To finish Arin’s unfinished explanation of what it means to be “fridged”:
“Fridging” refers to killing off, maiming, or otherwise harming a fictional female character solely for the purpose of motivating a male character. It is a reference to a Green Lantern comic in which GL’s girlfriend is murdered and crammed into a refrigerator for him to find.
The death of one character to motivate another is common in fiction, but the term “fridging” is more a criticism of characters (generally female) who exist for the *sole purpose* of inflicting violence upon them to motivate the protagonist.
EDIT: a fresh comment on this made me want to clarify:
One of the key components of “fridging” is that the character (male or female, but usually female) exists for the sole purpose of being “fridged”. Nothing they say or do has any impact on the main character, other than their death. They exist in the story just long enough to justify the main character caring about them, but not usually long enough for the reader to care.
They are different from origin story deaths (like the parents of many heroes) because those characters are typically fleshed out over time and they impacted the character in other ways.
A key characteristic of “fridging” is that it is done to shallow characters that otherwise contribute nothing to the story. It’s a cheap way to add shock value or motivation to a story, without sacrificing any characters that people actually care about.

It's also good to understand that fridging isn't inherently a bad thing. It's a tool for storytelling. Not every character needs to be fleshed out. They can be a plot point and that's perfectly fine. For example, Martha Wayne, Batman's mother was technically fridged. You'll see no one complain about that.

@@SirDiamondNips That's not true. Some characters exist to...well, for no reason. It's bad writing. I'm trying to think of an example but got nothing off the top of my head. Basically imagine Character A says hi to Character B. Character B says hi back. That's it. Character B never shows up again in the plot. They didn't move anything forward. They didn't even develop the character of Character A. They weren't important in any shape or form. It's not even interesting, it's a greeting, which most people cut out of their dialogue entirely.
OK, we need to start a petition for the boys to play Double Dragon II: The Revenge. The NES version of that has two player co-op and is superior to DD in just about every way. And it's available on Switch Online. And should something happen to that, it's available for the switch in the Arcade Classics series as well.
I'm actually really dumbfounded they ported Double Dragon 1 but didn't have co-op, which was literally the selling point of Double Dragon.

@@THENAMEISQUICKMAN Well, they did change the story a little bit. They made Jimmy the final boss and thus the "leader" of the bad guys who kidnapped the girlfriend. It makees no sense at all in the context of the game or the series as a whole, but it's there.
YES! I'm pretty sure that's what Dan is thinking because I grew up playing DD2 and it sounds like he's describing it!!! (I only watched 1 minute 25 seconds before I had to see if the comments mentioned DD2)

Arin doesn't hog the games nearly as much as people seem to assume. Danny is generally very happy being back-seat commentator, but Arin loves watching him play too.
Its also really fun to see Arin's observational comedy come out when he doesn't have to worry about the game.

@@xxyoboigxx the switch NES Emulator has Double Dragon 1 and 2. They played 1, but they could've played 2 instead and done co-op.

You probably never played this game, it’s not something you can do from the beginning or at anytime, you see the hearts, those are like experience points, the more guys you beat up the more you get the more moves you can do, I forgot the game was set up like that too, but that’s why dan couldn’t jump kick when he was first trying, or even jump on the first stage, he didn’t have enough hearts to do the moves.

You know funny enough I think a lot of the youtubers who did voices in that game didn't make videos on it. In-fact most of them barely mentioned it at all. Kinda weird tbh how little coverage that game got. Wonder if something happened behind the scenes

That's kind of amazing that this game allowed you to defeat women. I remember thinking how awesome games like Skyrim were for having enemy female AI. Added so much realism to the world.
TheUnholyOne In one of the Final Fighter games (with Hagard, Guy and Cody I think) there was a enemy named Poison and she was a chick. People were upset that you could hurt a woman so they changed it so Poison used to be a man. Nowadays that don’t work so well to prevent controversy.

This is so cool to see the grumps play. I remember my parents telling me about how they would spend time together at a double dragon arcade cabinet back in their 20s. Quarters well spent I imagine.

I also love when the Grumps play these 80s games because it reminds me that Danny is an absolute gaming chad.
Let's all remember that dan and arin are on tour and these are playthroughs from b4 they left.

As soon as I saw the notification for this, I freaked out. The *Double Dragon* games were staples of my childhood, and even still I enjoy hopping in and beating up some baddies. I've lost interest in some of what the Grumps have been playing lately, but this is something I can't miss. Thank you for playing this.
A couple other things I wanted to mention:
*Double Dragon II* and *Double Dragon III* both have simultaneous co-op, despite the first game being only one player at a time.
*Double Dragon II* has a much better combat system, with different command inputs.
The *Battletoads* characters that Arin was referring to are named Rash, Zitz, and Pimple.
The final boss is indeed Jimmy Lee. The arcade version allowed for co-op, but the developers were unable to get the mechanics to work on the NES, so they altered the story to have Jimmy as the leader of the Shadow Clan.
They should play Abobo's Big Adventure sometime
It blew my mind watching James and Mike (Cinemassacre) play it. They would seriously love it for the artwork and insanity.
