    Hi both, winter on a boat is okay if you get proper heating on board and keep your fire on all night with just a few nuggets of coal in it turned down low, this is my 8th year and it's fine. Keep warm both of you, hugs in bed work best or hot water bottles for Christmas 👍🥶

      Seeing your vlogs, and having fitted stoves to many boats id say by the look your fire is insufficient for the size of boat, also just burning wood the fire will be out or very close to out by the morning, a good multifuel fire regularly maintained and ash cleared daily will stay in 12 hours or more, our fire stays in from November until March, we use 2 bags of coal per week, so £36, yes costly but at least we get up or come home to a warm boat!! Hey Both, Just an FYI there's a water point before Little Venice, you pass it on your vid (23:07) just before the bridge on the left hand side. Theres a tap tucked away on the wall, I've missed it loads of times until someone pointed it out to me.

    I would imagine your freeze plug corrosion was caused by a lack of dissimilar metal protection. Steel freeze plug cast iron engine block. Nitrate and test strips to test for nitrate in your coolant. I would stop by a marina or auto parts store and ask about it. I own a small trucking company in the US it's important to keep up on it.

    Joe two things that I have found that helps with installing rubber and plastic hoses. The first is apply a bit of dish soap or plumbers grease around the internal circumference of the hose, and the second is dip the end in boiling water to soften the rubber or plastic.

    I notice that you have an overflow pipe on the side of the filler of your header tank which drains down the side of the engine to the bilge. It may be worth piping it to a catch tank or creating an expansion tank.

    Put two of the core plugs next to each other in that pipe instead of that wood plug with silicon sealer and a clip. Use a half nut on the thermostat housing and cut the stud down to give clearance for the pipe. You want no leaks on the coolant system. Have a lovely Christmas

    Hi Joe and Danni, I'm glad by the end of the episode the list of problems were being solved and you were cruising once again.
    Joe, I wasn't sure of the part you needed until I saw the new part. Those are called "Freeze Plugs" in the US. The standard ones are steel with a zinc finish and generally rust out if the engine cooling system is neglected. There are also brass freeze plugs, which last forever. It was wise to purchase the assortment pack.
    Having worked under similar conditions with cars, I can fully appreciate your working in that engine bay. With close quarters it is usually a pain but, the weather was not helping, fortunately it wasn't snowing or raining. The bilge "cocktail" of course added to your misery. I'm glad you hit upon the idea of pumping the mess unto a jerry can and bucket to sort later.
    +5 degrees Celsius in the house - ouch!
    These longer trips are revealing some of the deep hidden problems with the boat. Hopefully some of the more major ones are being crossed off the list. I hope the rest of your London trip goes according to plan and you two have a special, enjoyable time!

    Great video! And my wife sends respect for Danni's dungarees! Now that devil of a short hose from your thermostat housing: would an MGB top radiator hose (part RFC002A) do the business? They're kind of convoluted/pot bellied and you might be able to compress it along its length a bit then slip it in place so it could expand again. The final length is critical of course. There are also various 'hump hoses' that might suit. This compression technique is recommended for Mini etc bypass hoses that are convoluted and really too long to fit unless compressed a bit.

    get you some automotive silicone gasket maker. it seals almost everything. would have been perfect for your wood plug and you freeze plug. oil absorbent towels in the bilge, they will absorb the oil only and leave clean water behind. also a silicone reducer for the thermostat housing would work well, they are thinner than the rubber hose and last a-lot longer. throw a bilge pump in the engine compartment to keep the water lever at bay.

Do try and make the engine as watertight as humanly possible as the BMC hates getting extremely hot and “will blow the head gasket” and then you’ll need to have head skimmed and checked for hairline cracks… be warned! 👍🏻

    Good vlog again as usual. Love watching you work Joe, as you just get on with it. There’s no need to be cold on a NB in winter just stoke up the fire before turning in at night. We find excel is best, pile it onto a bed of good embers and just before it really catches shut the stove down and it should stay in all night keeping you both nice and toasty. Then first thing in the morning chuck on your free wood. I was told the only person to get cold on a boat is a lazy person because they don’t load the fire😂😂 if you get up in the night just check the fire and if need be throw some more coal on. Keep on boating and merry Christmas from NB Warrior.

    I'd have thought the core plugs on that B series would be imperial, not metric? Maybe that was why it was that hard to knock in! I've used wood to block hoses before, but it really helps if it's hard wood, old oak is good but it's a bugger to shape! The right sized copper pipe with a blanking end soldered to it can work. That job looked like a PITA to get done, all in all.
    4K for a recon engine sounds rather a lot to me, I have to say, assuming that's just for the engine? Last time I looked you could get an Essex V6 done for 2k, and that's twice the cylinder heads, 50% more cylinders and bearings etc.

      The angle of the pipe will always be covering a bolt hole if that makes sense, bloody awkward 😫

      Yeah it’s cold in the mornings, sometimes we leave the fire on overnight but because the windows are single pane it seems a waste of fuel leaving it lit overnight so just embrace the cold mornings 😂

    Well done on the engine repairs. Watching you hammer the new core plug in I was so worried you were going to hit a fuel pipe and end up having to change that too, but you managed it. I hope all leaks are now solved.
    Does you boat have any heating other than the one stove? You said the calorifier had been removed - does that mean the heating too? What heats your water now?

    • @DanniandJoe
      @DanniandJoe  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah I had the same worry! 😂 We have a diesel heater as well but until I’d fitted the new battery we couldn’t run it due to the large amount of amps on startup. Hot water wise we’ve got an instant water heater

    • @user-xw6wj2qh5n
      @user-xw6wj2qh5n 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DanniandJoeAh, of course. I forgot that diesel heaters need electrical power too. I've not had to even think about heating systems for over 30 years - here it's all about air conditioning and humidity control. Heating may well be easier. Here if there is a power cut those who can start heading off to check into a hotel somewhere that still has power or has generators. There is no way to cool a house without electricity. Without air con or fans it quickly gets impossible to sleep. At least for you it is possible to add more blankets etc. to stay warm in the short term. Fridges and freezers soon lose their cool too - the temperature gradient is too high. We have the same appliances here as in UK with no extra insulation built into them to cope with the climate. The only positive is that showering in cold water due to lack of power is okay because it is still going to be over 20 centigrade - even more in the afternoon and that's straight from the tap.
      So now you are on the eco mooring I hope you get the battery fully charged and conditioned.
