    The worst trade that comes to mind is the Vikings trading loads and loads of assets to the Cowboys for star running back Herschel Walker. Walker ended up having only a few middling seasons for Minnesota while Dallas was able to leverage those picks to create one of the best dynasties in NFL history.

      Right up there with that one has to be Mike Ditka trading every single one of his draft picks in 1999 plus more in 2000 for RB Ricky Williams, who ended up leaving in about 3 years for Miami anyways. The Saints would go on to be thoroughly mediocre at best for almost a decade after, in large part because of all the talent they passed on for Williams.

    • @brandilewis711
      @brandilewis711 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah, Saints trading their 1999 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 2000 1st, 3rd to Washington to get the 5th overall selection netting Ricky Williams. The most atrocious thing about this trade was the ESPN magazine cover showing Ricky Williams in a Wedding Dress and Mike Ditka in a Tux standing behind him lol

    • @TheStapleGunKid
      @TheStapleGunKid ปีที่แล้ว

      Let's not forget Robert Griffin III. Washington traded 3, yes 3 first round picks to get him, plus one second round pick. Griffin had a superb rookie season, but suffered a horrible injury in the playoffs, made much worse by coach Mike Shanahan's terrible decision to keep him in the game for a long time after he received it. Griffin played just two more lackluster seasons in Washington and spent the rest of his career as backup before retiring in less than a decade.

    I'd suggest you watch one of Tree's videos where he revisits a draft years later. You can see what teams were thinking at the time and how those picks actually turned out. Some are franchise changing. Either your pick becomes a superstar, or management gets replaced for getting it wrong. A revisit of the 2017 draft for example might be a fun video to watch.

    widely regarded the worst trade ever is between the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings for running back Herschal Walker in 1989. the trade ended up to bad, the picks Dallas accrued in the trade essentially paved the way for their dynasty in the 90s.

  • @thebulky1
    @thebulky1 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I have watched a bunch of your reactions so far, so obviously I'm entertained, so thank you. You guys understandably have a lot of questions about American football. It's probably already been said, but the real key to the sport is the line of scrimmage. Yes the QB and other skill positions get all the love. But the game is played and won in the trenches. Every game is a good example, but the first Giants vs. Patriots superbowl might be one of the best examples.

    • @thebulky1
      @thebulky1 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And by the line of scrimmage, I mean the offensive and defensive linemen mostly. Of course, tight ends backs and even wide receivers can play blocking roles, but the core of the line of scrimmage is like I said before. O and D linemen. Their performance generally determines the ability for the skill players to have the freedom to do their thing.

    The Chiefs got to host the draft this year, so they had the rare opportunity to take another victory lap for winning the Super Bowl on national television in front of the country. The man who announced their 1st Round Pick is the Chiefs owner Clark Hunt. His father Lamar Hunt was the original owner of the Chiefs and is the man responsible for creating the name “Super Bowl” to refer to the AFC-NFC Championship Game.

    Great reaction. For folks to understand how good or bad a team does in a given draft, there needs to be a follow up in two or three years or more after those players were selected. These days we get "instant" draft grades from people who have no idea if the players contribute to their respective organizations in a meaningful way. Some Hall of fame players took a few years to develop. Some players that do not get drafted, actually become Hall of Famers.
    As far as trading in the draft, there is an NFL draft trade chart that outlines what picks are worth given the round and number selected. For example, a round 1 first pick is worth 3000 points, while a round 2 first pick (Pick 33 in all) is around 580 points. There seems to be a pattern of trading draft picks for draft picks that equal to about the same point value of the pick. If a team traded the 1st round, 7th pick (1500 points), they would generally get that in return. I have yet to figure out how much teams gets in draft compensation if a player from their roster is included in that deal. I guess that would be subjective.

    Trades can practically happen at any time in the year with 1 exception.
    During the season sometime around the first week of November is the trade deadline. After this day through the End of the Super Bowl no players may be traded. Picks may be swapped at any time, but generally only happen during the draft.
    Outside of that stipulation trades can happen at any time.
    Player trades are typically a player for X amount of draft picks. Player for player trades do happen but are rare.
    Draft pick swaps are very common, but generally only happen during the draft.
    When teams swap picks it's almost always because there is a particular player available to be drafted that the team really wants.
    Trading picks for somebody's 3rd round pick before the draft isn't something you'll generally see since teams won't know if a player they want will be available.

    95% of the time they don’t look happy is because the camera is delayed, so their pick wasn’t announced yet. You should watch the 2022 rose bowl between Ohio State and Utah. There is a trade deadline, November 1st which is week 9 (of 18). No trades until the offseason window opens week 15. And you can trade future draft picks 3 years into the future. So, if you want to trade a pick at the week 9 deadline to add some talent to make a run, similar to in FIFA getting a player on loan, to a team that is in a "rebuild" and has no chance of winning and would rather have the extra draft picks. The problem is, you don't know where they'll finish, so you don't know what pick that will end up being.
    For example:
    In 2021 the Lions traded Matthew Stafford to the Rams for Jared Goff, 2021 3rd round pick, 2022 1st rd, 2023 1st round.
    The trade was made before the 2021 draft, so the Lions already knew the 2021 3rd round pick was pick 101 bc the 2020 season was over. The 2022 and 2023 1st round picks were unknown future picks. The Rams won the superbowl in 2021, so the 2021 1st rounder ended up being pick 32 (the lions would trade this pick to move up to pick 12 for Jameson Williams). In 2022, Stafford got injured and the Rams were awful, the Lions ended up with pick 6 (which, as you saw, they traded to move back to pick 12, took Jahmyr Gibbs and received pick 34 as well).
    So, yes. Lots of movement. Trading future picks. You can actually make it a conditional pick, which is like we'll give you a 4th rounder, but if he plays 75% of the plays, we'll give you a 3rd rounder. It can get wild. Especially on draft day. The GMs have been in contact for months talking about potential trades tho, so, all the scenarios are already worked out going into the day.

    Hello boys. Parts of the beauty of this video is just to witness the spectacle the draft has become. I remember the days when you would read about the draft in the newspaper on the Sunday after the draft. Nowadays there are draft parties all over the country where fans get together by the tens of thousands to cheer and wait for their team to make its selection. Every tavern and bar here in Seattle will be standing room only whilst broadcasting the draft on half on every TV in the building. Its a real party atmosphere. Food, drinks and fans in jersey's with high hopes for successful draft and an improved team. And if you are very lucky, a trip to the playoffs.

  • @KevinQuinn81
    @KevinQuinn81 ปีที่แล้ว

    7:10 - Trades of any kind (player for player, player for draft picks, draft picks for draft picks) are allowed from the start of the league year (usually the beginning of March ) until the trade deadline which is usually the end of October or beginning of November. They can negotiate year-round and come to terms any time but it can't be made official until that period. Pure draft pick swaps could also happen as stated above but are usually reserved for draft day or in the days before.
    7:53 - The Cowboys sending Herschel Walker to the Vikings for an absolute butt ton of draft picks in 1989 is widely regarded as the worst NFL trade ever. Walker only declined from that point and Dallas proceeded to use most of the picks they got to draft key pieces to a team that went on to win 3 Super Bowls in 4 years in the 90's. The second worst might be the time the Saints traded up in the draft from 12th to 5th to draft Ricky Williams who had good moments but would never live up to the hype or the cost. Funnily enough, U-Tree made videos about both before this year's draft..th-cam.com/video/H13FlFvDXN0/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/hT9ZqpkKxZk/w-d-xo.html
    26:23 - Tree actually does a series of draft reaction videos before each draft of the draft 5 years prior to see how the picks of that draft truly panned out. Here's his most recent one on the 2018 Draft. th-cam.com/video/_mPM7iGxfxE/w-d-xo.html
    26:45 - This was the first time in my memory that pretty much every team's fans could be satisfied with their draft. It could be said that the Dolphins had the worst draft because they lost their 1st Round pick due to violations of league rules and had traded away a bunch of other picks for Tyreek Hill and ended up with picks in only rounds 2, 3, 6, and 7. The Broncos had also traded a bunch of picks for Russell Wilson and only had 5 total.

    7:10-8:00 To answer your question on trades, in club football terms, the NFL has basically one long transfer window instead of 2 shorter transfer windows.
    Unlike club football transfer windows which are limited to a 3 month pre-season window and a 1 month mid-season window, NFL teams can trade players + draft picks with each other at any time from when the new NFL league year starts until the trade deadline around midseason. In 2022, for example, NFL teams could trade with each other from the 16th of March to the 1st of November, meaning teams could trade with each other for roughly 7 months straight.
    As for worst trades, one of the worst is the Herschel Walker trade. Tree actually did a video on that exact trade. I highly recommend it.
    (Also note: I'm an American who just started watching Premier League this year and I'm still learning about club football and the rules about transfer windows. Hopefully what I said about the transfer windows above is accurate. If I'm wrong anywhere, please let me know. I'd love to learn more.)

    Some clarifications:
    Firstly with the RBs. Gibbs and especially Bijan are both phenomenal players, RB is just not a valued position now because there a lot of talented backs and people have had success getting guys in late rounds. The contracts for RBs are also lower, so you aren't saving much money draft a Rookie RB compared to even an expensive veteran. Meanwhile the right O-Line and playcalling can make almost any decent back really good, and bad line/coaching make a great back produce nothing. Bijan and Gibbs could both easily be top 12 college talent, but thats not how Draft value works.
    As far as the trades, if theyre saying they get a first or a third that means first round or third round. They'll see "#1 overall pick" or "#3 overall" if they're talking about the literally first pick of the Draft and so on. You can technically trade picks pretty much year round, but the Draft order is determined by record from the previous season. The worst team picks #1, SB Champ picks last every round (#32). So it's kind of worthless to swap first round picks for example when you don't know what position 1-32 that will land. The only time you really see picks traded during the year is for players already in the NFL, but say the team gets a future first rounder for a current star player, they don't know exactly where in the first round that pick will land until the season is concluded. So moving up in the Draft only happens from after the season up until the Draft, and most of it is concentrated to the 1-2 weeks before the Draft and Draft Night itself.

    The players are not sad during the draft. They are so emotionally drained with joy, that they are almost in tears.
    ...By the way, a lot of people think the 1989 Hershel Walker trade was the worst. Hershel Walker was arguably the "best college running back ever" and was also an underappreciated professional player. A reaction to his life should be considered.

    The draft trades can happen prior to draft however that’s very rare. Only if you trading for first pick (for example ka there did it). That’s because you don’t know the circumstances throughout the draft you don’t want to trade for no reason ahead of time if that scenario never takes place. You may want to wait as the draft is happening and trade during the draft.

    Draft picks are kind of like currency. Typically they're traded during or leading up to the draft. During the season they're usually only traded in tandem with a player to sweeten the deal in getting another player. There is a trade deadline during the season, all American pro sports have this.

    Whilst trading picks can be discussed 365 days a year, there are certain time they are allowed to happen. However, trading before what you don't have or what you need or how good a pick can be is a tough one and why most of this "horse trading" happens between end of the season and up to minutes before your trade time is over. Watch, Draft Day to help with some understanding.

    The lions draft is hard to define in traditional ways. At the end of the day they got good players that'll make an impact right away. Instead of going after the best player available or trying to fill needs, Lions GM Brad Holmes opted to get players he liked, that fit the culture, and had good tape regardless of positional value.
    You should really check out HBO's Hard Knocks from last season, the culture in the Lion's den is unlike anything i've seen in pro sports

Draft picks only get traded on draft day generally and they can trade future draft picks so it can seem like a lot but its from previous years trades. You would be surprised but it's a lot less common to trade in the NFL than in MLB.

    2 worst trades, the Herschel Walker trade (A good but peaked Running Back that was traded for a boatload of picks the ended up becoming the core of the 1990's Dallas Super Bowl teams). The other that comes to mind is the Ricky Williams deal. The New Orleans Saints traded their entire draft to get one guy, he was good, but had an odd and unusual career.

    The Lions got awarded the kickoff game against the Chiefs this year. Every year since I believe 2002, the league starts off the NFL season with a single nationally-televised Thursday night game before the full slate of week one games the following Sunday. The home team is always the previous year’s Super Bowl winner, and they do a ceremony before the game where all the players get their Super Bowl rings, and they raise the championship banner to the rafters. And since it’s the first game of the season, the league tries to pick a team that they think will give the champs a good entertaining game to kick off the season. While the Lions started last season 1-6, they drastically turned things around and went 8-2 in their last 10 games, and just barely missed the playoffs. And even though they got eliminated from playoff contention literally about a half an hour before their final game at Green Bay, they still went out and beat the Packers on national TV to keep them out of the playoffs as well, and also ended Aaron Rodgers’ Green Bay career by intercepting his last pass as a Packer. Also, this is the first time ever that a team who didn’t make the playoffs the previous year got selected for the kickoff game. Basically, the Lions are the hot new team to root for coming into the season. I know I’ve commented this before, but if this is going to be your first official season properly following the NFL, you have to pick a team - it’s just more fun if you have a rooting interest. And you could do a lot worse than being Lions fans right now. You’re going to want to be on that bandwagon when they finally win their first Super Bowl!
    Also, I’m loving the content - it’s always fun to get an outsider’s perspective on things. Definitely had to subscribe. Keep up the good work fellas!

      Thanks Benjamin, great read of the comment and love the stats and support! Ironically I’m following a team from either division and they happen to be Chiefs and Lions 😂 Chiefs because my love of Mahomes, even during my first ever game, the Super Bowl, I was drawn to Mahomes. And Lions because I have a soft spot for Detroit. They’ve had some bad luck in a lot of our watches on this channel and it’s endeared me to them

    • @Imsosorrytrash
      @Imsosorrytrash ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DNReacts See, that’s what I’m talking about! Everyone loves an underdog story. Look at all the best Hollywood sports movies - what’s the connective fiber that makes them all the same? Underdog stories! There would be no sports cinema without an underdog. And in America, the Lions are the ultimate underdogs. Also y’all have definitely done well in your studies, because you are correct: Patrick Mahomes is an absolute badass. Y’all get a lot right for not being from here.
      God I’m going to be so embarrassed if they go 5-12 or something. Although history would say that’s much more likely. But that’s all a part of being a fan of the Detroit Lions. The disappointment. Surely there’s an equivalent team in European Football. If you don’t like disappointment, then going with the Chiefs is probably a better lane to go down.

    The Bijan Robinson pick was a huge surprise because running backs aren't considered valuable in the modern NFL. Even the best ones tend to only have a few elite seasons, while mediocre running backs are generally sufficient for a successful offense since the game is so much more oriented around the pass and running quarterbacks these days. It's virtually unheard of now for a running back to be elected with a top 10 pick as Robinsons was.

    • @mikefitzgerald6897
      @mikefitzgerald6897 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the past getting a lead and running the clock out with a posesión back was a winning strategy. In the new rules the yellow laundry will tend to frustrate dominating defenses and favor teams that throw downfield. It makes for exciting games that are decided in the final moments, but diminishes the roll of a franchise RB.

      It can help to think of both players and future draft picks as 'assets' that each team has as they each have some value. They can mix and match whichever type of asset they want when proposing/accepting trade offers. Not in the NFL, but in some other sports you can also use cash when trading -- which I think makes sense since it is clearly an asset with value.

    But the worst in my opinion were the Saints who traded first, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh round picks in 1999, along with first and third round picks in 2000, to Washington for a running back Ricky Williams who was on the team for like 3 seasons.

    Nick Caserio is not in any way close to losing his job. He's done great rebuilding the Texans from the shit show they were in. The previous years he didn't have his head coach of the future or hardly any picks. Now that he has Meco Ryans his track record matters. Those previous seasons can't be held over him they were tanking and not trying to win at all. You can't hold the GM accountable for not winning with David Culley and washed Lovie Smith. Just a bad uninformed take by UT. But hes a meme generator. He doesn't actually follow the ins and outs of these teams.

    I see everyone mentioning the Walker trade between the Vikings and Cowboys, so I'll mention perhaps the second worst trade in which the Saints traded every single pick they had in that draft, and two more high picks the next year to move up from #12 to #5 to select Ricky Williams. Williams only played three middling season for the Saints. He did eventually turn into a really good running back for the Dolphins, but his career was plagued by suspensions because he wouldn't stop smoking that ganja. He even retired from football prematurely so he could continue to smoke. He came back a year later, but was still smoking. Anyway, he could have been one of the all time greats, but the off the field problems did seem to stunt his growth as a player quite a bit.

    Most recent questionable trade was san Francisco 49ers traded there first round pick of 2021, 12th overall, first and third round picks of 2022, and first round pick of 2023. For the 3rd overall pick in 2021, in which they drafted qb trey lance. So 3 first round picks and a third round pick for one first round pick. Being that niners are so good that both the delayed first round picks both fell to the 29th spot. So its really pick 3 overall for a 12 that year, a 29th each of the next two years and the 3rd rounder was somewhere in the 70s

And he is a physical freak, way more than *any* QB that's *ever* been in the NFL. He's also got an insane work ethic and is highly intelligent. His only rational knock was that he's so inexperienced it causes him to be up and down.

    They said that Pittsburgh was able to move up to 14 without giving up much. There's a reason for that. The Patriots originally had the pick. Bill Belichick who is the head coach and de facto general manager for the Patriots, was once the defense coordinator and assistant head coach for the NY Jets. When Bill Parcell stepped down has HC at the end of the 1999 season, Bill Bel nick was named as his replacement. On the following day at what we supposed to be Belo buck's introductory press conference, he instead handing in a napkin with " I resign as HC of NYJ" and signed has HC of their division rivals, the Patriots a few days later. To bring this home, he's taken every opportunity to screw over the Jets including this draft in which he traded down from one spot ahead of the Jets to the spot below them for less compensation then he should've gotten because he knew the Steelers were picking the last of the 4 elite Offensive Tackles available in the draft, which happens to be the Jets biggest need.
