    Tip: If you have figures that you want to you passengers, mount them with clear silicone. It is virtually invisible, it compensates for uneven surfaces, it isn't t affected by operational vibration, and the figures can be removed simply without damage to the paint. Adding figures is easy with these cars -- because of the ease of access, you can do as much work as you want and close it back up at the end of your session. Cheers!

    By far my favorite whistle on any steam locomotive ever. Good job, Lionel.

    I really love all the valve gear detail. Especially the lubricator valve which is something Lionel commonly ignores on their steam locomotives. Even though it's fixed in place which it shouldn't be, it's still overall an fantastic model.

    Great video Eric! I love those night time shots. You should have a little camera train that runs along side the trains to give a new perspective to the running shots. Maybe like a flatcar with a 1/4 tripod mount pushed by a switcher? Just a thought.

    Great review and great layout. I like the "railroad sounds" though I'm sure some find it annoying. I wonder if the sound of taking on water is at a tower or on the fly? People tell me it was quite a sight watching trains take on water from the troughs between the tracks. As a long time veteran of the aluminum cars, I agree the new cars look great. I am very familiar with some of the aluminum car issues, having worked for a "Lionel" and "Williams" dealer in the late 70's

    "Ach du lieber", senor Eric!!! Wow! Of ALL the model train reviews (by others too!) AND ALL the model trains, especially Lionels, this one is my great favorite of all time! The Loco/tender & the cars could have been designed by the great industrial designer Raymond Lowey!! Absolutely GORGEOUS (reminds me of ME!)!!! I am not into model trains (I'm 80 now!), but this set "flips my jib" to no end! Better than a date with a gorgeous young girl! Wowie wow wow!!!!! "Gesundheit"!

    Always liked O scale for tradition. Grandfather ran O, i run O, and hopefully my kids will run O. Don't get me wrong, HO is really nice looking and i had a few HO scale trains, they had to be sold when i moved sadly, but i would like to have an HO scale layout alongside my O scale eventually. I never played with trains for the prototypicalness, but i like to have things to scale. Besides that, if a loco is missing a valve or grabiron or the whistle is wrong i probably won't care.

    Another bit of information: Lionel tried making a Empire State Express locomotive back in the late 90's but they discovered that the body atop a C&O 490 chassis wouldn't look right. Also the route that the New York Central used from New York City to Buffalo is now the interstate I-90.

  • @allegheny48

    Thanks Eric for a well done and informative review. Lionel did a good job on the entire
    train. I wish my K-Line 21” extruded aluminum ESE cars had the full width diaphragms. I too have added additional passenger figures to my K-Line ESE cars but the disassembly
    and reassembly process is very time consuming. For the exception of 6 numbered coaches, the entire consists of both ESE trains were named after former NY State governors. There were also 6 additional coaches that had names instead of numbers. One of the comments for this video mentioned the spoked wheels in the engine’s trailing
    truck. All of the NYC Hudsons were built with a 2 cylinder steam booster engine that was geared to the rear axle of the trailing truck with those spoked wheels. They were essential in providing upwards of 12,000 lbs of extra tractive effort to assist in starting heavy
    trains. They generally cut out at 20 mph. Due to high maintenance costs they were
    often disconnected towards the end of the steam era.

    Gorgeous set Eric! Those passenger cars are beautiful! I have an earlier Lionel Extruded Aluminum B&O Columbian Observation Car, which I grabbed off EBay. When I got it, most of the passengers had come loose, and had to be re-glued. Needless to say, taking the car apart to re-glue the passengers was a pain in the butt. Looking forward to checking out your next video on these cars.

    Eric, I had 8 passenger cars which were aluminum and they were junk they used silicone to glue the passenger in what a joke, the lights also were glued, they come off rolled around in the car it was a mess. I called Lionel and complained that did a lot of good, well that's good they are not putting in the passengers, I would rather do it myself it's more fun !. the engine looks great and the passenger cars look really nice. I don't have the New York Central 4-6-4 in my collection, I ordered the Yellowstone 2-8-8-4 #225 so I have to pick it up first before I commit to another engine.

    I love the full-sized diaphrams on the passenger cars. (I think this is a NYC-only convention.) The sprung passenger trucks are really nice, too. Sadly, plastic car bodies kind of make my skin crawl when I touch them. Modern CNC technology should allow Lionel to produce accurate window and door arrangements and still keep costs down, so there is no need for cookie-cutter window and door arrangements across all railroads.

    Does Lionel actually sell these models directly off their website, or do you have to go through a Lionel dealer to get them?

    • @Ericstrains
      @Ericstrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They sell a limited number of items from their website, but for the most part the model train hobby works on the concept of pre-orders. Each year, Lionel puts out 2 catalogs. Once a catalog is released, you have a set amount of time (usually a couple months) to put in your pre-order with a Lionel dealer. Typically the dealer will require a 10% deposit for the pre-order and then the model usually arrives anywhere from 6-12 months later...give or take. Lionel makes it's decision on how many of a particular model to manufacture based on the number of pre-orders, so if you don't pre-order a model you might not be able to find one after the fact.

    • @Ericstrains
      @Ericstrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NinjagoGuy416 exactly. Typically the only way to find an older set is on eBay and places like that. Every now and then Lionel might have an older set from a few years ago that is still in stock, but it’s very rare. The best way to make sure you get the stuff you want is my pre-ordering when a new catalog is released.

    This may be unpopular, but traction tires are a real deal breaker for me. They just seem so tacky compared to a history of magnatraction that really was a game changer to begin with. Such an excellent solution and keeps metal on metal as it should be. These locos would just be so much more killer with magnatration. That’s my two sense. Similarly, I would buy these if they cut out the electric sounds and had air whistle tenders… I love Lionel and I’m loyal. I also hate being critical. I keep buying vintage PW trains.

    Hi Eric, I just bought this set the other day brand new, and I just completed my layout. I've noticed that your engine seems to be fine going over switches at slow speed. Whenever my engine goes over a switch it just dies, and this is with every steamer I own. I have Atlas 054-072 switches. What my dad and I did was run two different transformers with 2 buses for each track we have, but no matter what, at slow speed the engines struggle over the switches. Do you have any tips for Atlas switches? Thanks!

      Did you make sure that the center rails on the switches are not isolated from the rest of the grid, because it's a lack of power there. Make sure your wiring is right there and you're using metal rail joiners (if applicable)
