be that as it may they were all three Roman provinces and that is no coincident but what is termed manifest destiny history they were driven by that heritage
all three nations Britain Spain and France all had empires I wonder why could it be because they were all part of the Roman Empire at one time or other food for thought as far I am concerned they were destined to be so by the the the way I am glad you agreed with me nothing like vindication
Hey Neil, welcome back. That's a good point about the Roman Empire; one could argue that the cultural infrastructure of Rome never left. The Plantagenets spoke Latin and empires were part of medieval culture probably in large part thanks to the memory of Rome. I would add that the main reason these three nations, and also Portugal, had empire had more to do with the Ottomans and other Muslim empires and their oppressive policies towards Europeans i.e. barbary slavery practices and trade restrictions leaving European nations no choice other than to travel west in search of alternate trade routes east. Yes it was well said. Britain saw itself as the new Rome. This was most notable during the Napoleonic War and even played a role subsequent in both the first and second world wars where Britain saw itself as the defender of Europe. Thanks for your comment Neil.
