6-2 was extremely respectable. And the pitchers who got Mike Trout out 4 times, 2 by strikeouts, got the highlights of their life. Trout was (he's getting older and has had injury issues, but is still great) basically the Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe of baseball.
You’re giving props to the pitchers while kind of understating how great Trout still is. Top 3 player in the game right now, despite the injuries of late. He’s that good so props to Great Britain’s pitchers!
WBC is _super_ underrated. It really needs more attention here in the states. Unfortunately, they play it right during March Madness, which is arguably the largest and most viewed tournaments in the states, so the WBC goes under the radar. Glad to see you reacting to it! Keep in mind though that a lot of players on Great Britain or other countries actually have players who grew up in other countries (mostly the USA) but are eligible to play for teams like Great Britain due to one of their parents being from there. That is while you'll see players like Trayce Thompson play for Great Britain and Lars Nootbaar play for Japan, despite both being American. To answer your question @ 9:00, you are correct. The 1st basemen would have to be on the base for the out to be recorded. This is called a "force out". Force outs can only happen when runners are "forced" to run. For example, if there are runners on 1st and 2nd, on a groundball the defense can record a "force out" at 3rd base because the runners are "forced" to run. However, if there was a runner only on 2nd base, but not 1st base, the runner on 2nd is NOT required to run on a ground ball. Therefore, the defense cannot record an out by touching 3rd base with the ball. They would have to tag that runner out. Feel free to ask if this wasn't clear -- it's hard to explain without visuals.
I wish MLB would learn into it. It has the capability of becoming the 2nd biggest sporting even in the world if they'd just quit with treating it like MLB's step child. Hold it after the season rather than during the regular season. I realize this would necessitate that players miss major league games during qualifying, but national team soccer players do this all the time and a given MLB game is much less meaningful than a given EPL game. Next, hold it during the off-season. I realize this necessitates the Classic be held in warm weather areas only, but the Superbowl faces the same issue. Work with it. No pitch count limits, as this only exists to save players for their MLB team let it exist of its own accord.
@@ajdembroski7529 I agree full-heartedly. I would be fully on board with doing what the NHL used to do with the Olympics. Take a break, have a shorter season, and let players represent their country. Or, do it after the season like you said, but it would be pretty cold at any non-indoor environment, which is most besides in the US and the Tokyo Dome. Maybe MLB could shorten spring break by a week, tighten the schedule up by a week (exactly like they did last year due to the lockout), and you just freed up 2 weeks without losing any games. There are options.

@@ajdembroski7529 the best time to do this is around late Feb - early March. No competition. NFL is done and NBA is on all star break and it's before spring training. They can set up games in venues that are not affected by winter weather.
I’m so glad you’ll be watching this. I was actually at this game! My family and I came to Phoenix for a spring training game but had family coming into town for the WBC with extra tickets so we gladly accepted! Also, our seats were right next to the family of Vance Worley, starting pitcher for Great Britain! Turns out Vance’s mother was born in Hong Kong, hence why he was playing for GB. We talked to his in-laws throughout the game and they were extremely nice but also pretty stressed for Vance when he was pitching. At 2:01 you can see Vance writing something in the dirt. His brother-in-law told us that someone in the family (I believe it was his father in law) passed away about a month ago, and Vance was writing his name on the mound in honor of him. It was a great game and atmosphere for my first ever WBC!

But in complex situations, there are multiple options. You always need to keep your mind in the game. Situations can change from pitch to pitch.
The world's first ever World Cup Baseball was actually played in London, with Great Britain defeating the USA and taking the first World Cup championship. It too bad that later MLB refused to major leaguers to participate in World Cup Baseball tournaments, and started hosting a rival tournament themselves, that being the World Baseball Classic. That decision ended World Cup Baseball, as the last one was held in 2011.
So just so you guys know some of the players on the GB team are American. Trayce Thompson for example who hit that home run is an American mlb player but his father was born in the Bahamas so he can play for GB. You guys did great though. Fun game to watch! Love to see the Brit’s stepping it up in the baseball world!
Thanks for checking out the game boys! 6-2 was a very respectable showing for Great Britain. This is their first time even qualifying for the WBC, so your national team is still a young program. Just giving teams like USA tough matchups would be reason to leave the tournament with their heads held high. Colombia was that team last time around, they were in a group with both America & the Dominican Republic (the two that advanced from that group and two top tier championship contenders) and though they lost to both, they were a tough out and definitely would’ve stood a shot of advancing in a group without 2 of the top 3-5 teams. The WBC is really underrated in terms of major tournaments. It’s a great opportunity to watch some highlights of games and gain a stronger appreciation for the sport. The recent Taiwan vs Italy game was fantastic, and since that group is playing in Taiwan for this round (Taichung, Tokyo, Phoenix, & Miami are the host cities with Tokyo & Miami hosting the second round and then Miami being the site for the finals), the atmosphere was incredible. Definitely recommend that if you’re interested in checking out any other WBC games (and there’ll likely be some very good matchups once we reach the knockout stage when teams like the US, Japan, Dominican, Venezuela, Korea, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and this year’s potential Cinderella team, Taiwan, get to face off (I’d include Cuba, but they took two upset losses right off the bat to start group play and might not advance).
For putouts on the the bases, the rule is that for any baserunner that is forced to run, an out is recorded if the fielder possessing the ball tags either the base or the runner before the runner touches the base. So, in this game you saw two examples where the batter was called safe at First Base because the throw to the Firstbaseman caused him to pull his foot off of the base. In one of those plays the Firstbaseman attempted to tag the runner, but the runner slid under his glove.
I enjoy watching you learning our national pastime here in the US. Many of us learn baseball as kids and grow up watching the Major Leaguers play on TV and in person. We take our baseball knowledge for granted, and watching the two of you figure out how the game works reminds me how puzzling it really can be if you are not familiar with the game. I thought you guys had a great showing overall, especially Long. He's the pitcher who gave up the Shwarber home run. He's a kid in Single-A ball (basically the lowest level of MLB professional play) going against multiple MVP-caliber players, and while he gave up some runs, a lot of baseball fans probably expected that. What long-time viewers were watching was how he handled the other batters, and he did extremely well for where he's at. It'll be exciting to see how he and other up-and-comers can progress over the next few years if they keep at it and stay healthy!
You are spot on with the baserunner graphic on the score. In this case, a red base indicates a runner on at the start of play. Also, the decision on where to throw the ball from the outfield to the infield is dictated mostly by situation. The fundamentally sound play is to hit what is called the cutoff man. If the ball is hit to left field, the shortstop goes out to take the throw while the second baseman covers second base. If it's hit to right field, the second baseman goes out to take the throw while short covers second. By cutting off the throw they can redirect the ball where it needs to go at that moment, give it a speed boost, or hold onto it to end the play. Sometimes, especially in the big leagues where the guys have monster arms, it makes more sense to throw to a base from the outfield, but the strength and accuracy required make it pretty risky. Edit to add: You are right about the fielder's foot needing to be on the base to record an out at first base. This is called a force out, the runner is forced to go there anyway so as long as you hit the base with the ball in hand before they get there, it's an out. This applies at any base but only where there is one runner behind another. If you have an open base behind you as a runner, you don't have to advance when the ball is in play, but if there is someone running after you, you must advance. A fielder can also tag a runner who is off the base with the ball at any time for an out.
The fun, for me, is that I grew up playing this sport on run down ball fields and old equipment. Watching someone, with no exposure, learn a game I learned organically is really fascinating. The back of my mind is screaming, come on guys this is obvious. And then I remember the only things I know about cricket I learned from Jomboy... So there's that
@DN Reacts also, to answer a question you had in the video about tagging the runner out/touching the base/etc. There are a lot of different situations in baseball that are similar, but basically, it can be broken down into 2 different groups. Group A: The "have" to get to base. If you're batting and you get a hit, you need to get to 1st obviously. If the ball beats you there, you're out. If you're already on 1st, and the next batter gets a hit, well now you "have" to get to 2nd base, as he now "has" to get to 1st. There are multiple similar scenarios like this, but anytime you "have" to get to a base, the ball beating you there (with a baseman's foot on the bag) is all it takes. You may be tagged instead, if the fielder decides to. Group B: I'll call "optional" base advancement (not real baseball slang, just for explanation) is when you're trying to move beyond the Group A position. These will require being tagged. If you're on 1st and you're trying to steal 2nd, you need to be tagged out. If you're the only one on base, you're on 2nd, and the next hitter gets a good hit, and you decide to try to get to 3rd or home, you need to be tagged. (Remember, in this situation, 1st base is empty, and therefore open to the hitter, so you could technically stay on 2nd base during the hit instead of advancing, you do not "have" to go to the next base.) Simply put, if you "have" to get on that base, no tag required. If you're optionally trying to advance, tag is required. When you see someone thats already on 1st base, and they're stepping away from the bag when the pitcher is getting ready to pitch, they are "optionally" trying to get a head start towards 2nd base. When the pitcher throws the ball to the 1st baseman, you'll see a tag attempt. He has to tag, as the runner was "optionally" ahead of the bag, towards 2nd. Situation would be exactly the same if the runner was on 2nd or 3rd trying to head a head start off the base. Another scenario that comes up: When it comes to base running, if you're trying to lead off the base and the next player up to bat gets a hit... you might start running towards the next base to advance. However, if that hit is caught, the hitter is automatically out, and the runner has to get back to the base he started on. Even though he "optionally" tried to advance early, the ball being caught for the out dictates he now "has" to get back to the base he was originally on. So since the runner has to get back to base, no tag is required. If the ball beats him back to the base, he's an easy out. This is why you'll usually see runners stay on the base during a pop fly, assuming it'll be caught. They can "optionally" decide to try and steal the next base immediately after the catch, so long as they are touching the bag up to the catch. They "optionally" try to advance, tag required. I was hoping to catch the highlights from this game after watching you two picking up on baseball recently. So it's a treat to watch the highlights with you. One suggestion for something you might want to see is comedian George Carlin describing American football vs baseball. First baseman has to be touching the base to get the putout. Taller guys generally are considered for first base because their longer reach helps them to grab more errant throws. Gotta be able to do the splits as well
Just adding that in the play they refer back to in this video -- the first baseman was not touching the base when he caught it however he did tag the runner before reaching the base, and that's why the runner was out.
It also helps if the 1st-Baseman is left-handed. He will already be in position, left foot on the bag and right hand out. If reversed, he would have to stop and twist his body to receive infield throws. As a lefty his glove is always ready and his left foot is always ready.
I've been watching the highlights from all these WBC games. You might want to watch more of them on your channel as well. The play is inspired and the fans and players are really into their countries playing. Great stuff!

the question that comes up at 8:55 in the video is a really good one. There are things called the "force out" and "tag out" which describes how the defense can get base runners out when the ball is put in play. If the batter hits the ball and no one is on base base then the only play for the defense is the "force out" at first. A force out is when the defense only has to have their foot touching the base where the runner is FORCED to go. Imagine there is a runner on 2nd and a ball is batted to the short stop. The short stop cannot throw the ball to 3rd for an out as the runner at 2nd isn't forced to move up a base. The only way to get this runner from 2nd out is to physically tag him while he is off the base. This is a very highlevel description of it but I'm more than happy to expand or further explain. Love what you guys are doing with the channel!

To answer your question about the 9:10 mark, the first baseman has to touch first base with the ball in his glove to get the runner out (or if the runner hasn't reached the base yet the first baseman can tag him, either way though he has to have the ball.) Just getting the ball to the first baseman doesn't do it.
Hey you guys are great. We all appreciate your interest. I'm from L.A. but retired in Florida. Every year the Dodgers play 3 or 4 games in Miami. That's when I drive down from Cocoa and spend a few days there to see all the games.
Heads up, the reason the starting pitchers came out so quickly is that there are pitch count limits in place for this tournament (since is the preseason for MLB) and each pitcher is only allowed to throw 65 pitches in pool play. It will increase in each round but you would normally see starters who've only given up 1 run and have 2 outs in the third stay in to try and finish out the inning. But yeah, y'all did quite well. Everything that you weren't sure of but picked up on eventually was spot on.
That was a very good game. I am extremely proud of the closer David Bednar. He's from Pittsburgh, and I grew up with his father. He's proven to be a great pitcher.
Solid effort by Great Britain. To answer your question, the only way you can put someone out just by catching the ball is if it's hit in the air and you catch it before it hits the ground. On a throw to the base it depends, if the runner is forced to go to that base (always the case when the hitter is running to first base) the fielder just has to tag the base. (Typically by standing on it or otherwise making contact with the base using his foot, but I think it can be any part of his body as long as he's in control of the ball. I'm sure he can tag the base with the ball, or with his glove while it's holding the ball.) If it isn't a force play the fielder must tag the player with the ball, with his glove which is holding the ball, or with his other hand if he's holding the ball in that hand, while the runner is not on the base. In the play you asked about it was on the hitter running to first so it was a force play, but the first baseman had to come off of the base in order to catch the ball. If he'd had time to go back and tag the base before the runner got there the runner would still be out, but he didn't have time to do that. One other note: when the hitter is running to first base he does not have to stop on the base. As long as he doesn't turn to head towards second base he can take his time coming to a stop and going back to first, and the fielder can't tag him out. At any other base, or even at first if the runner makes a turn towards second base, if you over run the base you can be tagged out by a fielder if he can get to you before you get back to the base. But this would not be considered a force play - the fielder would have to tag the runner, not the base.

When bases are empty, it's basically a race between the runner and the ball. Usually the basemean will have his foot on the side of the base waiting for the ball. The runner can be tagged before reaching the base as well, like in the case of a bunt that the pitcher picks up. 1st base is also the only base the runner is allowed to overrun, cause they're charging as hard as they can, as long as they don't turn toward the next base and beat the throw to the bag, they are allowed to walk back after running past, even if the 1st baseman is still in possession of the ball.
8:56 In this case, the baserunner heading to first base is in a forceout scenario since he is obligated to run to first base. For a forceout, the fielder simply needs to have possession of the ball and be touching the base by any means before the baserunner reaches it. This is in contrast to a tagout scenario where the baserunner is moving about on their own accord and must be physically tagged with the ball or a glove holding the ball while not touching a base to be put out.
To answer your question about throwing a runner out, the fielder making the put-out (in this case the first baseman) must either have his foot on the base when he receives the throw BEFORE the runner arrives at the base, or tag the runner before the runner reaches the base. This applies at all bases in case of a "force out". A force out is when the runner in jeopardy is "forced" to run, either by being the batter or by having a base runner behind him who is also advancing. For instance, if there is a runner on first and the batter hits a ball to the third baseman, the third baseman can throw it to second base to "force" the runner who is attempting to advance from first to second, out, since he has to run, because the batter is entitled to first base. In cases of NON force outs, like if a batter is trying to advance from first to second on his own hit, or if a runner on first attempts to then advance from second to third on a hit, then the fielder making the put out must physically tag the runner with the ball or the ball-in-glove to record the out, before the runner reaches the base.
It was an incredibly fun game to watch. USA players were out in front pulling everything that game. Klay Thompson's brother had a great game. That 20-year-old catcher is great. It looks like Team Great Britain ran out of pitching against Canada.
So, the first GB Home Run was definitely an American who plays for the Dodgers. His father, Mychal, was a professional basketball player. His brother is Klay Thompson. But Mychal Thompson was born in the Bahamas before independence so was a British subject. That said, 6-2 with a bunch of guys from A-ball and independent leagues is a great result for GB.

When a fielder doesn’t throw it back right away : In this clip it looks like there was no play, all runners were going to be safe easily, so there was no reason to rush a throw which could result in a throwing error. Another situation, similar to this, is called “looking back the runner”, where the fielder holds the ball and stares at the runner(s), essentially daring them to try to advance on him. He would do this when the runner(s) has already started towards the next base, but the fielder has the definite advantage. 99% of the time the runner retreats. It’s also a very helpful move when there are multiple runners on base, looking back each runner so neither advances, instead of making a snap throw and having one runner take advantage of that by advancing.
I see several people already explained the ‘force out’, I’d just like to add, in case of a tie, by rule , the call favors the runner and the runner is safe.

8:58 Yes the fielder has to either be touching the base when he catches the ball, or he can catch the ball and try to tag the runner with his glove before the runner gets to the base. Catching the ball in and of itself has no effect. Also, they MUST tag the runner, even if they're touching the base, in a situation where the runner isn't being "forced" to go to that base (i.e. if the runner could, theoretically, decide to turn around and go back to their previous base, you have to tag them to get them out).
On touching the base or the runner: at first base, all of the plays are tied to the base - the fielder (usually the first baseman) must touch the bag while in possession of the ball. Most tag plays (tagging the runner) at first base will happen because of an errant throw where tagging the runner is the best option to get the batter (runner) out. Another tag play is when the pitcher throws to the first baseman (rather than pitching to the catcher at home) in an attempt to catch the runner at first base. Generally, the runner will take a lead (stepping towards 2nd base about two or three strides from first base) If the pitcher throws to first, the first baseman must tag the runner before the runner touches first base in order to record an out. The same can happen with a throw to any other base (second base or third base) by the pitcher. The other circumstances for a tag versus a bag (base0 play are generally defined by whether someone occupies the base behind the runner in question. In order for it to be a touch the base play, all bases behind the runner in question must be occupied. In other words, if the ball is grounded to a player with men on first and second, the fielder could throw to third base where the third basemen only has to receive the ball and touch the bag for what is called a force out (in other words, the runner is "forced" to that base because of the runners behind him). The third baseman, in turn, could throw to second base or first base to get another out, as long as the ball is received and the base is touched by the receiving player before the runner touches the base. If there isn't an opportunity for a force out, then the runner must be tagged (rather than the base). Let's say there's a runner on second base when a ground ball is batted. The fielding player could throw to third base but the runner would have to be tagged after the receiver has control of the ball and before the runner tags first base.
Deciding which base to throw to is super important. Yes, sometimes they have to pause a split second to figure out the best strategy, and sometimes they double-clutch, or throw to the wrong base 😂

As a big baseball fan, I'm glad you are watching and enjoying. I have family in London who visited the states a decade ago, and one thing we did together was go to a ballgame. It was fascinating watching with someone who had heard phrases like "3 strikes" but didn't really know the rules. If you look at the top left corner of the screen, you will see a box. it can tell you if one team is on a base. Plus the number of outs, pitch count like 3 balls 1 strike, and so on. whats the score? look at the box. I think it comes from the olde days scorebroads the one in the park showing the fans whats going on. The olde days like before electric, manual scorebroad.
Honestly, the main reason outfielders will relay the ball in slowly is just that there's no play to be made. For instance, a player can generally go from 1st to 3rd on a simple base hit to the short outfield, but he's very rarely taking that hit home. So rather than fire a ball in that might end up off line when there's little chance the runner's gonna test him there, he'll take his time and throw in an accurate ball. The vast majority of the time, you know where you're going with the ball before it's hit. For instance, if I'm a center fielder and there's a man on 2nd with no outs, I know I'm throwing home on something that drops in front of me, 2nd base if I have to range back for it. If I'm an infielder, on a ground ball, I'm looking the runner back to the base, then going to 1st for the force out. Regarding force outs- If a runner has the option of returning to a previous base, the runner must be tagged. If he cannot return to a previous base becasue either it's home plate or a teammate is occupying it, the defender need only tag the base while in posession of the ball. This is called a "Force out."
Trayce Thompson was born in Los Angeles and went to Santa Margarita HS in Orange County, CA. But he is on Great Britain team because his grandfather from England and not enough room left to play for USA team.

Great vid. I am sure you will get a ton of instruction for the rules but in regards to base running. If it's a forced out, it means that the defense only needs to touch the base with the ball in their possession to get the runner headed to that base out. This happens when the runner must run to the next base. If the runner can stay on their current base and they attempt to run to the next, the defender must "tag" (with the ball) the runner. Touching the base (by the defender) does nothing.
4:46 Based on my own my experience in center field, hesitation to throw the ball is about judging the risk of an errant throw. Since childhood, my coaches always drilled into my head to be aware of the baserunning situation and know where you'll throwing to before the ball is even pitched, so I wouldn't say there's much hesitation about where to throw. However, you do need to gauge whether the reward of throwing out a running outweighs the risk of making a far throw that could be off target and allow the baserunners to advance even further. You need to check if the infielders are in position to accept the throw and how much you trust your arm that day.
Very respectable performance by the UK. I hope baseball will increase in popularity in the UK, and that one day, the UK can field a team on par with the USA. Baseball is the only sport I care about, and it would be great to me if one day it were as popular as football (soccer) and cricket currently are. Then we're have a world series that truly was 🙂
4:56 Fielders only throw it back quickly if they know there's a shot at throwing the runner out. In this case, the runner was at 2nd before the center fielder got the ball and wasn't trying for 3rd, so there was no reason to risk a throwing error on a quick throw back in.
9:00, the defender needs to be touching the base + holding the ball before the runner gets there to record an out. If he has the ball but the runner touches the base before he does the runner will be safe. This only works on "force outs" where the runner doesnt have a legal base to run backwards too. This includes all plays at first base (you cant run back to home) or any play at another base where the previous bases are all full of runners. (For example you are a runner on first base and someone hits it into play, you cannot run backwards to first since the batter needs to go there. Then you could be "force-outed" at second base but not third. If the play is not a force out (i.e. the runner can stay where he is or run backwards) then the defender must actually tag the player with the ball. To round it to another example on the play in question, the runner at first is a force out(just need to touch base with the ball) but if they tried to get the runner going home out, they'd have to actually tag him with the ball since he could go back to third base.
They were really hammering that third base line in this game. If the first baseman catches the ball but the runner has already tagged the base, the baseman cannot tag the runner out unless the runner makes a try for second (i.e. the runner can return to first safely). This is the only base where this rule applies.
Team Great Britain did a very good job in this game. There are so many games. The best teams in baseball are lucky to win a little more than half the time!
Trayce Thompson, who hit the early home run for GB, was born and raised in California but is playing for GB in the World Baseball Classic to honor his father, Mychal (a former Los Angeles Laker player), who was born in the Bahamas. Trayce plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers in MLB.
During a ground ball, with the ball in his possession, the first baseman must "tag" the bag before the runner, or tag the runner before the runner gets to first base. Side note, if the runner makes a move like he was going to go to second base after crossing first base, he can be tagged out for "trying to take an extra base".
I noticed that the US team were really pulling the ball down the third base line, so they were getting around on the GB pitchers, meaning these guys have a lot less speed on their pitches than Major League guys. One thing you might be interested in is that West Ham United, the famous soccer club, at one time had a baseball team that was very popular and drew big crowds. This was in the 1930's. A book was written on the West Ham Baseball Club, and they point out that during the 1930's, baseball had started to make genuine in-roads into gaining popularity in Britain and might have grown into a high level professional sport, but that the war put an end to that, and afterwards baseball never recovered. West Ham was the "Yankees" of British baseball. One possible reason for this brief period of popularity is that it seems that King George V had watched Americans and Canadians playing baseball during World War One, and became an enthusiastic fan of the sport. Sounds odd, but it seems to have been true.
On a force out (the runner has to advance- in this instance the hitter has to go to first) then the defense has to have the ball and be touching the base before the runner touches the bag.
Those little diamonds on the score display turn red when there's a man on base. If they're all red, the bases are loaded. Schwarber's HR went about 425 feet
On first base runners can over run the bag and turn towards foul ground and not be tagged out . All other bases if it a face which means runners have to go to the next base you just need to tag the bag, no force you have to tag runner while he is off the bag
You touch the base (if the runner has absolutely nowhere else to go... like 1st or during a squeeze play) or touch the batter/runner with the ball to get a running player out.
Well done, guys, this was enjoyable. Your instincts were correct, by the way: when a fielder gets the ball that's been hit and throws the ball to the first baseman, the first baseman needs to be touching the base when he gets the throw for the hitter to be out. If the hitter gets to first base before the throw, he's safe, or if (as in the video) the throw is wide of the mark and pulls the first baseman off the base, the runner will be safe. Unless the first baseman somehow manages to get the wild throw and touch the base before the hitter gets there. Also, you're right that when an outfielder gets the ball and seems to pause before throwing it back to the infield, it's because he sees the runner or runners are reaching the base they were going to already, so he's just making sure they don't try to keep going to the next base before he tosses the ball back to the infield. If a runner was trying to take an extra base, he would throw the ball to whichever base the runner was trying to get to so that the defender there could have the ball there first and tag the runner out.
The first baseman has to be on the base when the ball is thrown to him before the runner reaches the base or he has to tag the runner before he reaches the base, which is why on the first throwing error that was high you saw the first baseman jump to catch the ball taking him off the base and he tried to swing his glove down quickly and tag the runner which would still be an out, but the runner slid under the tag. That’s about all there is to know. The runner can overrun first base unlike other bases. So it can be a dead sprint without having to stop right on the base. They just can’t turn like they are going to second or they can be tagged out. That may be something to keep in mind. Other little oddities can come up like interference or the base runner not staying in the field of play but those are quite rare and I wouldn’t worry about them now.

6-2 was extremely respectable. And the pitchers who got Mike Trout out 4 times, 2 by strikeouts, got the highlights of their life. Trout was (he's getting older and has had injury issues, but is still great) basically the Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe of baseball.
Don’t sleep on Trout. He’s only 30 this year. Last year was a bad year for him. It’s a career year for 99% of the rest of MLB.

WBC is _super_ underrated. It really needs more attention here in the states. Unfortunately, they play it right during March Madness, which is arguably the largest and most viewed tournaments in the states, so the WBC goes under the radar. Glad to see you reacting to it!
Keep in mind though that a lot of players on Great Britain or other countries actually have players who grew up in other countries (mostly the USA) but are eligible to play for teams like Great Britain due to one of their parents being from there. That is while you'll see players like Trayce Thompson play for Great Britain and Lars Nootbaar play for Japan, despite both being American.
To answer your question @ 9:00, you are correct. The 1st basemen would have to be on the base for the out to be recorded. This is called a "force out". Force outs can only happen when runners are "forced" to run. For example, if there are runners on 1st and 2nd, on a groundball the defense can record a "force out" at 3rd base because the runners are "forced" to run. However, if there was a runner only on 2nd base, but not 1st base, the runner on 2nd is NOT required to run on a ground ball. Therefore, the defense cannot record an out by touching 3rd base with the ball. They would have to tag that runner out.
Feel free to ask if this wasn't clear -- it's hard to explain without visuals.
I wish MLB would learn into it. It has the capability of becoming the 2nd biggest sporting even in the world if they'd just quit with treating it like MLB's step child.
Hold it after the season rather than during the regular season. I realize this would necessitate that players miss major league games during qualifying, but national team soccer players do this all the time and a given MLB game is much less meaningful than a given EPL game. Next, hold it during the off-season. I realize this necessitates the Classic be held in warm weather areas only, but the Superbowl faces the same issue. Work with it. No pitch count limits, as this only exists to save players for their MLB team let it exist of its own accord.
@@ajdembroski7529 I agree full-heartedly. I would be fully on board with doing what the NHL used to do with the Olympics. Take a break, have a shorter season, and let players represent their country. Or, do it after the season like you said, but it would be pretty cold at any non-indoor environment, which is most besides in the US and the Tokyo Dome.
Maybe MLB could shorten spring break by a week, tighten the schedule up by a week (exactly like they did last year due to the lockout), and you just freed up 2 weeks without losing any games. There are options.

@@ajdembroski7529 the best time to do this is around late Feb - early March. No competition. NFL is done and NBA is on all star break and it's before spring training. They can set up games in venues that are not affected by winter weather.
I’m so glad you’ll be watching this. I was actually at this game! My family and I came to Phoenix for a spring training game but had family coming into town for the WBC with extra tickets so we gladly accepted!
Also, our seats were right next to the family of Vance Worley, starting pitcher for Great Britain! Turns out Vance’s mother was born in Hong Kong, hence why he was playing for GB. We talked to his in-laws throughout the game and they were extremely nice but also pretty stressed for Vance when he was pitching. At 2:01 you can see Vance writing something in the dirt. His brother-in-law told us that someone in the family (I believe it was his father in law) passed away about a month ago, and Vance was writing his name on the mound in honor of him.
It was a great game and atmosphere for my first ever WBC!

4:46 *Before every pitch,* defensive players are taught to think: where am I going to throw the ball if it is hit to me? In some situations, there's only one option. But in complex situations, there are multiple options. You always need to keep your mind in the game. Situations can change from pitch to pitch.
The world's first ever World Cup Baseball was actually played in London, with Great Britain defeating the USA and taking the first World Cup championship. It too bad that later MLB refused to major leaguers to participate in World Cup Baseball tournaments, and started hosting a rival tournament themselves, that being the World Baseball Classic. That decision ended World Cup Baseball, as the last one was held in 2011.
So just so you guys know some of the players on the GB team are American. Trayce Thompson for example who hit that home run is an American mlb player but his father was born in the Bahamas so he can play for GB.

I looked at Great Britians roster, I believe out of 38 on the roster, 22 are from the US, 7 Bahamas, 1 Canada, 1 US Virgin Islands, and 6 from the UK.

6-2 was a very respectable showing for Great Britain. This is their first time even qualifying for the WBC, so your national team is still a young program. Just giving teams like USA tough matchups would be reason to leave the tournament with their heads held high. Colombia was that team last time around, they were in a group with both America & the Dominican Republic (the two that advanced from that group and two top tier championship contenders) and though they lost to both, they were a tough out and definitely would’ve stood a shot of advancing in a group without 2 of the top 3-5 teams.
The WBC is really underrated in terms of major tournaments. It’s a great opportunity to watch some highlights of games and gain a stronger appreciation for the sport.
The recent Taiwan vs Italy game was fantastic, and since that group is playing in Taiwan for this round (Taichung, Tokyo, Phoenix, & Miami are the host cities with Tokyo & Miami hosting the second round and then Miami being the site for the finals), the atmosphere was incredible. Definitely recommend that if you’re interested in checking out any other WBC games (and there’ll likely be some very good matchups once we reach the knockout stage when teams like the US, Japan, Dominican, Venezuela, Korea, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and this year’s potential Cinderella team, Taiwan, get to face off (I’d include Cuba, but they took two upset losses right off the bat to start group play and might not advance).
You guys picked the right time to get into baseball that’s for sure.

For putouts on the the bases, the rule is that for any baserunner that is forced to run, an out is recorded if the fielder possessing the ball tags either the base or the runner before the runner touches the base. So, in this game you saw two examples where the batter was called safe at First Base because the throw to the Firstbaseman caused him to pull his foot off of the base. In one of those plays the Firstbaseman attempted to tag the runner, but the runner slid under his glove.

I thought you guys had a great showing overall, especially Long. He's the pitcher who gave up the Shwarber home run. He's a kid in Single-A ball (basically the lowest level of MLB professional play) going against multiple MVP-caliber players, and while he gave up some runs, a lot of baseball fans probably expected that. What long-time viewers were watching was how he handled the other batters, and he did extremely well for where he's at. It'll be exciting to see how he and other up-and-comers can progress over the next few years if they keep at it and stay healthy!
The Dominican Republic vs Venezuela game was an incredible atmosphere. Both countries are loaded with talent and the players and fans are so into it.
You are spot on with the baserunner graphic on the score. In this case, a red base indicates a runner on at the start of play.
Also, the decision on where to throw the ball from the outfield to the infield is dictated mostly by situation. The fundamentally sound play is to hit what is called the cutoff man. If the ball is hit to left field, the shortstop goes out to take the throw while the second baseman covers second base. If it's hit to right field, the second baseman goes out to take the throw while short covers second. By cutting off the throw they can redirect the ball where it needs to go at that moment, give it a speed boost, or hold onto it to end the play. Sometimes, especially in the big leagues where the guys have monster arms, it makes more sense to throw to a base from the outfield, but the strength and accuracy required make it pretty risky.
Edit to add: You are right about the fielder's foot needing to be on the base to record an out at first base. This is called a force out, the runner is forced to go there anyway so as long as you hit the base with the ball in hand before they get there, it's an out. This applies at any base but only where there is one runner behind another. If you have an open base behind you as a runner, you don't have to advance when the ball is in play, but if there is someone running after you, you must advance. A fielder can also tag a runner who is off the base with the ball at any time for an out.

The fun, for me, is that I grew up playing this sport on run down ball fields and old equipment. Watching someone, with no exposure, learn a game I learned organically is really fascinating. @DN Reacts also, to answer a question you had in the video about tagging the runner out/touching the base/etc. There are a lot of different situations in baseball that are similar, but basically, it can be broken down into 2 different groups.
Group A: The "have" to get to base. If you're batting and you get a hit, you need to get to 1st obviously. If the ball beats you there, you're out. If you're already on 1st, and the next batter gets a hit, well now you "have" to get to 2nd base, as he now "has" to get to 1st. There are multiple similar scenarios like this, but anytime you "have" to get to a base, the ball beating you there (with a baseman's foot on the bag) is all it takes. You may be tagged instead, if the fielder decides to.
Group B: I'll call "optional" base advancement (not real baseball slang, just for explanation) is when you're trying to move beyond the Group A position. These will require being tagged. If you're on 1st and you're trying to steal 2nd, you need to be tagged out. If you're the only one on base, you're on 2nd, and the next hitter gets a good hit, and you decide to try to get to 3rd or home, you need to be tagged. (Remember, in this situation, 1st base is empty, and therefore open to the hitter, so you could technically stay on 2nd base during the hit instead of advancing, you do not "have" to go to the next base.)
Simply put, if you "have" to get on that base, no tag required. If you're optionally trying to advance, tag is required.
When you see someone thats already on 1st base, and they're stepping away from the bag when the pitcher is getting ready to pitch, they are "optionally" trying to get a head start towards 2nd base. When the pitcher throws the ball to the 1st baseman, you'll see a tag attempt. He has to tag, as the runner was "optionally" ahead of the bag, towards 2nd. Situation would be exactly the same if the runner was on 2nd or 3rd trying to head a head start off the base.
Another scenario that comes up: When it comes to base running, if you're trying to lead off the base and the next player up to bat gets a hit... you might start running towards the next base to advance. However, if that hit is caught, the hitter is automatically out, and the runner has to get back to the base he started on. Even though he "optionally" tried to advance early, the ball being caught for the out dictates he now "has" to get back to the base he was originally on. So since the runner has to get back to base, no tag is required. If the ball beats him back to the base, he's an easy out. This is why you'll usually see runners stay on the base during a pop fly, assuming it'll be caught. They can "optionally" decide to try and steal the next base immediately after the catch, so long as they are touching the bag up to the catch. They "optionally" try to advance, tag required.

First baseman has to be touching the base to get the putout. Taller guys generally are considered for first base because their longer reach helps them to grab more errant throws. Gotta be able to do the splits as well
Just adding that in the play they refer back to in this video -- the first baseman was not touching the base when he caught it however he did tag the runner before reaching the base, and that's why the runner was out.
It also helps if the 1st-Baseman is left-handed. He will already be in position, left foot on the bag and right hand out. If reversed, he would have to stop and twist his body to receive infield throws. As a lefty his glove is always ready and his left foot is always ready.

the question that comes up at 8:55 in the video is a really good one. There are things called the "force out" and "tag out" which describes how the defense can get base runners out when the ball is put in play. If the batter hits the ball and no one is on base base then the only play for the defense is the "force out" at first. A force out is when the defense only has to have their foot touching the base where the runner is FORCED to go.
Imagine there is a runner on 2nd and a ball is batted to the short stop. The short stop cannot throw the ball to 3rd for an out as the runner at 2nd isn't forced to move up a base. The only way to get this runner from 2nd out is to physically tag him while he is off the base. This is a very highlevel description of it but I'm more than happy to expand or further explain. Love what you guys are doing with the channel!

To answer your question about the 9:10 mark, the first baseman has to touch first base with the ball in his glove to get the runner out (or if the runner hasn't reached the base yet the first baseman can tag him, either way though he has to have the ball.) Just getting the ball to the first baseman doesn't do it.

Heads up, the reason the starting pitchers came out so quickly is that there are pitch count limits in place for this tournament (since is the preseason for MLB) and each pitcher is only allowed to throw 65 pitches in pool play. It will increase in each round but you would normally see starters who've only given up 1 run and have 2 outs in the third stay in to try and finish out the inning.
But yeah, y'all did quite well. Everything that you weren't sure of but picked up on eventually was spot on.
That was a very good game. I am extremely proud of the closer David Bednar. He's from Pittsburgh, and I grew up with his father. He's proven to be a great pitcher.
Solid effort by Great Britain. To answer your question, the only way you can put someone out just by catching the ball is if it's hit in the air and you catch it before it hits the ground. On a throw to the base it depends, if the runner is forced to go to that base (always the case when the hitter is running to first base) the fielder just has to tag the base. (Typically by standing on it or otherwise making contact with the base using his foot, but I think it can be any part of his body as long as he's in control of the ball. I'm sure he can tag the base with the ball, or with his glove while it's holding the ball.) If it isn't a force play the fielder must tag the player with the ball, with his glove which is holding the ball, or with his other hand if he's holding the ball in that hand, while the runner is not on the base. In the play you asked about it was on the hitter running to first so it was a force play, but the first baseman had to come off of the base in order to catch the ball. If he'd had time to go back and tag the base before the runner got there the runner would still be out, but he didn't have time to do that.
One other note: when the hitter is running to first base he does not have to stop on the base. As long as he doesn't turn to head towards second base he can take his time coming to a stop and going back to first, and the fielder can't tag him out. At any other base, or even at first if the runner makes a turn towards second base, if you over run the base you can be tagged out by a fielder if he can get to you before you get back to the base. But this would not be considered a force play - the fielder would have to tag the runner, not the base.
Very much warms my heart when the US has taken an interest in soccer and that Great Britain has developed a competitive baseball team. How cool is that?

When bases are empty, it's basically a race between the runner and the ball. Usually the basemean will have his foot on the side of the base waiting for the ball. The runner can be tagged before reaching the base as well, like in the case of a bunt that the pitcher picks up. 1st base is also the only base the runner is allowed to overrun, cause they're charging as hard as they can, as long as they don't turn toward the next base and beat the throw to the bag, they are allowed to walk back after running past, even if the 1st baseman is still in possession of the ball.
8:56 In this case, the baserunner heading to first base is in a forceout scenario since he is obligated to run to first base. For a forceout, the fielder simply needs to have possession of the ball and be touching the base by any means before the baserunner reaches it. This is in contrast to a tagout scenario where the baserunner is moving about on their own accord and must be physically tagged with the ball or a glove holding the ball while not touching a base to be put out.
To answer your question about throwing a runner out, the fielder making the put-out (in this case the first baseman) must either have his foot on the base when he receives the throw BEFORE the runner arrives at the base, or tag the runner before the runner reaches the base. This applies at all bases in case of a "force out". A force out is when the runner in jeopardy is "forced" to run, either by being the batter or by having a base runner behind him who is also advancing. For instance, if there is a runner on first and the batter hits a ball to the third baseman, the third baseman can throw it to second base to "force" the runner who is attempting to advance from first to second, out, since he has to run, because the batter is entitled to first base. In cases of NON force outs, like if a batter is trying to advance from first to second on his own hit, or if a runner on first attempts to then advance from second to third on a hit, then the fielder making the put out must physically tag the runner with the ball or the ball-in-glove to record the out, before the runner reaches the base.

It was an incredibly fun game to watch. USA players were out in front pulling everything that game. Klay Thompson's brother had a great game. That 20-year-old catcher is great. It looks like Team Great Britain ran out of pitching against Canada.
So, the first GB Home Run was definitely an American who plays for the Dodgers. His father, Mychal, was a professional basketball player. His brother is Klay Thompson. But Mychal Thompson was born in the Bahamas before independence so was a British subject.
That said, 6-2 with a bunch of guys from A-ball and independent leagues is a great result for GB.
Would definitely love to see more WBC reactions! The Korea-Australia game this year was nuts! And the Mexico-Columbia game! And man, Japan is a real powerhouse this year, I’m honestly a bit scared for my boys against them despite the US being the defending champs

In this clip it looks like there was no play, all runners were going to be safe easily, so there was no reason to rush a throw which could result in a throwing error.
Another situation, similar to this, is called “looking back the runner”, where the fielder holds the ball and stares at the runner(s), essentially daring them to try to advance on him. He would do this when the runner(s) has already started towards the next base, but the fielder has the definite advantage. 99% of the time the runner retreats. It’s also a very helpful move when there are multiple runners on base, looking back each runner so neither advances, instead of making a snap throw and having one runner take advantage of that by advancing.

I was at that game and I can say that Great Britain played really well. Take away the errors and that game was much closer than 6-2.

8:58 Yes the fielder has to either be touching the base when he catches the ball, or he can catch the ball and try to tag the runner with his glove before the runner gets to the base. Catching the ball in and of itself has no effect. Also, they MUST tag the runner, even if they're touching the base, in a situation where the runner isn't being "forced" to go to that base (i.e. if the runner could, theoretically, decide to turn around and go back to their previous base, you have to tag them to get them out).
On touching the base or the runner: at first base, all of the plays are tied to the base - the fielder (usually the first baseman) must touch the bag while in possession of the ball. Most tag plays (tagging the runner) at first base will happen because of an errant throw where tagging the runner is the best option to get the batter (runner) out.
Another tag play is when the pitcher throws to the first baseman (rather than pitching to the catcher at home) in an attempt to catch the runner at first base. Generally, the runner will take a lead (stepping towards 2nd base about two or three strides from first base) If the pitcher throws to first, the first baseman must tag the runner before the runner touches first base in order to record an out. The same can happen with a throw to any other base (second base or third base) by the pitcher.
The other circumstances for a tag versus a bag (base0 play are generally defined by whether someone occupies the base behind the runner in question.
In order for it to be a touch the base play, all bases behind the runner in question must be occupied. In other words, if the ball is grounded to a player with men on first and second, the fielder could throw to third base where the third basemen only has to receive the ball and touch the bag for what is called a force out (in other words, the runner is "forced" to that base because of the runners behind him). The third baseman, in turn, could throw to second base or first base to get another out, as long as the ball is received and the base is touched by the receiving player before the runner touches the base.
If there isn't an opportunity for a force out, then the runner must be tagged (rather than the base). Let's say there's a runner on second base when a ground ball is batted. The fielding player could throw to third base but the runner would have to be tagged after the receiver has control of the ball and before the runner tags first base.
Deciding which base to throw to is super important. Yes, sometimes they have to pause a split second to figure out the best strategy, and sometimes they double-clutch, or throw to the wrong base 😂

If you look at the top left corner of the screen, you will see a box. it can tell you if one team is on a base. Plus the number of outs, pitch count like 3 balls 1 strike, and so on. whats the score? look at the box. I think it comes from the olde days scorebroads the one in the park showing the fans whats going on. The olde days like before electric, manual scorebroad.

Honestly, the main reason outfielders will relay the ball in slowly is just that there's no play to be made.
For instance, a player can generally go from 1st to 3rd on a simple base hit to the short outfield, but he's very rarely taking that hit home. So rather than fire a ball in that might end up off line when there's little chance the runner's gonna test him there, he'll take his time and throw in an accurate ball.
The vast majority of the time, you know where you're going with the ball before it's hit. For instance, if I'm a center fielder and there's a man on 2nd with no outs, I know I'm throwing home on something that drops in front of me, 2nd base if I have to range back for it. If I'm an infielder, on a ground ball, I'm looking the runner back to the base, then going to 1st for the force out.
Regarding force outs- If a runner has the option of returning to a previous base, the runner must be tagged. If he cannot return to a previous base becasue either it's home plate or a teammate is occupying it, the defender need only tag the base while in posession of the ball. This is called a "Force out."

Great vid. I am sure you will get a ton of instruction for the rules but in regards to base running. If it's a forced out, it means that the defense only needs to touch the base with the ball in their possession to get the runner headed to that base out. This happens when the runner must run to the next base. If the runner can stay on their current base and they attempt to run to the next, the defender must "tag" (with the ball) the runner. Touching the base (by the defender) does nothing.

4:46 Based on my own my experience in center field, hesitation to throw the ball is about judging the risk of an errant throw. Since childhood, my coaches always drilled into my head to be aware of the baserunning situation and know where you'll throwing to before the ball is even pitched, so I wouldn't say there's much hesitation about where to throw. However, you do need to gauge whether the reward of throwing out a running outweighs the risk of making a far throw that could be off target and allow the baserunners to advance even further. You need to check if the infielders are in position to accept the throw and how much you trust your arm that day.

4:56 Fielders only throw it back quickly if they know there's a shot at throwing the runner out. In this case, the runner was at 2nd before the center fielder got the ball and wasn't trying for 3rd, so there was no reason to risk a throwing error on a quick throw back in.
9:00, the defender needs to be touching the base + holding the ball before the runner gets there to record an out. If he has the ball but the runner touches the base before he does the runner will be safe.
This only works on "force outs" where the runner doesnt have a legal base to run backwards too. This includes all plays at first base (you cant run back to home) or any play at another base where the previous bases are all full of runners. (For example you are a runner on first base and someone hits it into play, you cannot run backwards to first since the batter needs to go there. Then you could be "force-outed" at second base but not third.
If the play is not a force out (i.e. the runner can stay where he is or run backwards) then the defender must actually tag the player with the ball. To round it to another example on the play in question, the runner at first is a force out(just need to touch base with the ball) but if they tried to get the runner going home out, they'd have to actually tag him with the ball since he could go back to third base.
They were really hammering that third base line in this game.
If the first baseman catches the ball but the runner has already tagged the base, the baseman cannot tag the runner out unless the runner makes a try for second (i.e. the runner can return to first safely). This is the only base where this rule applies.

Side note, if the runner makes a move like he was going to go to second base after crossing first base, he can be tagged out for "trying to take an extra base".

I noticed that the US team were really pulling the ball down the third base line, so they were getting around on the GB pitchers, meaning these guys have a lot less speed on their pitches than Major League guys.
One thing you might be interested in is that West Ham United, the famous soccer club, at one time had a baseball team that was very popular and drew big crowds. This was in the 1930's. A book was written on the West Ham Baseball Club, and they point out that during the 1930's, baseball had started to make genuine in-roads into gaining popularity in Britain and might have grown into a high level professional sport, but that the war put an end to that, and afterwards baseball never recovered. West Ham was the "Yankees" of British baseball. One possible reason for this brief period of popularity is that it seems that King George V had watched Americans and Canadians playing baseball during World War One, and became an enthusiastic fan of the sport. Sounds odd, but it seems to have been true.

On first base runners can over run the bag and turn towards foul ground and not be tagged out . All other bases if it a face which means runners have to go to the next base you just need to tag the bag, no force you have to tag runner while he is off the bag

Well done, guys, this was enjoyable. Your instincts were correct, by the way: when a fielder gets the ball that's been hit and throws the ball to the first baseman, the first baseman needs to be touching the base when he gets the throw for the hitter to be out. If the hitter gets to first base before the throw, he's safe, or if (as in the video) the throw is wide of the mark and pulls the first baseman off the base, the runner will be safe. Unless the first baseman somehow manages to get the wild throw and touch the base before the hitter gets there. Also, you're right that when an outfielder gets the ball and seems to pause before throwing it back to the infield, it's because he sees the runner or runners are reaching the base they were going to already, so he's just making sure they don't try to keep going to the next base before he tosses the ball back to the infield. If a runner was trying to take an extra base, he would throw the ball to whichever base the runner was trying to get to so that the defender there could have the ball there first and tag the runner out.

The first baseman has to be on the base when the ball is thrown to him before the runner reaches the base or he has to tag the runner before he reaches the base, which is why on the first throwing error that was high you saw the first baseman jump to catch the ball taking him off the base and he tried to swing his glove down quickly and tag the runner which would still be an out, but the runner slid under the tag.
That’s about all there is to know. The runner can overrun first base unlike other bases. So it can be a dead sprint without having to stop right on the base. They just can’t turn like they are going to second or they can be tagged out. That may be something to keep in mind.
Other little oddities can come up like interference or the base runner not staying in the field of play but those are quite rare and I wouldn’t worry about them now.
