I have a 2001 silver Firebird with t-tops and the 3800. I love this car. Mine is in great shape too. The guy I bought it from took great care of it. For some reason the car came with the performance suspension package and leather seats, which was usually only seen in the Trans Am and Formula models. My engine bay isn't as clean as I live on a dirt road, but I do maintain the car and have no issues with it at all. I'll keep this car for the rest of my life and my 13 year old has already laid claim to it.
I had an early 90's Olds 88 with the 3800 v6 it was a great car. I was traveling five states for a living and over 350K on the engine with out any major issues. I have always thought it was one of the best engines GM ever made!
Hi Ray, I agree with you about the 3800 engine. I have had several cars with them and they just do not die. I currently have a 2002 VX commodore with the supercharged 3.8 and enjoy driving it as much as my LS1 VZ commodore
Ray you made my day praising the 3800! My wife and I both watch your channel! Due to gas prices myTahoe did not get good enough gas mileage! So picked up a Grand Prix GTP from the original owner. Except for the intake gaskets and water jacket elbows (I replaced both) I'm expecting over 500k miles! I was hoping the Monte Carlo had one. But the 5.3 is also a great engine. I prefer the 6 over the 8 in a small car because it's easier to work on! With the supercharger not much of HP difference! The GPX with the 5.3 is a Charger RT killer!
I've had just about every mechanical part of a car apart at some point in my life but never an air compressor. You learn something new everyday. Very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to show us that little bit extra Ray!
The GM 3.8 liter from Ponticrack is no joke! With proper maintenance, they'll outlast the vehicle itself every single time, and will continue running until the heat death of the universe...
Yep, I owned a 2004 Chevy LS Impala-18 years old with 3.8 liter engine. It was T-Boned on Parking lot and Totaled, everything on this car worked good and was still original except Battery--water pump, alternator, Air Cond. I can only imagine how tight it would have been with a bigger engine
My Bird is a 3.4L V6 and it is a PITA just to change the spark plugs😲 I can imagine what the LS1 is like.
Thanks for the video. This is my first look at an ac compressor tear down
I bought one last summer for my Dodge Dakota 2002 $700. I think I need the orfice changed and it has a short. I took it to a mechanic charge me three hundred bucks and didn't fix it. Still didn't go to charged up at Canadian Tire cost me $300. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.
Those a/c pumps with those piston make a good gift for your gear head wife😁 brought her home 2 bouquets of pistons she was happy, a new hair tie hanger 👍👍 just got another the other day
I have a 2001 silver Firebird with t-tops and the 3800.
Who needs cold air in Florida 😂
I had an early 90's Olds 88 with the 3800 v6 it was a great car. I was traveling five states for a living and over 350K on the engine with out any major issues. I have always thought it was one of the best engines GM ever made!
He popped that hood and said, "ooooooo!"
Hi Ray, I agree with you about the 3800 engine. I have had several cars with them and they just do not die. I currently have a 2002 VX commodore with the supercharged 3.8 and enjoy driving it as much as my LS1 VZ commodore
A car built in 2002 is "vintage"? The travel trailer in my backyard must belong in a museum!
Looks very like a water pressure pump. Great show, Ray. Power flush was definitely the way to go 👍
Ive disassembled a hydraulic pump before, looked alot like this, which is essentially what a ac compressor is
Fascinating to see the workings of that compressor. A bit like the barrel engine that powers some old torpedoes. Cheers Ray!
The hydrostatic transmissions on lawn mowers work much the same way.
The FORD 289 was also a great engine.
Great Ac Compressor Autopsy so much destruction @Rainman Ray's Repairs
You make all of this look so simple.
I've had just about every mechanical part of a car apart at some point in my life but never an air compressor. You learn something new everyday. Very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to show us that little bit extra Ray!
"Jeep people doing Jeep things." Is the Jeepest sentence I have ever heard
The GM 3.8 liter from Ponticrack is no joke! With proper maintenance, they'll outlast the vehicle itself every single time, and will continue running until the heat death of the universe...
Had one pushing 330k miles and it still would go if I put another head on it
I had a 1999 Chevy S10 with the 4.3 Liter V6 that was borderline bulletproof. Does that one have similar DNA to the one in this Firebird?
Yep, I owned a 2004 Chevy LS Impala-18 years old with 3.8 liter engine. It was T-Boned on Parking lot and Totaled, everything on this car worked good and was still original except Battery--water pump, alternator, Air Cond. Comp.- these components never failed--Best car that I have ever owned, With Advice from YT video's wife bought a 2022 Lexus after Retiring from Walmart-32 years...

116 in phoenix yesterday....our fahrenheits laugh at your fahrenheits
I'll see your 116 and raise you 2 Fahrenheits (Palm Springs).
This was very fun to watch. The beginning was relaxing.
Reminds me of the old A6 compressors in the '80s. We had a shop on the corner that only replaced that model A/C compressor.
verry good Ray
Tear down of the compressor was informative. Thanks!
Completely agree that the 3.8L V6 is one of GM's best engines. But you can never go wrong with a V8!
Inline engines are the Best Ever Created…..You will never have to change the intake gasket because coolant is getting into your oil……Facts Ray Facts 🤟🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
thanks for making these AC videos, it is increasing my confidence in repairing my AC systems on my cars.
