- You can find Cherabin (Giant Freshwater Prawns) at King Ash Bay during the wet season. And with Cyclone Lincoln closing in on King Ash Bay, I decide to try and catch some Cherabin to cook for dinner.

We used chicken pellets when I was working up in the Kimberly’s. Throw a handful out, wait 15 minutes, cast net them, repeat. The theory those guys had was if big ones were on the patch of bait they would fight off others. The guys I was with were also adamant that you will never get the really big ones in pots. Might be worth a shot.
Yea that sounds awesome. I might try it down at the boat ramp.
@@MikeyCunninghamFishing this was a fairly cherubin rich area up the gibb. But we did use pots with chicken pellets in the lower ord river and they liked that. They are literally barra lollipops haha.
That was so cool mate & I hope you enjoyed your dinner. Cheers Denise- Brisbane
Your meal looked lovely. Often see those in the drains around Durack 😊
We call these UDANG GALAH here in Malaysia, best to fish at night with rod and line.We usually will put out 5 rods spread out.We use earthworms, sea worms or tiny little shrimps to catch them over here.Just put small bait fish in your net trap and leave them overnight.Very good eating cook in curry.Yum yum yum.
The best baits I know of are any sweet baked vegetables like sweet potato (yam) soap bar or clean lard /lard soap
Chook pellets are the best in stockings or a stock...also if theres a slow running spot throw a handful in and wait then throw net over there make sure theres no snags lol
Hello from South Africa. When I was working for a Sugar company in Mozambique (West of Beira along the Pungwe river), they had a fresh water prawn grow facility just down stream of the effluent outlet, effluent in this case being sugar rich waste water from the sugar factory, The prawns were absolutely massive and have a rich, sweet meat. Your Cherubin made me yearn for the Pungwe prawns!
Suggestion: if you are looking for new content for your Merch, I think your favourite saying for Catfish, Sharks and nipping Crabs “Little Bastard.” 😂
I actually did make a design a while back that said "Bloody catfish. You bastard!" on it... Wasn't completely happy with the design so I just scrapped it.
@@MikeyCunninghamFishing I love your videos Mikey. I am working my way through them all. It feels like as a viewer you come to almost know all your characters like Ash, Mullet and Bullfrog. Keep them coming Mate. 👍
I just subscribed.
“Skutchie”, “stonkah”….i am learning so much! Thanks from Canada!
Feed fit for a king 👌👌 cheers Mikey! always an awesome watch!!
Met Anthony at moreton island a few years ago. Good bloke.
Hey Mikey if you add a dash of Worcestershire and cap and a half of Sweet Sherry to your garlic and cream the sauce is awesome.
wicked video as always mikey love ya work mate 👍🏼 always a good time when ya new videos pop up on the feed 👍🏼
Thanks for watching mate.
@@MikeyCunninghamFishing all good mate, been looking at coming to king ash bay when i can
Reminds me of when we used canned dog food as kids to cast net for shrimp.. damm that looked delicious!!!!!!
Yea mate... a lot of people saying dog food and/or soap in the comments.
We used velvet soap when I was working up in the Kimberly’s. It was made with lard / animal fat - worked a treat
Hello from USA watching my first video from your channel. I loved how you included cooking your catch; it looked amazing and made me so hungry (I love surf and turf). I do get confused sometimes about names for videos like this: shrimp, prawns, crawfish, yabbies, marron, red claws, lobster and etc. I don't think I have tasted all the different varieties but I pretty sure I would love them all. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to watching some of your other videos. I believe Australia has mud crab which would be similar to other names I have seen Dungeness, stone crab, blue crab, spider crab, etc. They all sound tasty, nonetheless. Take care.
Cheers mate. Thanks for stopping by and watching. 👍🏼
Love the video mate! Keep it up ay!👍🏼
I was a teenager in the 1970's when last at Borroloola. Caught half a dozen Cherubin at the river xing on the Burketown road. Simply waited with a torch and single prong fencing wire spear on the bridge and speared them as they came out of the pipe at turn of tide. Also caught a couple of nice Barra at the same spot.
Yea that crossing can be a magic place if you get the tides right and a bit of luck. Plenty of big Barra caught there every year even now.
Love your videos! Wish I could visit! Thanks Mikey!
Give sunlight soap a go, it works on the fresh water prawns in the darling river.
Yea mate... a lot of people saying dog food and/or soap in the comments.
Bing Bong was nice and windy for the last couple days lol good to see you still uploading some good videos bud 🤙🏾
Cheers mate... yea we survived. All good here at King Ash Bay.
love your work mate!
keep the vids coming .I was up in Cape york a few years back in Coen and we used sweet potato and dog biscuits to catch these yummy little critters . all the best .
Awesome mate 👍🇦🇺
Awesome session bloke
Yeeeww, yeahh Mikey those prawns blood huuuge mate, 4:51 sunny coast quick watch before work Yew!
Wow,fishing in the Australian northern territory, this is on my bucket list mate,Plenty of fish and crocs and snakes, when my finances are good, one day will meet up with you and go fishing, crabbing eh haha.
Just use soap so good.!the mad mullet 🤪🐟
Man, glad this came up. Those shrimp are insane! We mess with the brown and white shrimp here on the Gulf Coast Louisiana....They do like those Ruby Red shrimps over towards MS and AL , though. Our nasty ass water doesnt hold em!
Prawn not shrimp. While similar, are actually different species. Cherebrin are kind of a blend between marron and prawns.
@@michaelversace456 ummmm , actuallyyy...
@@ButterFadeGolf please, inform me. I am genuinely curious 🧐
Nice video mate . Try putting garlic cherabin in with bacon and egg in a wrap it's the go
Oh hell yes that sounds amazing.
Good one Matey Luv ya Vids.
Catching them with rod and reel is quite fun..
Great feed Mikey.
Place looks awesome when it's green like that.
Great video mate. Fresh water prawn NSW we have yebbies spelling wrong.
Mikey, you’ve just made me even more hungry mate 😊
Not gonna lie mate... it was pretty good. Haha
Nice work mate luv cherubim 👍👍
Stay safe budd 🤙
Thanks mate.
Hi Mike . Dinner looked great. May need new pluggers. Great video. Cheers from Adelaide
Yea I always have a backup pair on standby. Thanks for watching mate.
Used to use the plastic clips from bread packs for emergency plugger repairs. Worked a treat. Now they are all cardboard:(
Nice mate! 😊 For my traps I use chicken carcass etc.... I know, but here me out. Bag carcasses in the freezer. In another double bag, all relevant non processed food scraps in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. This can be banana but not peel, pineapple pieces if frozen before adding to the mix, slightly squashed peas, pumpkin, Take the carcass and pack it with scraps, add old bread only on the outer layers. Freeze it all in a bag with water.
Sounds like that would work good mate... and here I am using a plain old potato...
Mixture of sunlight soap (tallow) and dog biscuits. Biscuits work fast but don't last long, soap takes awhile. We used this method on the Roper River. When the river is running, put them in the still water, amongst grass and trees
Yea mate... a lot of people saying dog food and/or soap in the comments.
the old man used , pure velvet laundry soap, fat is what attracts them , same as yabbies, they are the cleaners and eat detritus , try some KFC next time
@@MikeyCunninghamFishing Hardest decision once you catch them, is deciding what's a barra lollipop and what's yours!
Awesome ep and Feed
Thanks mate.
No worries@@MikeyCunninghamFishing
Hi Mikey, I've caught some big ones at Tamato Island on the Roper River, if you hold the claws as well they can't bite. Great barra bait. Keep up the good work mate as well as the Pod casts. Hope to be back at King Ash later in the year, all the best Pete.
Cheers mate.
Great work mate 👍👍🔥🔥
Thanks again mate.
9:20 This guy must be a city boy
I think you are a bit hard on the old Hamper corned beef ,I love that stuff when I’m camping ,on dry bics with cheese but you chucked it all in the water
Love your vids cheers from down South
Enjoyed. Even though you sort of failed om the catch
That what makes great content, everything you tried.
Yea mate... against the elements too. Thanks for watching mate.
Many moons ago I was up north on exercise and we were waiting to be picked up by Air we found some pots (2) we used Soap (bar) and it worked very well
Try crushed Garlic buy in bottle from woolies put into a plastic jar inti pot 😊
Mate, Spent a bit of time on the Roper back in the day, sunlight soap was the winner, and the crocks didnt mess with it so you could leave em in for ages.
Probably doesn't smell bad like the rotting corned beef too. Haha
When I go to normanton camping we use dry dog food in a small juice or milk bottle full of holes, we usually get a dozen or more per pot every night, great chewing in reef and beef
Yea mate... a lot of people saying dog food and/or soap in the comments. Reef and beef is definitely a favourite of mine.
Great vid Mickey nice prawns,do you think the water will clear up by Easter?
Cheers
Whitey
Awesome mate
Got heaps at escott barra lodge years ago. The wet season washed them over the causeway so when the water slowed down they walk back across the causeway after dark. We just picked them up. Had to have a spotter to keep yourself off the menu. Big croc in that lagoon
That's the way to do it... no mucking around with pots and traps.
good stuff Cheers
Soap is also good
Epic vid!
Greetings from the BIG SKY. Prawns are tasty.
Soap always works great
Try dried coconut. It works most of the time here.
Heaps of them down the Logan river / Southern Moreton Bay. Fresh Water Shrimp. Make great live bait. The banana prawns are running in the bay atm also.
I once heard them described as “a dinner bell for Barramundi”
Good video, have never seen cherabin.
Yea, I had never heard of them until I moved to the NT. I went to visit the Mad Mullet yesterday afternoon and he had caught some even bigger than the ones I got. They had MASSIVE claws on them.
Doesnt get better than beef and reef. 👍
try dry dog food and put it in a sock or stocking that works a treat for me, and bacon rinds as well
Legend
Top shit mick.love it.the mad mullet 🐟🌴🍻🤪
Thanks for the Vid Mikey, much rather be up there in the wet than this absolute Mutt of a town called Sydney.
Move up ...we just moved to cairns ...mad ey
I have heard of a cake of soap in the trap
Dog food, Goodo’s dry food works a treat. Works well in Lakefield national park 🍻
Yea mate... a lot of people saying dog food and/or soap in the comments.
We used chicken pellets or non scented velvet soap up at Fitzroy Crossing in the 80s.
You will get them on Cat Fish or any fish frames as well
Awsome eating
Nice try bro..its better to fishing em few days after the storm ends ..just use worms and specific hook for freshwater prawns..im sure u will catch in kilos like what we do here at malaysia
Thanks for the tips mate.
Keep it up
Will do mate.
Thank the Lord God for his kindness in difficult times. Cheribum is an OT word for sea creature of the water. Also known as angels/caretaker's of the waters.
I like your "reef and Beef'
I used dim sims at a causeway beside my fathers house on Old Bynoe road in Berry Springs. Caught more on that than anything else.
And I’ve got an old pack of dimmys in the freezer too… I’ll need to try them mate.
Cooked carrots might be worth a try? for Cherabin.
We used Barra frames and Cat food worked great
very yummy meal
Udang Galah means Bamboo Prawn or Blue Pincer Prawn known locally.
Bar of soap mate 👌
great video
Earthworms would be the best bait
Subscribed 👍🏾
try a bit of paw paw. Works on the red claw fnq
Also I use small cans of catfood just crack the lid
Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Monster.
I heard those black rectangular pots are illegal to use in any water besides private dams?
Yes mate. Since making this video I’ve found out that two of the pots I was using are non-compliant.
Cat food be much cheaper than the corned beef, can't imagine what you're paying out there it's dear as in Katherine. Plus it's too good to waste
Yep, grew up on it too.
The local meatworks made their own brand.
Top shelf.
Yea mate... living remote is definitely more expensive. But the positives outweigh the negatives our here.
Are prawns and shrimp the same thing?
Because that looks like a Shrimp?
Awwwww you only got 2
Yea, there are plenty out there though.
Great job can anyone bring there boat down there
I’m not sure exactly what you mean mate. To King Ash Bay? Everyone brings a boat here. There is a public boat ramp.
What do you do for work
I make TH-cam videos mate.
@@MikeyCunninghamFishinghahaha. But seriously does doing what you do on TH-cam pay all the bills? And beer ain't cheap either! How many views and likes does it take to buy buy a slab of northerns? Btw cat food tins caught me 38 big fellas in 6 days. Golf country qld.... totally fresh water. Soap caught a few but works better cleaning ya pits other then catching a feed. Love the vids big fella! 👍
how's the crocs in that area
Yes mate. Plenty of Salt Water Crocodiles here.
every tried Pumpkin works on yabbie's
In Indonesia they catch them with a rod and reel hook little bit of bait
Wow, interesting.
Mantap bos ku 👍❤❤
Mate get a couple stockings and steal some chook pellets from somewhere chook pellets stocking pot potato does ok but better off there par boiled first
Yea a few people have said chook pellets mate. Sounds like they must go alright.
I think I saw mouse poo on your kitchen bench top yuck @ 14.21 on the left side.
Cooked your steak for a whole 3and a half minutes then rested for 10mins. 😮😮
Yea it rested to medium mate. Not how I usually have it… but still yum.
U search 'mancing udang galah'.....
