    Greetings from Arctic Circle. The secret is to have nothing soft and thick (=neoprene) under your palms, pre curved fingers and mittens are always the warmest. In Finland we do winging in freezing temperatures and my favorite gloves are Prolimit Direct Grip mittens for jibes and tacks. You mentioned hunter's syndrome. It is good to know that and simply come back to shore, make your blood circulate again and then you can wing an hour easily and no cold hands. Cold water is just like any cold weather: dress up properly. And when you keep your torso and arms warm then your hands are warm too. Happy winging!
    PS: Using a harness saves your energy too...
    PPS: All this applies also to winging on snow. ;)

      Helloooo Arctic Circle wing crew!! So great to hear from you. Those Prolimits look great! I haven’t seen any Prolimit stuff around here in forever, maybe my wing dealer can get some in. And cool to hear you call it Hunters Syndrone, I’ve never heard that. I’m totally with you… it’s all about dressing properly - if you are cold, you can probably fix it. But I’m looking for that Goldilocks zone where I can still get high performance without the suffering. So far… lots of trial and error suffering 😂👍
      Do you guys usually wing on flat or terrain? Do you need to be juiced for powder?

    • @veskupaananen
      @veskupaananen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OCEANBOUND1 When the sea frozes we do winging on ice. Bare and clean ice is a tricky for snowboards and skis, but you can use skates and sledges (a long board with blades). Winging is easy and the best on hard packed snow or shallow fresh snow, but in powder we prefer kites. You need tons of wind/power in powder and a harness helps a bit, but not that fun. Hard packed snow and a good terrain is an epic combination! Going both up and down and launching. Snow is only frozen water. :)
      About mittens, I'm sure that some other brands also have mittens with thinner and no neoprene palms. As you said, try and error.

    Hey
    Use the Kokotat here in Denmark to.
    Its the best glove so far 2 out of 3 Guys use them in wintertime.
    Downside is pricing and lifespan. Im on My second pair this winter.
    But they really Arent made for this kind of use.

      Oh hello Denmark wingers!! Awesome to hear you dig them too! Not awesome about the durability. Doesn’t surprise me a ton. I’m used to going through multiple pairs of glacier gloves, I totally know the feeling. But maybe if I switch my gloves around enough they won’t get a ton of wear 😂👍

      @@OCEANBOUND1 after I wrote here, I actually wrote to Kokatat and told that their mitten was a choise of many, but could need som upgrades in orden to be the number one wing glove.
      A more tearresistant palmarea.
      "Welded" seams on the outside, to prevent them from tearing apart and letting water in.
      Fingers crossed they will use the info.

    Nice review! We are always out in mid 30 temps, Spokane WA, had the Patagonia lobster claw, toasty warm but difficult to get on, tight wrists, and terrible forearm pump. Just switched to the Ion 3/2 pre-curved and kinda love them, not quite as warm but I can still stay out a whole session with them. Super easy on/off and the inside material is very soft and minimal forearm pump. Stoked to hear your review of the 8M Strike, love mine, impressed by the wind range, definitely increases my days on the water.

    • @OCEANBOUND1
      @OCEANBOUND1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks bud! I bet you get a good amount of cold in your parts as well! I think I could go with thicker lobster claws if they made them
      With super loose wrists. But that’s not easy to find, and the Kokatats are the loosest I’ve found. Someone in a comment below inspired me to look into dove gloves… I’m seeing a lot with loose wrists that I’m curious about now too. It never ends!
      The 8m is great!! I wish I could take it out on one more light wind sesh before I do a review. I’ve been out on it twice and day one was pretty insane gusting over 30mph and it held up well but it felt weird only reviewing that side of an 8m. So maybe one more sesh and I can finish that review. Fingers crossed!
      I wish you warm weather and windiness!

    I was out on Lake Tahoe yesterday with 3mm kokatat inferno paddling mitts and was absolutely cozy.
    Warmer than 3mm gloves, minimal fatigue. Glad you brought them up.
    Risk to me: a lot of their effectiveness is water-tightness. A puncture would SUCK mid session.

      @OCEANBOUND1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tahoe! That’s awesome. How’s the wind in the summer? I’ve been meaning to visit my friend out there for a while and wondering if i should bring my wing stuff.
      It does suck when the water enters. I usually have holes in the gloves I use, so I’ve been dealing with that for years. Never fun. But those kokatats are well built so that prolly won’t happen, at least for a while. And the wrists are looser than other mitts, but totally a good seal IMO. Glad to hear yr rocking Tahoe mid-winter! Respect bud!! ✊

    I finally got to wing after 4 months, it was February and cold, not 34F. I used the gloves i bought in local surf shop but had to take them off fairly quickly. They were slippery and i had to grab the handles with my full grip. My hands hurt so much that I could not contineu. It was impossible to just use thefinger tips on the handles; it would also slip on the palm of my hand, whereas with no gloves the handles just hooks on the palms. So on my last 2 sessions i did not use gloves at all. Thanks for the review!

      Welcome back to the water Tomas!! I would have been out too if I were in yr shoes. I don’t think I realized it got that cold over there. Try glacier gloves, either the ice bay or perfect curve. If you can find them for under $30 on eBay or something, score. But better than nothing, kinda cheap, tons of grip. I really hope it starts getting warmer soon. Glad to hear yr back. Keep in touch!

    Dang, wish I saw this a few days ago. Just purchased some Patagonia gloves to complete my cold water gear. The move from Maui to Maine is complete, we're setup in Boothbay Harbor, just waiting on my wing foil board to get here from Maui. So I went thick to establish a baseline and work down from there. Keep up the good content Jeremy, look forward to winging down south someday with you.

      Yeeeooo welcome to the NE bud! You’ll be fine with the thick gloves. It will keep you the warmest, which is a good thing. And you never know, you may have wrists of steel and think we’re all crazy with the forearm complaining. You can always get a thinner pair. Stoked to catch a sesh with you at some point!

    Glad you dig the Kotatats! I think I got them for around $60 two years ago 😬. I feel ya on the tack issue for sure. No ‘finger twirls’ happening, which does mess with my tacks as well. Those paired with a set of palmless mitts get me through the winter.
    Regarding the vasodilation finger pain, the trick is to thaw out before the point where it’s painful, so set a 10 minute timer and head to shore for a few minute to get blood flow back in the hands. You get the warm rush without the screaming barfies 🤗

    • @OCEANBOUND1
      @OCEANBOUND1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes!! Love having the kokatats in my glove collection. And they will certainly get used. It can officially get me under 40 and I feel way less miserable. But if I never have to use them for the rest of the season, that’s totally rad too!
      Love the timer idea. I’ve def tried and succeeded in getting it to happen as quick as possible, but the timer is a great idea to put a little structure to it. Thanks again for the tip Graham!

    Thanks for this review, I’ve been waiting for someone to do this for a while! Definitely agree that 40 is the minimum to be really stoked to go out but there are going to be days in the mid 30s where you just have to do it. Recently bought fhs ride engine nug and it has extended my winter sessions in a big way by letting my rest my arms, especially going up wind. Really like how minimalist it is and how I can push it out of the way when I don’t want to use it.

    • @OCEANBOUND1
      @OCEANBOUND1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man the nug sounds super cool. I wish I could go there, I just made a pact with myself that I’d never buy another Ride Engine product again, so I’m sticking to that. The idea of using a a line is intriguing to me, but I haven’t don’t it in 2 years and if I make it through this winter without doing it, I’ll be stoked. But jelly of the rests you get on the water. Thanks for the comment bud, I wish you an awesome day!

    Gotta try some of those gloves. Like you I’ve tried around 4 different mittens and gloves so far, no bueno. And the frozen purple fingers are no fun either. Hopefully I can get your favorite ones and be done, but we’re all different and my cold temp threshold has been 48 degrees or no go. Keep up the vids please, I know it’s difficult sometimes.

    • @OCEANBOUND1
      @OCEANBOUND1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha thanks bud! You must be somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere. Mitts are the warmest way to go, you sacrifice agility. I go as thin as possible but under 40degrees it’s not that fun. The NPs 1.5mm are def my fav of early winter. Good luck bud!

  • @larrycollar1322
    @larrycollar1322 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’ve experienced the bee stung fingers recently also. I wear 1.5mm Kevlar dive gloves simply because that is what I have. They work great most of the time but not when the wind is screaming and the temps drop below 45 degrees. Didn’t know about the vasodilation adaptation but that does seem to explain why my hands stop stinging after a short while. I thought it was related to how big my smile was while winging.

    • @OCEANBOUND1
      @OCEANBOUND1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sup Larry! Your Kevlar dive gloves intrigued me, and that’s opened up a whole new rabbit hole of gloves I never really thought about. Some look better than others. And all of the 1.5mm that I found do look like they would be kinda cold, but there were a bunch of 3mm that caught my eye. Next year!
      Stoked you got the wing bug too!

    Great review, thanks. I have the 1.5mm and the 3mm O'Neill Psychotechs - really love the 1.5mm's but they are so easy to tear/rip. 3mm is statrting to get too thick for comfortable winging, at least with rigid or thick handles. I have the 7m Strike CWC for a few months now, absolutely love it. SO good in light winds, and the handles are so easy to use with a light touch. For a big wing it turns very intuitively and rarely do I get any water strikes. By this stage I hope neoprene manufacturers are beginning to develop Wing Foil specific gear, as it is a rapidly expanding market. Can we please have wetsuits with elbow pads and gloves with good wind blocking on the back of the hands and thinner, more dextrous palm areas??? It should also be possible by now to include sealed battery heating elements you'd think - just enough to take the edge off the frostbite🤪
    Thanks again for the review, keep it up.👌

    • @OCEANBOUND1
      @OCEANBOUND1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks bud, appreciated! I usually rock the 1.5mm NP gloves. I have a few pairs now. They hold up well and are not super grippy, kinda just enough. They should make 1mm palms and 3mm backs. And I totally agree with wetsuits. I have a list of recommendations that the local wetsuit company Mahulu said they would consider for next years production, it’d be sick if we could get them to do wing-specific stuff! It’s possible, fingers crossed. Thanks for watching and I wish you an awesome day!

    Great video mate! I've used open mitts with Dish wash gloved inside. I think it's very subjective how you like it though :). I think the climate in western Norway is very similar to Boston in winter time :). But the 8m2 though?? Give us a review pliis :D

    I need at least 5mm in winter and they have to be mitts. I've been happy with my 5mm Excel Dryloc lobsters. They are the best winter mitts I have found for 30 - 50 degrees. The thickness doesn't bother me. My only complaint is that they could make them grippier.
    Looking forward to your review on that new 8m CWC. My 7m should be here soon.

      Yeeeeoo thanks bud! I hear you, I strongly dislike being cold. Why be cold when I prolly have the gear. But winging def requires a different thought pattern, and even though I hate thick gloves, there are conditions where they could work and I’m softening to them. My 8m review is taking a while, I decided to do this one first but the 8m should be out soon. Although I wish I could get another light wind sesh or two to give it a serious review. Thanks for the comment bud, and I wish you an awesome day!!

    Thanks for your review. I don’t know how you can tolerate such thin gloves. I’m still hunting for the ultimate cold water solution. Screaming barfies, love it! At first glance I though your wrote “barflies” which was equally entertaining. Yeah I’m somewhat stubborn when it comes to gloves, and I wish I wasn’t. I think a thicker pair of lobster claws may be in my future. Graham was the one who recommended the Kokatats, and we’ve discussed the bee stings before, so I trust him! I’ll check that out for sure. Thanks for the review! I can't stand thick gloves either. Been using open palmed mitts only. They work a lot better than I expected. I'm good with them down to about 45F. Below that, hands get cold fast. The open mitts give no forearm fatigue at all, and you can quickly flip them back over your wrist when rigging up or if you're feeling warm. I'm going to give those NP 1.5mm gloves a try for the colder days next year though.

    • @OCEANBOUND1
      @OCEANBOUND1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The open mitts are intriguing to me. I think they’d work in most situations except the coldest, but I haven’t tried them yet. Like I kinda mentioned, I don’t like tight-wrist gloves, so I dont think I’ve seen a pair that looks loose enough to me, but I’m looking. Love how you can flip them too.
      The NP are great BUT they are not the warmest. So I’m def not recommending them for super cold, but I like them enough that I take them in those cold temps and just deal. I think they have 3m too, I’d prolly try them next year. Let me know if you like them!

      I have a pair of 2mm gloves which I use with open palm mitts if the temperature gets below 5C. Wearing both gives you warmth on top but doesn't add thickness under the palm while keeping the flexibility to pull your fingers out if you need to do something fiddly. The other thing I do is to put my gloves on first and then wetsuit so the cuff creates more of a barrier to water. Keeping your hands dryer inside and not having cold water flushing through definitely helps warmth.

    • @DaveSails7
      @DaveSails7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@solentfoiler5969 That sounds like the way to go! Had a session in 45 deg yesterday with open mitts, and my hands got pretty cold. I realized, the thin handles on my F One Strikes don't block the open palms like a kite bar does. Might work better with wings with booms. Definitely would have been better with thin gloves underneath the mitts.

    • @veskupaananen
      @veskupaananen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaveSails7 Open palm mittend are great and you can use a cheap thin 1 mm PVC "chemical" glove (Tegera etc.) under it. I have been using this combo for years below 5C, but past few years I have used Prolimit closed palm direct grip mittens and they have been good enough and not tiring. Good thing with Tegera is their length and they extra seal your suit's arm openings.

I can’t tell if I’m gonna keep the 6m, cause I’m going 5.5 on the v2. I think I’ll prolly use the 8m a lot, I just can’t wait to take all the neoprene off and get a real sesh with normal wrists.
