Wow! I'm finally glad to see how this lei is made because they make the same version with the modern kahoa/kasoa (necklaces) in Uvea and Futuna which I'm planning to make later this year. Mālō from Auckland, NZ 🤙🏾
Mahalo iā 'oe e Megan for your detailed tutorial. Appreciate you sharing with us. I made my first Song of India Star lei and it turned out maika'i! Ke Akua pū.
Mohalos for sharing your beautiful work.. I’ve made a few of your styles with a little twist to them with our South East Asian heritage in them. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 your tutorials and techniques are easy to follow and make great pieces.
So glad I found your channel and very user friendly videos. I moved from mainland to Kauai couple years ago and it’s time I learn how to make some leis with all the Ti and star of India leaves in our yard! Heading back to mainland for grandsons graduation in a couple weeks. Hoping to make him a couple of graduation leis to bring over with us. I think following your instructions I can actually do this. Very excited. Good thing I have lots of leaves as I may need to make some practice leis🤣🤣
That's beautiful. Can I make a suggestion Elton make it faster. Maybe find something to hold the needle upright like a clip or clamp, then you don't need to keep putting it down.
Yes! It would be best to use a ribbon that is stiffer like poly ribbon or acetate ribbon. There are also some ribbon that look like leaves called aspidistra or ti leaf ribbon. You can find it at a floral supplier or on Amazon
Hello! I was wondering if you have tutorials on how to make a pua kenikeni lei and a clown flower lei. My tutu has a bunch in her backyard and I want to create a couple of leis 🤗 Love da work!!
So glad I found this tutorial! You mentioned you get them from the LA Flower Mart. Is there a particular seller you use and approx how much is one stem?
For the first batches theyll keep hold when u slide them off the needle to the floss? Thats what im scared abour if they lose their shape & collapse once I slide them down from the needle 😖
Thanks for the tutorial! I'm very interested in making the Song of India style. I know you said that you get around 10 stems to make 1 lei. Approximately how much leaves is that. Not sure if our friends is going to like the idea of me breaking the stems from their plant. 😂
Great job on this tutorial!!! My question for you is....what kind of needle is that? I can see it isnt the regular sewing needle and have seen it in other videos but didnt feel comfortable asking! Thank you for sharing such great content❤
Thank you! I use this needle in most of my leis, it is a long doll needle from Hobby Lobby and is just under 5 inches. www.hobbylobby.com/Fabric-Sewing/Sewing-Quilting-Notions/Pins-Needles/Long-Doll-Needles/p/52217
I am using a long doll needle from Hobby Lobby. It is about 5 inches and I use to make most of my leis. You can also order lei needles on Amazon that are 12 inches long

Can I use ribbon cut into 4” pieces to make the lei? Mahalo!
Yes! It would be best to use a ribbon that is stiffer like poly ribbon or acetate ribbon. There are also some ribbon that look like leaves called aspidistra or ti leaf ribbon. You can find it at a floral supplier or on Amazon

Malo Megan you have taught me a lot on how to do kahoas! May. God continue to bless you with your talent! Ofa atu
SO UʻI!! MAHALO FOR SHARING❤❤❤❤❤
This is awesome! Thank you! How do you store it? Wrapped in wet paper or just In a bag or Tupperware?
I just kept in the produce drawer in the fridge! The leaves are much more hardy than flower leis 🌺♥️
I appreciate your tutorials so much!! Should I soften ti leaf for this lei?
Its not necessary to soften the ti leaf! The ones I made were not softened ♥️🌺
Thank you for the tutorial. Do you have an idea how many leaves you need?
I used about 375 individual leaves for an adult lei
@@makeitmegan thank you for letting me know! Wish me luck 🤞
Do you freeze your leaves beforehand?
I am going to try this with ribbon. About how many leaves did you use? Thank you for this beautiful tutorial.
I used about 375 leaves for this lei!
How long do you thing this lei would stay beautiful and fresh in the refrigerator? I need to prep for Seattle first week of March.
What kind of a needle do you use and the dental floss, is it waxed or un-waxed floss?
I used waxed but you could use either. The needle is a 5 inch doll needle

I'm very interested in making the Song of India style. I know you said that you get around 10 stems to make 1 lei. Approximately how much leaves is that. Not sure if our friends is going to like the idea of me breaking the stems from their plant. 😂
I would estimate about 375 individual leaves!
Do you soften the song of India and the Ti leaf? How far ahead of time can you make the lei?
I didnt soften any of the leaves to make this, it would last several days in the fridge
This is so gorgeous! Would this method work for a lei po'o?
These leaves are often used in a lei po’o but I wouldn’t recommend this method 🌺
How far ahead can you make these?
I prefer not to make any of my leis more than 24 hours before I need them but this style will be find in the fridge 2 days in advance
I love making this lei for my family today my sister is graduating from high school we’re in Hawaii so I got tought how to make this at 7
Absolutely gorgeous ❤
Can you use artificial ti leaf if you don't have access to fresh?
Yes! You can use artificial ti leaf or ti leaf ribbon

@@makeitmegan would an upholstery needle work as well or possibly too big?
@@makeitmegan Thank you. I needed an excuse to go to Hobby Lobby and Michael's *giggles*😊
Can the Lei be frozen for future use?
If making with ribbon, how wide would you suggest the ribbon to be?
I would suggest using 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch wide ribbon cut in 3.5-4 inch pieces
Hi
Do you know an estimate of how many song of India leaves you used to make 1 lei? (50-100)? Looks like a lot of leaves per lei. 😅
I would estimate about 375 individual leaves 😅😅😅
Hi a question why do you use tooth floss instead of the of a normal thread??
You can use almost any string, I like using floss because it is strong and I always have it on hand!
Aloha Megan. I'm a beginner. What size needle are you using?
It's for a song of india lei
I am using a long doll needle from Hobby Lobby. It is about 5 inches and I use to make most of my leis. You can also order lei needles on Amazon that are 12 inches long
@makeitmegaHow many leaves make up one star? I tried to count but I couldn't keep up.
You can do this with ribbon too?
Yes! We are working on a ribbon version of this tutorial 🌺♥️
❤️❤️❤️❤️
