  • UPDATE - PART 2 is here!!! • [Part 2] Easiest Begin...
    Hi everyone!
    Just wanted to make a really simple tutorial for beginners to get started with portrait painting on Procreate. If you do not have facetune you can always just skip that part and go straight into tracing at 4:45
    DISCLAIMER - for those of you who don’t watch the entire video and kept insisting that it’s copying/cheating/ fraud etc without listening to my explanation I feel compelled to explain again. In a painting process there’s a couple of stages -
    1. Getting familiar with the software is Procreate
    2. Drawing
    3. Grayscale
    4. Color
    5. Brushwork
    6. Finishing
    this method involves tracing and color picking which takes away the learning process of drawing, grayscale and color stages so that you can focus on learning the software, brushwork and finishing. It shouldn’t be used as a crutch forever but a good way to get started and learn from this process. If you are interested in learning the hard way you can watch my other tutorials not labeled as beginner. Leaving negative comments would discourage other artists wanting to start from zero. I will not be replying any negative comments. Don’t wanna keep repeating and explaining myself.
    Enjoy the tutorial today!
    Please credit me if you use my brushes or color palettes!
    Beginners, pls watch the Procreate basic series if you're new to procreate.

    I think a lot of you are missing the point.
    This is not a "Learn how to draw" tutorial.
    This is a "Learn how to use Procreate" tutorial.
    Tracing is just to make the overall project simpler.
    The main point is to get more familiar with procreate features such as various palettes and brushes.
    Also doing it this way lets you get more comfortable with drawing on a tablet which is very different.
    I'm a designer - but I don't draw at all.
    This tutorial is perfect for helping me get more comfortable with procreate and eventually using it as an app to sketch and eventually learn to draw.

      It is good for procreate learning, but it is definetly not a portait tutorial as mention in title. Just an other clickbait. I was hoping to understand more about portraits. But this is just someone telling us how they study portait instead of teaching us how to actually make one. This kind of video is my daily drawing study. Good things about color, values and else.

      Olive Oil Yeah, the art community is super toxic. People with this sort of black and white view of tracing can be found all over Twitter, DeviantArt, Tumblr, etc. It’s funny, because I most commonly find that these people have never received any sort of formal training or drawn professionally. Art theft is certainly an issue when art is actually being stolen and profited off of, but nowadays I’m finding more often than not, people are being vilified for doing something that is essentially studying.

    I personally don't think tracing is "cheating" because from my point of view, it's like when they teach you the alphabet in school. First you trace the letters and then slowly you learn to do it yourself. Think of it that way

      @Monokm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +411

      @@erljohnbersamin2970 but its not just the face. You can break the face down into the eyes, mouth, nose, view point, and shading and once youve practiced them enough you should be good to start practicing without em. So really you are only tracing 5 key points (maybe more maybe less) unlike the 100 you claim. Sure theres all kinds of faces and shapes but you only need the essentials to go out there and try on your own (even if it looks bad). Quit discouraging people.

    I know some artists call this an incorrect way to learn but personally for me, I’ve grown a lot from doing this instead of just reading the same rules over and over again but failing to apply those to my art work. Through this way, I can see the correct values and ways to structure the anatomy. It’s given me more results in a few months than I did studying for a year! So I was super happy to see you do this tutorial! Though it’s not for everyone as we all learn in different ways 😁

      @@solveigfrank Tracing is ok if you are a beginner, you slowly learn proportions and values. But this is helpful only as a beginner, after that you can pass to a real-life copy who is a lot more difficult but will teach you more. Also, this tutorial is literally copying the same colours it isn't even teaching you how to create your values etc, for example, if you want to increase the difficulties and learn more about the light you could use different colours and increase the contrast. copyng and tracing are fine if you are a beginner but doing this is on a computer make it toooooo much easy, that is why is better to trace and copy from a picture and using real colors, that will teach you more than doing this.

    Thinking I was “cheating” by tracing has kept me from drawing and even learning for many years. I felt guilty and like I was betraying an entire community, but I think people should understand that part of learning is tracing and color sapling like this. It teaches you aspects of drawing in an easier way.
    This helped be patient with myself enough to begin to learn. Thank you so much for this tutorial!

      You shouldn't feel guilty, I don't understand why people are getting so mad about it. It's a great way to learn and as a beginner I'm also doing it. Even if you have used 'tracing', that doesn't mean that is super easy to draw something, it still takes time and effort and you need to have some kind of skills to make it look good.

      I totally understand. I had NO art training or experience 15 yrs ago. I found that recreating a picture I loved, often tracing for certain shapes, helped me learn so much. IAMSOUND99 but you also learn from it, for example I could NEVER find a color on the color-wheel for skin that looked natural, but once I tried copying some colors from portraits or other paintings I began to recognize how skin colors look and what colors to blend together. I also started to recognize proper proportions by tracing various faces and bodies and beginning to notice the patterns. I also learned where the shadows would be depending on where the light is. For example, in nearly every portrait I traced, their was a shadow on the neck. Before the tracing, I’d never realized that chins or lips would create shadows or that eyelashes are curled downwards and then upwards rather than extrude straight from the eyelid. There are a lot of other patterns I’ve learned, such as how the hair should fall depending on the position of the face and so on.

    I think this is a really important video for many beginner artists and even those wanting to venture into semi-realism art. So many people say that using references and stuff is cheating but it really isn’t, you SHOULD be using references every chance you get when you’re studying art, it’s the best way to learn the correct proportions, shading, and shapes of body parts and features. You could “draw off your imagination” but 9/10 that really doesn’t get you anywhere because you don’t have the basics down to venture off from. Build your basics first through references, tracing, because over time once you have that down you can use your imagination to create visually pleasing art and it just becomes easier to draw anything once you’ve studied light sources, shading, and basic body features! 💞💞 it’s the key to progressing in your art, especially if you feel like you haven’t improved by much over the years or you want to polish your technique.

    This is a tutorial for beginners who need to figure out procreate before they can start doing their own artwork. I think this is a great way to get comfortable with the app. Even for me as an art student, I had some trouble with the app in the beginning, not knowing how to use the brushes the best way possible. But if you use this technique in the beginning it helps you figure out how to use the brushes and figuring out your preferences. Obviously after a while you need to graduate into making your own art, using a reference picture as just a reference picture and slowly learning to use your eyes and even the grid feature instead of tracing. And honestly, especially if it’s from a reference picture, sometimes tracing the skeleton just saves time to get to the same starting point faster. From there you can change the colors, values, etc... I personally like changing the color palette of reference pictures but I’ll start with a trace. Sometimes I’ll trace my own art if I want to change something or make a variation. Although when drawing on paper, it’s better to learn how to draw from your eyes, with digital art I feel like it’s very different as you can’t use the same techniques between the two platforms.

    Tracing is never cheating - it’s just a stepping stone in the process of learning to do portraits in a more “traditional” way! You can even find sketches or construction lines from other people as the next step to trace! It really helps to develop your process

    Negative comments about her, doing it a certain way differs from how “experienced” artists do it, should be kept to a minimum.
    This is art. Art is supposed to be different. How one person does it and how another, should vary. There shouldn’t be so many “rules” or “right way” to create art. It kinda beats the whole purpose of “being creative” if we’re all supposed to follow the same shit.
    Everyone learns/does things differently.
    Just appreciate that she took the time to even record this and provide a lot of people with a free brush pack.

    For anyone feeling guilty it's called ”line art” let that be known and no can shame you okay lol also Walt Disney studios did this with their animations it's called ”rotoscoping” for tracing live films. It's normal it's just kept hidden because of people so judgemental. You traced the alphabet and cursive writing in school....so what the problem is lol. Live your life

    • @ZurditaDinamita
      @ZurditaDinamita 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course no one should to shame another for tracing, but it's important for beginners to know that this exercise just practice the brushstroke (just like the girl say in 13:10). No drawing, no anatomy, no color or values are developed here. So comparing with tracing the alphabet it's a mistake for me: you just can learn the letters tracing them, but you can learn brushstroke with a different, more enriching exercise.

    I am 13 and still a beginner. I don’t think tracing is necessarily bad. If you are training yourself, tracing is like training wheels. You have to understand what you are attempting to draw. Though, I don’t think you should share traces art as your own original piece. I’ve had friends who claim art as their won when it is clearly traced. If i ever trace I make sure I give credit. I mostly learned drawing from eye. I’m still learning. My strength is drawing portraits, and it does take a lot of practice and patience. I used to trace my reference images to understand proportions. Sooo yeah. Tracing isn’t bad if you are using it to learn or for personal use

    Lovely tutorial! In response to the comment section, I have to say I hate all the focus on tracing and whether its considered art or not. Even the people who defend it and say 'its okay for beginners!' irk me. IMO, who cares if somebody traces a photograph? Not everyone is interested in perfecting their anatomical/illustrative skills and just want to get right into painting, shading etc. And who cares if they post it on their social media? All this focus on what is original and safe to post and what isnt is very toxic and discouraging to people who just want to make art without following all these unspoken rules.

    • @censored2129
      @censored2129 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you want to color and shade a picture, get a coloring book. If you trace, you aren’t “creating” art. You literally didn’t create anything, you copied it. Tracing for practice is an easy learning technique. But it’s not art.

    • @hamsterbaby98
      @hamsterbaby98 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      censored coloring books are extremely limited in that I don’t get to control the line width or even paint realistically like I do drawing off of photographs. When I make art I like to render realistic digital paintings from photographs - you can’t tell me that by tracing the outline of someone’s face and then going through hours of painting it myself that I’m not creating art and just copying. It takes skill and technique to color and shade - just as this person did here. You can say it’s not completely original (of course) but again, as long as no ones entering their art in for competitions or trying to gain a following while lying about it then why should it matter? Sometimes art is just a hobby for people and nothing more.

    • @hamsterbaby98
      @hamsterbaby98 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      censored actually I really like your coloring book analogy. We accept coloring book art as “hobby” art and not really professional art. Yet, there are some people who create masterpieces from coloring books and we consider them to be true artist - even if this is the only thing they do. I think this could be a similar case. We can appreciate someone’s ability to shade and color realistically while acknowledging that they can’t actually draw for shit. It doesn’t have to be completely black and white. But this is just my opinion and I know very well 99% of people do not agree and I can see why. Anyway sorry for the long replies!

    I just wanna point out that not everyone learns the same way. So just because you feel like this beginners technique won’t teach people anything, (you may have learned anatomy and proportions, as well as color theory from textbooks) then that’s your learning style. Personally I learn more by doing VS reading and then doing studies. I get brain fog a lot, so this technique has been very helpful for me to practice (literally, all the colors were lighter and had a more grey tone than I thought which shocked me) and I’m slowly starting to realize that colors in an image may not reflect exactly the same. Many many colors and tones and variations go into creating a skin tone. I am growing, I just started getting into digital art (i would always draw things out of my head, however I SUCK at proportions and colors for skin, and I’m working on it slowly.) along with this technique, I still use my sketch book and I take classes on skillshare, and I have a big ol book on the human figure. It just depends on the person, please be kind to one another. We’re all apart of the art community ❤️

    I have to say this loud for the people in the back:
    TRACING
    IS NOT
    “CHEATING”.
    Tracing does not invalidate the art.
    Great artists have been tracing for hundreds of years.
    Art projectors, light boxes, pantographs and many. other machines through the years have been widely used to help artists”trace”. Computers and tablets and software are tools. Use them however you want.
    Procreate is specifically set up with reference layers so you can trace.
    You don’t have to trace, you can if you want, it’s all good.

  • @connieh1396

    I thing it's a great way to learn procreate. Tracing over a picture is correct to learn in my opinion. But the project of another artist, it's not correct if you are gonna post it on your social media right after it of course :). But for beginners (and I'm still a beginner in my opinion bc we can't do everything perfect!) I still advise to trace. I remember in high school of art and design, my teacher would always told us to copy and copy and copy again to learn the process you are recreating and learn the mouvements that your hand need to do.

  • @andradaolariu1612
    @andradaolariu1612 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I don`t get it why people get so offended and calling this cheating. Tracing's someones face for a sketch to get familiar with proportions isn`t cheating. You can totally change features after and you can totally use different color pallet to finish your painting. Cheating is when you trace someone's art and claim it to be yours (like a copycat). Some people are better at doing a painting even without a sketch, some people still learn, both are totally fine! Stop arguing about what method is better than the other, if something worked for you, i`m happy for you, but your method might not work for everyone. Everyone learns different.
    Haze did an amazing tutorial for people that still learn proportions and values.
    And I bet everyone that there is no artist in this world that didn`t even trace once in their lives. We all did that at least once. So stop playing the "saint" there.

    I've drawn portraits using graphite pencil and paper on and off for 20 years, but I've always found proportions and angles extremely challenging; I guess my brain just has trouble with them. Since I've started digital painting, I've traced. Even though I end up combining multiple references, changing things, using different colors, etc., I've been so terribly insecure about "cheating" that way. I can't tell you how much it means to see a video where someone does this. I honestly thought it was me being lame and lazy. Thank you for helping me start to think maybe it's okay. :)

    Sadly I don't have an iPad, or any drawing tablets whatsoever, unfortunately, I cannot afford one. But, I really want to do digital art, I've been drawing in sketchbooks for several years now. And, as a self taught artist, I want to get out of my comfort zone, and, explore digital art.
    I use ibsPaint on my phone, for digital art currently.
    And, since I want to use Procreate on an iPad someday, I want to learn as much as possible. I don't really find this tutorial as a cheat at all, as a matter of fact, it's very captivating. It is a good way to learn about shading, and anatomy. But, this technique shouldn't be used all the time, learning about different techniques is important. But, in my opinion, this technique is a really good technique to start off with. I really like this video, and, this channel, you have yourself a new subscriber!

      oh and btw do u have a pc?IF u do u can buy a huion tablet for just 30 dollars somewhere online. u cn find alot just by searching it actually. Its a good way to start on digital art bc u dont rlly need to hav an expensive tablet or ipad to draw digitally just like how you do in traditional. Im 13 and the only thing i cn afford with my lunch money is that

      The app I’ve used in the past is Infinite Painter (it’s free and works really well, pressure-sensitivity is built into the app so you don’t need the Apple Pencil, you can use any cheap stylus or even your finger and you’ll get the same varying line qualities) and it has many of the same features and you can use it on your phone! Plus it’s free! Not sure if it’s only available for iOS though or if it’s available for Android as well

    She said that tracing is alright but please, tracing others project is not ok, it can be called out for stealing.
    Edit: i was like 12 when i wrote this(14 now). Tracing is fine as long as you dont claim it as your own artwork. It could even help u out lmao very sorry for the false comment.

      Peacheyz in my opinion, as long as they don’t claim the artwork as their own and they trace it for the sake of practicing, its probably acceptable, since stealing would mean that they promote it and claim it as their own art.
      Everyone starts from zero. For example, I learnt to draw by tracing at first, then gradually I could manage on my own.
      Aaand you’re extremely right, stealing is really bad! But in this case, I believe she said tracing is alright because we’re using it as practice. =) Just don’t go flexing it online since people will say you’re stealing. x.x

    whenever i watch other peoples speed paints i usually see that most people don't zoom in when doing special details. I zoom in way too much and i thought it wasn't normal.

      Some speed paints don’t show the zooms, it just shows the results, so don’t sell yourself short. A lot of these you tubers zoom a lot but the program they are using doesn’t show that in the final speed paint video. Everyone zooms, especially if it’s an intricate piece.

      There's a problem for me in zooming that when I zoom I don't see the whole drawing and how it actuallh looks and often these details turn out to look good zoomed and absolutely unsettling when I zoom out.
