you're my hero man! you're doing great things for society by spreading out knowledges! it is people like you that makes the world a better place. thank you very, very much :)
+CarlosBrabo Wow! Thanks for the encouragement and the very kind words. It is people like YOU that encourage others to spread knowledge in the first place! Take care!
Man you're amazing!! I don't know how you don't have a million subs but keep at it! I wish I could beatbox on sax as easily as I can on flute.. but I suppose the first time I heard Greg Patillo I felt just as overwhelmed lol.. Man I'm so glad you're paving the way for beatbox sax players on youtube! Looking forward to seeing more of your videos!!
I really don't like traditional beat boxing, but I'm SAX it's soooooo awesome! I wanna try it out...... but are you supposed to have experience with the traditional beatbox?
Hello Derek, first at all you have a great sound and you perform it very well, bravo ! My english is not very well but I hope you will inderstand me. So, my question is basicly whitch kind of hips you use or you encourage to use to start with flap tounguing? Thanks. And my bests regards, keep going on. You are a very good musician :)
Thanks, Brian. And yeah, Zorn along with other "freer" saxophonists do use a lot of extended techniques as well. I guess my goal is to use them in a way that creates a groove. But it's all good!
Really Diggin it Derek! Please keep the vids coming! There are so many things the saxophone is capable of that not many are talking about. I know Joshua Redman and James Carter are the main two that come to mind. Are you in Chicago? Playing anywhere soon? I'm pretty new to town and gigless. Lol. I've been using some of the techniques but I'm having a tough time getting the faster pop notes. Do you teach?
Jason, I enjoyed our lesson last week. I hope you're on your way to getting the slap tonguing and other things down. And definitely keep me updated. See ya!
No I hadn't, though I just looked it up. I know guys like Colin Stetson and PedroSaxo use various mics to pick up sounds at their mouth or throat. I've always worked on everything traveling through the horn, but that mic looks really interesting! Thanks!
Hi, I love how that sax sounds and I want to ask you a question from Argentina and if you can answer me I'll thank you very much. Because when all the Bb bass in beatbox does not hear the same normal note ... I mean .... I play Bb bass and I hear the normal C ... is that correct? or I have a detune. thank you very much derek !!!
multiphonics are made from playing different combinations of your fingers that aren't quite normal. from there, you have to mess with air speed and tongue position to get multiple notes, otherwise you're stuck with only one note. basic fingerings for multiphonics are (low C, but pick up first finger on your right hand; low Bb, but lift up your pinky on C; low B, but pick up your second finger on your right hand). Try those to start.
Here's a question I've had on my mind for a while after sort of mentally analyzing the way I play. What are your suggestions on how much mouthpiece you should take in when you play? I notice that I tend to be on the shallower side and don't take a lot of mouthpiece in compared to a lot of other players. Does the amount of mouthpiece you take in have a significant effect on a lot of the effects you use?
+jamey robinson While the amount of mouthpiece in the mouth of course affects the volume and intensity of the tone, I don't think it really has much effect on the various extended techniques I use. And in fact, I think I might be like you, using a little less mouthpiece in my mouth than what's normal. But also, I use a pretty wide tip opening (8* on a JodyJazz DV mouthpiece), so less mouthpiece in my mouth gives me a bit more control. And once again, I don't think the tip opening matters much either, except for the tone control. But not in the ease or difficulty of doing this techniques. But who knows, I could be wrong!!
Heeey....this is just how I sounded the day I first bought my sax and tried to produce a MUSICAL NOTE. If I'd known my pathetic raspy horrible beginnings could actually lead to something this cool, I wouldn't have sweated it out trying to really play this instrument the so-called "correct" way. This is hilarious...!
Moby Jamesen frizzzzzzal In my "Tutorial Tuesdays" series, I'll be getting to the various flutter tonguing stuff I do. Probably in a few weeks. Subscribe if you're interested in following. Thanks for the interest!
Definitely! And some of the effects may sound even better (like the slap tonguing) due to the bass-ier sounds. Be sure to check out my other tutorials where I go way more specific.
Mark VI tenor (159xxx), SR Tech Mouthpiece (pro), Legere 3.25 reeds. However, you can definitely do these things with any equipment. Thanks for asking!
You definitely can. Slap tonguing the lower notes on an alto won't sound as bass-y, of course, but everything else should sound very similar. It just takes a lot of practice!
These are many of the things our middle school band directors taught us not to do.
Sounds GREAT!
ha lol
Oof I remember those days
you're my hero man!

Your plating is astonishing! Thank you very much for these tutorials. I guess i'll use them a lot xD Subscribed!
That's much simpler then I thought. Obviously its hard to do, but in theory it doesn't take too much. You're the best lol.

Dude, wow, You are great! Thank you for doing this!
You're welcome, Kyle. Glad to see people are interested. And by the way, I like your photo. Where'd you get all those saxes?
Beatbox Sax Haha Thanks! I did my undergrad at Central Michigan University (now at MSU) and had access to a lot of saxophones.
please how can I learn how to play jazz
Very cool!!
Jeah I´m gonna follow you on "Tutorial Tuesdays". Great idea :-)
how the hell you do that , i want to learn on my clarinet ?
You are a GOD;
I wish i'll play like you...
but is so difficult
Awesome!! Thank you sir.
Great fun. Reminds me of John Zorn.
Thanks, Brian. And yeah, Zorn along with other "freer" saxophonists do use a lot of extended techniques as well. I guess my goal is to use them in a way that creates a groove. But it's all good!
Your brilliant man
Do these techniques also work for the bass clarinet?
Really Diggin it Derek! Please keep the vids coming! There are so many things the saxophone is capable of that not many are talking about. Excellent!
mano .Você toca muito , e me ajudou bastante essas tecnicas xD
Ever hear of the FaceBass mic for Didgeridoo?
No I hadn't, though I just looked it up. I know guys like Colin Stetson and PedroSaxo use various mics to pick up sounds at their mouth or throat. I've always worked on everything traveling through the horn, but that mic looks really interesting! Thanks!
Thanks for this beautiful Video, it's actually difficult for me to do the hi hat, do u have advise for me?
Amazing!!!

Hi Derek...
regards fron Honduras C.A...
I have a question for you....
how do you create a multifonic sound ?
hope you help me with this...
multiphonics are made from playing different combinations of your fingers that aren't quite normal. from there, you have to mess with air speed and tongue position to get multiple notes, otherwise you're stuck with only one note. basic fingerings for multiphonics are (low C, but pick up first finger on your right hand; low Bb, but lift up your pinky on C; low B, but pick up your second finger on your right hand). Derek gostei muito do seu som com Diogo Pinheiro da Boquilhas Ever-ton. i like
awesome!
Thanks Derek for this wonderful tutorial. I am a music student in the university of Nigeria. I learnt new things from this video. Thanks

Wow. Congratulations. You Rock. Very interesting. I'm subscribe to your channel. Greetings from BRZ🇧🇷 Santos City. See you!!
Can you do this on the alto saxophone as well?
Would the mouthpiece I use have any effect on the sound I produce while "saxboxing?" Oh cool, I made a new word.
The mouthpiece shouldn't really matter too much. You should be able to do any of these techniques on pretty much all classical and jazz mouthpieces.
Wow that's really great! By the way, does it only work on tenor sax? I tried it on my alto but it doesn't sounds right
W Noah tenor bari or bass works alto and soprano will work just won’t sound good
I want be able to do that
Heeey....this is just how I sounded the day I first bought my sax and tried to produce a MUSICAL NOTE. If I'd known my pathetic raspy horrible beginnings could actually lead to something this cool, I wouldn't have sweated it out trying to really play this instrument the so-called "correct" way. In making the bass beat does your tongue stay on the reed to stop it vibrating and giving a tone rather than a percussive sound?
Hey, where did you get/buy that metal ring you use with your right thumb?
What kind of tenor is that? Selmer, cannonball...?
Iam fan this guy
mouthpiece that you use
Does this work just as well with alto sax, or is it a bit different
What is the total basic thsing to start with
Hey! so have n Question... can I also do all this also with my Alto Sax?
+Natalie Mitteregger Yes you can! Here's a link to a video I did on this: th-cam.com/video/rgquJvrnRx4/w-d-xo.html Good luck!
thanks so much
+Natalie Mitteregger You're welcome!
muito massa
does this work for alto sax
heh... I need to try with my clarinet. 😂
When you did the fluter tonguing the first thing I thought "This motherfucka been practicing"

I know this might be a dumb question because saxophones are quite similar, but will this work on a bari?
Definitely! And some of the effects may sound even better (like the slap tonguing) due to the bass-ier sounds. Be sure to check out my other tutorials where I go way more specific.
Beatbox Sax thank you!!!!
❤🎉
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😘😘😘😘😘
I can’t get any of this down
do u have to have a synthetic reed to make these sounds?
It will just be a more economic choice.
whats your setup?
Mark VI tenor (159xxx), SR Tech Mouthpiece (pro), Legere 3.25 reeds. However, you can definitely do these things with any equipment. Thanks for asking!
Dublagem em Português!?? Please!
can you do this on alto?
You definitely can. Slap tonguing the lower notes on an alto won't sound as bass-y, of course, but everything else should sound very similar. It just takes a lot of practice!
check out nat maclntosh beatobxin' tuba player!
Hey! so have n Question... can I also do all this also with my Alto Sax?
should work, but bass for example wouldnt work as good as its not as deep
Easier to practice on a bigger reed but if u can do it on a tenor u can do it on an alto
