- hello there! If you don't know me, my name is Maria and I'm a 3rd year computer science major studying at York University in Toronto, Canada in the Shopify Dev Degree program.
I thought that it would fun to vlog my first ever virtual hackathon experience to show people what it's like going to online hackathons or hackathons in general! It's been almost a year since I went to a hackathon so this was a really interesting experience (and actually not as different from in-person hackathons as I thought)
...although I did miss the free food and the therapy dogs :(
I hope that this video makes you consider signing up for a hackathon and gives you some new ideas about working with a team online!
even though we didn't win this time, I still had an amazing experience working with my partners and I'm really happy with our final product!

Awww thank you!! You can see a lot of really cool and creative projects on the website devpost because that's where most hackathons get teams to post their projects. One time I saw one where a group made an app called "make me kanye" where it took a picture of you and then gave you one back with kanye's face with your facial expression or something like that 🤣 people can be very random at hackathons
They people with cold hands have warm hearts!
You know that sounds nice but I think you know that it doesn't apply to me 😆

Oh my gosh such good content!! We for sure need to do a hackathon together! Honestly without virtual hackathons I would not be able to do them at all. Another note: the hackathon i did last week gave us free food credits
THANK YOU 😭 I know what you mean because so many of the hackathons I wanted to go to before never had transportation to get there! Now we can do hackathons around the world. And omg I'm so jealous! What did you buy with the food credits?

Oh yeah it was for the open source fellowship! They didn't take me because they couldn't find a pod for me this term 😭 but they put me on their waitlist for another time. Did you do it before? 2 of my friends have

Hi where do you find hackathons? I am in Germany I barely find any
I don’t know about where to find them in Germany but I usually look at the MLH, Devpost, and Eventbrite websites to find hackathons and usually they are open to anyone in the world. There might also be some in person German ones too! Also I was just in Germany and it was great but soooo cold 🥲

No you do not! And yes you can take breaks and do other things

Ahaha yes sorry you're somehow not first this time! I found it through thr MLH website! Here is a link: mlh.io/seasons/2021/events. These are for university students I think but there are also other hackathons that I find on websites like eventbrite that are really cool

yo that's what a hackathon is all about! They have so many workshops for beginners and if your teammates are nice people then they'll teach you stuff too
