Dog will not jump in car

  • In this video, I show you how I teach a dog to jump in the car when they are afraid or reluctant to get in the vehicle. Training your dog to jump into the vehicle is important especially if you have a big dog that you can't lift up into the car or truck. In this video I show you how to use leash pressure along with food rewards to train your dog to jump in your car.
    If your dog is afraid to jump in the car, try using some high value food rewards first. If they are still refusing to get into the car, then use the leash pressure method that I demonstrate in the video.

    Thank you! My dog was so terrified of getting in the car that he would lay down and shake in fear before we even got within 30 feet of the car. We tried food and affection and he would just shut down. This has been an issue for over 4 years. And just to mention, he does not have anxiety once he is in the car, no motion sickness, and no physical ailments. So, we have simply been picking him up, but that's not great for him or our backs and we looked into training once again. After watching your video, I used leash pressure just as you said and within 10 minutes he was walking happily up to the car! Amazing! This is a huge benefit to all our lives. Thank you, again!

    My dog was afraid to jump into our cars and it turns out he has Invertebral Disk Disease and had a disk rupture, so just be aware of back pain as a potential reason your dog might be hesitant to jump up or down.

    My dog had a terrible time and we would try to get him into the car. He like going places but would always throw an objection to getting in the truck. Tried your method and could not believe in 30 seconds it worked.

      same, 3rd newf, no problem with the previous 2, but this guy.. spoilt from having a sprinter and now refuses to get into an SUV or any car - pressure, no pressure, balks like a wild stallion, let up and he's gone..if you open a sliding door, with plenty of head room and he can walk around ie the sprinter sure he'll saunter in - he has no health problems, still young, but a car-cage no thank you. We have to wrestle him. He's fine once in but it's a hog tying competition to get him in. The vehicle is an SUV, there's no cage its just he views it as too constraining.. I think it's the head room.

    I'm trying to teach a few dogs who came from a hoarding situation to jump in the car. Have had no success with anything I've tried. They of course, fear everything and have no idea what the outside world is like, never mind a car or car door. They won't accept any treats during this training either. Not sure what else to do. Any other ideas? Thank you.

      SASQUATCH SANCTUARY those type of dogs are difficult to work with. I would start off by just putting them in the car and feeding them something very appealing to try and build a strong positive association to being in the car

  • @NathanMcClintock

    This looks great. I had a genius idea for my stubborn boxer boy. I grabbed a dead rat and put it in the boot. He was more than happy to jump in! I did this a few times then swapped the rat for treats. He kept jumping in! Genius I tell you! So step 1 is to find a dead rat.

    Horrible video, horrible advice. Don’t pull or force your dog to do anything. I’m sure some dogs might respond to this but most will just fight against you then associate the experience as negative.

    • @Mydogtrainingspot
      @Mydogtrainingspot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This dog would not follow food into the car. If I followed your logic, I would have to tell the owner that the dog is going to just have to stay with me until he decides he will get into the car. And if the dog decides he doesn’t want to go in the car when you have a veterinarian appointment, you will just have to cancel the appointment. This dog will happily load into the car now by the way.

      @@Mydogtrainingspot My dog was expressly unhappy as soon as he felt a pull towards the car. He now won’t come anywhere near it. Apologies for hostility but had lost patience and feel like I’ve tried everything to get him in the car now.

      @@garrylister this is not uncommon for some dogs especially if they get car sick. Another thing I will often try is to open both doors of the car, get a helper if possible and work on getting the dog to run through the car like a tunnel and use food rewards. Try making a game out of it. I have helped a lot of dogs work on this and one TH-cam video cannot possibly give a solution that will absolutely work for every dog. However the bottom line is there are certain behaviors we may have to force upon the dog initially to convince them they can do it. I’m not saying it is easy, as it can take a lot of work.

    he is fighting you because he has gotten hurt jumping in there like that so he doesnt want to do it. also if they refuse like that its because it HURTS them to do it hips or legs or something. its WRONG to force him and cruel please stop doing that to your dog
