I was a kid when this tune came out. It taught me so much about string arrangement and how powerful just a couple of notes in the right place can be. 48 years into my own musical journey and I still look back on these tunes for inspiration.
The first time I listened to this song and really realized what it was saying, I literally couldn’t listen to it for years, that’s how strongly it affected me. I even recorded their “Anthology” CD onto cassette, except for this song. I’m in my 60’s now and those days of “Loves Lost” are far behind me now (Thank God), so I can enjoy listening to it now, without the pain, but it just all makes me appreciate what a powerful songwriter David Gates was. He could express both the pain and joy of Love, like no other. Even now, “Aubrey” is still hard for me to listen to, bringing back memories of that one girl that I wish I would have had a chance with.
It's pretty amazing to read your comment. I just turned 60 and lost my wife 2 years ago. I've played guitar - mostly acoustic since i bought the first one at 17 having lost a girlfriend. Gates' acoustic compositions were way beyond beginner. There's a reason why even Glen Campbell admired and respected him. Amazing composition behind those simple but beautiful melodies. Now I sit here having learned the 2 you just mentioned and also having a new level of appreciation for what a great song writer and guitar player he truly was.
The toughest word of the entire song is in the last line when he sings, "all the sweet things THEY can find." It's one thing to wish the woman he loves all the best, even when he can't be with her. But it takes a different kind of strength altogether to wish this for both of them as a couple.
It’s called, “The difference between a child and an adult.” As my best friend said as a 20 year old (now 62!), “Why would I EVER want to be with someone who doesn’t love, or want, me?” That’s not just and adult, that’s a psychologically balanced person!
@@voraciousreader3341 Your reply is on a pretty clinical level, I must say. But that "healthy-mindedness" talk doesn't address the actual trauma and turmoil of unrequited or lost love, whether experienced as a younger person or when older. Perhaps you've never really gone through it the way some have. Or perhaps you have indeed, but you defended against it mightily with "mature, well-balanced thoughts" about what you "should" want and what's "certainly all for the best." Whatever the case may be, the song "Diary" is beautifully heart-wrenching; it's not "good relationship advice."

I can't help but to cry! 🥺 I love that person, and I thought he loves me back. My feelings got deeper and deeper, until he brushed me away. But nothing has changed, it's just that I can't simply go back to him since he closes his door. All I can do now is to love him from a distance. Love can make us do things that's out of our measures and standards. And if it fails at one time, don't be discouraged, be glad instead, because your feelings are right, and it's big enough to consume all flaws and challenges that is on its path!
Yes, that's very true. We all have that someone special, who touched our heart like no other could, or ever has since. What do you do with that? You have to go on with your life the best way you can, so you lock those feelings/memories in a box, and hide it away somewhere, so that no one ever knows. But on that rare occasion in your older and hopefully wiser years, you take that box , unlock it, and examine the love that's still there. You smile through your tears at the precious memories that flood your heart and soul, and wonder why a love so strong wasn't meant to be. You dry your tears, put those thoughts and memories back in the box, lock it, hide it away again, and get on with the business of living. I am fortunate enough to have known that kind of love and depth of passion, so there are no regrets here, not even one, just a lingering twinge of sadness now and then, that for whatever reason, it simply wasn't meant to be.
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13) Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (Matthew 7:13-14) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

One of the saddest and most beautiful songs I could ever know ❤😊
Bread songs were always gorgeous 😍
I remember Father Andy, the most kind & humble priest i've ever known. He always sang this song.
He was broken, that's why he is a priest.
I have loved this beautiful song for years and years.

Beautiful Song. I love this song very much.
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13)
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (Matthew 7:13-14)
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

"The LOVE she/he waited for.. was someone else not me" .. who's to blame here.. the one who owns d diary or d person who read and assume it was him/her being described in d diary😭😭
No one to blame; just the way love goes sometimes.
Yes da best old song than todays generation
Sakit pala ng lyrics nito... Nung bata ko diko maintindihan. Kaya pala favorite to ng mga broken.😢😊
i really love listening to this song, so relaxing
Bread always brings the chills (or the tears).
This song has two dimensions; one is that the person enjoys a happy music, the other enjoys a piece of sadness.
I think being married to someone you don't love for the sake of being with someone won't make any difference. I would still feel alone and empty.
Yes! True
This reminds of yesterday💜💜💜
One of most beautiful songs by BREAD
Favorite Song ko to😢😢😢😢
If you need a great sad song to cry to, this is it…
THIS is why one shouldn't read other's diaries...
What! Just go on until the betrayal is revealed to you after you have been supporting their love child(ren) for years.
Just be upfront with people and your feelings then there would not be a need for diaries. I never kept one myself.
Haha
Oh how sweet the words and a time when I blindly believe in innocence
i listened to it as part of my school project to create a script about this song and the plot twist of this song took me by surprise:( this is so sad:(
