his growth plate in his leg. If you do that too young your leg will not grow anymore. Almost happened to me when I was 12.

I’m not sure if this would work for you or be a decent option but my little cousin sometimes decides to use normal crutches and get around like someone who’s simply broken their leg instead of having it amputated. He doesn’t do that all the time though, just when he can’t use his prosthetic
No matter how long you've been an amputee when you first get a prosthetic it feels heavy and is hard to use it so don't worry, its that way for everyone. You'll eventually get the hang of it. It just takes time and practice.
My above knee amputation was done in April of this year and I got my prosthetic at the end of September after 3 months of physical therapy to build strength and flexibility to prepare me for it. When I first got my prosthetic leg I was excited until I tried it on and attempted to walk. I became extremely worried I wouldn't be able to use it properly because it was so heavy and I didn't have the muscle strength to lift it even a little and that was after months of physical therapy. But do not think that's how hard it will always be, you will build muscle strength and balance the more you use it. At first you will need crutches or a walker. After you master that I'd recommend a rollator which is like a push cart on wheels, this made all the difference for me. Crutches were just slowing me down, a rollator is great because it allows you to walk with fluid motion behind it while holding onto it for balance. In contrast, with a walker or crutches its a more jerky motion with starts and stops so walking with them isn't as natural a movement. Now that it's the end of December I can walk pretty fast with a rollator, slowly with a cane and sometimes I can do short distances like across a room and back without any mobility aids at all.
Just keep working at it, you've lost a lot of muscle strength you have to rebuild because it's been so long but as long as you are determined you can make it happen.
Please note if your prosthetic is extremely uncomfortable or painful or doesn't fit right and that is what is causing you not to use it then you need to go back to your prothetist as many times as necessary for adjustments until it does fit right. I needed 10 appointments to get the fit of the test socket right before they made my permanent socket and I've had it adjusted another 8 times after in just 3 months (and I go back again next week to get the brim trimmed yet again.) My prothetist is looking into doing a special modification on my socket to make the thigh adjustable with a flexible brim and ischeal seat because the top of my thigh changes size a lot during the day while the bottom half never changes size so the leg ends up twisting and digs into my groin when I walk. She's already cut it down several inches but it still needs more until she determines what modification to go with (she's looking at the Martin Bionics Swing Brim modification and the LIM Infinite socket as two possibilities.) I am very lucky I have a prothetist willing to work with me to make lots of tiny adjustments for my comfort. If your prothetist dismisses your discomfort as "normal" or allows you to continue to use a painful badly fitting prosthetic without trying to fix it that means you need to find a different prothetist.

I usually crutch it or use my wheelchair. When I use any of those, my family members would ask (not my wife), why aren't you wearing your leg? I've been an amputee for almost 12 years and they do not understand I can't wear it all the time

I've used the iwalk device after surgery on a foot that took about 2 months to heal. It was heavy, but it was much preferable for keeping my independence while living alone on the second floor without an elevator. I was able to grocery shop, cook, and clean. It requires a person to swing their leg and it's easy to get off-balance. I fell from stepping on my other foot with it one time while trying to turn in a tight space. You seem to have great balance

Are you filming on a different type of camera that doesn’t flip you around or that normally does flip you around? As I recall your amputated leg is usually on the other side and I’m pretty sure you aren’t switching legs😄

I wore a walking crutch when I messed up my ankle really bad- and they’re so much more comfortable than arm crutches… so, if your insurance covers one of those instead of crutches, I’d recommend it, especially if you’re a coffee drinker on the go like I am
I have the iwalk 3.0 and it was a lifesaver when i broke my leg, really they are great devices
Those things are great if you have good balance. Got me through three surgeries and is about to get me through a fourth. I couldn't use a knee scooter in my old house. It was, as you say, a lifesaver.
Do you also sometimes use other types of crutches that require hands, and/or a wheelchair? (You mentioned a wheelchair in the previous video but I wasn't sure if you still sometimes use it these days.)
I know it's pretty common for people to have more than one mobility aid to meet changing needs with your injury or pain factors.
How do your mobility aids compare based on the degree to which they are fatiguing or can cause physical strain or skin breakdown?
I'm an above knee amputee so I can't use an iWalk but besides my prosthetic leg I have 2 different wheelchairs, forearm crutches, regular crutches, 2 walkers, a rollator, and a cane to choose from for mobility aids. I switch out mostly between the nicer wheelchair, rollator and cane but do occasionally use crutches any of which can be with or without my leg on (except the cane, it only works with the leg on.) If I wear the leg depends on how tired I am, how swollen the limb is, how much pain I'm in and if I have any skin issues.
I mainly use my wheelchair around the house and don't wear the leg. When I go out I usually wear the leg and either use the wheelchair, rollator or cane depending on how much mobility I have that day.
@@claritey That's fantastic that you have so many options that you need. Just curious, did you have to pay out of pocket for all of those? Or do you live in a country with a health system that pays for them?
@@resourceress7 I've in the US and insurance paid for the more expensive items ($65k prosthetic leg, $3k wheelchair, one walker $120) but not everything was covered so some was out of pocket (both types of crutches total $70, cane $10) but they weren't terribly expensive either, some were donated to me for free by friends (other wheelchair, walker) and the rollator I bought 2nd hand for $35.
In the US if I didn't have insurance or the income to pay for those things my options would be to apply for social security disability from the govt but that can take years to get, hope I get approved for Medicaid/Medicare, buy with a special medical credit card called CareCredit or apply for assistance through one of the many private organizations that help disabled people

If someone couldn't afford a prosthetic, is the crutch what they'd use instead?
She talks about her different styles of crutches, pros and cons in another video. Another guy here on youtube using this one and other crutches, also had a tiny sitting scooter to get around the house. Lots of options. This walking crutch is called iWalk, if I remember correctly.
How is it to walk up and down stairs in a prosthetic, and how hard is it with the the crush?
It's not hard to walk up stairs at all. It's just like walking in a real leg, but it feels different. If you’ve been in crutches your whole life it would also be extremely easy to maneuver.
I struggle some days walking up and down stairs depending on which prosthetic I put on my left leg...one does great... the heavier one... some times it hurts a lot and cuts into the back of my leg which is a prosthetic teams job to solve... haven't been to see my team as often because in February a Domino's Pizza driver hit me head on in a turn zone and destroyed my car... and sch is life...LOL! I decided to stop driving due to that... messed up other areas of my body in that car wreck... and had to rehab for that... and still managing to stay independent.

I have a question about muscle imbalance. I expected your right thigh to be much more muscular than your left, but it looks like both are really strong. Do you specifically work to counter muscle imbalance or does it just work out that way naturally?

I remember WWII vets using crutches and pinning up their pant legs. They also had pain issues and this was in the 70s. I deal with pain from my neck injury, just had lumbar surgery S1, L5, L4 and arthritis in my ankles. Getting injections in ankles. I hope the pain is infrequent and less intense in 2024!

That crutch was my savior when I broke my ankle

Lived in one of these (2.0 model) for six months when I shattered my ankle overseas and there weren’t amenities for physically handicapped people.
Their phenomenal and made day to day life possible if they kneel scooter or crutches aren’t possible or reliable. Just make sure to add padding below your knee cap, as over time It can cause numbing

The walking crutch is actually called a I-Walk. I actually bought one on line over a year and a half ago. It's takes a little time to get used to, but if you actually use a pair of elbow crutches to help keep your balance until you get used to the I-walk

I shattered my ankle and broke both my tibia and fibula in my right leg a few years ago, and i got one of those hands free crutches so i could walk around when i needed to. Considering i was medically ordered to be non weight bearing for 3 months on that leg following surgery, that thing was a life saver. You don't realize how much impact not being able to walk around freely has on you until you lose the ability to do so.
As you still have a knee joint, a proper joint built into the walking crutch would allow you to walk much more easily and efficiently using the mobility of your lower leg to articulate the joint.
